Jolene

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
When 28-year-old Dolly Parton summoned the courage to leave The Porter Wagoner Show in 1974, she knew she needed a dynamic solo album to pave the way. The No. 1 single "Jolene" was a fine place to start, with its instantly recognized guitar intro and its minor-key structure that suggested the murder ballads and wronged-woman folk songs of Parton's mountain heritage. But Dolly had bigger, mainstream success in mind, and used her difficult and prolonged parting with Wagoner as inspiration for "I Will Always Love You," a goose-bumpy consolation prize that must have broken Porter's old heart in two. While Parton would have other fine country moments before surrendering to the glitz and glamour of pop pursuit three years later, never again would her gossamer soprano sound as eerily timeless or innocent as it does on the bulk of these tracks. And although "I Will Always Love You" would become a blue-chip stock, with several other incarnations, including a caterwauled hit for Whitney Houston in 1992, Parton's version here--vulnerable yet resolute, and understated compared to future efforts--would represent her at her best, confessing to the tempo of tears. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dolly Album.......2007-05-14

Excellent album! There's the infamous "Jolene", the mega-hit original version of "I Will Always Love You", and the laid-back "Early Morning Breeze". And the bonus tracks are great--"Cracker Jack" is a fun song about her little puppy dog, and Dolly fans will enjoy to hear her sing another version of "Barbara On Your Mind". A classic, must-have album for any Dolly fan!

5 out of 5 stars Best Issue of Jolene".......2007-04-08

Jolene has been released 3 previous times on CD over the years and this release is a standout. It comes with a beautiful repackaging of the original art work, new liner notes from "Rolling Stone" writer Chet Flippo, who is a huge Dolly fan, rarely seen photos, original dates of when the songs were recorded, and the best part 4 unreleased songs that are amazing. Get this rare CD as "Jolene" is the best Dolly Parton album, along with "The Golden Streets of Glory", she has ever put out. The sound quality too is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Mid-70s Parton hitting her country commercial peak.......2007-04-05

By the mid-70s, Parton had emerged from Porter Wagoner's shadow to redefine herself as a powerhouse solo artist. This 1974 release, her first solo LP to crack the top-10, includes the chart-topping title track, as well as the original version of Parton's farewell to Porter Wagoner, "I Will Always Love You." The title track, covered by others (including a superb bluegrass version by Rhonda Vincent), is best heard in this original form.

"I Will Always Love You" is closely associated among film viewers and MTV watchers with Whitney Houston, but Parton's original, aching with conflicting strength, vulnerability, fragility and resolution outstrips both Houston's remake, and Parton's own reworking for the film "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." The song was so strong that all three versions - Houston's and two from Parton - topped the charts!

The album's eight additional tunes, six from Parton, one from Wagoner, and one from Blaise Tosti ("It Must Be You") have tamer themes that those explored on earlier Parton LP's like "Coat of Many Colors," but no less heartfelt. Parton's emancipation from Wagoner would lead her to industry honors (including CMA Female Vocalist of the Year in '75 and '76), Hollywood and crossover success, but the mid-70s found her in full flower of solo aristry as a country singer-songwriter.

Buddha's 1999 reissue of this title was a straight-up 10 track, 25-minute disc. RCA/Legacy expands on the original with a quartet of bonus tracks from the 1974 sessions, bringing the playing time to 37 minutes. It's surprising that a track like "Cracker Jack," a loving song of a childhood pet, was lost in Parton's catalog. Though she "Another Woman's Man" (a reflection of "Jolene") and the tangy day-dreaming "Last Night's Lovin'" remained unreleased, and "Barbara on Your Mind" was reworked on Parton's 1982's "Heartbreak Express" LP. All four are worthwhile additions.

