Meet Me by the Moonlight

When these two get together with their buddies in the Longview sextet, they deftly explore the bluegrass tradition of crisp picking and ensemble singing. On this 1999 record, however, they tone things down a notch to pay homage to brother duos like the Blue Sky Boys and the Monroe Brothers, acts that formed a vital bridge between old-time mountain music and its spruced-up bluegrass descendant. Connell's smooth lead vocals and Rigsby's passionate tenor harmonies blend effortlessly as the pair runs through a program filled with off-the-beaten-track tunes from the Monroes, Bolicks (Blue Sky Boys), and of course, the Stanley Brothers, who clearly remain Rigsby's main inspiration. You can hear the honesty and integrity that these two gifted singers bring to their music. --Marc Greilsamer

This is a wonderful collection of bluegrass music. Rigsby's version of Old Ship of Zion is soul stirring and makes you yearn for the music of the hills. Connell and Rigsby are truly a duet that will do much to further and sustain bluegrass.

5 out of 5 stars Songs from and for the heart .......2006-06-12

Annie Patterson has a rich, melodic voice which soothes and inspires. The tunes chosen for this album are largely traditional folk songs and ballads, sung beautifully to guitar and banjo. They are a delight to listen to and great to sing along with.
But I particularly want to write here about her lovely and haunting variation on the Gaelic song "Fear A Bhata", a traditional song that, in the original, echoes the heartache of waiting for a lover long at sea. Annie has kept the Gaelic refrain but added her own lyrics for the verse in a lullaby of protection and consolation. She lovingly dedicated it to my daughter, her niece.
I live in the DC area and in the fall of 2002 we were in the midst of the madness of unknown snipers shooting ordinary people at random in our area. We all looked over our shoulders when pumping gas and worried for our children in school. My daughter, then nearly 10, showed fortitude through the crisis, even having the presence of mind to call the police non-emergency line on her own to report a white work van (like the one thought to be used by the killers) which she'd spotted while walking home alone from school. But the fact that she was put in that position troubled me as a parent and I worried for her and all the children who were having to live in this repeated atmosphere of fear. (This was only about a year after the September 11 attacks which hit not only the Twin Towers but also, locally for us, the Pentagon.) I shared my worries, as I often do, with my sister. She is also a parent, and understands how much we ache and long to provide a safe haven for our children. Her lullaby "Safe from Harm" reaches into this ache and longing and beautifully brings out comfort and hope. Thank you, Annie, from the depths of my heart. I recommend this album to anyone.
