Corb Lund and his crackerjack band, the Hurtin' Albertans, lassoed a pen full of awards in the recent Canadian Country Music Awards (and the Western Canadian Music Awards), and for anyone just coming to Lund's brand of ranchin' and ropin' tunes, this album (ironically recorded in Nashville) serves as a fine introduction. The baby-faced Canuck blends a prairie upbringing with 10 years as an indie rocker in his last group, the Smalls, and throws in a smattering of acoustic blues, folk, rockabilly, ragtime, and country-rock to balance his traditional cowpoke leanings. While his subject matter generally hangs around the chutes and the plains, or follows the white line down the highway, Lund is so lyrically and rhythmically inventive that special guests Ian Tyson, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Riders in the Sky's Ranger Doug and Too Slim probably begged to ride herd. Put your boots up, pull out a can of chew, and get acquainted with the brightest new star under the western moon. --Alanna Nash

A Breath of Fresh Air.......2007-05-21
I first got hooked on Corb Lund after purchasing his last release ( Five Dollar Bill) and have been anticipating more.
Well, "Hair in my Eyes Like a Highland Steer", does not dissapoint to say the least.
Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans mix the introspective ( The Truth Comes Out, The Rodeo's Over) with the witty ( The Truck Got Stuck, Hurtin' Albertan) to produce a great album full of hooks you will be humming all day.
As a Texan and a rancher, I find it reassuring our "neighbors to the North" share many of our experiences and outlooks. "The Truck Got Stuck" in particular caught my ear, as I have had similar experiences in muddy pastures ( minus the canola seed.)
While these are mainly "cowboy" songs, I think anyone with a love of the West and rural life will find them enjoyable.
Excellent Tunes.......2007-01-15
If you are all about real country music then, you would love this CD!!!
I was very impressed that it was here before the scheduled date of arrival.
Thank you so much
BUY IT ALL YOU COUNTRY PEOPLE!!!!

Perfect.......2006-07-09
I heard Corb Lund described as Canada's answer to Cake, but that's not really true. The Corb Lund band is as rooted in Alberta as Cake is in California, and both have smart lyrics, but (even though I don't much like country music) I have to give the nod to this album. Great musical hooks, wonderful lyrics, songs that get stuck in your head and make you smile for days afterward.
I think I'd compare Corb Lund more to Steve Earle, with a catchier bass/banjo line. BRILLIANT album.
Pure Alberta Country ! .......2005-10-18
I was in Canada this weekend and heard the 'The Truck Got Stuck" and I was hooked. I bought the CD and laughed and smiled from the beginning until the end. Buy this CD and ENJOY!

Time to switch to Corb Lund.......2006-02-23
What's extraordinary with country music, is that owing to its large diversity, it allows us to discover bands like the Corb Lund Band. This Canadian band around Corb Lund is really surprising, their compositions are varied and original, telling a world they know well : the ranchers. Sheer bliss! That's the country music we like, sometimes influenced by whiskey with the splendid "Time To Switch To Whiskey" or the Canadan prairies with "Short Native Grass". 13 songs likely to give you a nice change of surroundings and really cheer you up for good. It's a piece of his soul that Corb Lund offers in this album, well, four generations of rodeo riders have left their marks. The Honky-Tonk influence is undisputable, but it is hard to classify this album where bluegrass stands next to more modern country tunes. That will keep a lot of people satisfied. This album is to listen to with one's ears as much as with one's heart. A real treat!

Five Dollar Bill.......2005-11-14
One of a very few original, contemporary cowboy songwriters, Corb Lund's "Five Dollar Bill" is well-worth twenty bucks Canadian to anyone who can appreciate hands-on humor and imaginative musical scores. His lyrics are not laments about how things used to be, nor twenty-gallon rhymes for the Nashville scene, but upbeat and clever perspectives from the wide-open and semi-tamed spaces of Alberta that work just as well south of the Canadian border. Halter in hand, his ode to a hard-to-catch mare, "She Won't Come To Me," is a jewel while "Roughest Neck Around" walks the politically incorrect edge of the oilfields with due respect. Corb has an unusual way of incorporating introspection and humor that celebrates life, and he can put together fun songs like "Time To Switch To Whiskey","(Gonna) Shine Up My Boots" and "Buckin' Horse Rider" that never get boring. I've packed this CD in the pickup for ten months straight and continue to marvel at its originality that seems to fit any ranch landscape.
One of Canada's Finest.......2003-08-01
Corb Lund brings us country with a unique flavour. If you ever get the chance to see him live, you'd understand exactly what he can give to the audience. This stripped down album captures Corb's sound perfectly. Nothing interferes with his voice and guitar, the production of the album allows Corb's true musicality to shine through. "Five Dollar Bill" is a fun album; a great album to drive, drink, party, relax, (hopefully not at the same time). Corb captues Alberta and the prairies like no other artist can. You know he's well aqainted to the big sky of the prairies, the open roads, and the partying spirit we all cherish. This album is probably one of the best country albums I have had the pleasure to listen to. I highly recommend this addictive album to anybody, especially if you're not a country fan. You just might find yourself hooked to Corb's wonderfully catchy voice, and his simple, strong songs.

