Legends of Western Swing

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
For anyone interested in discovering the powder-keg musical melange known as Western swing, this 18-song compilation serves as a wonderful primer. All of the genre's major figures are represented, and the package offers detailed notes about the gestation of Western swing and about all of the artists included. However, there is also much for longtime fans to savor here, thanks to a well-chosen program that includes many out-of-print classics and songs from lesser-known talents. In addition, it's interesting to note how many of the same vital yet unheralded musicians keep popping up across bands and years. What comes across clearly is a musical style that balances instrumental virtuosity, pop sensibility, and carefree hilarity like no other. The collection also shows the dramatic range of possibilities the genre offers: everything from pared-down quartets to sprawling orchestras, from pop ditties to gritty blues to modern-edged jazz, from tight arrangements to wheeling improvisation. --Marc Greilsamer

Though Bob Wills has long been heralded as a country-music icon (an inspiration for artists from Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson through Lyle Lovett and Asleep at the Wheel, and toasted by Waylon Jennings in "Bob Wills Is Still the King"), the Texas fiddler considered himself more of a jazz bandleader. The Texas Playboys' signature dance-floor style of Western swing encompassed blues, jazz, country, and pop standards, with a sophistication at odds with the era's image of "hillbilly music." This four-disc centennial anthology (a little late, as Wills was born in 1905 and died in 1975) documents the musical progression of the band and its music from regional phenomenon to national treasure. The 105 tracks (remastered, but all previously released) showcase the legendary "twin guitars" of Leon McAuliffe and Eldon Shamblin, the smooth crooning of Tommy Duncan, the irrepressible spirit of Wills himself, and a songbook of classics such as "New San Antonio Rose" (with lyrics added to the original instrumental), "Take Me Back to Tulsa," and "Faded Love." In jukeboxes and roadhouses throughout the Southwest, it is Bob Wills, not Benny Goodman, who remains the "King of Swing." --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Love Western Swing.......2007-06-08

My husband and I have been a Bob Wills fan for many years. He is 80 and a collector of Bob Wills music. He was truly the "King of Western Swing" and this is a wonderful collection of his music.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Western Swing.......2007-05-06

I own other Bob Wills recordings, but this is the most comprehensive. It's not really country music at all...It has its own kind of energy and incorporates various styles of music. It's inventive and ageless and it's just pure pleasure to hear.

4 out of 5 stars Legends of Country Music.......2007-04-11

Really a good set, with a lot of original recordings. If you like original Texas swing, this is a must box set for your collection

5 out of 5 stars What makes Bob holler?.......2006-10-03

I must own about 30 Bob Wills cd's and this has made many of them obsolete. If you are a Bob Wills fan there is no need for me to convince you of Will's and his band's virtuosity. For those of you who aren't familiar with Bob Wills and western swing music, I think you owe it a hearing. Wills mixed blues, jazz, big band, and western music and literally invented what we know as western swing. The list of great musicians who played with this band are impressive. Not many people realize that Rolling Stone magazine selected Eldon Shamblin as the greatest rhythm guitar player of all time.
The recording quality of this cd is so far above everything else I've heard that it must be stressed here.
What makes Bob Holler? If he were alive today this reproduction of his great music would!

5 out of 5 stars A moving tribute to a great musician !.......2006-09-22

Born to a poor family in Limestone County, Texas, Bob Wills (the undisputed "King of Western Swing") has become synonymous with that style of music. In 2006, this 4-disc release in Columbia "Legends of Country Music" series is a great way to celebrate his centennial! Wills had learned to play the fiddle by age ten. By the late 1920s, he and Herman Arnspiger were performing in the Fort Worth area as The Wills Fiddle Band. In 1931, they were joined by Milton & Durwood Brown and called themselves Aladdin's Laddies. Disc #1 in this set begins in 1932 with recordings of The Light Crust Doughboys, the band formed after the Light Crust Flour Co. hired the band for radio broadcasts. Because of a trademark, Victor Records called them The Fort Worth Doughboys. By 1934, Wills had formed his own band, moved to Tulsa, and signed with Okeh Records. Disc #2 covers 1937-1940, and disc #3 spans 1941-45. Disc #4 begins with 1946 and ends with Bob Wills' final session (1973 in Dallas).

