5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Harmonies.......1999-05-05

This album, as well as all of the music sung by the Sons of the San Joaquin, is extremely well-done. Their harmonies are exacting and their passion for the music shows in their songs....Rhonda B.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Western group of all-time.......1998-11-26

I bought this cd when it first came out a couple of years ago, and it was responsible for my new love of Western music. I hate to admit it, but these guys sound better than the Sons of the Pioneers did! Joe, Jack, and Lon Hannah sound mighty good for ex-school teachers who decided to delve into a new career. Their harmonies are perfect, and their version of "Cool Water" is only matched by Marty Robbins in my book. If you do, or if you ever have liked Western music, buy this cd. You won't regret your decision!!

5 out of 5 stars one smash song after another--takes you right out west.......1998-11-01

harmony, lyrics, a speedy pace, and plenty of volume--our entire family (including a hip hop teen) loved these guys, whom we had stumbled on while riding thru the west. they really evoke the spirit of our great outdoors. a 12 star review.

5 out of 5 stars Confident Masters of Saddle Song.......2005-11-12

The Sons of the San Joaquin have become the current masters of that celestial style of Western close harmony perfected by the original Sons of the Pioneers. As a fanatic for the nature-poem songs of Pioneers founder Bob Nolan, I love the rendition of his "Still Water Pool" found here. Yet the core of this album is Jack Hannah's own songs, of which a standout is "Charlie and the Boys" - a tale of a youngster's first cattle drive with legendary Charlie Goodnight, set to a tune that's stuck-in-your-head catchy (to my wife's annoyance). On earlier SOSJ recordings, the voices were a mite unnaturally forced, and some prior Hannah compositions beat the word "cowboy" to death. Here, though, both voices and writing have found their confident groove, leaving that Prairie-of-our-imagination so much the richer.

5 out of 5 stars Jo and Laura should play more together.......2006-01-05

I'm a big Laura Love fan and my brother is a Ranch Romance fan, so I went to see these two when they came through town a few years back. One of the better nights i've enjoyed. Jo Miller and Laura have fun together and the way their voices fit together is absolutely wonderful. The song selection is great and even non bluegrass fans will find some tunes they'll like. If you like either of these artists, this is a cd to get, even if you think you aren't a bluegrass fan. After you take a listen to this, you'll probably find that you were a fan, you just didn't know it before.

3 out of 5 stars Not typical Laura Love.......2002-01-12

This is a good album if you want to hear traditional bluegrass. But if your looking for the dynamic vocals and interesting lyrics of other Laura Love albums you won't find it here.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, toe-tappin' music.......2001-02-12

I first bought a cassette tape of this recording some years back at the National Women's Music Festival after seeing Laura Love perform. I loaned it out and haven't seen nor heard it since. So I finally got around to buying the CD. It's nice to have it back ! Laura Love is widely know in the lesbian community and some of her songs are of that nature, but if your a true music fan (if you are, you know what I mean by that) you will love this CD not to mention Love's others, no matter your orientation. Laura and Jo's voice meld so beautifully, it takes your breath away. Most of the songs were written by bluegrass greats with no switching of genders so the song will "fit" because two women are singing them. Great production and just plain fun to listen too.

With over 8000 albums and CDs in our collection (a fourth in the blue grass category), I have really enjoyed this disc. Simply produced; haunting melodies and incredible harmonizing...please give us more.

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but a good job.......1999-10-05

One of the least commercial projects I can imagine, but this CD contains some wonderful performances. Miller and Love harmonize beautifully, and their approach to the material is just right -- respectful, but with a feeling for the intent of the songs, whether it be humor or sorrow. In other words, they don't make fun of the music or camp it up, and they get some stellar results. Love's vocal on "There Ain't No Ash Will Burn" is particularly fine. If you want to hear something out of the mainstream, you might find yourself liking this music more than you want to admit.

Many of the songs on this three-CD box set appear on other albums, but not in these versions. These are transcriptions from Autry's Melody Ranch radio show, which aired from 1940 to 1956. As such, they offer up some powerful nostalgia, even to listeners who weren't alive then. Happily, though, the music's just as potent on its own terms. Hollywood's singing cowboys (and their music) had little to do with real cowboys (and their music), but it's hard to debate authenticity while Autry is so agreeably crooning "Back in the Saddle Again," "You Are My Sunshine," and "Don't Fence Me In" to the friends and neighbors out there in radio land. --John Morthland

3 out of 5 stars Melody Ranch radio stuff...........2007-01-03

If you're looking for the original "hits", don't buy this. If you're into rare radio from the "Melody Ranch", and want to hear rare, live, alternative tracks, this is for you. I'm a big Gene Autry fan, so I couldn't turn this off! "Don't Fence me In" is slowed down, missing the instrumental break, has a cool choir back-up, and was quite a shock to me. These are not the original Columbia recordings, most are radio broadcasts, but the sound quality is great, and all 3 CDs flow nicely. If you are from the era that spawned this wonderful music, I'm sure you will swoon! I was looking for the recorded versions that I was familiar with, so this collection was a bittersweet find. Still, well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RADIO BROADCASTS FROM GENE AUTRY.......2006-03-21

I agree with Mr Schwent: a boxset like this should specify on the cover that it does not include the original versions of the collected songs. And I actually wonder why Rhino, who are usually so accurate when it comes to their releases, did not warn the buyer about it. The fact that the boxset features unreleased cuts from Gene Autry's "Melody Ranch" radio series is a real plus to purchase the set, especially for those of us who already have the studio versions of these songs, some of which were not recorded commercially by Autry.

Autry's relaxed style, so close to that of crooners like Bing Crosby (who also recorded several country and western songs), shines throughout the three CDs, in some cases even beating the studio versions to a punch. Guest stars such as Jo Stafford and Rosemary Clooney add to the charm of the radio broadcasts, which capture the magic of 1940s radio, complete with spoken introductions by Gene, who sings before a live audience. The booklet is illustrated with dozens of pictures and includes a fine essay by Ranger Doug (from Riders in the Sky), as well as song-by-song commentary.

All in all, the set is a must buy for all Gene Autry fans. Since it is out of print, I strongly advise everyone to get a second-hand copy while they are available. You won't regret it!

Hey a Gene Autry boxed set!!!! What a disapointment. Now this isn't bad music by any means. I rushed out and got this, got it home and discovered 80% of these recordings are not the original hit versions, they are versions off his TV show. Now why not mention that in great big letters on the cover. Only when you read the booklet inside do you discover this. You think you should be let in on this information.

5 out of 5 stars MELODY RANCH RADIO.......2000-03-13

GENE AUTRY FANS WILL LOVE THIS SET. IF YOU LONG TO HEAR SOME OF THE OLD RADIO PROGRAMS THAT WERE AIRED EVERY SUNDAY ON MELODY RANCH RADIO PROGRAM,THEN THIS IS IT. UNFORTUNATELY, NONE OF THE DRAMA SCENES WERE INCLUDED, BUT ALL SAID AND DONE THIS GIVES YOU A HINT OF WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO LISTEN TO GENE AUTRY'S MELODY RANCH YEARS AGO. ONE OF THE BEST SETS OF SONGS EVER COMPILED. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR AVID GENE AUTRY FANS. IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHY THEY CALLED HIM "AMERICA'S FAVORITE SINGING COWBOY" JUST LISTEN TO "SING, COWBOY, SING" AND YOU'LL UNDERSTAND WHY.
