4 out of 5 stars Half wonderful, half disappointing.......2005-12-30

This CD includes the first Four Freshmen Capitol LP, the wonderful "Voices in Modern," which made a generation of us sit up and take notice in the 1950s. And it also includes one of the group's last Capitol efforts, "Funny How Time Slips Away," which shows why Capitol let the Four Freshmen slip away from its label. All 12 of the "Voices" songs by Bob Flanigan, Don and Ross Barbour and Ken Errair were memorable. Despite the presence of "Graduation Day" and "Charade" and the great voices of Flanigan, Ross Barbour and Ken Albers, "Funny" contains a number of very forgettable tunes. Fortunately, the current Four Freshmen group, which has none of the original members, is closer to the original sound and concept than the offerings on the second half of this CD. If you don't have "Voices in Modern" on CD, get this and skip through the "Funny" part. "Mood Indigo," "It Happened Once Before," "After You," "It's a Blue World" and the other songs are well worth the price. But if you do have the "Voices" songs in this format, you can pass up this product. You'd be better off buying a CD by the new Four Freshmen or, better yet, seeing them when they come to your part of the world.

At the height of his fame, the venerable country outlaw sought to share the spotlight with "old friends" on the downward slope of their own careers. This CD reissue pairs two such LPs: 1982's Old Friends with Roger Miller and 1985's Funny How Time Slips Away with Faron Young. Both albums are enjoyably good-natured, but hardly essential. On the former, Nelson and Miller revisit 10 Miller compositions but sing together on just 3. The title song (with a third legend, Ray Price, helping out) was a minor hit, but the album's gems are the spare closing tracks, "When Two Worlds Collide" and "I'll Pick Up My Heart (And Go Home)." Here, Willie's mournful vocal keeps company only with Johnny Gimble's fiddle and Jimmy Day's steel. Funny How Time Slips Away includes 12 duets between Nelson and Young, highlighted by "Hello Walls," a 1961 chart-topper for Young that was Nelson's big break as a Nashville songwriter. --Anders Smith-Lindall

      Album Description

A contemporary of Junior Parker and Bobby Bland in the southern states. Where the first presented the bluesier side, Bland and Hinton presented a sophisticated soulful side of R&B. They also shared the same big-band backing group for many recordings, who as well as providing a rich brass backing to ballads, could also 'jump' with the best of them. Joe Hinton was a gospel singer with a melodic tenor voice who was tempted to the bright lights and big pay days of R&B by Don Robey, owner of Duke/Peacock Records in Houston, Texas, who launched the Backbeat label as a vehicle for this fine soul talent. Cherry Red. 2006.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Willie Nelson is my hero.......2006-08-27

A long time ago, in a land far far away, an unknown songwriter rode into Nashville. He'd been listening to country music for many years because he loved it so much. This was back in the days when crying in your beer was more common than storytelling, although a combination was always best, and controversy was to be avoided. Our young songwriter was able to follow every convention, play by all the rules, be true to himself, and yet inject a level of intelligence that was rare. And since you read the title of this thing, you know I'm talking about the red-haired stranger himself, Willie Nelson.

I'll just pick a title at random. Are you old enough to remember Faron Young singing Hello Walls? I am. Willie wrote that. Can you remember anything else Faron Young sang? I can't. Sorry, Faron. I'm only 43.

This particular CD contains Willie Nelson singing over 20 of those songs that he wrote way back when.

Lemme throw one more song title at you because it's suddenly newsworthy again. Merle Haggard and George Jones teaming up for an album called Yesterday's Wine. Title track written by Willie Nelson. 25 years later, they're teaming up again. No idea what they'll sing, but it does make my little review somewhat timely.

This is a great CD, okay? It's real and it's Willie. Some of the tracks are still in my MP3 player. Some aren't. But as a unified whole CD, it's great. Awesome lyrics and soulful voice even when the words are corny. Willie rules.

Incidentally, One In A Row might be the most cold-blooded song I've ever heard, ranking right up there with Tainted Love by Marilyn Manson, except that Willie makes me laugh whereas Marilyn just needs to get another 20 or so years under his belt so he can chill. I mention this because I want to be the first reviewer to ever use "Willie Nelson" and "Marilyn Manson" in the same sentence. And that makes TWO in a row, haha!

            Product Description

With this twofer, we complete our tour of the Four Freshmens Capitol album catalog, and what a tour its been, covering 7 releases and 14 albums! Winding up with these two albums is kind of fitting, too, because they look backwards and forward at the same time for a group that has never stopped changing and evolving, as they come at the beginning and the end of their Capitol recording career. In fact, 'Voices in Modern' (1955) was their very first album for the label, and 'Funny How Time Slips Away' (1964an apt name, that) was their next-to-last; between them they boast 23 tracks of the kind of sophisticated harmony, sensitive arrangements and sense of fun that mark every Freshmen release. A very hard to find CD! Includes 'After You; Over the Rainbow; My Heart Stood Still; The Nearness of You; Holiday; Stormy Weather; Street of Dreams; Well Be Together; Circus; Mood Indigo; It Happened Once Before; Its a Blue World; Funny How Time Slips Away; Graduation Day; Do You Really Love Me; Tears in Our Eyes; Hold Me; Weve Got a World That Swings; Dont Make Me Sorry; My Babys Gone; Charade; Looking over My Shoulder', and 'Wake the Town and Tell the People'. Release date: 7/19/05.