Legacy's new reissue (along with accompanying versions of "My Tennessee Mountain Home" and "Coat of Many Colors") fills out the packaging with newly struck liner notes by Chet Flippo and chart and session information missing from the earlier Buddha version. This is an essential entry in Parton's catalog, and even those who own the earlier CD reissue should consider upgrading for the bonus tracks and new booklet. [©2007 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

4 out of 5 stars The bonuses are better than the album. .......2007-04-05

As with "Coat Of Many Colors" this album has been issued on CD several times already. The album is good, and has some stand out tracks, the title track, "I Will Always Love You" (although I have always preferred the 1982 version), and "Lonely Coming Down". So the draw here are the bonus tracks, all of them are pretty strong. "CrackerJack", is about a girl and her puppy, sort of along the lines of Dolly's other puppy songs "Gyspy Joe & Me" or "Me And Little Andy". "Another Woman's Man" is sort of the same story as Jolene, but told from Jolene's perspective. "Barbara On Your Mind" was later redone for Dolly's 1982 album "Heartbreak Express", the original included here is a better version. Finally "Last Night's Lovin'" simple put is an ode to afterglow!!! When all is said and done, this re-issue is a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars Jolene, Jolene, Joleeeene :).......2007-05-08

Jolene is a classic! What a great song! I love the fact I know the background story :) But then you also have the ever beautiful I will always love you, My Tennessee Mountain home and Letter: where Dolly reads us a letter she wrote when she was young and alone in the big country city. Many good songs, a few HUGE classics and a rare glimpse of how she lived her early days of struggle in music.

i would love to have all dolly parton's album. i so much derive pleasure in her music.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Dolly.......2002-09-25

BMG decided to rerelease some of Dolly's older albums, since they were so short you could fit two albums on one disc, this one is JOLENE/MY TENNESSEE MOUNTAIN HOME. This truly is classic Dolly Parton. MY TENNESSEE MOUNTAIN HOME was released in 1973 and JOLENE in 1974. This album also features a bonus track, which is great to have, "Love, Your So Beautiful Tonight", definately a highlight. Some of the best from the JOLENE album include the title track (forever classic), "Randy", "I Will Always Love You", "Lonely Comin' Down", and more. From MY TENNESSEE MOUNTAIN HOME we have the highlights "Down On Music Row", "Letter", "I Remember", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "Back Home" and more. Overall this is a nice album to own if you want to hear Dolly's roots, and some of her best music before she became really popular. It's a little pricey, but it'll be worth it for the Parton fans such as myself who are willing to pay the extra money to have these songs on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Two classic albums from Dolly's peak years.......2002-07-28

These two albums contain three famous Dolly songs - Jolene, I will always love you and My Tennessee mountain home - but they aren't the reason to buy this. They have been released many times on varios compilations and will no doubt appear on many more. Of the other songs, Early morning breeze was first recorded by Dolly for her Coat of many colors album, Lonely coming down was on My favorite songwriter Porter Wagoner, while In the good old days first appeared on an album with that title in 1968.

The Jolene album has been released in it's entirety, first in Canada and later in America. Among it's wonderful lesser-known songs are When someone wants to leave, which has been covered by bluegrass groups including Wild and Blue.

The Tennessee mountain home album makes it's debut on CD here, and it's my all-time favorite Dolly album. Apart from the opening narrative The letter and the previously recorded In the good old days, all the songs are upbeat and optimistic, just like the title track. All the songs are either about Dolly's childhood, or her early experiences of life in Nashville.

To further add to the pleasure, one track is included from the brilliant but often overlooked Bubbling over album - Love you're so beautiful tonight.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding two-fer of classic Parton LPs.......2001-12-22

BMG's pairing of 1973's "My Tennessee Mountain Home" and 1974's "Jolene" doubles the pleasure of Buddha's earlier straight up reissue of the latter, combining two superb albums from Parton's pre-Hollywood period. In addition to the original 10 tracks of "Jolene" and the 11 tracks of "My Tennessee Mountain Home," BMG's added a bonus track ("Love, You're So Beautiful Tonight"), and stuffed the accompanying booklet with period photos, new liner notes from Brendon Griffin, and (thank you BMG!) credits for the Nashville pickers who made the music.

After finding stardom with Porter Wagoner in Nashville, solo recognition came more grudgingly. The tough times no doubt cast a spell or two of homesickness, resulting in the sweet childhood memories of the 1973 LP, "My Tennessee Mountain Home." Parton sings lovingly of her parents ("I Remember" "Daddy's Working Boots"), home ("Old Black Kettle" "My Tennessee Mountain Home" "Back Home"), and remarkable neighbors ("Dr. Robert F. Thomas"). As an early entry in her career, this album forms something of a bookend with 1998's "Hungry Again," especially the traditional, acoustic backing tracks that would soon give way to crossover stardom.

