Album Description

There was a time when country fans didn't listen to rock music and rock fans didn't listen to country. It was the way of the world and there was little room for exception. Today, every form borrows from those who came before. Rappers sample jazz and rock, while electronic artists re-envision Elvis. So it's no wonder that a number of respected country artists would tackle the genius that is Bob Dylan. This disc compiles the greatest countrified versions of Dylan ever recorded.

Includes an out-of-print Buck Owens song, plus collectible tracks by Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs with Bob Dylan, Country Gentleman and Norman Blake. Liner notes by award-winning writer Eddie Gorodetsky, who appeared in the Dylan film Masked And Anonymous.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OK Dylan covers.......2006-12-19

AMG had a fairly glowing review of this CD, so I checked out a copy from our public library network to give it a listen. Although it's a pleasant enough collection of Dylan songs - and with a few real highlights - Jerry Jeff Walker's take on "One Too Many Mornings" for example, I don't think the CD as a whole warrants serious praise.

A few of these covers I have elsewhere in my collection, not to mention some of the Dylan versions, so there's no need for me to pursue this further right now. Still, if I see this at a bargain price, say under $5, I might scoop it up.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed.......2005-01-21

Good idea, but the track selection could have been better. There are many more true country covers that could/should have been used, instead of several of these tracks that are bluegrass or folk rather than country. Dave Dudley, George Hamilton IV, Ray Stevens, Jerry Reed, The Browns, John Anderson, Statler Brothers come to mind. I was also surprised to see the re-use of Restless Farewell from A Nod To Bob, another Dylan tribute from just a couple of years ago.
FYI: Nashville Skyline Rag is Earl Scruggs with Bob Dylan, and Heartland is the Willie Nelson & Bob Dylan duet. Bob also plays harmonica on Boots of Spanish Leather.

3 out of 5 stars best version of Dylan song by another artist...?.......2004-06-02

I would say "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" by the bluegrass band The Seldom Scene with vocals by the late great John Duffy. Too bad it was left off this CD... would have been a great fit. Also, "Rita Mae" by Jerry Lee Lewis (from his late 70's Elektra LP) would have been an cool country-rockin' choice for this collection. Overall, though, I guess this is a nice mix of the obvious and the obscure. And heaven knows there is plenty of material out there for a Volume 2 (including the two I mentioned).
Let's hope they're working on that now!

3 out of 5 stars mysterious.......2004-05-26

Why, in this era of of iTunes et al do CDs like this exist? Any of us can now pull together a mix CD based on whatever theme we like. The only reasons for relying on the record companies to pull something together like this:

1) Liner notes/documentation. Well, these liner notes are worthless! And, the recording details are minimal.

2) Great songs not currently on CD. OK, I gotta give them their props here: Glen Campbell's take on "If Not for You" hasn't been in print since the early 1970s. Ditto for Buck Owens'"Love Minus Zero." And, bonus points for unearthing the Kitty Wells take on "Forever Young."

3) Great remastered sound. Nope.

One out of three...ain't good. And, to make matters worse, "Dylan Country" doesn't even live up to its name. I love the Byrds. But (a) they aren't a country band and (b) this isn't even their best rendition of "You Ain't Going Nowhere." Almost every country music great from the 1960s-1980s recorded a Dylan song. So, why does this compilation feature dubious acts like Jennifer Warnes (Jennifer Warnes?!), Tim O'Brien and Peter Ostroushko, while passing on artists like Jerry Reed, Flying Burrito Bros., the Carter Sisters, Flatt & Scruggs (though, granted, Scruggs is here), Doc Watson, Kris Kristofferson, Carlene Carter, Toni Price, Jason & the Scorchers, and others. Passing on Emmylou Harris's definitive cover of "Every Grain of Sand" in favor of "When I Paint my Masterpiece" is similarly odd.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Compilations I've ever Heard.......2004-05-19

This has got such a great lineup of country music legends interpreting Dylan's music, I don't even know where to start.

Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Hank Jr., Buck Owens, Kitty Wells, the Byrds, and Ms. Emmylou are just a few who do spectacular versions of Bob's classic material as well as some lesser known work. The tracklisting is great, the artists are spectacular and the performances are extraordinary. Buck Owens' "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" might be the best thing on here, if it weren't for Kitty Wells' "you have to hear this to believe it" take of the anthemic "Forever Young" to close out the disc. I am not kidding when I say next to the Hank Sr. and Gram Parsons tribute CDs, this might be the best thing I've heard for a compilation.

Check this out, it seriously has not left my car stereo since I got it.

