Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30

Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.

Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".

Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.

For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.

Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile.There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

The Everly Brothers of Australia?.......2002-01-04

I have a weakness for obscure Australian pop music from the 1960s. To a non-Australian, this set is a real find.

Bobby & Laurie originally recorded individually as solo artists until 1965 which is when the bulk of the material on this generous disc was recorded. Paired up, they offered attractive two part tenor harmonies. They wrote a decent proportion of their material and selected canny outside material to cover, drawing mostly from southern U.S. rockabilly, country and r & b sources. Consider such items as "Trouble In Mind," a great version of "Crazy Country Hop" and a clever beat group rendition of the over-used "Goodnight Irene." They claim the distinction of being the only act at the time never to sing any Beatles songs onstage. They also manage to avoid Everly Brothers tunes here, but that's who you will be reminded of.

A part of the credit for the enjoyability of Bobby & Laurie's music on this set must go to their backing band, the Rondells. This four piece outfit provided just the right sort of six string underpinnings to the two singers.

The material on this CD consists of both sides of four singles, an album and an EP. To round things off, six tracks from their earlier solo careers are included. The most entertaining of these is Laurie Allen's "Wolf Man," surely inspired by Joe Meek's Screaming Lord Sutch records. After 1965, Bobby & Laurie moved to Albert Productions (also responsible for the Easybeats). This fine Canetoad collection does stops right there. Perhaps Albert can be induced to exhume some of their tapes.

True Finnish Tango?.......2001-08-12

Having recently returned from a wonderful summer vacation in Finland, I found myself sitting here in a sweltering New York City with a mad jones for some true Finnish tango. A quick Amazon search turned up this CD, which I of course ordered straight away. The disc has all the classics of the genre, including Satumaa, Liljankukka, and Kotkan ruusu. They are, however, rendered virtually unrecognizable by Mr. Salminen's operatic bass voice and the fact that the music is done by a symphony orchestra. Not a single accordion to be heard! While the melancholy Finnish tango easily lends itself to this type of reinterpretation (and it is very well done), if, like me, you are looking for "true" Finnish tango, played in the dancehall style by a small combo with mournful, yearning vocals (as opposed to Lord of Darkness vocals), you are bound to be disappointed. Maybe this will turn some opera buffs on to Finnish tango, other than that, I can't figure the intended audience. It certainly is a curiosity. Perhaps it will grow on me (I am not the biggest opera fan)....
