Product Description:
Tracks range from the gospel tinged melodies from Martha Carson's 'Satisfied' to the hard rocking proto-rockabilly of Freddie Bell & The Bell Boys' 'Hound Dog'. Obvious country roots such as Red Foley's 'Hearts Of Stone', Kay Starr's 'Fool, Fool, Fool' & Willy & Ruth's 'Love Me' are complimented with up-tempo R&B from Joe Turner's 'Shake, Rattle And Roll' & tender blues from Ray Charles' 'I Got A Woman'. The album contains 21 tracks which result in a pretty awesome & eclectic selection. Rev. 2005.

One of the most inspired cobbled-together-from-a-stack-of-records soundtrack albums since Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski matches the goofily ramshackle spirit of the Dude, the hero of its celluloid companion. While offering Bob Dylan's luv-addled "Man in Me" together with the Gipsy Kings' redefinitive "Hotel California" and the psychedelic-era Kenny Rogers nugget "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," Lebowski also gives longer play to some cuts barely sampled in the film, including Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings." Whether taken as a Coen brothers mix tape, a one-album CD carousel, or an apropos souvenir of one wiggy flick, this is a smart, eclectic buy. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars terrific!!.......2007-06-30

this is a fantastic album, if you like ecclectic music, that is. easily one of my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad... but missing something........2007-04-17

This cd definitely has some good points. A great song by Dylan from the opening credits and my favourite, "Dead Flowers" done by Townes Van Zandt. But tremendously written by Jagger and Richards. Funny how my faves are from the start and end of the film. Between these two songs and a rousing "Hotel California" by the Gypsy Kings, I'm happy enough, but oddly, no Creedance. What am I gonna listen to while reaching for that joint I dropped in my lap in the car?

3 out of 5 stars 8-miles high track... better in movie........2007-03-19

The song that goes with the Treehorn dream sequence in the film (Kenny Rodgers et al "Tripped on a Cloud/ 8-miles high") was better in the movie, as the version on the cd is a poor original edit, with ackward reverses (and I like reverses, when not halfway through a measure...- for example, the reverse that opens it up is fine, the one three quarters through or so, you see, is not.), half measures chopping up the rhythm and in general either hastily done or naively... I've toyed with the idea of re-editing it myself in a track editor, but I'll just delete it from my player, because I'm lazy. The other tracks are good, but with a few odd ones like the feminist chant song- play this at your next Halloween party/[...]. I have loads of creedence, so not missing that. the Gypsy Kings' "Hotel California" is the best track, much better after first listen as anyone who has watched Lebowski more than a few times will be surprised by the new verses at first. "The Man in Me", if you don't already have it, isn't exactly representative of Dylan's work in large, but is a nice ditty. The Mancini song is filler. Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings" rocks, and I'm glad it was included despite being minutely used in the film. Anyway, it's a good cd all in all, but only for "Hotel California", and "My Mood Swings"... otherwise the Kenny Rodgers' song is bad, should have been re-edited... Probably the reason it was obscure to begin with... The Man in Me is widely available. My advice... wait and find Gypsy Kings elsewhere. Same for Costello and Dylan. Not the best playing mix.

4 out of 5 stars what the f*ck?!.......2007-03-06

No Tumblin' Tumbleweeds. That's a bummer, man, uh, you've got to have Tumbleweeds in there, the film f*cking OPENS with it, man, and it's in there again later with the Stranger. This is a f*ckin travesty. F*ck it. I'm goin bowling.

5 out of 5 stars camd908.......2007-01-05

The Dude is the man for our times. John Goodman makes Walter the crazed Vietman vet a classic movie side kick. And what can you say about Donny except he loved to surf. Happy Trails.

    Album Description

Elvis Presley's early months with Sun Records and the brief, hazy period he spent performing on radio shows in Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas, have generated a substantial list of songs that he either never recorded commercially or have since been lost. In order to give the Elvis fan an idea of these mythical songs, this compilation endeavors to collate the original versions of these songs which inspired Elvis to try them out for Sam Phillips or to perform them for a radio or live audience in those long-lost days of the mid 1950s. Featuring Elvis' favorite Country artists from mighty Hank Snow and Eddy Arnold to lowly Fairley Holden and Billy Hughes along with a smattering of jump and R&B tracks, this compilation is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. 3 out of 5 stars Unpretentious and catchy,.......2006-12-21

"Velvet Elvis" was commandeered as the name of a late '80s/early `90s band from Kentucky consisting of Dan Trisko (guitar, vocals), Scott Stoess (bass, vocals), Sherri Magee (drums, vocals) and Jeff Yurkowski (keyboards, vocals). This self-titled release was produced, mixed, and recorded by Mitch Easter.

The music is unpretentious and catchy, and this CD will perk things up on a road trip even if it may not garner attention if blaring at a party. The musicians sound poised and confident, on the brink of that big break that never came, a story repeated countless times.

The awful CD booklet, save the front cover, did the band no favors.

