With their 1999 debut, Tattoos & Scars, the Kentucky-born duo of Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry carved out a robust niche by tapping into the rowdy, long-haired country-boy spirit and stylings of '70s "outlaw" kings like Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr., and Charlie Daniels. The duo has only one original song on Carrying On, their second album, and they mostly rely on studio musicians for their energetic neo-honky-tonk and full-tilt retro Southern-rock instrumental backing. Even so, Carrying On (with its telling double-meaning title) is a much more fully realized and compelling work than their bestselling debut. The antiheroes who inhabit honky-tonk ballads and country-rock anthems like "She Couldn't Change Me," "The Fine Line," "Lucky to Be Here," "Black Jack Fletcher and Mississippi Sam," and their spirited remake of Jennings's outlaw classic "Ramblin' Man" drive too fast, drink and smoke too much, show disdain for urban affectations, and occasionally even contemplate suicide when life and love go bad. And they make no apologies for it. In country's somewhat stifling era of yuppified political correctness, Montgomery Gentry's unreconstructed, unapologetic redneck brashness and fervor blows across the musical landscape like a hearty and welcome "southeaster." --Bob Allen

Look at me ....I'm a tough guy ....just ask that dead tame bear over there. Gentry is so phoney he could be in the Bush administration. Let's make him co-Sec. of Defense! Rumsfeld-Gentry! Yeah, we'd limit our targets to unarmed people but the numbers would be great!

Country Singer Charged With Killing A Tame Bear
(WCCO) Minneapolis Country singer Troy Lee Gentry was indicted Tuesday in federal court on a charge of illegally killing and tagging a tamed black bear.

Gentry, of Franklin, Tenn., and Lee Marvin Greenly, a 46-year-old wildlife photographer from Sandstone, Minn., appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Raymond Erickson in Duluth, Minn. Tuesday morning. Their case being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael A. Dees.

According to the indictment, Greenly sold Gentry a tame, trophy-caliber black bear named "Cubby" for approximately $4,650 in October of 2004. Greenly housed several animals for use in his photography business.

After the transaction, the indictment reports that Greenly and Gentry tagged the bear with a Minnesota hunting license. Gentry then allegedly killed the captive bear with a bow and arrow while the animal was still enclosed in a pen on Greenly's property.

The indictment further alleges that Greenly and Gentry registered the bear with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as though it had been hunted in the wild before shipping the animal's hide to a taxidermist in Kentucky for mounting.

According to the Lacey Act, it is illegal to falsely tag a tame bear for the purpose of hunting.

The bear's death was videotaped and allegedly edited after the fact to make it appear that Cubby had been killed in a "fair chase" situation.

Greenly is also facing two further charges of violations against the Lacey Act, including guiding hunters to the Sandstone National Wildlife Refuge, where black bear hunting is illegal, and unlawfully setting up bear-baiting stations in the area.

Both Gentry and Greenly have been released on bond pending their next court appearance. If convicted on the charges, they could both face a maximum potential penalty of five years in federal prison and a $20,000 fine.

5 out of 5 stars No Doubt- MG's best album!!.......2006-03-22

This has that southern rock sound in it still but this time it also has that good ol country sound as well (which some of Montgomery Gentry's songs lack; but I still am a HUGE HUGE fan)

All the songs on this are great, 'Ramblin man' is one of my fav's; and so is "While the world goes down the drain"

Also, "My fathers son" has that great guitar part in the begininng and I could tell i'd already love it. Also, The Fine Line, and not to mention "Cold one comin on" (what a powerful song!!!) This whole CD is great- not a bad song on it. Definetely MG's best!!!
I think this CD secured Montgomery Gentry's place in the country music business, and their other two after this one backed it up.
MG aren't goin anywhere they are here to stay!!
MG ROCK!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars MG 's sophmore slump.......2005-08-08

This was MG's second cd offering after announcing to the world who they were with tattoos and scars. However IMO this album was a sophmore slump for a duo who has gone on to make two more killer cd's
The CD starts off in a great direction with "She couldn't change me" and "Cold on,Coming on", however some of the other tracks such as "blackjack fletcher" seemed more like filler material to put out a CD to capture the wave they were on. Possibly this is why the CD only stayed as their latest offering for a little more than a year.
If you are a fan of the songs that got radio play (such as " she couldn't change me") or are completeing a collection of MG material, then this is a buy, other than that, Any of the other 3 will satisfy your cravings for southern fried country a hell of a lot better.

4 out of 5 stars Fine, Old Style, Hard Country.......2005-06-09

Montgomery Gentry provides something that has been missing from country music for far too long. They provide a dose of "hard country" that doesn't try and pretend to be a pop crossover. Their music is neither jingoistic nor is it blatantly anti-American. Some may be convinced that they sing to "red state" values while others will be equally convinced that "blue state" working class people are the audience. The truth is that the audience is anyone who likes hard charging country music.

Their vocal style is reminiscent of Hank Williams, Jr. of long ago and their instrumental style bears a lot of the same resemblance. There are definite southernisms in the manner of speech but the messages of the songs would be just as appreciated by a working auto plant laborer in Detroit.

