If John Mayer has ants in his pants--and, given his many projects and the amount of music he releases in any given year, it appears that he does--his fans aren't complaining. Nor should they be. The Village Sessions, a six-song EP that retools favorites from Mayer's highly regarded Continuum disc, is mostly a way to feel further connected to him; the hurt comes through on "In Repair" both vocally and via expressive acoustic guitar work, making the Continuum version sound clipped by comparison, and the kicked-back version of "Good Love Is on the Way" (the one song here not from Continuum, but from Try!, a 2005 live disc) dispenses with angst in favor of a more liquid groove. Overall, it's a study in intimacy and focus--for Mayer, there seems to be a certain magic within the four walls of L.A.'s Village Recorder, where he laid down these tracks. Then again, maybe not: Prolific as he is, Mayer is no wand-waver. His reputation for musical pureness proceeds him, and The Village Sessions is one more testament to it. --Tammy La GorceProduct Description

Still as good as when they were young.......2007-07-07
I found myself remembering the words to most of the songs, that I thought I had forgotten. You don't forget, the words are just tucked away. They had a couple of new band members but the rest were the good ol' guys we remember. If you don't get to see them, this CD will be the next best thing. You will really enjoy listening to the songs on this CD.
After buying this, go check out "ToTo". They were the opening Band for Three Dog Night!!!

Whittling down the back catalog of one of the most popular and respected bands of the last quarter-century to a single-disc collection is bound to inspire argument and dissent from the fans and faithful over what is included--and all that gets left behind--and U2's 26-year career is as celebrated and beloved as any band of their generation. U218 Singles doesn't try to please everyone, wisely sticking to the acknowledged high points (and there are many) between 1983's War and 2004's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Nitpickers may quibble that the collection leans too heavily on the band's most popular albums and skips the (admirable if less anthemic) techno-pop tangents of Zooropa and Pop and the earnest energy of the Boy/October years, but the musical majesty accumulated here testifies to the undeniable power and emotion U2 can muster in a four-minute pop song. Two new Rick Rubin-produced tracks don't break new ground for the band, but both would fit snugly somewhere in the U2 canon--"Window in the Skies" is pure late-period arena rock with a typically towering falsetto chorus, while Green Day helps inject some October-era urgency into "The Saints Are Coming". The sum of these 18 tracks is a first-rate primer, perfect for that 10-year-old niece or nephew who thinks U2's big break was that iPod commercial. --Ben HeegeAlbum Description
U218 Singles is the first single-disc collection - including 16 of their best-known songs. Also included are two brand-new tracks recorded with producer Rick Rubin at Abbey Road Studios in London: "The Saints Are Coming" (with Green Day) and "Window in the Skies."Customer Reviews:
Great one disk compilation.......2007-07-16
What makes a good compilation in my opinion is a collection where every song is enjoyable and you don't have to hit the skip button. This is one of those collections and it is one I bring along on every road trip.
This contains all the hits from the definitive album "Joshua Tree" and focuses heavy on the more popular albums. People like me who stopped listening after the 1990 album and started back up again in 2000 will be glad to see that there are no songs on this collection inbetween those years.
The big fans of U2 will stay away from this collection and hopefully for them this will help finance a project to get all the albums remastered because they are LONG overdue.
I think it's a great compilation.......2007-07-09
Very nice job. Quite complete.
A pretty decent compilation for casual fans.......2007-06-30
DON'T HATE U2.......2007-06-19
I always seem to do it. I'll be sitting somewhere and this band comes on the radio, and I say "Man, I hate U2!" and everytime, without fail someone is offended. If it's one person, they'll think I said Hate-you-too...and they'll say "I never said I hated you!" If it's two people they'll think I said Hate-you-two.. and you can guess what happens next. If it's more than that then they realize I'm talking about the band, and they say.. "Wally. They're not THAT bad."
So I stopped saying that I hate U2. Even though, I sort of do.
This has nothing to do with my review for this album, nor the fact that I gave it a cruddy rating. So stop being so pompous U2 fans. Even if I didn't hate U2, this album would still be a waste of my time and money.
Three songs that I do like, and not one of them appear here.. NUMB, STARING AT THE SUN, and one of the ones from the early eighties that wasn't so obnoxious... where are they? Forgotten in favor of VERTIGO? Do you really like that song?
And don't get me wrong, but isn't BEAUTIFUL DAY the WORST of them all? I know it gets played 1000 times more a day on every radio station than all the other U2 songs that get played a 1000 times a day, but that doesn't make it worthy. Turn on your radio right now, spin the dial twice and I'll bet you the song will be on. Free. Why bother?
The rest is pretty much JOSHUA TREE, WAR and a unearthed rarity from here and there. MYSTERIOUS WAYS is ok, but the rest is filler in order to span the whole career, where it probably should have been just 80's tracks... NUMB, SUN, maybe one or two more from ACHTUNG BABY and nothing later than 1998, because its all been garbage after that.
IMHO.
U2 Marketing Blunder.......2007-06-19
I don't know if the marketing team for this group could actually be so ignorant or if they just couldn't bother rewarding their long-time die-hard fans with a TRULY Best of Hits Collection! So, now on to the crux of my plight... In lieu of tracks 8, 15, 16, 17 & 18, they should have at the very least included "I Will Follow" & "Angel Of Harlem"! Others, such as "Even Better Than The Real Thing" & "Zooropa" would have been bonuses!
In FACT, the particular song line up on this CD has cost it countless sales, for the simple absence of some of its timeless gems being replaced with some NO name of songs!