It's important for such compilations to include a musician's big hits, as well as a sampling of their entire repertoire and influential pieces. We hear many favorites like "Big Ball in Cowtown," "Bubbles In My Beer," "Roly Poly," "Take Me Back to Tulsa" and "Stay A Little Longer." "San Antonio Rose" and "New San Antonio Rose" are both included, the former written in just 30 minutes when Wills needed another number at a recording session. Pandhandle Rag was a top ten hit in 1949. We're given the 1969 version here. Leon McAuliffe's influential "Steel Guitar Rag" appears on disc #1. In the 1960, Wills made the charts with "Shape Up or Ship Out" and "I Don't Love Nobody." Unfortunately, these songs are not provided. And how in the heck could they not have included "Across the Alley from the Alamo"? Oh well ... can't have everything.

With 105 tracks in total, this compilation certainly tells the musical story with both old-time fiddling (e.g. Osage Stomp) and country-styled jazz (e.g. Trouble in Mind, Basin Street Blues) well represented. But don't forget about the times that Bob Wills lived and played his music in, just after the Depression. Many of his fans were poor, the working folks in need of a charismatic performer to look up to. Somewhat of a folk hero, Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys traveled the backroads to rural areas in a large bus with a big longhorn steer head on the front. With heavy emphasis on the backbeat and guitar chords played over a moving bass line, the music was infectious an designed for dancing. And then there were the great lyrics, often sung by the great Tommy Duncan. Excellent notes, in a booklet with many excellent historic photographs, are an added bonus in this legends series. All I can say, is that it's a moving tribute to a great musician. So, to quote Bob Wills, "Aaaaa-haaaa!" (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

Album Description

The Lap Steel Guitar has been called ..."the most expressive and toneful instrument ever conceived". When you hear this album, you'll know why. Featuring a diverse range of musical styles such as Country, Hawaiian, Folk, Western Swing, Surf 'Noir'and New Age, performed by spectacular musicians from The United States, Canada, Hawaii and Australia. Some of the musicians are legendary, some have played with 'legends'. All are brilliant. Included are some 'classic' songs as well as some new compositions that are pure genius. There are two vocal tracks that show another dimension to the depth and versatility the instrument has to offer. This CD is guranteed to 'steel' your heart.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good but a bit misleading.......2004-01-07

First-I liked the album. The good things about it included the variety and breadth of musical styles - from Bob Brozman (poster child for all things National Guitar) to Kayton Roberts who does a nice version of Bells of St. Mary's. My only gripe is that much of the music deviates from what is known as the "lap steel guitar" (a relatively small electrified six to 10 string instrument), offering various slide guitar and resonator guitar songs as well. It would be as if they called a record "all about trombones" and only include one or two songs just with trombones and the rest with other instruments. I was not disappointed with the sound, but thought that they could have either called it something else or included more actual lap steel guitars on the record.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wide-ranging collection of country guitar styles.......2002-02-11

The guitar’s evolution from rhythm to lead was paralleled by the increasing renown of its country players. But even with the guitar’s lead role, Nashville’s system often subordinated the stardom of pickers to the vocalists (or band leaders) on whose records they performed. Guitar Player’s 1990 collection highlights seventeen stellar guitar performances, ranging from hotshot slingers like Joe Maphis whose instrumentals serve up his flying fingers front-and-center, to brilliant players like Grady Martin, whose Mexicali-flavored picking serves as a duet to Marty Robbins’ vocal on "El Paso."

The range of musical and guitar playing styles presented here is astonishing. Maphis and his disciple Larry Collins flat pick up a storm in "Hurricane." Jimmy Bryant & Speedy West duel with guitar and steel on "The Night Rider." Earl "Joaquin" Murphey provides swinging steel in Spade Cooley’s big-band. Merle Travis shows off his acoustic fingerpicking talents (as opposed to the honky-tonk he’s more commonly known for) on "Cannon Ball Stomp," and Chet Atkins (backed by Homer and Jethro) shows off his variation of Travis’ style on "Galloping on the Guitar." Leon McAuliffe (of Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys) and Leon Rhodes (of Ernest Tubb’s Texas Troubadours) shine on a pair of instrumentals.

