Editorial Reviews
Rising from the honky tonk haze of New Orleans, comes Ghost Town, tipping their hats to Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and Buck Owens, while creating their own distinctive brand of boot-stomping, hip-swaying country.
Barely one year from their first public performance, Ghost Town released their debut CD "Electric Hoedown" - a collection of powerful songs about lonesome nights and broken dreams, from tear soaked ballads to saloon-shaking rockers.
Singer/songwriter Christian Serpas' original songs fuse memorable hooks with sometimes haunting flashes of traditional country sounds to create a compelling, unique hybrid.
"Ghost Town combines clever, hook-ladened compositions with a classic country sound that marries Dwight Yoakam's twang to Chris Isaak's echo-y high-lonesome guitar," wrote music critic Keith Spera in the New Orleans Times Picayune.
Powered by the sizzling guitar work of George Neyrey, and anchored by drummer Jeff Oteri and bassist Joe Lincoln, Ghost Town's high-energy live performances feature originals like the rousing sing-a-longs "There Ain't No Good In Goodbye", "There She Goes" and "Sixty Seconds", the dance floor-filling ballad "Beginning of the End", and the rocking "That's It, I Quit, I'm Gone". Other highlights include a blazing version of Johnny Cash's legendary "Folsom Prison" that would make the Man in Black proud, an explosive interpretation of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", Buck Owens' roof-raising "Tiger By the Tail", and the showstopping classic "Mystery Train".
Ghost Town played their first show in April of 1999, and only four months later they won the New Orleans JIMMY DEAN TRUE VALUE COUNTRY SHOWDOWN. Following a summer filled with festival performances, the band closed out 1999 by opening for Randy Travis and Brad Paisley at the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, and performing before the New Orleans Saints / Dallas Cowboys game in the Louisiana Superdome. In 2000 they opened for Kenny Chesney, SheDaisy, Terri Clark, Daryl Worley and Steve Holy, along with headlining their own club shows.
By blending strong, radio ready originals with dramatic, yet reverent renditions of traditional country classics, Ghost Town is attempting to stake out a place for themselves in country's bright future, while never forgetting its storied past.
"There's a new sheriff in town," wrote Northlake News music critic Roger Kennedy about Ghost Town, "and he brought along his guitar."
Welcome to Ghost Town.

Slawson does it again!.......2003-11-05
Brian Slawson
This artist is a percussionist, with a wonderful sense of what works with Bach. I recognize there are different kinds of purists, with different levels of tolerance for ways in which Bach music is 'stretched.' For instance, I really cannot tolerate *harmonic* stretching of Bach. (It's only rarely that modified Bach harmony seems acceptable to me, but surprisingly, there have been instances.) Slawson's transcriptions are harmonically faithful. (There are some odd sounds, due to the peculiar acoustics of such things as bells. The overtones of bells, as you might hear, are characteristically different from those of instruments such as winds and strings. Actually, the piano has somewhat of the same problem, in milder form.)
Brian Slawson transcribes Bach for percussion. He uses all sorts of percussion, from tubular bells to steel drums, to synthesizer. It is interesting always, and often wonderful. Each track has to be assessed separately, since the treatment varies from track to track, even between one repeat and the next.
The first CD I bought of Slawson's was Bach on Wood, which seems to have since become somewhat of a classic. It is available used through Amazon, on a label which seems to belong to the Sony/CBS family. This CD contains a number of pieces by Bach and others, the crowning glory of which is the Quodlibet from the Goldberg Variations. Every single note is there, lovingly played through the magic of multi-layering, --or maybe this fellow can do it all in real time. Percussionists must be marvellously skillful people!
Recently I acquired Bach Beat, apparently his third effort. Slawson has returned to the High Baroque. Not surprising, given the rhythmic excitement of music of that period. Composers represented are Bach, Handel, Purcell and Vivaldi. The tracks are:
1. Brandenburg Concerto No. 3
This is the last movement. Compare with Walter Carlos's treatment. I think Slawson is a little more fun!
2. Organ Concerto No. 2, BMW 593
3. G-Minor Minuet
4. Largo
5. One Badinerie
This is the last movement from orchestral suite number 2 in B minor, which is fun done in almost any transcription.
6. B-Minor Minuet
7. Hornpipe
The brilliant Alla Hornpipe from the Watermusic. Not the best version I've heard, but still very good.
8. Sarabande
A well-known Handel Sarabande, repeated a few times too often ...
9. Galoppiére
A rollicking tune from the Royal Fireworks. Very nice!
10. Gavotte 4/8
11. Winterland
12. Roach
13. Too Hot to Handel
"Surely he has borne our griefs" from Messiah. A surprise.
Chez Goldberg : a selection of Goldberg variations with fanciful titles.
14. Die Küche (The Cookery)
15. Die Welpen (The Puppies)
16. Der Regen (The Rain)
17. Der Schmied (The Blacksmith)
18. Der Hammer
This is the intense C minor prelude, I believe, from the Well-Tempered Clavier. However it's played, it feels as though your head's getting a pounding. The name is appropriate. It sounds wonderful on percussion. (Have an aspirin handy!)
19. Black Forest
20. Minuet in D
21. Village Parade
22. Bourrée
23. Elegy
24. Victory March
All the tracks are at least a lot of fun. Many are really fantastic. One track, in particular --I think it's 12-- is a wonderfully sly treatment of the A minor 2-part invention. This one made me chuckle! You simply have to hear it!

Archimedes

Album Description
Having chased after it for most of the decade, Nod has now snuck up on a sound utterly all their own. Continuing in the vein of their SLR debut, Magnetic Anomaly, is Nods new batch of too-tremoloed post-garage goo - Radio Giddy-up. Sporting the inspired, nostril-filtered yelps of Scrappy Joe, loosed in fractured somnabulistic melody lines that somehow find their way perfectly into the tight bass/drum pocket provided by Tim Poland and Brian Shaffer, respectively, the undulating grooves resemble early Talking Heads in that you simply cant believe folks this white manage to get this funky. The dry as bones production magnifies the crisp snare snaps, cymbal static, crusty guitar grease, and the rubber band-est bass this side of Bootsy.Moments like the single-string Verlaine-on-ludes riffage of Love Is On Fire, the infectious gang vocal coda of For Me For, the vaccum-sealed unison stutters of New One, and the Beefheartian bramble of Beefy, make the best case for the the bands uncanny knack for assimilating and expanding on whats come before. The performances sound captured rather than wrought; the songs reveal themselves to the listener in the same way they mustve to the band. Getting the trad. stuff right (and using the right trad. stuff), yet also adding to the vocabulary in ways only an inspired misappropriation can. Radio Giddy-Up is the sound of a band on top of their sound.