5 out of 5 stars Kitty in good voice.......2007-03-18

even though these are not original recs. Nice sounding and enjoyable. highly recommend. Amigos guitar is awesome.

2 out of 5 stars Not a great remake.......2006-04-30

The young voice is missing on this one. I have some of the same songs on vinyl records. If I had listened to it first, I would not have bought it. It might be OK for someone not familiar with the original recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Great Singer as Always .......2005-09-24

I am really tired of all these people going around and giving one star ratings for every album of remakes just because it's an album of remakes!!! I suppose they would give someone a bad concert review because their live vocals were not the original recording! Judge each individual recording on it's own merits please (1) are the vocals good? (2) are the songs good? (3) is the production good? Ok, these remakes are not as an outstanding a production as the originals yet these are still very enjoyable tracks with Kitty singing remarkably strong well into her senior years.

1 out of 5 stars Beware - Remakes.......2005-05-14

Classic country songs, but not classic performances/productions. Instead these are cheaply produced remakes. If you are at all particular about such concerns as I am keep, keep looking. As seen on TV - who cares?

Amazon.com essential recording

Miss Kitty Wells, dressed demurely in gingham and uttering ne'er a cussword, was the role model for women in country music until Patsy Cline came along. "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels" is one of country music's defining moments. In it--as in most of her hits--Kitty was wronged and betrayed by a feckless man. Titles like "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God," "A Woman Half My Age," "Icicles Hanging From Your Heart," and "I'd Rather Stay Home," pretty much fill out the story. Kitty sings with patent honesty, only rarely venturing off the three-chord highway, and never to dance on the tabletops. --Colin Escott

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-05-25

If you are a fan of Kitty Wells, or just a fan of vintage country and western music, this CD is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Paints a good picture.......2004-05-07

I give this 4 stars not because this is the definite Kitty Wells collection, because it isn't. I give it four stars because it is one of the few collections that offer a good sampling of her ORIGINAL recordings.

Now, let me tell you about an ideal Kitty Wells set. Take all of her top 10's and some of her lesser known songs and there you go, it's not that hard to figure out.

By listening to the songs here, you imagine that Kitty bacically played the housewife who was fighting for a say in what went on. True, but there was much more to her than that.

She was a masterful honky tonk singer, an excellent gospel singer, and when the "Nashville Sound" hit in the 1960's she mastered that also. In fact, Kitty was probably one of the most versatile performers in country music history.

To summerize, this is a great set, all the songs are original recordings, and the notes are awesome. But, you need to hear a lot more of her songs to understand what she was all about.

And also, avoid her Step One recordings as well as anything that in on Deluxe, Compass, or anything that doesn't say "Decca," "MCA," or "Bear Family" somewhere on the package.

Pray that Bear Family will release a 28 or 30 song cd of her hits.

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Country!.......2003-12-21

There must be a reason amazon posts this selection first among the Kitty choices. This one is a winner. Muriel Ellen Deason ("Kiity Wells") is a true to life native of Nashville. According to Billboard, she had 64 chart hits from 1952 to 1968. A representative 11 of them are included here and the other 5 fit right in. Kitty's plain and plaintive woman wronged no frills voice shines through. Highlights for this reviewer were "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God?","Password" and especially "A Woman Half My Age". That one just may be in the "Stand By Your Man" league of forgiving women songs! Those last 2 came late in Kitty's career and were composed in the (then) new "Nashville Sound". This woman is versatile! She handles those just as well as the traditional releases. This CD is absolutely recommended for no nonsense country sung by a real lady of the old school. As we know all too well, that school has been out of session for a tragically long time.

5 out of 5 stars Kitty Still The Queen.......2002-06-17

This CD is absolute evidence that Kitty is still the queen of country music. In fact I don't think she even has a close rival for the title. She is the Hank Williams of female singers, the highest compliment I can pay her. Buy this CD and see what I mean

5 out of 5 stars Undisputed Queen of C&W.......2002-04-09

I'm a big fan of Patsy Cline's music but in all honesty her vocal sound was more in line with pop music than Country. It doesn't however take away from any of her greatness. But Kitty Wells was pure uncut Country all the way-The female Ernest Tubb if you will. Two of my all time faves are on this cd- The classic "Will your lawyer talk to God" and "Password"-- oh yeah "It wasn't God who..." is also a favorite. These are the original tracks and therefore make this cd worth buying. We love ya Kitty !