1974's "Jolene" includes the chart-topping title track, as well as the original version of her farewell to Porter Wagoner, "I Will Always Love You." The former, though covered by others (including a stupendous bluegrass version by Rhonda Vincent), is still best known for Parton's original. The latter, however, is closely associated among radio listeners, film viewers, and MTV watchers, with Whitney Houston. Parton's original, filled with conflicting strength, vulnerability, fragility and resolution decimates Houston's overblown remake. The remaining eight tracks, six from Parton, one from Wagoner, and one from Blaise Tosti ("It Must Be You") all find Parton at the full flower of her first go-round as a pure country singer-songwriter.

The only nits one might pick with this reissue, and they're minor, are the achronological running order (1974's "Jolene" tracks before 1973's "My Tennessee Mountain Home"), and the lack of chart information. Aside from those, the presentation of full albums provides an all too rare opportunity to hear Parton's unedited, early genius as both a songwriter and singer.

5 out of 5 stars Very talented band.......2001-12-24

I bought this album on the basis of the fact I heard
Pensacola on the radio here in charlotte and then I went to a show.
I was blown away by the talent coming out of these guys at a live show. The song "begin 1000" taps into something rare and
much needed in today's music. Chemistry. The songs are liltful,
ripe for the ears and any discerning music critic would have
to search long and hard to find fault from this album.
The songs overall comes from John's ability to sing with just the

right amount of enthusiasm and woefulness at given right intervals. This is story rock at it best. Using the right amount of balance, tamed guitars and quiet melodies they cut through the
the mold of what rock music should be and form their own opinions
on the matter. When you get inside the heads of these men you can
hear the influence of REM with the right amount George Jones and
find yourself lost in a world of sound, structure and purpose.
But if Jolene is taking you there, who wants to leave?

    3 out of 5 stars Jolene Album.......2000-01-24

If you have hearty appetite for catchy cotton-pickin, root 'n' tootin', grainy voiced, country rock that sounds somewhat like Counting Crows on an off day, then delay no longer and submit your credit card details immediately, for you will not be dissapointed. You have the Mr Beard seal of approval, and should you be even slightly unimpressed, then I suggest you write a strong letter to either Mr Ramm or Jon (the other two reviewers) as they gave it more stars than me. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A must own album for any discerning music fan.......1999-08-16

'In The Gloaming' is a true masterpiece, it is rare that you find an album that has both instant appeal and simply gets better every time you listen to it. John Crookes haunting lyrics combined with soaring guitars make for an album that begs to be listened to again and again. The only thing that betters this album is the spectacle of experiencing Jolene live.

5 out of 5 stars a fantastic collection of original tracks........1999-08-02

this is a superb album and fans of hootie should give this a shot, you will not be disappointed. the benchmark of a five star album is one by which you don't skip any tracks, this is just amazing stuff. john crook offers a great grainy voice and he is accompanied by musicians the standard of counting crows talents, if you only by one album this year buy "Lit", if you buy two buy jolene too.

5 out of 5 stars Country Rock at its best.......1999-07-01

Hard Soul Poets has long since left the stage, to be replaced by one of the best Country Rock bands of the '90s. In the past life as HSPs this band blazed a trail through the small bars of the Southeast in the '80s. Now as the new (several years now) incarnation as Jolene, they only get better. Buy this album. It is one of the best you will ever buy. See Jolene live. It is one of the best live shows you will ever see.

Is it just me who finds Jolene's music sounding all the same these days? Don't get me wrong, "Hell's Half Acre" was incredible. I just have found recent albums to have focused more on lushness instead of alt country rock. Maybe Jolene is too talented for their own good. I guess I sum up this album as good but no "Hell's Half Acre".

5 out of 5 stars Take it just because they can.......2000-06-23

Having been dumped by unappreciateive major label Sire, Jolene have self-released this, their third album. I bought my copy from their drummer out of the band's suitcase after their wonderful set at the Borderline last month.

Antic Ocean consists of 14 genuinely original, beautiful songs, imaginatively arranged. All 3 Jolene albums have their own distinct sound and are chock full of high quality material but this takes them up to a new level.