Umbrella remix CD by Rihanna.......2007-07-14
Repeated lyrics four times in a row keeps from perfection!.......2007-07-09
"S.O.S." has better lyrics, but the music sounds the same as "Hey Mr. DJ..."
"Unfaithful" annoys the hell out of me.
This brings us to "Umbrella." I have heard several people say this song grows on you--I agree. Our major complaints are that there is no need to repeat "...under my umbrella--ella, ella, ella--ay, ay, ay..." four times in a row, and it is pronounced "um-brel-la," not "um-ba-rel-la."
Otherwise, the song is great. I especially like the remix with Chris Brown's "Cinderella."
I am giving this song extra credit because it has been a positive influence on me--I even developed new lyrics for the song...while I did not write them down, the repeated lines aspect got stuck in my head...UGH!
Note: I do not know if it is intentional or accidental, but one line (if you have a good ear) sounds more suggestive than necessary.
ANOTHER HIT!!! Keep it UP!!!.......2007-06-11
Jay-Z did not take over the track like he alwayz tries to do... then rihanna comes with the hotness.. her voice may not b the strongest voice in music but she does kno how to use it and does songs that suit her...
the chorus is timeless "U can stand under my umbrella ella ella ey ey ey"... its the way she is singing it that makes it stick in your head.
the 'umbrella' video is so breathe takin... the silver body paint sold me....
'pon de replay", "SOS', 'unfaitful', now "umbrella".... keep the hits comin... ill b listenin

Perfect for New Fans, but . . ........2007-04-12
This album is really perfect for people who are just being introduced to Sarah Brightman. However, it really isn't for fans who have been with Sarah since the 1990s. All of the pieces are on her previous CDs, and, if you're a loyal fan, you probably already have them. Also, some really good hits are left out. "Harem" should have been put in place, instead of "What You Never Know". It seems as though Ms. Brightman hasn't put her "best" on this album". There also isn't a lot of Sarah from her "early years", such as her albums DIVE and FLY. There's a little bit of Phantom of the Opera, and then there are a lot of pieces from the album Time to Say Goodbye and Eden. A few from La Luna and a few from Harem. I am a LOYAL Sarah Brightman fan, but Sarah didn't out-do herself on this album. It almost seemed as though she was trying to make this a very CLASSICAL collection. I mean, she had some great pop tunes earlier on in her career. It's still a great collection, but I just wish that there was a little bit more! It's perfect for any new fan just coming in to the world of Sarah Brightman!

From Amazon.co.uk
With a voice like Stevie Wonder, a production sound that recalls the string-laden, slinky-bass disco of Studio 54, and a penchant for funky dance moves and outlandish hats, Jamiroquai's Jay Kay has successfully managed to straddle the underground and mainstream for the best part of 15 years. High Times brings together 19 of his band's hits to date, ranging from early 90s acid jazz classics "When You Gonna Learn," "Too Young To Die," and "Blow Your Mind," to later successes such as "Canned Heat," "Cosmic Girl," "Virtual Insanity," and on to recent songs from 2005 album Dynamite, such as "Feels Just Like It Should" and "7 Days In Sunny June." There are also two new tracks--the current single "Runaway" and the edgier "Radio," both of which continue the Jamiroquai tradition of mildly euphoric dancefloor disco-soul. Despite sticking to a formula of sorts over the years, the songs on this collection compliment each other well and form an impressive overview of one of the UK's most distinctive bands. --Danny McKennaAlbum Description

