Brand New Me

You can't say John Michael Montgomery is an American original, but he's certainly an American. Brand New Me is as masculine, wholesome, and conventional as a pickup commercial. His perspective comes through loud and clear on one of this 10-song set's pivotal numbers, "Thanks for the G Chord": "Thanks for the G chord / Teaching me about the good Lord / Giving me that old Ford/When I turned 16." Holding down the middle ground between honky-tonk traditionalism and unapologetic country-pop, Montgomery matches gestures toward country's roots (a little mandolin here, some sweeping steel there) with the full-bodied drumming and cranked guitar that marks many a modern Nashville production. And of course, no one can wring a ballad dry like Montgomery can. There's nothing inspired or original going on here; indeed, the brand new John Michael sounds mighty familiar. --Steve Stolder

Brand New have specialized in pain ever since the pop-punk emo-rage of their 2001 debut release Your Favorite Weapon. But they've outdone themselves on The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. If the songs on Weapon were paper cuts, the ones here are gaping chainsaw wounds, full of seismic, howling agony. The moody rumbles of 2003's Deja Entendu were pointing here, but this is something else, with Mogwai-level dynamic range and tracks that careen from introspection to fury and back again. Lyrically, lead singer Jesse Lacey's words remain excruciating and harrowing things, but that's nothing new. It's the music propping them up which gives this effort such depth and punch. "Degausser" starts so innocently, then uses a bridge augmented with a bitter children's chorus straight out of The Wall as a lead in to Lacey's bitter refrain of "I'll never say anything right." Then there's the nearly 8-minute "Limousine (MS Rebridge)," epic, and epically sad, constantly threatening to descend into pure cacophony (and eventually succeeding). Repeated listens will tune your ear to the band's still-intact pop sense (especially on "Not the Sun" and "The Archers Bows Have Broken"), which keeps the record lively and unpredictable, and away from becoming a depressing, head-in-the-oven mope. Brand New went through three years of intense recording sessions to make it happen, but it was worth the effort. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Brand New Soul.......2007-07-18

There are few words that can capture the beauty of this album: words like transcendent, grand, and magnificent only begin to scratch the surface of what can be said about this album. I will not bore you with petty details of how this album "changed my life" or "made me a better person" - I will simply let you know that this album, is worth at least one listen. Give it one chance, and if you don't like it, that's fine. But if you do like it, chances are, you will come to love it. My favorites include "Jesus", "Millstone", "Limosuine (MS Rebridge)", and "You Won't Know". This album is a stirring orchestral treat for the ears and soul. Please experience this for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-07-04

This album takes off in a different direction from Deja Entandu, Its full of emotion and power like their last album but with more screaming. An awesome album, Brand New continues to refine their sound and have come a long way from Your Favorite Weapon

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever.......2007-05-28

I've been a Brand New fan for a long time, and this album has only increased my love for such an innovative, talented band. Many bands change their styles to please more people to become more famous, but Brand New has not done this. Instead, they continue to grow in their own style and grow in popularity anyway. This album includes Jesse's thought-provoking lyrics, awesome guitar parts, and meaningful melodies and harmonies fans have come to expect. This is the best album I have ever heard, and I cannot stop listening to it. They have grown so much, especially in diversity of their songs. This album is perfect in every way! BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album I Never Heard in 2006!.......2007-05-16

The year 2006 had come to a close and I had not heard this album. Usually at the end of every year I compile a list of the Top20 albums I've heard in the year. I missed one and I cannot forgive myself! This albums continues through and through with the main theme, "good vs. evil" and it works on almost every track. It is one of the albums I just can't put too far away from my cdplayer. I've loaded up some songs on my iPod, including the 2007 single, "Jesus Christ". "Brand New" was problably the most under-rated artiste of 2006.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite bands.......2007-05-09

I have both of their best albums and I listen to them both front to back weekly, they are both always found in my disc-changer in my truck. Track 3 is my favorite on this Album.

5 out of 5 stars My son's favorite by far!.......2007-04-26

I was fortunate enough to be introduced to this album while working at a daycare. My fellow employees would laugh (lovingly) at me while I belted out the choruses. Their favorite or course was hearing me sing, "I'm a nut, I'm a nut, I'm a nut, that's me!" (from The Acorn Song) :o)
I loved hearing this play in the background during playtime.

