Jim should be the most popular comedian in America right now, he's definately the funniest at the moment in my opinion. His material on being lazy and hot pockets is classic and this came with a bonus dvd so it's a hell of a deal. Check out Beyond The Pale it's even funnier!

Smoking Babies, Manatees, and Orville Redenbacher.......2007-02-02

Comedy CDs are an iffy recommendation. What's funny today might bore you tomorrow. Some jokes are only funny the first time. Jim Gaffigan's CD, "Doin' My Time," scores high on the replay factor. Perhaps it's his delivery (dry self-deprecation with a twist of smug). Perhaps it's his avant-garde style of humor (he spends about a quarter of the time pretending to be a critical female member of his own show, weaving "her" comments with his). Perhaps it's just his voice, which has a malleable whine to it that never gets annoying and which makes his self-mockery seem humorously authentic instead of just patronizing or pathetic.

Part of it is definitely the humor itself. Whether his jokes make bizarre 180's ("I used to smoke. Yeah. Smoking's real addictive. But you know what's REALLY addictive? Heroin."), or whether their humor lies in their dead ends; whether they take the "didja ever notice?" concept and snap it in half (his "Hot Pocket" and bottled water/Mexican food bits are a good example of this), or whether they're just plain crude, grouchy, silly and dumpy, they all stand up to repeated listenings. There are a few times where you get the impression that the joke -- such as his bit on glasses -- would work a lot better if you could see the man (and, in fact, most of them are like that; Jim is almost as much fun to watch as he is to listen to), but none of them fail to be laugh-worthy because of it. Pasty, flabby, and grumpy, though he may be, Jim Gaffigan is also a funny, funny man, and this is a funny, funny CD.

(NOTE: This product comes with a short DVD of his Comedy Central appearance, which is much cleaner than the act to be found on the CD.)

Beyond the Pale is my all time favorite...Doin' My Time runs a close second.
Gaffigan is a staple for anybody who enjoys stand up.

Jimmie Skinner reissue long overdue.......2003-12-04

Jimmie Skinner sang country when country definitely wasn't cool. His gravely voice and sidekick Ray Lunsford's electric mandolin were unique. His style was similar to that of Jimmie Rodgers and Ernest Tubb and Johnny Cash resembled him in some ways. Skinner's song-writing talents were superb. Skinner was never a superstar, but he left a body of music from country's golden years that deserves preservation and reissue. Bear Family Records scores again with "Doin' My Time", titled after Skinner's biggest song. It was a hit for Flatt & Scruggs in the late 40s and Cash made it Skinner's most rewarding royalty maker when he did it on the live Folsom Prison LP. "Doin' My Time" is a beautiful boxed set that includes six CDs and a wonderful 12" by 12" book in color. The text and photos are great and there is a discography. Five CDs include Skinner's Red Barn, Radio Artists, Capitol, Decca and Mercury releases along with some acetates preserved by the singer's family and a few bluegrass songs made for mail order sales. The sixth CD is a real treat where Skinner taped his unfinished autobiography. This set took me back 50 years to when I listened as a teenager to his songs nightly on WCKY in Cincinnati, a 50,000 watt station that reached much of the country with its Jamboree. Nearly a quarter century has passed since Skinner's death. Bear Family deserves thanks for taking us back to the life of this wonderful singer.

This is a really great example of the talent this man has developed through his career. Excellent arrangements, flawless delivery of the melody, a lot of his individuality comes out in this recording If your going to play fiddle this is the guy to listen to.

Every once in a while you hear something new played all the way through and you want to hear it again because it strikes you the right way. Everything sounds good on this disc. At close to 50 minutes of music it still ends too soon. When you hear it you'll know what I mean. This is a keeper.

Aubrey Haynie leads a pack of all-stars through a set of standards and originals with spectacular results. The guy not only has technique to burn, he plays some of the most interesting and musical solos (on fiddle AND mandolin) you'll ever hear. If you like bluegrass played with energy and fire, look no further. Aubrey Haynie has the goods and then some. "Cherokee Shuffle" alone is worth the price of the CD.

I own the Hollywood Bowl Gershwin CD and I love it. I was surprised by it. Play the samples if you can but the singing and sound are clear and crisp and you can understand every word.

The recording is excellent and replaces my old 78 recordings which I transferred to tape some years ago. But they have that horrible hissing noise which spoils my enjoyment of them.
It is to be observed that although the cast is American, the orchestras and conductors are British (except for Debroy Sommers). I know qite a bot about Deboy Sommers and Lew Stone, but can anyone fill me in about Reginald Burston?
The CD is great. Thank you to Amazon for this.
