PASS THE TEQUILA! AND LISTEN TO THE BRASS! MY FAVORITE!.......2007-07-12
I am repeating this story you are about to read as it gives an explanation of why I love this music so much! "Going Places" has many songs on it used on the ride you are about to read about. It is my favorite Herb albums and contains my personal favorite "More and More Amor". That being said....Please read on.....I have fond memories of the music of Herb Alpert! I was introduced to him at an early age as my parents were fans of his records. I didn't hear much of him again until I was coming of age in Wildwood N.J. at the age of 15 when I used to party under the boardwalk with my friends and our girlfriends underneath Hunt's Pier's "El Scrambler" ride. The ride played Herb Alpert tunes non stop! I guess you could say I became a "Man" underneath that pier with my first love listening to the Tijuana Brass. Later in life in my 30's I was taking a break from playing in a band in the local bars,I became a DJ and I would mix Herb Alpert in my mixes and buy shots of Tequila for my fans! To this day when I play these songs at parties we all look for the Tequila bottle! This is a one of a kind sound and if I were stranded on a desert island with only a few albums, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass would be included in that collection! This is one of his best albums. I no longer own the original records so, I can not say if the new cd's are true to the originals. They sound fantastic to my ear! I no longer own the original records so, I can not say if the new cd's are true to the originals. They sound fantastic to my ear!
A musical piñata that'll have you sold !!!.......2007-04-03
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass put out yet another great album when they released Going Places. This album contains 12 tracks full of pep and vitality that'll make you want to jump up and dance and then beg for more!
The CD starts off with "Tijuana Taxi." This familiar theme features the horns and percussion doing a great job of carrying the bulk of the musical arrangement. The peppy feel of "Tijuana Taxi" sets the tone for a very enjoyable album with lots more to come.
The next track, "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," is a cover of the instrumental classic number originally performed by Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra. The guitars, percussion, drums and horns featured in this number reflect an excellent arrangement.
"Spanish Flea" justly earned its popularity because of its relentless happy arrangement that also had a romantic feel to it. No wonder this was the Bachelor's Theme on The Dating Game! The horns on "Spanish Flea" pop out at you and you will enjoy this number. In addition, "Walk, Don't Run" has a certain '60s rock and roll flavor to it that is mixed together with the signature sound of The Tijuana Brass. This produces a great effect and "Walk, Don't Run" has a certain punch to it that I rarely hear these days.
"And The Angels Sing" shows Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass doing another cover of this great song by Mercer and Elman. Awesome!
The CD ends on a celebratory note with the theme from Zorba The Greek. The arrangement and tempo hold your attention very well; and this number ends the CD on an especially strong note.
The liner notes have great art work and Herb Alpert himself contributes an essay about him and The Tijuana Brass. The quality of the sound is excellent, too.
I highly recommend this for fans of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass; and people who enjoy easy listening music will also enjoy this CD.
The Tijuana Brass, Going Places.......2007-03-04
By the time of this recording, Alpert's success was here to stay for the rest of the sixties. This album basically picks up where Alpert left off on the previous, Whipped Cream record, but with one difference. Herb Alpert had formed a permanent group lineup of musicians known as the Tijuana Brass.
Tonni Kalash, trumpet; Bob Edmondson, trombone; John Pisano, guitar; Lou Pagani, piano; Julius Wechter, marimba; Pat Senatore, fender bass; Nick Ceroli, drums.
The album opens up with the smash hit, Tijuana Taxi, then floats right in to the standard by Tommy Dorsey, I'm Getting Sentimental Over You. Herb takes this tune at uptempo, unlike the original version, something he liked to do with a lot of tunes. Track 4 is Spanish Flea, probaly one of the biggest hits ever recorded. The tune was written by the Tijuana Brass' own, and leader of Baja Marimba Band, Julius Wechter. This song has been recorded by over 60 artists, so they say.
On the original lp, side one came to a close with Third Man Theme. A pretty wild number. Side two opened up with a rocker. The Ventures' Walk Don't Run. John Pisano's Felicia is a very beautiful track. Some other highlights are the happy Cinco De Mayo and the pretty And the Angels Sing. The album comes to a close with the wacky, Zorba The Greek.