Carl Perkins, remembered today mostly for his rockabilly sides demonstrates his exceptional country skills on "Tennessee," an early side waxed for Sun. Later samplings include the chiming 12-string of Roger McGuinn supporting the picking of Clarence White on the Byrds’ "Nashville West," and Reggie Young’s 1981 work on Merle Haggard’s loping "I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink."

Additional highlights include Bud Isaacs watershed pedal steel appearance on Webb Pierce’s "Slowly" and Doc Watson’s folk-country fingerpicked cover of John D. Loudermilk’s "Windy and Warm." The inclusion of longtime Sons of the Pioneers guitarist Roy Lanham’s bebop playing on "Lost Weekend," is a fine, though not particularly relevant to the theme of the collection - too bad a Pioneer’s side couldn’t be included. The disc’s lack of chronological sequencing is a bit puzzling. Audio quality is generally excellent (with a few pops and crackles on some of the earlier transcription work), and Rich Kienzle’s extensive liner notes are thorough and engaging.

A fun, unique sampler of the greats. A chronological progression from 1937 - '67, with classic instrumentation and surprises like Carl Smith on "Baby I'm Ready" and Chet Atkins on "Car Hoppin' Mama". Interesting liner notes, too.

    4 out of 5 stars If I had a jukebox..........2001-03-13

...this would be the first platter I'd put on it. While this is playing, you can close your eyes and almost feel the honky tonk hardwood floor vibrating with the music and the dancers. The "Honky Tonk Heroes" CD over on Columbia is real nice, but not as fine as this: You got your Hank Williams Sr., your early George Jones, your "Wild Side of Life" from Hank Thompson and your Lefty Frizzell. I guess the only thing missing would be a classic from Patsy Cline but I guess you can't have everything or else life, like this CD,would be five stars.

Can't hardly go wrong with those, but then you've also got your Leon Payne (the Blind Balladeer)and horny Al Dexter (going nuts for that gal with "her skirts up to her knee"). Did you know that the Al Dexter cut was done in the same sessions as Robert Johnson's recordings of "Cross Road Blues" and other blues classics?

Highly recommended, along with the aforementioned "Honky Tonk Heroes" CD.

There are a lot of country music anthologies, but this is as fine a 1-disc sampler as one could want. "El Paso," "Ring of Fire," and "Flowers on the Wall" (in succession!) are worth the price of the CD by themselves.

Throw in Patsy Montana, George Jones, the Stanley Brothers, Bob Wills, Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Roy Acuff, Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson, and a lot of others and you can't miss.

    5 out of 5 stars A Compilation-Lover's Must-Have.......2001-05-13

You have to appreciate the mind that put this CD together. It carries you from the Hoosier Hot Shots' hilarious and irreverent "From the Indies to the Andes in His Undies," to Patsy Montana's luminous yodeling on "I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart," and from the true sobriety of "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow" (this last alone should earn the compilation a following after the success of the Coen brothers' O Brother Where Art Thou?) to the dark humor of George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today." Throw in Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson's duet, "Pancho and Lefty," and get ready to be truly entertained.

If you've got any friends who say they don't like country music, let them borrow this and see if they change their minds.

Legends Of Guitar is no misnomer. This is a desperately fine compilation that must rank as one of the best for its genre. Roy Clark, Albert Lee, James Bryant, et al, and the always amazing Jerry Reed on "Claw" round out a spirited, fun and plucky rock and roll, country/blues set that will have you tappin' and a snappin' in no time. Chet Atkins' vocal duet with Les Paul on "Give My Love to Nell" lulls, though perhaps merely serves as the valley next to so many towering tunes. "Six Days on the Road" (D. Dudley) makes you wish this cd didn't end, or otherwise pine for a Peterbilt! These guys are serious professionals.

    A must-have for music afficionados.