About the Artists
Nate Borofsky, Doris Muramatsu, and Ty Greenstein of the modern folk trio Girlyman scheduled the group's first rehearsal for September 11, 2001. Doris and Ty, who met in the second grade, had recently abandoned their former project as a duo; their friend Nate had just moved to New York after four solo years on the Boston music scene. When all three suddenly found themselves living in the same Brooklyn apartment, it seemed only natural to combine their talents into a new group. According to Nate, the rehearsal was quickly forgotten, but the events of September 11 helped shape the trio's vision: "It brought us in touch with our own mortality. We realized that we wanted to have fun, to do what felt right to us, and to not take ourselves too seriously. We started out by calling ourselves Girlyman."
Maybe it's this mix of earnestness and humor that has audiences nationwide falling in love with Girlyman, or maybe it's just that their soaring three-part harmonies are unlike anything you've ever heard. Maybe it's their folk-pop-bluegrass soundsomething like Nickel Creek meets the B-52's, where the members switch off songwriting duties, lead vocals, and a range of instrumentsor maybe it's the catchy, often haunting melodies. Either way, Girlyman is on a roll. After the group won an Independent Music Award for their debut CD Remember Who I Am, Amy Ray (one of the contest's judges) decided to sign them to her indie label Daemon Records. When the Indigo Girls invited Girlyman to join them on the road, the as-yet unknown opening act received standing ovations and sold so many CDs that the label had to make an emergency shipment...and when those sold out, another.
Since then, the buzz about Girlyman has grown to a low roar. Since signing with Daemon, Girlyman has appeared on internationally syndicated radio shows like Mountain Stage and has received dazzling reviews in dozens of national and regional publications. The trio's robust 2004 festival season included appearances at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Boston Folk Festival, and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, where Girlyman was voted "Most Wanted to Return."
"The word about Girlyman is spreading like wildfire," says Ray, "and the kicker is that they've just begun."
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional songwriting, vocal, arranging talent in a small group........2007-07-09
This Little Star CD is one of the most enjoyable discoveries I've made lately. The songs are from the heart and head. The arrangements of instrumentation are very tasty. Nice use of mandolin and guitar - maybe the most subtle vocal backing instrumentation I've heard in a long time. All of that exists to give space for very tight vocal harmonies that work well in every song. All cuts are a pleasure, but in my estimation the particularly notables are: "I Wonder Where You've Gone", "Genevieve", "I Know Where You Are", and "This Is Me". Girlyman are vocalists first and foremost and I'm thankful for that.
Fabulous group, superb CD.......2007-04-02
Just got back from Northampton, MA concert. Sat through 2 sets. College crowd, banter appropriate to crowd, talented trio of musicians (all multi-instrumental), compelling music, great harmony...no, GREAT harmony. They position themselves as folk artists, and while this isn't folk the way this sixtysomething remembers it, I see their intent and they succeed at redefining the genre. Little Star loaded with quixotic themes, solid selections from 1 to 12. Just make sure you get to #12 -- it's a gem!
5 stars plus.......2006-09-06
Such a wide range of music types on one cd, everyone will like something. Most people will like them all. Indigo Girls are still my favorite, but Girlymans harmonies are "3" times better.
Im doing my part to spread the GIRLY word!!!!
Great music as always........2006-04-22
I saw Girlyman in concert with Dar Williams and let me tell you they stole the show...even though they weren't the mainliner band. I absolutely love this CD! It always give me chills to hear how well their voices harmonize. I'd definately love to see them again. You can't go wrong with this cd.