A transitional record, Alpert was on his way to outselling the Beatles, with his next release, What Now My Love.
Why do people mock Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass?.......2006-10-10
For many reasons, all unjustified. For starters, they were briefly more popular than the Beatles. It was a studio band and its lead performer overdubbed himself. Its success bred bad imitators, dozens of them, from the Nashville Brass to Ray McKinley's Glenn Miller ghost band (shouldn'ta done it). Then Alpert licensed his music to the Longines Symphonette Society for a multi-disc LP box set. Bad move: it identified the Brass with "easy listening" and a-Lawrence a-Welk. His sound showed up on albums by (among others) Dionne Warwick, the Carpenters, and Burt Bacharach (who enlisted him for "Casino Royale" and briefly owned A&M stock), and on "The Newlywed Game", "The Dating Game", and those atrocious Ant and the Aardvark cartoons. ("Hey Ant!") He also sold chewing gum. Then, as quickly as it came, the Brass went. Alpert became a pop elder statesman and supposed the platinum-selling solo MUZAK he subsequently churned out was better, and some CD transfers in the late eighties came and went too. A&M's huge sale to PolyGram (now Vivendi) and a resulting lawsuit didn't help. Finally, several years ago, prodded by an online Brass fan club, Alpert relented (thank you, Internet), and reissued almost all his output for CD a second time, and are we Brass fans glad he did.
It's stuff you can never tire of. This may seem strange given how the Brass's albums got played to death; but after they disappeared they almost never showed up on the radio again, thus avoiding the fate of most pop hits, which can be tiresome solely for lurking wearily around any corner. It's not just Alpert's musicality that shines through, it's his versatility; you could never pigeonhole him, and nowhere is that more evident than on "Going Places", perhaps his best album. Herb wasn't afraid to tackle anything. We see it especially in his covers: the lively "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," which happily doffs TD's formal wear; the very go-go "Walk, Don't Run", better than the Ventures' version (yes it is); "And the Angels Sing", with its suave strings; and "A Walk in the Black Forest", snappy and eloquent. He used top-notch backers like Julius Wechter who make the guy sound even better. And if Alpert's trumpet playing may be a matter of debate -- he was certainly not a "muscular" player, yet his style identifiably owes something to Harry James, who was -- he could work clever and stylish effects out of his horn, and he deserves more credit for his fine work than he'll ever get.
Alas, these reissues don't seem to have inspired a new wave of mass Brass shining, but so long as Sony/BMG can keep them active, we diehards will be happy -- and with luck, at least a few new listeners will get to know and love this most musical of pop sensations.
Two minor drawbacks: Alpert's insistence on issuing each album separately at a fairly high price point (with luck it will come down over time), and the @#$%&* DIGIPAK packaging, which deserves a one-star review of its own.
Still The Best in Time.......2006-08-28
!!Going Places!! is a classic album. Herb Alpert's music is an easygoing blend of jazz and Dixiland with the flavor of South-of-the-Border charm. This album is a product of a time when the Tijuana Brass was truely !!Going Places!! The songs haven't lost a bit of their excitement, and they are, and always will be, timeless in their popular appeal.

Intriguing, yet lacking.......2007-07-15
The reviewers who likened Gustavsen to Keith Jarret have it right, I think. Gustavsen copies a lot of Jarret's rhythmic and melodic motifs, although "melodic" is a bit of a stretch here as there are no real melodic themes that are developed through a piece. There's no dissonance, nothing too create even a tiny bit of tension that could be resolved to create something more than a meandering flow of pleasant sound.
Gustavsen here reminds me of some of Jarret's more unstructured (and, I hesitate to say, noodling) improvisations in his longer pieces, and as one reviewer notes, there's a little similarity to "My Song". As for the Bill Evans comparison- not even close. Evans could take a well-known melody and develop it into something exquisite yet still recognizable. His own compositions were infinitely more sophisticated harmonically and melodically than what we hear from Gustavsen.
Where the Evans comparison is apt, I think, is in the classical roots that permeate both musicians' work. Evans was strongly influenced both melodically and harmonically by Chopin, and Gustavsen seems to find more of his inspiration in the tone poems of a Grieg or perhaps Sibelius, though not to the extent that Evans incorporated Chopin in his harmonic conception. In short, this is an intriguing piece of background or easy listening music, but I'm not hearing the kind of complexity or sustained development that draws the listener in and involves him or her with the music.
