5 out of 5 stars Live and learn. .......2007-03-19

Since CD's weren't commercially available in 1972 except as a Certificate of Deposit, and Amazon generally posts the release date and track listing of the album for sale, I'd have to say, "tough luck" to the reviewers who didn't review their purchase prior to ordering. Unfortunately it's a 'read the fine print' world we live in now, and no I'm not an attorney ;) Since I was only just begun (born) in '72, I don't have old memories of her work. I'm generally not even a fan of country music. If anyone out there has ever been to a drag show, "The Happiest Girl..." has just enough camp and spirit, as well as the Dolly Parton-esque mountain music thing for one of those crazy queens to really make a statement. And nobody I have ever seen could pull that off as well as Lucinda Holiday, hamburgers and all!!! Who would have ever known I'd discover this little slice of history and widely unknown gem 30 years later? Buy this album and, above all, be sure to make it a Skip-a-dee - doo-dah - day.

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE ORIGINAL!.......2003-12-10

As much as I love the music of Donna Fargo, this is *NOT* the original "Happiest Girl in The Whole USA" album that was originally released in 1972 on DOT records. It's a good thing the track listing was posted here, otherwise I might have been fooled into thinking I was purchasing the original version. Fortunately, I still have my old vinyl copy, though after 30+ years, it's getting pretty tired. I don't understand this concept of "remaking" old albums and re-issuing them on CD. I feel this is deliberate deception on the part of the label to mislead the public. This is becoming quite a routine for some reason. Thankfully, those of us who remember our old 8-tracks and LP records aren't easily fooled. The ORIGINAL track listing for "Happiest Girl in The Whole USA" is as follows:

1. The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA
2. Manhattan Kansas
3. The Awareness of Nothing
4. Funny Face
5. A Little Somethin'(To Hang On To)
6. Daddy Dumplin
7. How Close You Came To Being Gone
8. Society's Got Us
9. It Would Have Been Just Perfect
10 Johnny B Goode.

That's the way I remember it folks, and that's the way it should have been reissued. I'm sorry, but either release the album in its entirety without butchering it up or omitting songs, or just don't even bother. I'm sick and tired of wasting time and money on deceptive and sly business practices on the part of the music industry, and until such time as it cleans up its act, I'll continue to treasure my old records and tapes.

2 out of 5 stars Another misleading title.......2002-07-23

This is NOT Donna Fargo's 1972 album, "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA". Rather, this is a compilation album with several of her more popular songs. If you want a greatest hits collection, there are better ones available. If you want the original album, as I did, you're out of luck, at least for now. Not a single one of her original albums are available. If you want to know what songs were on the original "Happiest" album, that information is available on her web site. The review guidelines do not allow me to post the url, but it should be pretty easy for you to guess.

This has become a fairly common marketing trick. Labels will release compilation albums, but give them the title of an original studio album, leading fans to purchase the wrong product. You have to be very careful to not be deceived by this tactic. Usually I am, but this time I got burned. Hopefully writing this will keep this from happening to some of you. A few of my other reviews are of similar deceptive albums.

5 out of 5 stars It makes me realize how happy I am to have loved my husband........1999-06-12

I have shared this song with many and they all become "hooked" on it. It came out at a time in my life (I was pregnant), and so in love with my husband. (After 24 "happy" years he passed away.) It was my song and I've been singing it for twenty five years. My niece (17) recently fell in love with it and is playing it for her friends. The lyrics still apply today. I highly recommend it. I need a CD now, my tapes are old.

5 out of 5 stars Most overlooked !.......2004-09-20

Donna Fargo has to be the most overlooked female country singer in the business. Being the first lady in country music to have million selling singles and being one of the few female artist of her time to write most of her songs. She has yet to get the respect that she deserves. This cd is very good but serves only a small part of her catalog. Her fans are still waiting for a complete collection!
Every time CMT has the best 100 song specials i'm amazed there's no Donna songs. Hello!