mediocre.......2004-10-04
Being a lover of both country music and Dean Martin, this album was a natural choice. Dean Martin doing county music sounds like a great marriage. To add fuel to this theory, I remember seeing him do an amazing song in a Western movie which may have been Rio Bravo. Eventually, however, I quickly found out why the two albums on this disc were out-of-print. The song choices are good and Dean's voice is as velvety as ever. The problem lies in the production and treatment. All songs are filled with the thick backdrop of a cheesy 1960's symphony orchestra. I'm not sure if it hasn't aged well or always sounded corny. I think that had Dean stripped the arrangements down (or recorded it ten years earlier or later), it might have become a classic. Instead, this disc is the reissue of two albums that probably should have stayed out-of-print. If you go into this album as a die hard Dino fan, you'll probably like it more than if you jump into it as a county and western enthusiast. Get this if you're as curious as I was to actually hear Dino sing county, but avoid it if you can.
COUNTRY DINO.......2003-03-01
I must confess that i am not a so called country music fanatic. However, those two back to back 1963 lps reunited are just what i needed to start my exploration.Perhaps it is the laidback DINO attitude that contributed to my enjoyment, but the singer was a natural for the genre and the classics like I'M SO LONESOME I SHOULD CRY,I WALK THE LINE and HEY GOOD LOOKIN are given first class treatment. My feeling was: let's try a country cd for a change, and unexpectedly i was pleased with the results.Maybe you are like me and thought you wouldn't buy a country cd of your life.Well, this could also do the trick for you like it did with me.With the recent réédition of the whole REPRISE catalogue,DEAN MARTIN is bound to gain many new fans.Let's hope so!
COUNTRY COOL.......2003-02-20
Country music never sounded so good. Dino adds his touch to these great country standards. I always loved these songs but not being a real big country music fan I now get to appreciate them even more .

Diamond in the rough.......2000-09-06
This is one groovy, eclectic, folkie album, that will surprise. Call it alternative country or whatever you like. Second of two laid back country cds that represent what you might imagine true country to be, from an artist who also runs base for an excellent rocky/puckish/heady band called The Smalls. Mixes well with red wine, green ciqarettes and an album by the Super Suckers called "Must've been high"... Don't let that last reference discourage, these are perfect tunes for everyone...
Cheers from Victoria, B.C.

i like this one a lot.......2006-03-02
my older brother listens to this because he got dumped by his girlfriend. it sounds ok, i think. he got over her he says because of this band and then he got a tattoo on his arm that says lucero so i think this is a good band. i just hope that they don't break up because then my brothers tattoo will be stupid. so are girls he says.
freakin bonres all over the damn place.......2005-07-05
This cd is amazing and it comes with a boner disk and its just a different version of the other cd. Lucero should be huge. They remind me of Nirvana but waaaay better. BONERS.
just when you think there's nothing new out there..........2005-05-15
...comes this record. a slight departure from their previous releases, this one still has the trademark lucero stamp through and through. although this album draws a line between lucero's past and future, stylistically, i doubt many of their old fans will be disappointed. the 3 records prior to this one were more "country" (for lack of a better term), and this one, as Rolling Stone pointed out, is more "Replacements". which is to say that the guitars are a little fuzzier, and just a little more "rock". yet this record doesn't sound quite like anything else out there. references to Uncle Tupelo have been made, but i feel those references apply more to the previous lucero recordings than this one.
lucero clearly has held onto their roots here, with the country twang seeping through, and the lyrics certainly fit the bill, being concerned mainly with heartbreak, drinking and fighting. the leanings toward rock have created a new chapter for this band. i think soon people will talk about "old lucero" and "new lucero", as the forthcoming record, "nobody's darlings" is an even further step away from the "country" tag. it could be said that this is the record that would the best "icebreaker" to introduce them to someone unfamiliar, leading that person to have to seek out the earlier work.
but you can't fault the band for experimentation, especially when it works so well for them. the increase in energy (such as in "hate and jealousy", tonight ain't gonna be good" and "tears don't matter much" seems to come so naturally to them, and resonates with the listener so well, that at the end of the record, any arguments of "selling out" that might've been there have simply been blown away. this record, like all of lucero's recordings, has an honesty that you just can't help but feel, and therefore can't argue with.
Older music, Newer fan.......2004-09-09
It just goes to show that there is always room to expand your mind and tastes. I recently had a dear friend turn me on to Lucero, and I cannot believe that I hadn't heard of them earlier. Their entire sound, the lyrics, the composition...it reaches me. I've attached events in my life to a lot of their songs already...lol. Basically, "Tennessee" and "That much Further West" have become the soundtrack for my life for the summer of 2004. Going to see them on September 21 at Oberlin college, and looking forward to the show. Looking forward to more music from them in the future.
Great CD, lousy production values.......2004-03-11
Great CD in the Ryan Adams, Replacements, Westerberg, Son Volt, Whiskeytown all American rock tradition. Only complaint is the production is muddled, but the material does make up for it