These 1954-56 live recordings of a young Elvis Presley (still a teen on many of them) appearing on the Louisiana Hayride radio show out of Shreveport, Louisiana, have long been considered some of rock's most important documents, despite their often shrill and distorted sound quality. Their sonic limitations and legal status (most were recorded prior to Presley signing with RCA) have also kept them marginalized. Those sound problems (the original crude recordings were made solely through the singer's vocal mic, which often obliterated Presley's acoustic guitar and Bill Black's bass) inspired Tomato Records to commit what some may consider heresy on nine of the best-sounding recordings--that is, recruit contemporary musicians to recreate the muffled guitar and bass parts and dub them back into the mix. The results are both subtle and unobtrusive, giving the historic performances some much-needed immediacy. If the included Hayride intros and promos and Lucky Strike commercial give the collection some additional perspective, they also help pad the running time of what is an otherwise very brief CD. Still, a burnished Presley in his Sun prime (including Presley's landmark first Hayride appearance, showcasing both sides of his first Sun Records single, "That's All Right, Mama" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky") is hard to resist. --Jerry McCulley

      5 out of 5 stars A by gone time...........2007-02-02

The older I get the more i really enjoy the music of the past. I am really sick of the over produced, over fixed music that American is pushing out by the thousands. I really love classic, real music. If you can't sing your shouldn't. What I LOVE about this album is the raw, real Elvis. This is why he was the king. You can hear the love of the music in his voice, the love of what he is doing. If you are a fan this is one of the best recordings that you can buy. Makes me realize why I am a fan.

      4 out of 5 stars Time capsule.......2002-10-10

Listening to this is like finding an old reel-to-reel recording made by your parents from a radio show. It's more a historical recording than a "good listening" recording, although the restoration is brilliant. If you're interested in hearing (the young) Elvis at his very best get the Sun Sessions CD. If you want to hear Elvis and feel like you're sitting in the waybackradiomachine, get this one. No reason you can't have it both ways...get one of each!

      5 out of 5 stars elvis 30#1 hits.......2002-09-26

5 out of 5 stars Elvis Like We'd Never Hear Him Again.......2002-08-27

This disc features the first ever "live" recorded performances of Elvis Presley taken from the famous radio show "The Louisiana Hayride." Only 19 years old at the time of the first performance, Elvis simply shattered the status quo. The energy, the power, the excitement he delivered was like no one before or after. The CD, ROOTS REVOLUTION, brings it all home. Slamming together blues, gospel, country and swing, Elvis took tunes like "That's All Right, Mama," "Maybelline," and "Baby Let's Play House," to new heights. Before long Elvis would be bigger than life, adored by millions, but at the time of the Hayride recordings it was still unadulterated, raw and real. I highly recommend this disc to any and all music fans.

5 out of 5 stars So, this is how it was? Wow ! ! !.......2002-08-20

The "Roots Revolution: Louisiana Hayride" CD is successful because the music included is clear and it is probably the closest you can get and imagine how Elvis, Scotty, Bill and DJ Fontana sounded during those early live concerts. The CD comes with a mini book which contains anecdotes of the Hayride shows with black & white pictures of Elvis and an explanation of the restoration process. For those fans who were not present in those early concerts but want to experience how it was, this is a must.

UK compilation designed to unravel the inspiration behind the biggest rock 'n' roll star the world has ever known. The fifth release in the successful series, following Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac & Eric Clapton. Tracks range from the gospel tinged melodies of the Golden Gate Quartet 'Precious Lord' to the hard rocking proto-rockabilly of Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup 'That's All Right', 'So Glad You're Mine' & 'My Baby Left Me'. Obvious country roots such as Hank Williams 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' & Bob Wills 'Faded Love' are complimented with up-tempo R&B from Wynonie Harris 'Good Rockin' Tonight' & tender blues from Lonnie Johnson 'Tomorrow Night'. 21 tracks which result in a pretty awesome & eclectic selection.

4 out of 5 stars A must for serious students of Elvis.......2006-03-23

When Elvis Presley recorded That's All Right Mama on 5 July 1954 he changed the face of music forever, though he couldn't know it at the time. Of course his music did not appear fully formed out of nowhere and he barely wrote a song in his life. That's All Right Mama had been recorded by its author Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup nearly ten years earlier in Chicago and is just one of 21 recordings that provided source material for the aspirant rock and roller to be found on this instructive collection.

Elvis was equally at home with hillbilly, gospel and blues music, as well as mainstream pop, and it was his amalgamation and assimilation of these influences that led to the creation of rockabilly and to his incendiary success.

The earliest recording is the Jimmie Rodgers version of Frankie And Johnnie from 1929, which had been recorded by Mississippi John Hurt the year before for Harry Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music, and the most recent included here, although he continued to cover contemporary material throughout his career, is from 1950, by Ivory Joe Hunter. He went on to become a friend of Elvis' and wrote several songs for him, such as My Wish Came True. Elvis's musical tastes were wide and while few would argue with the merits of Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys or Wynonie Harris, some might query his love of Old Shep by Red Foley.

One of his rare composer credits turns up on Love Me Tender, alongside that of Vera Matson. This comes from the film of the same name about the American Civil War, starring Elvis, and so it was fascinating to discover that it had been adapted from a Civil War poem from 1861 which had been set to music as Aura Lee, and recorded by many artists including the Shelton Brothers in 1937.

Other CDs in this series have been sparse on information but, apart from a lack of composer credits, the sleeve notes here break down every track with pertinent details (a couple of songs are written about that do not appear on the final version of the CD). No serious student of Elvis can afford to be without a thorough collection such as this.