Placid and Ever So Smooth.......2007-04-08
My introduction to Tord Gustavsen came via The Ground which was highly recommended in a respected national magazine known for its elevated tone and sophisticated taste. I liked that CD well enough, but I like Changing Places even more. It is indeed mellow, placid, and ever so smooth and it may even be sleep-inducing as one reviewer suggested, but it is pure bliss from the first note to the last.
What makes Changing Places so good is not just the relaxing vibe, but the way it flows so evenly, each tune blending seamlessly into the one that follows. I have no favorites here, I like the whole CD. Its just the perfect background music for relaxing on your porch with a favorite beverage or for calming your nerves while doing paperwork at the office.
Changing Places has me eagerly looking forward to the next Tord Gustavsen Trio CD. If you like laid-back pianocentric jazz, then you should enjoy this as well.
The best kind of candlelight jazz.......2006-11-09
Changing Places reminds me more than anything of an ice sculpture: it's a thing of crystalline beauty, light and delicate, almost ephemeral. But there's a gorgeous range of colors, and it always seems to be shifting and changing with the light.
This is piano-trio jazz made for snowy/rainy days, quiet moments and the small hours of the night. Even "IGN" with its up-tempo bluesy feeling doesn't break the fragile beauty of the overall mood. Gustavsen has an exquisite touch on the keys, but more importantly, his musical sensibility covers not just jazz but folk, blues, Latin rhythms and whatever else he comes across. It's all blended into something contemplative and reflective. The notes fall as gently as snowflakes. Rarely does such instrumental sophistication come across as so smooth & easy to listen to. Just as importantly, TG's trio are telepathically attuned to each other. They work together, they interact and respond to each other with an effortless grace, and they recognize the value of silence just as much as the value of the notes.
It seems impossible that any label can keep making so many albums (let alone so many with this same instrumentation) and keep making so many more beautiful than the last. But somehow ECM still does it. This is no exception. Best enjoyed by candlelight, although any quiet time will do well.
An absolute heartbreaker.......2006-03-31
This album is an absolute musthave.. even if you never listen to jazz music, this album is so strong you'll like it anyway. It really takes you away, tord's way of playing sounds smooth and honoust. Tord Gustavson absolutely comes in the top 3 modern 'white' pianists, with Brad Mehldau and Joey Calderazzo.
Piano trio beauty at an unexpected level.......2006-01-14
"Changing Places" is a piano trio beauty and already my favorite late-night jazz recording. In depth mutual understanding of the art of the modern lyrical piano trio, makes this recording a must to have for everyone who loves the melody. My first encounter with this great trio was with the excellent Norwegian vocalist Silje Neergaard (3 excellent cd's on the Universal label). Having been to multiple Tord Gustavsen Trio concerts in Norway, drummer Jarle Vespestad shows a seldom growing quality as a drummer with outstanding brushwork and syncopated "loose" drumming. Gustavsen has becoming a somewhat piano superstar in the international jazz community and even frequent on pop charts, and his to ECM CD's tells you why. Third CD named "Live At The Village Vanguard"??

another classic firesign theatre.......2007-07-09
If you are not familiar with these guys, they are a irrational comedy group that played on the radio in the late sixties(?) Therefore they lend themselves well to audio cd. You got to imagine these guys were smoking the good stuff when they wrote these albums. It takes a little concentration to catch all that is going on, but it absolutley hilarious and well written and performed. If you like this one, order the others...have an adult beverage or two or whatever and temporarily enter the world of firesign theatre. You'll want to share with your friends.
Masters of Their Universal Whatchamacallit !.......2007-04-25
Dear Friends, in the long time ago a quad of superior beings from the Dogstar left their humor, in the form of
insight, funny names, scatological jokes and drug references on vinyl in an abandoned auto in East LA. This is
not that collection.
This is a magical journey through American history, F Scott Fitzgerald, Jack Poetland and Raymond Chandler-
on acid. It is addictive, it is tobacco, it is powerful comedy that will infest your dreams, your speech patterns
and make your common-law family members consider you "weird!".