Even better than expected!~~WOW!.......2007-06-22
I am so glad I bought this CD with JAMIROQUAI's best hits (and plus some "extra" bonus songs are included).
If you like the sound of a sort of combo "jazz-rock" Cd then this is the one for you. JAMIROQUAI is a great band. It`s hard to truly define their sound, but whatever it is ,... it's GREAT!
As I said before, this band is a combo jazz-rock with a bit of alternative thrown in. The lead singer is AMAZING! The other band players are absolutely amazing too.
If you get this Cd, you wont be able to stop your feet from twitching to their beat. FUN!!!!!!
PS: if you have seen NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE then you will recognize track # 11!!---LOVE IT, and so will you!

From Amazon.co.uk
Though they've suffered death, departure and fraught internal and external relationships, No Doubt have kept faith with fun throughout, as The Singles very clearly proves. As their troubles have made them far from prolific, it's culled almost entirely from three albums--Return of Saturn, Rock Steady and their mega-hit Tragic Kingdom--with just the quirky, warped ska of "Trapped in a Box" to represent their eponymously titled major label debut. As said, it's excellent fun, from the opening power anthem "Just a Girl", through the ultra-modern, Madonna-like "Hey Baby" and the urgent, melodious power pop of "Excuse Me Mr" to the Chicago-style break-up ballad "Don't Speak". It's easy to see how this colourful band of Anaheim skanksters came to be seen as an energising antidote to the crushing male miserabilism of grunge. There are a few extras; a reverent cover of Talk Talk's "It's My Life", a dance-metal "Hey Baby" remix and a live repeat of the cute, Leonard Cohen-quoting "Underneath It All", featuring Gwen Stefani's vocal and a simple acoustic guitar. But, naturally, it's the hits that count and they're all here, every bouncing, beaming one of them. It's a fine testament to one of America's most enduring pop acts. --Dominic Wills

No Doubt-The Singles 1992-2003 (an unbiased review).......2007-06-17
No Doubt fans will undoubtedly be thrilled to own a compilation of their favorite band's hits all on one album. Casual fans will want to partake so that they can own an album that contains mostly recognizable and loveable hits from the group.
Here's a rundown of the songs (along with my rating for each song):
Just A Girl-4/5
It's My Life-4/5
Hey Baby-3.5/5
Bathwater-4/5
Sunday Morning-4.5/5
Hella Good-3.5/5
New-3.75/5
Underneath It All-3.5/5
Excuse Me Mr.-4/5
Running-4.5/5
Spiderwebs-4/5
Simple Kind of Life-3.5/5
Don't Speak-4.5-5
Ex-Girlfriend-4/5
Trapped in a Box-3/5
So what's to like about this album? As I said above, casual fans will recognize 80% of the songs on this album. The only songs that I didn't know were "Sunday Morning" (my new favorite track from the band), "New", "Excuse Me Mr.", "Spiderwebs", and "Trapped In a Box". Fans of older No Doubt songs will be content with "Just A Girl", "Bathwater", and "Ex-Girlfriend". Fans of newer No Doubt songs will be entertained by "Hey Baby", "Hella Good", and the newest song on this album "It's My Life". There's also ton of different kinds of music to choose from. From reggae-influenced "Sunday Morning" to the more electronic sounding "Hey Baby" to the classic No Doubt sound (it's all about the guitars, baby!) in "Excuse Me Mr." to the ballads like "Don't Speak", this album is sure to please everybody!
Lyric-wise, this album has everything! You have songs about breakups and seperations. And you have songs about being "Just A Girl" and songs that make you just want to get up and dance. Vocal-wise, I prefer the older No Doubt songs to the newer ones. Gwen's voice is perfect for its genre.
Furthermore, the songs aren't in any particular order so if you listen to the album straight through, you get an eclectic mix of old and new songs.
And what's not to like? Honestly, nothing. I love every song on this album although I have to be in a certain mood to listen to the newer songs.
My rating: 5/5 stars. There's a ton of entertainment on this album. Whether you're a fan of the band's music or you just like great music in general, this album is a must have for your CD collection. It's one of the first CDs I pull out when I want a mix of everything. You won't know how much you want this CD until you have it in your hands!