In an earlier era, they would have been feted as one of the best American bands and would have been fending off lucrative offers from the major labels. As it is, their existence and their wonderful music is one of the best kept secrets in music.

It would be impossible for them to keep improving at this rate. The few who appreciate them can only hope they don't become despondent at their lack of recognition and go on to amass a body of work of the same calibre over the next few years.

Jolene capture an awesome feeling when you listen to this album because there is so much to discover ,when you first listen and when you read what some of the tracks are about.....a classic. John's voice is as mature as ever and the rest of the band purvey a distinctive musical input that only Jolene can do so well. Well....whaddya waiting for....GO BUY THE CD!

    4 out of 5 stars Antic Ocean.......2000-04-19

A great album. It seems leaving a major lable has helped them find a good voice.

4 out of 5 stars Another nice one.......2000-04-11

This cd falls somewhere between its predecessors "Hell's Half Acre" and "In the Gloaming." It has some of the lushness of the latter and some of the harder edge of the former. This is one that will require repeated listenings to fully appreciate, I believe, but it will be worth the time. While maybe not the classic "Hell's Half Acre" is, it is a worthy companion. A great band live.

Like its late-'90s spiritual soulmate Rushmore, director Alexander Payne's Election is a sharp, mature comedy of morals and character in high-school drag, pitting obsessive overachiever and student-body candidate Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) against a multifrustrated teacher's (Matthew Broderick) best efforts to stop her. And like Rushmore, its smart, eclectic soundtrack eschews the tyranny of Top Fortydom for an eclectic mix of modern pop and a few suitably ironic chart chestnuts (Donovan's hippy-dippy "Jennifer Juniper"; the Commodores' "Three Times a Lady") that gratifyingly becomes an integral part of the film's ethos rather than a tacked-on marketing clause. Late-'90s pop of the jangly school (Taxiride's raga-rock inflected "Get Set," Hurricane #1's "Rising Sign") mixes with subtle, country nods (Mandy Barnett's "If You'll Be the Teacher," "Drown in Small Cowgirl Boots" by Jolene) and retro touches (The Damnations TX's "Born to Be with You," Patience & Prudence's chirpy faux-'50s "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now") to create a witty and effective musical backdrop to the backstabbing political metaphors. Rolfe Kent's equally piquant orchestral score, dominated by Randy Newman-esque string and woodwind arrangements that are by turns playful and longing, is represented by a concise suite of cues. --Jerry McCulley

The reviewer, "allouciksk" asked what is the song that is the "'tribal' war cry song thingy" you hear in the movie but not on the Election soundtrack. That song is "Navajo Joe" by Ennio Morricone. The movie starred Burt Reynolds. Ennio Morricone is famous as the composer of the spaghetti westerns soundtracks which starred Clint Eastwood. "Navajo Joe" is on many of Morricone's compilations.

Nice selection of songs, but why could they not have included the screaming Spaghetti Western theme by Ennio Morricone, originally from the film 'Navajo Joe', that plays whenever Tracy flips out? As a big Spaghetti Western fan, this amusing use of Morricone's music made Election a great film for me.

2 out of 5 stars What, no score?.......2000-04-13

The score for ELECTION is excellent, and it is bewildering to me that there is so little of it here. Just one track of about 7 minutes. The song choice is reasonable, but the CD is woefully inadequate for those of us who really want to revisit Rolfe Kent's great and strange music from the film. having said that, 7 minutes is better than nothing, and the suite of score is really good.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......1999-05-17

The popular comparison for Jolene's first album is early R.E.M. That might be unfair for Jolene--after all, the Athens boys were never quite this mature-sounding early on, and where Michael Stipe will reach for a falsetto, John Crooke is more likely to settle down into a flat, soulful rumble. Crooke's lyrics are easily distinguished, too, and he definitely has been around the block once or twice: "I could save the world, if given the go-ahead," he sings in "Alongside," before thinking better of it. "Then again, maybe I should save myself instead." But the comparison holds in other ways. Dave Burris does sound distinctly Mills-ian when he contributes backing vocals, and the two bands share the same love for Vic Chesnutt and for layered, subtly energetic melodies. Bill Ladd's consistent pedal steel, and a duet with Kim Richey, only underscore the depth present throughout. It's no surprise that they hail from the same area that spawned both the dBs and Let's Active a couple of revolutions back. --Randy Silver

Pretty good stuff here but I prefer her earlier work on the mini-CD called "Jolene Sings the songs of James Branch Cabell." Most of the tunes were composed by Cabell and Helen "Sindy" Jackson, a native of Hopewell. -- Ray B.