5 out of 5 stars Authentic and moving.......2003-11-07

I am not a connoiseur of country music and most of the bland crossover stuff leaves me cold. But occassionally a unique singer comes along with a song or two that really grabs me because of the authenticity and genuine emotion in the music.

Donna Fargo is such a singer and a gifted composer who enriched the pop charts in the early seventies with her catchy songs The Happiest Girl In The Whole USA and Funny Face. Yes, these songs are about the domestic bliss of everyday people but somehow they're special and unique, able to soften even the most cynical of hearts with their exuberance and engaging melodies. In addition, Fargo's voice and/or accent is quite charming, with just a hint of a lisp, which makes her style even more appealing.

Besides the aforementioned hits, I also love You Were Always There, Su;perman, US of A and Whatever I Say. The other tracks aren't quite in the same league but still very enjoyable. This is country music at its best; nothing beats a brilliant song performed with genuine feeling.

4 out of 5 stars Short collection of a great artist's best hits.......2003-03-04

After a few false starts on small labels, Donna Fargo arrived on the country charts in 1972 and went straight to the top. She combined the relentless exhuberance of Dolly Parton, the quiver of Tammy Wynette, and especially, the vocal sound of Loretta Lynn. Unlike those country queens, she was also able to cross over to the pop top 10 as well with her first two hits "Happiest Girl In The Whole USA" and "Funny Face." The major pop success was short-lived, but Fargo would become a major fixture on the country charts throughout the '70s. This 11 track set covers Fargo's best work on the ABC/Dot label: 1972-1976 (Varese Sarabonde had an eighteen track collection of this period but it is now out of print).

The ABC/Dot singles here, in chronological order, were the biggest hits. After her initial pair of perky mega-hit singles, Fargo wisely added a little sarcasm with her follow-up "Superman." She also effectively merged country and gospel with "You Can't Be A Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine)". "U.S. of A." provided a patriotic slant, but her predominant theme was domestic bliss. Fargo also, impressively, wrote most of her hits.

Fargo's late '70s Warner Brothers hits remain out of print. While those singles aren't as strong as what is found here, they have their moments. Hopefully, Warner Brothers (or Rhino) will someday put out a retrospective of those follow-up hits.

5 out of 5 stars Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A........2002-05-08

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful 1970s country.......2005-01-30

The Happiest Girl must be one of the most uplifting love songs ever, a joyful celebration of domestic bliss. It reached number 11 on the pop charts, whilst Funny Face is an equally catchy love song that reached number 5.

None of the other tracks quite match up to these two gems, although they are mostly memorable and tuneful. Superman is an uptempo number and was a country number one like the two aforementioned hits; it reached number 41 on the pop charts. You Were Always There is a sad and gentle ballad, an ode from a child to a loving parent.

Little Girl Gone is about growing up with its excitement and disillusion, a fast paced story song with a catchy tune. I'll Try A Little Bit Harder is a typical slow country song about working to save a love that is in danger of dying, while there is a gospel undertone in the inspiring and uplifting You Can't Be A Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine), which was also a country number one.

Overall, this is a most enjoyable collection of authentic country songs from the 1970s: melodic and moving music that has stood the test of time very well. Most of these songs made the country top 10 and several reached respectable positions on the pop charts too.

5 out of 5 stars Vera Roman - Big Spring, Tx.......2005-01-02

I have listened to Donna Fargo since I was 16 years old. I think she rates right at the top with Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and all the other country women. I had her 8 track tape I believe was called Happiest Girl in the Whole USA and it had Daddy Dumplin, Manhatten Kansas, Johnny Be Good and several others, and she was sitting under a tree, barefoot in jeans a I would really like to find all those songs again but on a CD. I Think she has a wonderfull voice and love to hear her sing.

5 out of 5 stars An under rated seventies country queen.......2003-05-25

Note that this review (like all the others) is listed under Best of (Curb) as well as Best of (MCA) They are very different compliations so I will discuss both.