Beware but taste the rapture. This is Book 2, Sides 3 & 4 of the Book of Firesign-CONSUME !
I like this record as much as my dad did........2007-02-03
When I was a child, my father and his brother used to listen to this record all the time. I thought it was sort of amusing then, but he insisted that it would be much funnier when I got older, and that it got funnier to him every time he heard it.
I didn't understand that logic then. I get it now.
On the surface, "How Can You Be Two Places At Once" is genuinely funny comedy, but with every additional listen, it actually gets funnier. Their are subtle jokes laced within jokes throughout the record, my favorite of which is a pizza order attempt in one skit that is tied into the Nick Danger piece later on.
Also, "The Further Adventures of Nick Danger," the longest installment of this character on record, is over 12 minutes of absolute rediculousness, in the best possible way.
Although some bits are less funny for those such as myself, who weren't alive when it was recorded, it is an excellent buy. I recommend it.
Clever and intellegent........2006-07-17
This is one of the group's best efforts. The Nick Danger Skit IMHO is a classic. Also is Ralph's Spoiled Sport Motors.
Orgin of the high test sales pitch.......2006-02-19
Firesign Theatre makes you believe that "zany" is the color of modern life. This album is a brilliant and funny mix of overlapping realities (much like life). I heard it 30 years ago and it's just as bizarre and entertaining today.

Of all the downtrodden intellectuals turning skate-punk into emo, Dashboard Confessional's Christopher Carrabba is by far the most bruised. With just an acoustic guitar and some choice words, the Ben Folds sound-alike turns the concept of the love song on its head with The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most's torrent of poetic abuse aimed at girls who've taken advantage of his good nature. From "Saints and Sailors" ("This apartment is starving for an argument / Anything at all to break the silence") to "The Good Fight" ("I claimed you as my only hope and watched the floor as you retreated") to "Screaming Infidelities" ("So kiss me hard because this will be the last time I let you"), Carrabba is unapologetically bitter. Yet while his love life may be a tragic mess, the pure cathartic joy he derives from putting the ladies in question back in their place--evident from his venomous acoustic attacks--is unmistakable, infectious, and fantastically liberating. Wallowing in self-pity has seldom been so much fun. --Dan Gennoe

nice.......2007-04-19
I have every Dashboard album known to man, and the one that stands out the most dramaticly in my collection is "The places you have come to fear the most" Although it may be his most "underground" (not to sound like a cliche scenekid) it is deffinitly the best, his guitar soars and so do his lyrics and his singing ability is undoubtitly astounding, i definitly give it 10 out of 10.
Best dashboard cd.......2007-03-17
My personal favorite dashboard cd. Every other one of their cds have maybe a few good songs that I like, but the places you have come to fear the most has pretty much a solid tack list
Great CD loved every song on it .......2007-01-04
I loved every song on this CD and it is one of the few i can listen to repeatedly without getting bored. The lyrics are excellent and you can really feel the emotion in the lead singers vocals. Some find this CD depressing but i dont i think it is reflective and contemplative and sometimes a little depressing but beautifully so
Now this is the DC CD to have!.......2006-11-11
You have to have this CD in your collection. Most would say this is a sappy, whiney, college kid with a guitar, but Chris did a really good job on it. I think it's true grit. It's stark. It's vulnerable. The best out of all of em.
true to DC.......2006-09-20
This album is perhaps the rawest, most emo of Chris Carrabba's, but in a good way. In most of the songs, he uses a range of voice not found in other albums, and can get so soft, so gorgeous that you WILL tear up. For anyone who's experienced a heartbreak, the bitterness of these songs are easily related to. Simultaneously, though, h a sense of empowerment as most of the songs deal with him moving on with his life. I usually will listen to this cd if I can't sleep, because the last couple of tracks act as a sort of lullaby (even though the last one ends with a lot of screaming).

byrdman classic.......2007-06-23
This is the bomb!!!! jazz/funk that still stands the test of time, every track of this stellar recording, reminds of when i was a young man, sitting on the stoop listening to this and many other great artist of this era,a must for any who can appreciate early jazz/funk/fusion.