Album Description
"Ben Nichols delivers raw heartache as his once rootsy band amps up the guitars. It's the country album The Replacements never made"--Rolling Stone. Customer Reviews:
A MUST BUY FOR ANY ROCK FAN.......2006-09-26
Awesome, awesome, awesome. When I play this cd I usually spin it twice. The first line of the second song is worth the price alone, at least to me. This band is my second favorite alt/country band. Gin Blossoms being the first. Tears Don't Matter Much, Mine Tonight, Ain't Gonna Be Good, and That Much Further West are the standout tracks, but the whole album flows well.
The capabilities of small town wonder.......2006-02-02
When I initially heard this album, ironically I was getting a tattoo. I was blown away by the melody and straightforward approach. It is often attempted, but rarely executed properly. Lucero is capable of bringing to you, the southern midwest, as if it were penned on a typewriter and carried to you on a steam locomotive: With all of the grace and brevity of a fading violet, behind the opus of inspiration. I lived near Tennessee for almost five years (during my mid-teens), ten years ago, and this brings to light all of the ways I wanted to interpet it, but was unable to do so, without succinct focus. This thing is good all of the way through. However, I have read reviews attempting to describe these guys. One even said that Nichols conjures Shawn McGowan, of Pogues fame. However, I think Nichols' delivery is closer to that of Mr. Bachman, of Archers of Loaf fame (complete with ambiguous keys/chords and vocal snarl/shrapnel). And, at times, some of the guitar parts are very close to Jets to Brazil's later stuff. But, anyway you put it, even though they seem to sound like so many other bands, one cannot seemingly say that they really have heard anything like it before. In example, in "That Much Further West", Nichols states that, "These guys could do this without my help/the songs they write themselves " (or somehting of the like). This is the modest dignity we have come to expect, or anticipate from a guy who wants to be a star, but can't even get the courage to chase the girl that got away. Or, in "The Only One", he sets the tempo for the rest of the album: Grace through fire, where all of the the tears turn to long nights with a beer in hand, but exacts a price in return. In conclusion, this is a very good album, with staying power to boot. A great black and white, still-frame photo of goods, even though the hard ones are past, or right around the corner. Nichols could mumble, and you would get the same feeling. The best band I have never heard of, and the best music I have heard in a long time.
What a Great Album.......2004-08-28
I see that the magazine reviews compared this to the Replacements and Pete Yorn. That's some pretty good songwriting company.
To me, though, the better comparison is to Son Volt's first. Alt-country with no weak songs on the album.
One of the better albums I've bought in a long time.

Customer Reviews:
Some of Chet's very best "patented" fingerstyle guitar.......2002-07-23
There will never be another Chet Atkins. No one has ever earned the respect of guitar players from every field from all over the world the way Chet has. "Stringing Along With Chet Atkins" was the first Chet album I bought as a young boy. Chet put his personal touch on every tune starting with "O' By Jingo." The almost inhuman dexterity of Chet's right hand along with his unique ability to move down the neck of the guitar from one chord position to another, using open strings to tie it all together as only he could do it, will keep the most critical spellbound. From there it only got better with the 3/4 and 4/4 mixture on "Alice Blue Gown," and the silky smooth, very tastefully done "Hello Ma Baby," to the lightning fingered duel with Jethro Burns on the mandolin in "Gallopin' Guitar," and also "Main Street Breakdown." Chet along with Homer and Jethro was an unbeatable combination. The musical comedy team of Homer and Jethro were surprisingly good musicians in their own right. Of course Jethro was Chet's brother-in-law. All of the rest of this two-disc combination set is fingerstyle guitar at its best. It just doesn't get any better than this. If you ask real Chet afficianados which is their favorite Chet album, most will say either "Finger Style Guitar" or "Stringing Along With Chet Atkins." This is an unbeatable deal to be able to get these two classics in one set. Long live the legacy of this remarkable gentleman from east Tennessee known the world over as "Mr. Guitar."