Naturally when my first child was born I knew we HAD to have this album. We keep it in the car. Even at a very young age I could tell that he liked it. Heather Forest's voice seems to have a wonderful affect on children. Case and point: when my son would be crying in the car, I would put on this music and he would STOP! Amazing!! He will be 3 years old in a couple weeks and it STILLS has that affect on him. Being older he doesn't CRY as much in the car anymore, but it's the TEMPER TANTRUMS that the music instantly puts an end to now. Don't know what we'd do without this album. Thank you Heather Forest!!

One last thing- one of the best things about this album has been my son learning the words and singing along. Too too too cute and he just LOVES it ! ! ! He looks so proud of himself :o)
He picks this album over all the other music we have in the car...even The Wiggles!! And if you are a parent to a toddler you might just know how amazing that is :o)

Trust us and buy it :o)

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Excellent Story Times.......2005-06-03

Perfect for Pre-K to Grade 4 story hour. Kids pick up the chorus instantaneously. Three Billy Goats, Little Red Hen, Stone Soup are my cornerstones. I suggest reading aloud first. Then play the song and exhibit the appropriate pages. I use Janet Stevens' Three Billy Goats Gruff, Paul Galdone's Little Red Hen and Heather Forest's Stone Soup. Visit her website at www.storyarts.com for more ideas. I took a workshop with her. She's terrific!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun music for children and their adults.......2004-01-04

We have had this recording on audio cassette for 15 or so years. My 18 year old son and my 14 year old daughter both remember it fondly as do my husband and I. At dinner tonight, we were singing "The Acorn Song" and it made me wonder if it was available on CD. I'm glad to see it is still available to families. The songs are both entertaining and beautifully performed. Although many are humorous, most are based on classic stories or fables so they aren't simply silly. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Full price was worth the song THAT LITTLE GIRL but,.......2001-11-25

I believe that I am a pretty good judge of music and I appreciate all types. But I was really diappointed when I listened to the full CD. If this represents his BRAND NEW ME then Michael needs to return to his former self. I have yet to listen to anything else than THE LITTLE GIRL track. The rest of the CD had no impact on me. Sorry but, this CD really made me think about all the junk we have to pay for to get to the one most inspiring song. I wish artists would consider what they are putting out to the public, even if they know that one song can carry the album.

5 out of 5 stars A great one from John Michael.......2001-08-09

John Michael Montgomery has always been a good ballad singer, and his most recent record, Brand New Me, has plenty of fine slow songs. His #1 hit "The Little Girl" is the highlight here. The song starts out as a pretty depressing song, with the girl living with her neglectful, substance-abusing parents("Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs/Never wanted to play or give kisses and hugs"). However, after the girl loses her parents in a murder-suicide(where her dad got home drunk, "used a gun on her mom and then took his life"), she gets adopted and goes to her new home. When she goes to Sunday school, the girl sees the picture of Jesus on the cross and realizes that He had rescued her from her abusive situation. I probably gave away too much of the plot here, but I will say that with its great lyrics and powerful message, I think "The Little Girl" ranks right up there with "I Swear", "I Can Love You Like That", and "I Miss You A Little" as one of the best ballads John Michael has ever done. He has plenty of other good ballads here, among them the lost-love songs "Bus To Birmingham" and "That's Not Her Picture", the positive songs "Even Then" and "Real Love", and the moving song "Thanks For The G-Chord"(which John Michael says he picked with his father in mind). Great ballads, all of them.

However, John Michael also knows how to have fun in his songs, as he's proven already in his career with his upbeat hits "Be My Baby Tonight", "Sold" and "Cowboy Love". On Brand New Me, the songs "That's What I Like About You", "Weekend Superstar", "I Love It All", and the title track "Brand New Me" are all toe-tapping, uptempo songs, just the kind of songs someone would want to play to get a party going. All in all, I think this record is one you will really want to listen to. John Michael's made a career out of making great records, and from him, Brand New Me is still another strong one.

      5 out of 5 stars great album.......2001-07-11

It is a shame that Atlantic records folded. This is the best JMM album yet, and the public is not going to get to hear it. "Even Then" is the best wedding song since "I Can Love You Like That", and radio is not playing it. There are many other great cuts that radio will probably not end up playing either. The title track is the best uptempo song since "Sold". Every song on the album is worth listening to. Buy it!!!