Great Job!

5 out of 5 stars Overpowering!.......2004-12-22

Ralph Stanley II is indeed "Carrying On" the high lonesome soulful sound that busted out of the mountains of Southwestern Virginia with the Stanley Brothers well over 50 years ago. The great thing about this Ralph Stanley is he brings his own distinct country sound that brings additional revival and passion to his father's distinctly eerie and haunting art. I can only say that the first time I heard Ralph II's father was in college on a recording of "Old Richmond Prison," and I said "this is the sound I have been looking for my whole life."

On this amazing album Ralph II reaches back as always and records classics that brought the Stanley Brothers and Ralph Stanley to Country Music Fame. I love the truth of pain of the song "Ain't It Hard." I also have this song on an album entitled "Echoes of the Stanley Brothers," which featured former Stanley giants such as Roy Lee Centers, Ricky Skaggs, and Keith Whitley. The song is just really easy to relate to when you experience this sometimes common pain in life, and Ralph II sings it right. This song is not even the best on the album, which is great! I also like "Mountain Dew" which reminds me of the Stanley classic "Katy Daley." The song has a great vocal drive and ringing banjo. The gospel cut "Map of God's Highway" is a wonderful song that represents so well the importance, dependance, and restoration found in the Triune God.

"Carrying On" really highlights the power of Stanley's vocal talent and uniqueness. He really has a command of some of these slower ballads and you can feel every twinge, ache, and soulful moan! This piece traces his roots with his dad Ralph, and his late Uncle Carter who were the Stanley Brothers until Carter's death in 1966. Ralph has kept going, and I hope Ralph II just keeps continuing to push this unique and soul-stirring sound.

Everything on this album is far above anything coming out of country music or most bluegrass today. Ralph Stanley II is quite talented and a true artist. I have seen Ralph Stanley shows without II singing lead, and he adds so much more versatility with the lead singing. Seeing Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys is not just a live show but a real revival or religious experience, it will overpower you!

5 out of 5 stars Stanley's vocal delivery is smooth with country overtones.......2004-06-29

Playing Time - 35:05 -- "Carrying On" is Ralph Stanley II's song about those mighty big shoes that he has to fill as he builds a name of his own in the footsteps of his famous father and uncle. But why does Ralph Stanley II give us yet another version of "Mountain Dew"? I reckon that he just likes that ol' classic, and it's one that he and his dad enjoy singing together. Other traditional bluegrass songs like his father's "Ain't it Hard" and "Pretty Woman," the Stanley Brothers' "Map of God's Highway," and A.P. Carter's "Single Girl" are very palatable fare. Kentuckian Steve Sparkman is definitely the man who supercharges the more uptempo songs with his adept banjo playing. The real standouts on the slower numbers are Tim Crouch with his twin fiddles, and James Alan Shelton's tasty guitar leads. Other contributors include John Rigsby, Ron Rigsby, David Smith, Lona Heins and Ralph Stanley. Kenny Smith, Josh Williams, Dave Roe jon the mix for Tom T. and Dixie Hall's song, "Welcoming Tomb," and Junior Blankenship picks guitar on "Carrying On."

The younger Stanley has a lot of talent. His vocal delivery is smooth with definite country overtones. He seems more comfortable crooning a slower ballad or waltz than belting out a bluegrass barnburner. That's why one of my favorites on this project is Hargis Kelly's "Devil's Little Angel," sung with his father and Lona Heins' harmonies. As a songwriter, his three originals on this project (You Will Never Be Mine, I Am the Way I Am, Arizona Line) demonstrate another of his proficiencies. "I Am the Way I Am" has a common theme of the loneliness a music-making man encounters on the road. "Arizona Line" is an instrumental which gives Ralph a chance to impress us with his lead guitar work.

Only in his twenties, Ralph II started playing on stage with his dad when he was only 14. He's recorded four solo albums, as well as another with another Clinch Mountain Boy, John Rigsby. We've been able to witness Ralph's musical growth and maturity on such projects as Listen to My Hammer Ring, Pretty Girls City Lights, Clinch Mountain Echoes, and Stanley Blues. Now in full blossom, I have the feeling that "Carrying On" is the album that is going to further launch his career to a greater height. Ralph Stanley II has a long and propitious career ahead of him. It will be interesting to see if he sticks with the bluegrass genre, or whether he might even pursue fame and fortune in country music. He could do either successfully. Album Description

Carrying on the tradition of an acoustic "roots-rock" sound, The New Relics music ranges from energetic, foot-stomping beats to atmospheric,love-making rhythms."

The New Relics serve a convincing introduction to their soulful pop/rock hybrid sound but also as a powerful statement that well played and smartly constructed music is not dead. Led by lead singer and guitarist Michael Arbogast, Casting Stones draws from a wide variety of influences including country, acoustic jam rock and straightforward pop, leading to a mixed sound that has traces of everyone from Dave Matthews Band to the Dixie Chicks to hometown heroes The Recipe. On Casting Stones, they tackle both slow ballads and driving energy pieces, all without any sign of hesitation.
