There was never anything fancy about these New York hardcore pioneers, just the aural equivalent of a swift kick to the nether regions followed by a brass-knuckled rap on the noggin. Then again, that's probably what made Roger Miret & Co. so popular with the testosterone-fueled adolescents that related to the band's might-makes-right approach. The band drew some criticism for its avowedly right-wing political stance--"Shoot His Load" praised subway gunman Bernhard Goetz, while "Public Assistance" knocked those who accepted it--but repeated exposure reveals them to be total misanthropes, rather than antagonists of any specific group. If a feel-good album is what you're looking for, steer clear. But those hankering for a shot of no-frills punk-metal with a side of malice will certainly feel sated. --David SpragueCustomer Reviews:
NYHC Classic!!!.......2006-10-07
Plain and simple. Anyone to diss is just a plain softee suburb average Joe that knows nothin bout real hardcore!!! oi oi oi This is straight up from the streets for the streets and obviously anyone who hates this just isn't hardcore. They need to go listen to their Lincoln Park or whatever joke they call hardcore.
Hardcore at its best.......2005-09-08
D.K. Malone, you are Definitely WRONG!.......2005-06-06
(EDIT: As much as I like BLACK FLAG, Ginn's playong was sloppy as best. Whether this was intentional or not we'll never know, bu the fact is that he WAS sloppy! Even Johnny Ramone played with much more technique than Gregg Ginn! Nuff said.),
Dr. Know, Lyle Preslar, Greg Hetson, Doyle, East Bay Ray...et al...none of these guitarists were paricularly outstanding, but they SERVED a purpose and that purpose was to make over the top guitar mayhem for their respective punk bands. So, to review a "PUNK" albums on the merits of a guitar players' particular sound is TOTALLY out of the question, because Stigma's guitar playing on "VICTIM IN PAIN" will not distract you from the sheer pleasure of listening to a seminal punk album. "VICTIM IN PAIN" is raw, fast (sometimes, EXTREMELY fast!!!) and real. "United & Strong", "Power", "Your Mistake" and the thrashing title track make the 2nd half of this CD a MUST HAVE for any HARDCORE PUNK fan. Now, in 1986 AGNOSTIC FRONT released "Cause For Alarm". Cries of "sell out" and "metal posers" where heard abundantly when the album was released (through COMBAT records, a decidedly METAL label, which made matters only worse!). Truth is, CFA is a GREAT album with slight "metal" overtones (but hardcore bands always waltzed the line between punk and metal because of their common musical aggression). The production improved dramatically over the 1st album: crunchy-thrash-metal like guitars, double bass drums and controversial lyrics (some penned by CARNIVORE main man Pete Steele). "Eliminator", "Time Will Come" and the controversial "Public Assistance" are stand out tracks. The sound on this record helped defined the "CROSSOVER" sub-genre: the fusion of punk and metal played at thrash metal/hardcore punk speeds.
If there is anything to complain about is the CD itself. The packaging is BEYOND terrible and does NOT do justice to these two seminal hardcore releases. Like CIRCLE JERKS' "Group Sex" (which is about 15 minutes long and got a full CD release), "Victim In Pain" should have been released separately (and with ORIGINAL cover!). Same goes for CAUSE FOR ALARM. Whoever though of releasing this CD the way it is should be SHOT in the head. Unfortunately, it's the only way you can get your hands on these 2 punk masterpieces!
Roger Miret is kind of short in real life!.......2005-06-04
Roger Miret's voice on "Cause for Alarm" sounds...different. The worst part is when he says "It's your mistake" on "Your Mistake". But you know what, I actually like his singing on the record, even if occasionally he sounds gayer than Liberace. The only draw back from the record is that Stigma and Miret like hired other musicians to write and record much of the music. In fact, the guy from Type O Negative co-wrote some tracks.
"Victim in Pain" was AF's only second hardcore punk record (United Blood EP was the first). It was released in 1984. This is New York Hardcore. The songs are short, fast, and rough. It's mercyfully free of tough guy B.S. that plagues NYHC (Biohazard comes to mind). Stigma actually plays his guitar on this record and Miret sounds his best. I respectively disagree with the one reviewer who basically said that this sounds like generic hardcore. Maybe it sounds bland to some because the style has been copied so much ever since 1984. But I think it sounds f@@@ing amazing. The ONLY drawback is that "Victim in Pain" is only like 20 minutes long. It would have been nice if they rerecored stuff from "United Blood".

Innovative, But Not Classic.......2005-06-04
Cause for Alarm is an ok album, but it's not great. It's pretty much your standard metalcore stuff, but the music just isn't as powerful as it could be. There are a couple of good songs here and there, but for the most part, just isn't that great. It does however, include "Eliminator", my favorite AF song ever.
Victim in Pain is better, but still not classic. The songs have more of a punk edge than "Cause for Alarm", and it is enjoyable, just not for that long. This is one of those albums where you'll hear it, obsess about for a while, and then realize it's just ok, not great.
I would not reccomend this to all punk fans. Fans of exclusively '77 punk or pop- punk will not like this. However, if you are interested in learning about the roots of New York Hardcore (NYHC), or are a fan of AF, Black Flag, or any other hardcore punk band, then you will enjoy this.