There are no words ..........2006-12-21
What amazes me about music as I research and study it as I do, is the fact that I can still be surprised and how fluid an album can be 20 plus years after it's inital release. Being of the hip-hop/turntablism era, with all the sampling we do, all that I can say is that this album is responsible for a lot of what we know today. From Black Moon/Smif-N-Wessun, to Pete Rock, to Tupac, this album has been generously sampled (like a LOT of the Blue Note catalog) for good reason. Driving bass accompanying lush grooves make this a great listen and a must have for any music lover. True instrumentalism is of the order here. Flutes, violins, and rolling keybords abound and for 1976 this was a forward thinking album. It's a shame that the stubborn dinosaurs that traditional jazz fans can be turned their nose up at and turned their backs on Donald Byrd, accusing him of 'selling out', yet this is no different from what Miles Davis was trying to do with his fusion; and what Herbie Hancock and Ramsey Lewis have done throughout most of their careers. What a tragedy for this is some of the best jazz fusion to be had from anyone, anywhere.
Had to have it!.......2006-07-06
Donald Byrd is a classic artist. This album has some mellow music that relaxes the sole. I have it on vinyl, and have been searching for it on cd. So glad to have found it!
Not Your Imagination - This is Real!!.......2006-03-22
Many jazz aficionados would say in general that Donald Byrd "sold out" by exploring more of a commercial/contemporary music sound as opposed to staying with traditional jazz and exploring moreso in that genre. On this album, Donald Byrd, really took a back seat to superior producers Larry and Fonze Mizell. The key to songs like Dominoes and Places and Spaces is the catchy melody/harmony these guys came up with. Then top it off with a phenomenal breakdown as you transition from the melody. Yes DB, with his talent, could have done more traditional jazz. Yet Donald Byrd showed that you can explore new rhythms with the combination of acoustic and electronic instruments. Gotta have this in your collection. Keep swingin.
This belongs in the Hall of Fame.......2006-03-11

Come Back!!.......2007-05-26
No lie one of the best albums I have ever owned. It has been in my car since 2003...if someone knows the members of this band...please encourage them to get back together!!! I need more of there music...one album is not enough.
a bright star that faded too fast.......2007-04-04
Like probably everybody else, I first heard of Revis from their single Caught In The Rain off of the Daredevil soundrack. I immediately loved the song and vowed to get the album of this band that I had never heard of. Wow, was I impressed! Places For Breathing, the one and only album from Revis, is strong stuff. I especially like Justin Holman's voice. It is very powerful and obviously sung with a depth and emotional quality that we don't get from a lot of lead singers. Caught In The Rain, the opening track, is a little harder than the rest of the songs here, but make no mistake; this is a great album from start to finish. It isn't music to bang your head to; rather, it is strong, thoughtful, mood-creating music for the contemplative rocker. My favorites on here are: Caught In The Rain (obviously), Seven, City Beneath, and Everything After. I really, really like Places For Breathing, and hope these guys get it back together and bring some more great alt-rock to the table. There's way too much musical talent here to let fade away after only one album.
Favorite Rock CD.......2006-09-14
There comes only a few times in your life when you discover a CD that hits every emotion, cord, and musical taste in your body and soul. A CD that you play 35 times in 4 days and cant believe you havent gotten sick of it yet. Revis is the band that did it for me. I discovered this band during my senior year of college (3 years ago) on an internet radio station. "Seven" was the song. I turned the volume up in awe, realizing that I had come upon a song that I thought was above anything I had listened to recently. I immediately recognized that this was the same band that wrote "caught in the rain", a song that I had been listening to off of the "Daredevil" movie soundtrack for 6 months already. It took no thought to buy the CD or keep it as my music of choice for the next year. "Your Wall" hit nerves I had never felt before while weightlifting; "Look Right Through Me" and "Living Rooms" made me want to cry, and "Spin" helped me through the emotional toils of senior year. The band is rumored to have broken up, which in my mind is devastating. They will be forever one of the most potent rock bands I've ever listened to. A rock band that I will recommend to everyone and anyone who listens to music for that emotional appeal that is discovered only a handful of times throughout your life.
Original lyrics and great sound.......2006-08-10
First heard a Revis song (Caught in the Rain) come out of a computer game and when I heard samples of the album I decided to give it a go... Good choice! This is an excellent CD with a good combination of solid, strong lyrics with variable paced melodies, Revis really know how to set the mood of their songs. Highly recommended.