Big and moody, Staring at the Sea compiles some hits and near misses of these excavators of the dark soul. Beginning with their earliest hits--the sparse "Killing an Arab," the aptly tedious "10:15 Saturday Night," and the charming "Boys Don't Cry"--this collection stops before the comparative giddiness of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.Musicians first, brooding art types second, The Cure's unique instrumentation doesn't get the credit it rightfully deserves. The thrashy, trash-can break in "Jumping Someone Else's Train," the sprightly synthesized recorder of "Close to Me," and the techno-pop disco lines in "Let's Go to Bed" and "The Walk" are downright brilliant in their effectiveness and simplicity. A string of money shots if ever there was one. --Steve Gdula
Album Description
Stunningly brilliant is the only way to describe the new Wired Remorse album appropriately titled "The Ides of March." The album whose theme of backstabbing and revenge comes thru as loud and aggressive as anything since Siouxsie and the Banshees "JU JU" or Joy Division's "Unknown Pleasures." While the tribal drum beats will remind one of Dead Can Dance, Killing Joke or even Bow Wow Wow. The minor guitar barrage and whaling singing should force you anticipate the best "old school" album in years!Customer Reviews:
Not impressed...........2007-04-10
A great collection, but only of real value to collectors........2006-08-23
Often the center of enormous controversy, "Killing an Arab" (composed about Camus' "The Stranger", a fine read if you haven't had the chance) has become the unloved stepchild of The Cure-- it was left off the "Greatest Hits" album even though it's one of their most recognizable songs, it didn't make the rarities disc of "Three Imaginary Boys" (like all the other singles from that era did), and as an a-side was excluded from "Join the Dots". The piece itself, with its Middle Eastern swirl and disaffected vocal is fantastic, and really one of the great early Cure songs. Fans of the band will definitely want to hunt down this compilation just for this.
As an overview of the group, it certainly does a reasonable job up until 1985, fro mthe band's very early singles, soaked in post-punk primitivism but with an air of careful thought, one more fantastic than the other ("Killing An Arab", "10:15 Saturday Night" and "Boys Don't Cry") to their early developments in exploring the sounds that would establish their reputation ("Primary", "Hanging Garden") to some of the great pop songs they'd eventually be equally well known for (the vastly superior single mix of "Close to Me"). Still, with the band having been in existence for another 20 years, there's a lot more to cover, and "Greatest Hits" does a much better job as a career retrospective.
If you're new to the band, get the "Greatest Hits" record, it's a great overview. If you're a diehard, get this one for "Killing An Arab".
An Excellent Compilation of Early Cure.......2006-07-13
I Give You Exhibit A.......2006-06-03
Here we have 17 songs that make the case, and make it very strongly. Sometimes these singles were dark and brooding ("Charlotte Sometimes," "Jumping Someone Else's Train," "Boys Don't Cry") sometimes they were surprisingly upbeat and catchy ("Let's Go To Bed," "The Love Cats,") sometimes they fell somewhere in between ("In Between Days," "Close to Me") but always they were solid pop songs that pushed the boundaries without sacrificing listenability.
Yes, "Staring at the Sea -- The Singles," makes its case flawlessly and as if that wasn't enough there is Exhibit B -- the additional 18 tracks on "Galore: The Singles 1987-1997."
A compilation in need of remastering.......2006-05-06
The album is an interesting look at the progression of the early Cure from punk rock to new wave. One can hear the band grow into more complex arrangements and more elegant lyrics. While the beginning and the end of the album are incredibly strong, it is the middle of the album the suffers the most. Seemingly, the hooks that grabbed you with "Boys Don't Cry" disappeared into a sort of drone. However, with "Let's Go To Bed", the songs begin to pop out and grab you again.
However, that is not to say that the middle part of the album is lacking. Given a few listens, a few of the songs do show themselves as strong, like "Charlotte Sometimes", a few still show themselves as weak, like "Other Voices".
From the highs ("A Night Like This") to the lows ("The Caterpiller"), the album does give the best overview of The Cure's early career.
While the best of the music has aged very well, one part of this album has not - the sound. The master used is from the early days of CDs, and this album's mastering shows off every fault that the CD has in terms of sound. The sound can be lifeless on some tracks ("Killing An Arab"), too cold ("Love Cats"), too harsh ("The Forest", "Charlotte Sometimes"), and at best is just acceptable ("In Between Days"). The sound does harm the music, and frankly, it is in serious need of a remastering job.
However, while the sound is terrible, it is a price one has to pay in order to get a quality over-view of their early period. Forget "Greatest Hits", which boasts superior sound but has a pretty poor selection, and pick up both this and Galore if you are looking for an overview of The Cure's career.
