Hillbilly Idol

Editorial Reviews

Hillbilly Idol's follow-up to Town and Country proves an altogether tasty smorgasbord of rootsy country, honky-tonk, Western swing, and newgrass. Smart, without being smart-alecky--even on the novelty number "Hillbilly Polka," a song about a guy with a thing for a squeezebox girl--this Cleveland, Ohio, band thrills on such demanding instrumentals as "Four Brothers," and on steel player Al Moss's meaty, banjo-driven "Dixie Highway Home," destined to become a 'grassy classic. There's a surprise on almost every song, and versatility abounds, from the "spaghetti beach instrumental" of "Sirocco" to stylish covers of Tim O'Brien's "Late in the Day" and the Louvin Brothers' "She Didn't Even Know I Was Gone." Mix in some sophisticated humor and the fine duet vocals of founding members Dave Huddleston and Paul Kovac, and add some instrumental riffs that pay tribute to both country and rock influences, and you've got an album you'll be recommending to your friends and playing over and over again. Did they say Cleveland? Amazing. --Alanna Nash

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Great.......2007-05-10

I was a bit apprehensive about getting this. I was really worried about the sound quality and the approach to the songs. The only things that I had ever heard from Tommy Sands up to this point was "The Worryin' Kind." However, I did a little research about Mr. Sands, and I ordered this album, as well as the album entitled "The Worryin' Kind" from Bear Family. The songs are good, and have a great quality about them being from smaller markets and from being so dated. Tommy really had a decent country voice and you can tell that he just loved the genre. It's a shame he didn't stick to more county and rockabilly later in his career. Everyone had to make a buck I guess.

      3 out of 5 stars Cleveland honky-tonk and bluegrass.......2002-04-09

Recording in the shadow of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, this Cleveland quartet has created a fine album of honky-tonk music flavored with Swing, Zydeco, Tex-Mex and Bluegrass. Al Moss' pedal steel anchors a country sound whose nostalgic echoes will be familiar to fans of BR549, but without the stagey retro baggage. The group's harmonies call on the Everly and Louvin Brothers (the latter of whose "She Didn't Even Know I Was Gone" is covered here), and the band's original compositions mix easily with covers of jazz composer Jimmy Giuffre's "Four Brothers"(rearranged as a swingin' Speedy West/Jimmy Bryant-styled pick-fest) and Tim O'Brien's touching "Late in the Day."

The novel "Hillbilly Polka" cleverly mixes country swing and Cleveland's ethnic beat, with Jeff Pecon's piano accordion intertwining playfully with guitars and yodels to create a lively dance tune. The band moves easily from swing ("One Step Forward") to honky-tonk two-steps and banjo-led modern bluegrass such as "Dixie Highway Home," repleat with tight, multipart harmonies. Laurie Lewis adds her harmony to "Between Here and Heaven," and the band kicks up the tempo for a Buckaroos-styled instrumental, "Radio Flyer." The closing "Sirocco" weds western musical themes (by way of James Bond, perhaps) with the '60s instrumental twang of the Shadows and Ventures, and a modern twist of the Raybeats.

The Hillbilly Idols' very name spells the reverence they feel for their influences. They run through a wide variety of styles on this sophomore effort, with a mastery that frees them from slavish devotion. The resulting blend presents a sound that's the organic result of lifetimes spent listening to and playingmusic, rather than simply studying nostalgic sources.

4 out of 5 stars what, old-fashioned twang music from the Rust Belt?.......2001-11-16

You better believe it ... this group of Clevelanders have found the original soul of country and western music, and are breathing life into it their own way. The group are all musically talented, and these songs come off very tight and well-done. I'll only give them four stars though, because as good as this album is, it doesn't hold a candle to their live performances.

4 out of 5 stars I Loved this Group And Their Songs!.......2001-05-27

What I liked special about this group was that they are so "Down to Earth". Hillbilly Idol isn't like other country/folk groups. They are so natural. Believe me, I've met them. In fact, I took fiddle lessons from one of them.