Album Description
With "When The Pain Dies Down - Live In Paris", Chris Stills' ambition was to make the connection between two countries close to his heart. Two countries mutually opposed yet suprisingly close at times. France and the US have found their perfect moderator. When your parent's names are Stephen Stills (of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young fame) and best-selling French chanteuse Veronique Sanson, you are left with no choice; either you follow in your footsteps, or you go in the complete opposite direction. Luckily, Chris Stills discovered his true means of expression and has unleashed them in song. "When The Pain Dies Down - Live In Paris" features Stills' immaculate sense of melody and earth shattering beautiful voice. Six songs were recorded live at Studio Du Palais in Paris by Mitch Oliver and features a studio version of the cleverly titled "Fanny" which is a French translation of The Band classic hit "The Weight". The EP features three tracks sung completely in French. Already featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, Chris Still is ready for the world.Customer Reviews:
This guy has all the chops.......2006-09-07
As for this terrific EP, this is such a great record that I really wish Chris had turned out a complete live set. It's just brilliant start to finish. Chris has all of his parents' musical chops and their vocal power, especially his father's when dad was in his prime. Bi-lingual, he turns in one of the very best renditions of a Band tune you'll ever hear. You'll figure it out. In so doing, he is perhaps closer to the roots of what the Band stood for than even the Band's renditions of this timeless song.
So, for $9, pick this up. The return on the investment will delight you. A superb, superb CD. Would that Lennon's kids had this kind of talent.

Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02
This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.
Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.
The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.
more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20
I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.
I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.
At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.
The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.
delightful art songs.......2002-01-02
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.
carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.
this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.
anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.
one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

Like most R&B albums of the early 1960s, Otis Redding's 1964 debut was a haphazard mixture of the artist's contemporary hits ("These Arms of Mine," "Pain in My Heart"), B-sides ("Something Is Worrying Me," "Hey Hey Baby"), and covers of popular hits of the day ("You Send Me," "Stand by Me"). Stylistically, Redding was still trying to find his feet; though he obviously had the voice and ability to pull off tender ballads like the title track, he hadn't yet given up on trying to scream like Little Richard ("Lucille"). Uneven as they may be, the tracks on Pain in My Heart get over on the sheer soulfulness of Redding's singing. Worth the price of admission alone is the underrated "Security," which was the first in a string of great uptempo Redding originals. --Dan EpsteinCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
The idealistic appeal of "fighting the good fight" against the fascist troops of General Francisco Franco as he warred against Spain's democratically elected government drew more than 45,000 volunteer soldiers from over 50 countries during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). This influx created a canon of war-related songs sung by the freedom fighters and revived during the American folk boom of the Fifties.SPAIN IN MY HEART presents new recordings of vintage and recent songs inspired by the conflict and performed by an international roster of musicians. The United States is represented by folk's activist icon, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, master instrumentalist/vocalist John McCutcheon, bluegrass singer/fiddler Laurie Lewis, East L.A.'s Quetzal, multicultural singer/songwriter/actress Michele Greene, and Joel and Jamaica Rafael of the Joel Rafael Band. From Mexico and Nicaragua come vocalist Lila Downs and Duo Guardabarranco, respectively. The Irish volunteers are solo artist Aoife Clancy, formerly of Cherish the Ladies, and Shay Black of The Black Family. Spain itself is represented by two of its leading contemporary singers, Eliseo Parra and Uxía.
The songs here, acoustic-based and many in Spanish, form a surprisingly delicate mosaic. Rather than emulating the strident chaos of battle, the CD conveys more subtle aspects of the conflict - yearning for simpler times ("Asturias," "En La Plaza De Mi Pueblo"); longing for distant loved ones ("The Bantry Girls' Lament"); the equal significance of life, love and death ("Llegó Con Tres Heridas"). The war and the bravery of the anti-fascist forces are addressed in such songs as "Jarama Valley," "El Quinto Regimiento," "Taste of Ashes," and "The Abraham Lincoln Brigade."
No matter in what language the songs are performed, the bravery, pain and loss felt by soldiers and civilians alike are rendered with a conviction and feeling that transcends words and forges an aching link with the listener.
Customer Reviews:

The best of the 4 I recently bought.......2005-04-27
I particularly like the song whose title is translated on this page as 'Be sure to drink in moderation' - I don't know enough contemporary Dutch to know if learning to sing this as recorded on this CD would be comprehensible to native speakers of Dutch today, but I certainly hope so, because it would make a terrific ice breaker at parties in Holland.
As for the music, it's hard to imagine that a gaggle of trained geese would sound as good as these Crumhorns. This album really rocks.