Dreamy, catchy, but a tad boring.......2006-04-12
Places For Breathing by Revis is a good, solid, alt rock album. And the disc has cool dreamy sound effects which kinda put peaceful feelings in you. But unfortunatly, most of the songs dont really have a hook that pulls you in and keeps you listening. There are a couple of good ones on here though, these include Caught In The Rain, Seven, Your Wall,Spin, and Re Use. I'd recomend you listen for yourself and see what you think.

Amazing.......2003-10-11
This 2-CD set is really good, and contains his complete numbered symphonies (except, Holidays Symphony [No. 5]) and Orchestral Sets...
First Symphony (D minor!) is a study work, written in school years, so he didn't abandon the principles of harmony(!)
Second Symphony (F Major, except the last chord of music!) contains themes of some famous composers (Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak) and last chord is hysterical of course...
Third Symphony is a winner of Pulitzer, and written for a chamber orchestra
And Fourth Symphony is one of the best compositions by Ives.
Especially 2nd movement is terrific...He used some popular tunes and marches of USA (as usual!) and divide 2 part to the all orchestra. Even so, this movement requires two conductors for orchestra only (!). Orchestration is amazing (ex. quarter-tone piano, more two normal pianos, bells, gongs, large woodwinds, 6 horns, 6 trumpets, 4 trombones, 2 tubas etc...) and choir requires...
All performers are very good. Especially Dohnanyi and his Cleveland Orchestra (in 4th Sym.), Zubin Mehta and his Los Angeles PO (in 2nd Symphony) are excellent...
In other words, this set is a must have for all Ives fans.
Highly recommended...
A great set.......2003-08-18
Ives' four symphonies beautifully summarize his musical development. Unlike Brahms' four, they are not all fully mature works. Each one freezes a moment in his musical development. The first is student work, much in the manner of Dvorak and Tchaikovsky (with paraphrases of each), and the most vibrant American symphony written to that time. The Second does what many musical nationalists of Ives' day thought an American symphony should do -- apply native themes to European models, but as much fun as the result is, it was a dead end for the composer, and he never attempted anything like it again. Mehta and the LA Philharmonic give energetic and fully romantic readings of each, which came as a pleasant surprise to an long-time Ives fan who thought he'd heard all these works have to offer.
The Third comes closer to the mark. It consists of American themes woven together with ingenious counterpoint into wholly original forms. It is a jewel, and just the kind of pretty, low-key piece that brings out the best in Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
The Fourth is the masterpiece, the work Ives struggled toward all his life. Dohnanyi and the Cleveland Orchestra do a creditable job that stands up well to the competition from Stokowski and Tilson Thomas. I especially liked the engineering in the second and fourth movements, which captures some details others don't. (I'd never heard the wind machine before.)
As a bonus, you also get Ives' great orchestral sets, both in fine performances with Dohnanyi. The No. 1, better known as Three Places in New England, is the more famous, but the Second is sublime.
This reasonably priced set is a great, convenient way to acquire some of Ives' best music all at once.
Beautiful Music.......2001-05-13
I agree with Daniel. I, too, had been looking for a compilation of all of Ives' Symphonies, to no avail. Thankfully, Decca has released this gorgeous compilation of Ives' four symphonies, as well as including two orchestral sets.
Ives was a genius at creating uniquely beautiful harmony. And this impeccable set of recordings is a must for any Ives admirer.
Do Not Hesitate!.......2001-03-20
For quite some time, I had been looking for just such a compilation of all the Ives symphonies. When I saw this newly released compilation from Decca, I bought it without a moment's hesitation. And I am very glad I did: This set has very quickly become one of my favorite recordings. Not only the four symphonies, but also the two great orchestral sets 1 and 2 are included as well. Unquestionably, it is these two orchestral sets that make this compilation such an outstanding bargain and, really, an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone even remotely interested in modern classical music.
Each of the symphonies is very well performed, though none of these are what I would call the Definitive Recordings. However, the Mehta performance of the First is exceedingly good, and I don't really see how it could possibly be improved on. . . Dohnanyi's performance of the Fourth is a little restrained for my tastes, but it is nonetheless an interesting interpretation. Dohnanyi more than proves himself a able interpreter of Ives in his performances of the two orchestral sets, which are, without a doubt, the highlights of this album. J. P. Burkholder's liner notes add some very interesting insights into each of the works.