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Country.......2005-10-07

I am impressed with the "20th Century Masters" series of Country Music, and this is a real fine collection of the purest voice of country music. Sure, there were many other songs which could've been included here, but this is a fine sampling; and they are well mixed. I have had the good fortune of hearing many of Kitty's albums on their original LP's while growing up, and the clear sound of the CD actually surprised me. While the album obviously covers Kitty's response to Hank Thompson with "It Wasn't God....", the two finest tracks here are "Searching" and "Heartbreak USA". I would love to see many of her original LP's rereleased on disc; Lord knows we need it with today's offering coming out of Nashville. Buy the disc (and dont be afraid to purchase others in this 20th Century Masters series...they are good). After watching CMT and GAC, it's refreshing to harken back to the days when ladies had real class.

3 out of 5 stars Budget-priced collection of Country's queen.......2002-06-30

As the first real female star of country music, Wells holds a special place in both its hit-making history, and as a primary influence on the female voices that followed in her footsteps. Her first hit, 1952's "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels," not only provided a lyrical rebuff to Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life," but staked out a feminist viewpoint that had never been heard in country music before. Her other answer songs, and hits like 1959's "Mommy for a Day" (written by Harlan Howard and Buck Owens) found their voice in Kitty Wells, detailing the emotional travails of a woman's life, and opening the door for Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and others.

By the mid-60s, Wells' hardcore fiddle-driven backings found moderation in the Countrypolitan sound, but her uncompromising hillbilly twang still shone through. Even the backing choruses of "Heartbreak USA" and "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God," and the double-tracked vocal of "You Don't Hear," couldn't dilute the emotional strength of her songs or the Southern roots of her singing. Though late-60s radio had moved on to smoother crossover material, Wells remained a very popular concert attraction.

MCA/Decca's collection focuses on Wells most productive years at Decca, covering 1952 through 1965. These are original recordings, produced by Owen Bradley, and digitally remastered for CD release. (Several other domestic collections, including Tee Vee Records' "Twenty Greatest Hits" and Step One Records' "Greatest Hits, Volume 1" and "Greatest Hits, Volume 2," feature re-recordings, and are recommended only to completists.) The selections, like the "Country Music Hall of Fame" collection, are weighted towards ballads, but unlike the HoF disc, this anthology includes a pair of fine Red Foley duets, "One By One" and "As Long as I Live." Newly penned liner notes from Joseph F. Laredo provide a quick career overview.

The only way to gather a more complete Kitty Wells catalog on CD is to pick up import releases. Edsel's "God's Honky Tonk Angel: The First Queen of Country Music" offers up 25-tracks, and Bear Family's "Queen of Country Music" provides four packed CDs. In both cases, be prepared to pay import prices. Those looking for a simple introduction to the queen of country music will find this twelve-track budget-priced sampler a fine overview.

3-3/4 stars, if Amazon allowed fractional ratings.

5 out of 5 stars Most Awesome Collection of Country Queens Ever Packaged!.......2005-05-25

This Time-Life collection of the 20 greatest female country singers of the 1950's through the 1970's has been such a blockbuster success in the television commercial hawking it has been parodied on Saturday Night Live with Jennifer Aniston! This is truly a historic collection of legendary performances that every country music fan should own, spanning from Kitty Wells in the early 50's to Barbara Mandrell in the late 70's. These are the ORIGINAL recordings too! Almost every song on this CD was an essential ground-breaker for country music, a true landmark record! These are songs ("The End of the World", "Ode to Billie Joe", "Rose Garden", "Help Me Make it Through the Night" etc. etc.) that even those with just a passing knowledge of country music are well familiar with and many of these ladies - notably Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton - are true American pop culture legends. Every song and every performance is truly a classic unforgettably performed by as extraordinary a collection of female vocalists as any music genre ever had in a single generation. Certainly today's country "divas" cannot compete with these QUEENS. Every artist here is represented with her signature hit with the curious exceptions of Kitty Wells (her classic "Making Believe" is featured instead of the historic "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"), Donna Fargo ("Funny Face" may have been a bigger pop crossover but "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA" is surely Donna's most famous song), and Brenda Lee (represented by "Break it to Me Gently" instead of say, "I'm Sorry"). Lee's presence on this collection is the only sour note for me; yes she was a legendary pop artist who recorded in Nashville but this does not make her a country artist. Her song here "Break it to Me Gently" was not even released on the country music market!!! Nor were any of her other 60's pop hits issued to or played on country radio. The fact that she had a modest career later in the 1970's in the country music market does not make her vintage pop oldies now country records!! Her place should have been filled by Jeannie Seely ("Don't Touch Me"), Jan Howard ("Evil on Your Mind"), Susan Raye ("LA International Airport"), or Billie Jo Spears ("Blanket on the Ground"). Nevertheless, this still remains an awesome collection of every important country queen from Jean Shepard to Crystal Gayle to Connie Smith to Emmylou Harris to Dottie West - every one of these women (with the arguable exception of Ms. Lee on whom I may be being a tad too critical) rightfully deserves to be known as one of the true queens of country music.