For the former HARDSoul Poets, this album was their first real shot at the national scene. Unfortunately, it failed to grab that attention largely due to mishandling by the label. The album itself is great. The songs create an atmoshpere of "the surreal dirty deep south." "Skyliners" is a kind of protest song against NC's own Jesse Helms. These rockers carry a twang on this album and got lumped into the Americana category because of it. They hate it. Check out "In the Gloaming" or a live show to get a truer taste for their sound. Regardless, this album still kicks and the songs will stick in your head just the same. Kim Richey duets on "I Read What You Wrote Today", John Crooke's take on his own southern romance.

5 out of 5 stars One of her best.......2005-08-23

Dolly Parton released this album in 1974 and it was her first album after she left Porter Wagoner. She pays ode to him on the bittersweet classic ballad "I Will Always Love You" which stands as one of her finest. Much better than the overdramatic Whitney Houston version from 1992. The title track was also a hit, and another Dolly classic. This album was commercially successful, and perhaps the only time in her career she mixed commercial success with artistic integrity. Other highlights include "Lonely Comin Down", "It Must Be You" and "Highlight of my Life". A must have!

4 out of 5 stars Fine example of Parton's earlier work.......2001-12-12

Buddha's 1999 reissue of Parton's 1974 LP is a straight-up presentation of the original ten tracks. Clocking in at under 25 minutes, this may seem like a sampler rather than a full album in today's 78-minute CD world, but what's here is vintage pre-Hollywood Dolly. In addition to the chart-topping title track, the original version of her farewell to Porter Wagoner, "I Will Always Love You," is awe-inspiring. In contrast to Whitney Houston's overblown remake (and Parton's own oversung reworking), the original is a perfect record, filled with strength, vulnerability, fragility and resolution that culminate in heartbreak all around.

The remaining eight tracks, six from Parton, one from Wagoner, and one from Blaise Tosti ("It Must Be You") are a bit tamer than the topics explored on "Coat of Many Colors" (Buddha's other 1999 reissue), but no less heartfelt. Parton's emancipation from Wagoner would eventually lead her to Hollywood and crossover success, but in the mid-70s she was at the full flower of her first go-round as a pure country singer-songwriter.

Buddha's reissue was an essential buy upon its arrival in 1999, and one for which Parton fans should be grateful. At this point, however, BMG's 2001 pairing of this title with 1975's "My Tennessee Mountain Home" (which is otherwise unavailable on CD) offers twice the music (plus a bonus track) for a few dollars more.

        5 out of 5 stars Her Roots.......2001-03-25

Jolene is where Dolly's roots are, it was that era where some of her most memorable music came from, this cd being no exception whatsoever. This is pure gold. There are classics on this cd such as Jolene, the original version of I Will ALways Love You, Lonely Comin Down, and other memorable songs lik River of Happiness, Early Morning Breeze, and It Must Be You. All the songs are winners. This is a must have, and a great place for new fans of Dolly to start their collection. Go out and get it if you already havent!

5 out of 5 stars BEST DOLLY ALBUM!!!.......2000-08-14

I LIKE THIS ALBUM THE MOST, BOASTING HER EARLY WORK. BESIDES "JOLENE". I'M VERY FOND OF "LIVING ON MEMORIES OF YOU" WHICH REMINDS ME OF A SONG YOU MIGHT HEAR IN A SALOON, BACK IN THE OLD WEST. I ALSO LOVE "HIGHLIGHT OF MY LIFE", "LONELY COMIN' DOWN"( WHICH IS VERY HEARTFELT)AND "IT MUST BE YOU", NOT TO MENTION THE LEGENDARY "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU". THIS IS THE ONLY ALBUM I CAN SAY, BESIDES THE COMPILATIONS OF BEST HITS I HAVE, THAT I LIKE EVERY SONG ON DEEPLY. WORTH EVERY PENNY IF YOU LIKE DOLLY'S EARLY WORK.