Based on the overall quality of these individual performances, I would give them four stars. However, considering that each of these two CD's contains almost 80 minutes of Ives, and considering the inclusion of these wonderful orchestral sets, this compilation is very worthy to be rated at five stars.

wonderful wildplaces.......2004-07-15
Wildplaces has been on my CD player practically nonstop since purchasing it in 1990 when it was released. Quite simply, the music and lyrics are heartfelt, beautiful, and touch your soul. I think its Dan Fogelberg's best work.
More Great Music From Fogelburg!.......2001-10-18
"Wild Places" grabs one's attention when they listen to it. Fogelburg once again created an album where every song is a good one. It continues to prove that very little is beyond Dan's reach. Each song is unique. The more I listen to the album, the more I have grown like it. I personally like: "Ever On", "Song of the Sea", and "Forefathers". Even though he didn't write it, my favorite on this album is "Dangerous Time." It along with the rest of the songs is pleasant and enjoyable. It is puzzling why these songs don't show up on many of his collection albums. They are as good as any other he's written. This album is another great one, among the countless others, in the Fogelburgs. I think it is essential.
Among the Best of Dan.......2001-04-30
"The Wild Places" is among the best three albums this multi-talented veteran singer/songwriter/musician has ever released. Poetic and throught-provoking lyrics (mainly about environmental and humanitarian issues) set to beautiful, memorable tunes. From the irresistable energetic opening title track to the haunting closing tune "Ever on", this CD once again illustrates what makes Dan Fogelberg such a special artist. On top of nine original (and very personal) songs, "The Wild Places" also includes two covers - the wonderful bluesy "Rhythm of the Rain" and a perfect rendition of Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers in a Dangerous Time".
In a career spanning almost 30 years now, Dan Fogelberg has released an amazing number of high-quality albums without a single weak track. He may have had his commercial "high" in the Early 1980's - his artistic summit so far may very well be in the "grooves" of this recording.
Has its moments.......2001-03-20
This one's a little different. In many ways, I like it, and it's certainly far superior to River of Souls. But... there's a brash quality to the production that's a bit hard on the ears, and Fogelberg's (creditable, don't get me wrong) "thing" about the native people and the environment and all that... well, does it make the best material for music? You don't always want to be that serious and worthy.
But if you do want to be serious, this album has some good tunes (as always) and Dan's vocals are nicely matured. Oddly, my favourite track is probably "Rhythm of the Rain", simply because he sings it so wonderfully. Bones in the Sky is good too, and Anastasia's eyes... though he sings them in a very slightly tortured way that I could do without.
starting off the new decade right.......2000-10-24
Unfortunately overlooked this represents Dan's best work in a few years. Dan wrote an album influenced by his experience with Native American culture. It was a new direction and refreshing after his bitter "divorce" album `Exiles' a few years earlier. Again the songs are heavily geared in native american tradition `Aurora Nova', `Wild places' and `Spirit trail' being prime examples. There is a nice cover of `Rhythm of the rain' which oddly enough would become Dan's last entry into the top 40. David Crosby and old friend Timothy B. Schmidt offer a hand on some of the tracks as well
Dan includes a couple of tributes on this album one is to his ancestors in `Forefathers' and Bones in the sky' is dedicated to the late Georgia O'keefe. The latter is his best writing in some time.
The tour de force on this one though is `Ever on' which closes the album. Trippy is the only world I can think of when I try and describe it, but in a very peyote sort of way. I am not sure if he is referring to a Native American leader, a spirit, or God himself, but whom ever it is will lead us ever on.......

Great stuff from the Kingston Trio!.......2005-11-16
If you longed for some wonderful music from the Kingston Trio then you will enjoy this compilation. They are known for their other hits "Tom Dooley", 'Worried Man", "M.T.A". The selections are first rate. Personal favorite.."Jug of Punch". You'll enjoy them all!!
This is Serious!.......2005-09-20
This is truly a delightful collection. Some Woody Guthrie folk staples such as the classic "This Land is Your Land" (which I always thought would be the ideal national anthem) as well as a good mix of other creations makes this one unique.