5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Box Set.......2006-07-18

Thank God for Bear Family Records. This box set is their project covering the true Queen of Country Music, and like all of their undertakings, this one delivers. Kitty Wells requires no introduction, but like all of the Bear family Box Sets, this one includes a large color booklet covering the discography, recording career, and even personal life of Kitty. Of course, her biggest hits are here, including "It Wasn't God...." and "Heartbreak, USA", but just as importantly, her earliest recordings are here to. And, her outstanding duets with none other than Mr Red Foley are here as well. You just can't go wrong with this set. Get it, play it, and enjoy it. A+

5 out of 5 stars It's hard to believe how many perfect songs are on this box set.......2006-03-16

I love Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline and I intend to listen to them for the rest of my life, but there is no female country singer I love more than Kitty Wells. In fact, with the possible exception of Hank Williams there is no country singer male or female who I like as much. There are so many perfect songs here, so many great musicians backing her, so much heartfelt emotion that I know I haven't even begun to digest everything these CDs have to offer. This is country music unpolluted (it seems) by a desire to appeal to the pop music audience. I am a middle class man in my late twenties who grew up in Seattle and I have never even traveled to the south, but for some reason when I listen to her music I feel like I'm getting inside the songs. Everything just comes together so perfectly - the beautiful simplicity of the the songs themselves, the musicians backing her with minimalist grace, and then Kitty Wells herself who, like Billie Holiday or Robert Johnson, just sounds like she believes so strongly in what she's saying.

I just have one complaint to air that does not concern the contents of this CD. I wonder why there are so few Kitty Wells CDs available? There are a handful of budget CDs all with more or less the same songs on them and then there is maybe one or two decent 17 song collections with a few additional tracks. So basically if you are getting into Kitty Wells you've got to jump from one of these CDs to this 100+ track box set. I suppose one can take comfort in the fact that there's enough quality material here to make it very worth it. Sure, the best songs are in the first 10 years of her career, but there's hardly a bad song on any of these CDs.

1 out of 5 stars BEWARE PRICE.......2005-02-15

Amazon has this exact same Bear Records box listed under a different AZIN number for about $18 less. I didn't try putting both versions in my cart to see if they actually listed differently - but one should beware...

5 out of 5 stars the true queen of country music.......2000-09-28

This box set contains the literal birth of country music for female artists. These selections are songs that earned Kitty the title of the queen of country music. Any true fan of country music must have this collection. the material is classic and as it is heard, a chapter in American history and the evolution of country music is revealed. Long live the Queen

5 out of 5 stars the queen of country music (BOX SET).......1999-12-22

I have 26 Kitty Wells 33 albums at present. Most have been played them enough to tape. I still think she is still queen of country music. I enjoy her music. This is great slection of her song she released.

5 out of 5 stars Twice The Listening Fun!.......2007-02-10

A terrific comp of REAL female country singers. It's a shame we have to buy imports of our own artists to get the good stuff. Worth the price for the song Twice The Lovin' In Half The Time alone.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary RARE package of early Country Female Vocalists.......2005-02-27

This is the most awesome collection of early country female vocalists I have ever seen!!! Looking for a CD with Jenny Lou Carson? Goldie Hill? Molly O'Day? Rosalie Allen? How about certified country queens Kitty Wells, Jean Shepard, and June Carter singing rare songs. If that's not enough how about Patsy Cline singing a track PREVIOUSLY NOT KNOWN TO HAVE EXISTED? Well, folks this is what you have been looking for!! Here are 23 performances from everyone from the legendary Minnie Pearl to the quite obscure Judy Perkins, Ann Jones, and Penny Nichols. These recordings were apparently recorded for radio broadcasts on particular programs but no information alas about where they came from is noted. Highlights include Rosalie Allen doing a superb cover of "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels", Goldie Hill singing the pop hit "Make Love to Me", and Patsy Montana singing a comic novelty "Mama Never Said a Word About Love". And yeah, and Patsy Cline singing a fine, previously unheard number called "When A House is Not a Home". This is a CD that NO lover of country music history should be without.