Donna took some time to make a breakthrough as a singer or songwriter, during which time she worked as a schoolteacher. After she wrote and recorded Happiest girl in the whole USA, things happened very quickly. That song became a top ten American pop hit as well as a country number one. The follow-up, Funny face, did likewise. That was the end of Donna's pop hits, but she had many more country hits during the seventies.

Superman, You were always there and You can't be a beacon if your light don't shine all became country number one hits, while Little girl gone, I'll try a little bit harder, U S of A, It do feel good and Don't be angry provided Donna with further top ten country hits.

Donna's songs were mostly happy and upbeat, but she could do the weepies too - listen to her rendition of Manhattan Kansas (one of the few songs on these compilations that she didn't write). Perhaps the most famous song here is Heartbreak hotel. Donna's cover of this Elvis classic does not match the original, but I enjoy it, although I am aware that some people can't stand this version. You must make up your own mind.

She switched record labels (to Warner) in 1976 and her later recordings are on the Curb compilation (which also includes Funny face and Happiest girl in the whole USA from earlier), with the exception of a gospel album recorded for MCA in 1981, represented on the MCA compilation by Say I do.

Her Warner music is also excellent. I particulary like Somebody special, but Shame on me and Ragamuffin man are among the other highlights.

Donna has never been well represented on CD, but she had a more distinctive style and voice than most. The lady with the chuckle in her voice deserves better.

1 out of 5 stars Bad Re-recordings Not The Original Versions.......2005-06-19

The two big hits here, Happiest Girl in the USA and Funny Face, are atrocious re-recordings. I don't know if that is true of all the songs, but I bet they are not the originals either. Some of the other songs on the CD like Do I Love You and That Was Yesterday are ones that I wanted to add to my collection.
I wish the Consumers Bureau or somebody could stop these rip-offs.

Back in the 1970s Donna Fargo had a voice that could light up the room and a stage presence that marked her as someone very special in the competitive field of country music to anyone who saw her perform. Now Collectables Records (a premiere producer of "time lost classics" in American music noted for the breadth, diversity, and sheer size of their music catalog) offers Fargo Country in which the talents of Donna Fargo are once again made available to a whole new generation of country music fans -- and an absolutely wonderful nostalgic treat for those who first knew her work almost thirty years ago. The pieces showcased in Fargo Country include: Mockingbird Hill (2:58); Do I Love You (Yes In Every Way (3:07); I Want To Learn A Love Song (3:32); Second Choice (2:29); Sing Me (2:53); The Cricket Song (2:38); A Couple More Years (3:53); Hey, Mister Music Man (2:10); That Was Yesterday (3:17); and Gifts Of Life (2:53).

5 out of 5 stars Donna in peak form.......2005-05-16

With an eye-catching (but wholesome) picture of Donna on the cover and a brilliant set of songs, this album proved very successful with American country fans when originally released.

Two major country hits (That was yesterday, Do I love you) showed that Donna was in peak form. The album also includes Donna's wonderful covers of A couple more years (Dr Hook) and Mockingbird Hill, which was a huge American hit in 1951 for both Patti Page and the duo of Les Paul and Mary Ford, it was later a top ten UK hit for the Migil 5 in the sixties. Other great songs include I want to learn a love song, Cricket song and Gifts of life.

This is one of Donna's finest albums and it's great to see it available on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Donna Fargo does it with "style"!.......2005-04-28

I am amazed each time I listen to this cd. Donna Fargo does each song with style. All country music fans need to give a listen to this awesome masterpiece. My favorites are: "Sing Me", "I Want To Learn a Love Song", "That Was Yesterday", "Gifts of Life", and "Do I Love You". I play this cd over and over. My teen age children have found Donna's sound to be so real and current even though this was released in 1977. I urge everyone who loves country music to give a listen to this great piece and you will be totally delighted!!

What a pleasure it is to finally have these gems on CD. These 2 cd showcase Donna's versatility. You have a little Country, some Pop and Gospel. "Just for you" is my all time favorite of Donna's cd's. These song sound as fresh today as they did back in the 70's. All of Donna's fans should add this one to your collection!