The pre-Beatle early 1960s were best defined by the wonderful protest songs; songs of social injustices and the issues that resound to this day. The Kingston Trio, in addition to being just a damn good folk trio also had a wonderful sense of humor, as evidenced in the song, "M.T.A." The songs play the emotional range, from the very sad "500 Miles" (might make you cry), "Reuben James," "Scarlet Ribbons" and "Lemon Tree," which helped make them household names to the very cheery "Greenback Dollar" and "M.T.A." as well as many of the songs on this collection.
If you think these folk masterpieces sounded good on vinyl (and they DO), just listen to how clear, crisp and sharp they sound on CD! You are in for a listening treat. I'll pray for something like this to come along again - as for folk, it is deeply intwined in our consciousnesses; our history and our lives. Folk, which is a musical version of story telling is an excellent unifier - it brings people together. From its early days during the Depression where union workers sang of their rights to the 1960s demonstrations to the world we have today, folk has been a multicolored common thread that has kept the world listening.
Fell out of my seat!.......2004-07-02
Well, this last year I decided to swallow my pride and join the Compact Disc revolution, and this is the first Compact Disc (C.D.) I purchased. I didn't know much about the band but was impressed by the "trio" part of their name-I've always been annoyed by bands where you don't know how many people are in them (see, for instance, the Beatles). I was pleasantly surprised to find this is a great C.D. They obviously put a lot of work into it-some songs even have more than one instrument is playing at a time!
I was so enrapt with this C.D. that I invited my friends over to share a can of Pringles and played this C.D. while we sat around (one of my friends, David, jokingly suggested that I turn up the music so he wouldn't have to hear my voice!). Honestly, folks, the first time I popped this C.D. into my Sony C.D. Player I was so excited I fell out of my chair and landed smack dab on my cat (I make sure to lay down on the couch when I listen to it-sorry Whiskers!).
Make Way for Kingston Trio Goin' Places.......2002-12-05
A combination of one fair album by my favorite group with one of their better ones. "Make Way" has none of their more outstanding efforts, although "Blow The Candle Out" is good.
"Goin' Places" has several of their best: "Coast of California" and "It Was A Very Good Year" (long before Sinatra) are both superb.
If you are a KT fan, this is a good buy. If not see some of the other collections.
Superb trip down memory lane.......2002-07-29
Here are brought together on CD two memorable albums of one of the hot vocal acts of the early 1960s. The Kingston Trio had established their reputation with such hits as Tom Dooley, Tijuana Jail, M.T.A., and A Worried Man. In the wake of that success, these were albums among those in which they best perfected their talent for collecting together lesser-known gems for discerning listeners.
There are those who say that old vinyl records sound better than CDs, but I for one just can't see where they are coming from. I had heard these albums on their old vinyl versions, but hearing the songs anew on this CD unlocked a new clarity and richness to these performances for me. The vinyl-purist attitude must be at best for a few sticklers for the old records in perfect condition and only the best of equipment for playing them. But for the rest of us even the most modest of CD players can give to musical treasures like these a sound quality exceeding anything we've likely ever heard from vinyl. That makes it a real breakthrough to now have these performances available on CD.
This disc is a window into some of the unique music of the last days of a more innocent era of the early 1960s, before the turbulence of the later 1960s would mean that nothing, including our music, would ever quite be the same again.

Not the same band at all... But a decent album........2007-06-27
Seven Places fans probably liked the evolution between their first two albums. This one will likely lose some fans as guitar is now sharing equal time with piano, and the slant is slightly more poppy, although in fairness it is billed as a "worship album" As such it's pretty lightweight, with some occasional strings, bells and lush vocals. It rocks lightly on the first two cuts, which are admittedly pretty catchy. Track 3 displays a heavy Coldplay influence in the bridge, which is the probably the peak of intensity the CD reaches. From there it's a pretty steady mix of contemporary worship songs until the surprising Rise Up, which could almost be considered a country ballad. The disc wraps up with Psalm 46, which may be the strongest "worship" song on the album, with it's repetitive, vocal round nature. It's a pretty decent disc on it's own merit, but the lead singer's voice is the *only* thing that will be familiar to Seven Places fans, for better or worse...
