Customer Reviews:
an under-rated classic.......2004-03-11
the cover: Conway in a black sweater, with his arm resting on a brick ledge looking sad and somber as he's probably thinking of the woman who no longer lives with him at that house in which now, he explains in the song, he spends his time talking to ghosts because "her memory keeps me company in that House on Old Lonesome Road". Well, as a whole, "House on Old Lonesome Road" is an under-rated classic album by Conway. it arrived in 1989 and boasted a huge #1 Cashbox hit, the lead-off track "She's Got a Single Thing in Mind". track 2 "Who's Gonna Know?" was the third single from the album...it hit the Top-20 in 1990, reaching #19 in Cashbox. the title track also hit #19, but in Billboard. The other seven songs are good too. "Private Part of My Heart" should have been a single. however, it was way ahead of it's time because it's pop feel wasn't yet embraced on country radio like the sound is now. "Child With Child" is a topical song, not what you'd expect to hear on a Conway Twitty album. It deals with teenage pregnancy of all things. "Play Ruby Play" is a bouncy dance song. "Pieces of You", while a good performance, should've been the album's closing song. "Too White To Sing the Blues" is a bluesy rock number. "Nobody Can Fill Your Shoes" and "Take Me Home to Mama" are filler songs when compared to the other material. i'll assume that the album would've STILL succeeded even without those two songs being included. Amazon says the album is out of stock. it's a long-lost album by now...it's 15 years old...so if you ever find this album, grab it up because it's so rare!!