Two mid-60s RCA Camden LPs on one disc........2004-09-11
I'd easily give this disc five stars because I think that the ten songs that comprise "The Magic Touch Of Floyd Cramer" are really good and the sound quality on these particular tracks ranges from good to excellent. But I have to deduct from the rating for other reasons. For one thing, I have to question Collectables decision to choose these two particular albums for this "two-fer". Both are really short mid-60s releases on the budget Camden label. Both are hodge-podge gatherings of tracks recorded several years prior to the albums' releases. Not to say that the music isn't good. A lot of Floyd's finest performances are included here, but why not pick two of his more cohesive RCA efforts like the two organ albums or two from the "Class Of..." series or an excellent title like "Country Piano, City Strings"? Maybe Camden is all BMG would license to them at this time. The inside of the cover lists 22 other recent Collectables releases and, looking over the titles, I believe most (if not all) of them are Camden albums.
Getting back to the sound quality, it should be noted that all of the tracks on this disc are in mono. This is understandable I suppose, because the original LPs were in mono. They were later reissued in stereo but for many of the songs, this meant fake "rechanneled stereo" since they were mono recordings. The few actual stereo recordings from the bunch could have been included here in stereo ("Shrum" is in true stereo on "The Essential Floyd Cramer") but they're mono. I don't really mind, and actually like having "Shrum" in both stereo and mono versions.
At any rate, the sound quality really takes a dive once the second album begins. There are so many drop-outs on "Tuxedo Junction" that the first half of the song is virtually unlistenable. After that song, the sound levels off and most of the rest of the disc sounds pretty good despite a little cloudiness to "Tomorrow's Gone" and "Naomi" and excessive treble on "Cryin'". The BMG Pair CD, "Country Classics" from 1988 also contained "Tuxedo Junction" and although the sound quality on that disc wasn't all that great, I don't remember all those drop-outs. I'm gonna make my own CD of these albums and replace this version with the one from the Pair CD.
Musically, this disc is all over the map. Aside from "Junction", Cramer knocks off covers of several other big band standards: "Sophisticated Swing", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", and his hit single version of "Chattanooga Choo Choo". "Sophisticated Swing" sounds much better here than it did on the aforementioned "Country Classics" CD. The sound quality is at it's highest on the Pete Drake tune "For Those That Cry". I'm glad because this track was one of the main reasons I wanted "Magic Touch" on CD. "Tomorrow's Gone", "Shrum", "Losers Weepers", "All Night Long" and "Kisses And Tears" are all Cramer originals. The track "Hot Pepper" is a remake of Cramer's 1958 hit "Flip, Flop And Bop". Two tracks, "Story Of Three Loves" and "Goin' Home" are retitled classical pieces by Rachmaninoff and Dvorak respectively.
So you can look at this disc two ways. It's either a pairing of two Camden budget LPs, or just a collection of 20 Floyd Cramer favorites. The poor sound quality on "Tuxedo Junction" aside, any fan of Floyd's will find a lot to like here.

Hank & Bob would roll in their graves Dancin!!!!.......2006-01-17
Some of the best Honky-Tonk and Western Swing EVER put down in any era. Jeremy Wakefied's steel playing is superb and the band just has a great boogie beat. Keep it up guys, were all depending on ya!
Amazing - if you love western swing you'll love this band.......2005-06-01
This is one of my favorite CDs; it's on heavy rotation in my car. The first time I heard it I would have sworn up and down that it was a late 40's band or somebody like Ernest Tubb working with different musicians. But the Lucky Stars put their own brand of backbeat magic into everything they do; the songwriting, the amazing solos, and Sage's fantastic vocals make this a stellar recording. And if they don't list their new album for sale soon I may die (hint hint). Nice work fellas, please keep it coming and tour frequently!
A highly pleasurable cd of authentic sounding 50's western.......2004-05-29
A highly pleasurable cd of authentic sounding 50's western swing. Although there are touches of rockabilly, the majority of this appelaing cd is made up of vintage sounding late 40's thru 50's Holywood western swing. Great musiscians, in the Big Sandy tradition, and fine tight solos, by this great band. If you like Big Sandy or Ray Condo's western swing combos, you are likely to liek this too, although it's more twangy than Big Sandy or Ray Condo. A fun and very swinging cd.
Wow........2004-02-29
I honestly did not think it was possible to make music this good.
5 Stars for the Lucky Stars.......2003-04-12
I was recently lucky enough to catch one of their live performances. They dazzled everyone with their fantastic singing/musicianship/stage presence/and lyrics. I just had to pick up this CD and I must say that they are now one of my favorite acts/bands. If you're a fan of western swing, pick this CD up, you won't be sorry.....