Taking the artist to Philadelphia for the follow-up to Dusty in Memphis was an apt musical choice; Philly kings Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and Thom Bell, all involved in A Brand New Me, were perfecting a pop-soul fusion closely related to that album's breakthroughs. While the material here isn't quite up to Memphis's standard, it's good enough to allow Dusty's softer side, and the lush arrangements meld for a small masterpiece. Among the bonus tracks is the overdubbed 45-rpm version of the terrific Memphis outtake "What Do You Do When Love Dies." --Rickey Wright

      5 out of 5 stars Dusty Revisited.......2005-10-26

It had been a long, long time since this writer last listened to this album. While attempting to remix and catalogue my record collection, I found myself knee-deep in vinyl. "Brand New Me" just happened to jump out at me as if it were begging for a relisten. And, relisten I did - over and over again.

Poor Dust - to have every other work she did compared with the masterpiece for the ages, "Dusty In Memphis", helped to kill her recording career for at least 17 years. It was like telling Michelangelo "that Pieta is nice but it's no David".

In many ways, "Brand New Me" is a much more "soulful" offering than "Dusty In Memphis" - just listen to "I Believe In You"; and, tell me Dust couldn't "get down". The Gamble-Huff touch makes a few more songs on this album outdistance several songs on "Dusty In Memphis" - "Joe"; "I Wanna Be A Free Girl"; and "Never Love Again" certainly dwarf the inane "Windmill Of Your Mind" from "Dusty In...". The lyrics by the late Linda Creed give the whole production a very nice woman's emotional perspective.

"Let's Get Together Soon" was later released as "Hope That We Can Get Together Soon" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. It's a nice track made interesting by the sound of Dusty clearning her throat at about 1:50 into it - go figure.

All in all, "Brand New Me" would have to qualify as Dusty's second best album - not too shabby for a singer of her calibre. There was only one Dusty Springfield and we lost her way too soon. Thankfully, she left us with her gift of music.

      5 out of 5 stars Dusty's Second Best Album.......2005-09-30

The first few bars of this CD are great. Some quick guitar work lifts off the first up-tempo track, "Lost." The first song makes for an excellent start. But after listening to the entire album (released in 1970) for the first time, I thought, "this is good, but it's no 'Dusty in Memphis.'" It takes time, perhaps, to appreciate "Brand New Me's" nuances. It isn't quite as impressive as the superb "Dusty in Memphis." Yet, "Brand New Me" is still a great record; I would say it is Dusty's second best album. In 1969-70, she was at her peak. Although her vocals were always top-notch, sometimes her arrangements weren't worthy of her soulful voice. Almost all of the songs here were written by one composer, Kenneth Gamble. Because of that, the album is very consistent from an arrangement point of view. Gamble's compositions certainly accommodate Dusty's talents. Strings, horns, and keyboards abound, but the album is never overstuffed in a Phil Spector sort of way, and approaches (though recorded in Philadelphia) the heights that the Memphis Sound achieved on "Dusty in Memphis." None of the tracks here are weak. And the bonus tracks, although I had heard some of them on the extended "Dusty in Memphis" CD, are very good. Any Dusty fan should own this album, which, unfortunately, is out of print. I was able to get this one for about ten bucks at Dr. Wax in Southside Chicago. I'm glad I made the purchase. I've listened to "Brand New Me" dozens of times since I bought it.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Soul LP.......2004-08-04

This is one of Dusty's Best Lp's! Produced by Gamble & Huff, with some arrangements by the incredible Thom Bell made this Lp a winner!!! It's a shame this lp didn't do well because it showcases Dusty at her most soulful yet tender, i love her voice on this record, as much i love the 'Dusty In Memphis' lp, i think on this one she is more soulful....
      Highlights? the whole cd!!.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Springfield.......2004-03-07

Dusty Springfield combined with early Gamble and Huff. Really demonstrates the soul side of Dusty. A worthy acquisition at any cost!

      5 out of 5 stars one of dusty's best.......2003-05-24

without comparing every other dusty album to "dusty in memphis", this is a great, consistent album, and dusty's voice sounds as good as ever. her timing and technique here is impeccable. there is a consistent sound to all the songs, which is the sound of catchy, mid-tempo but tastefully arranged and performed pop. "lost" is a great opener, and for me the highlight is the pleading "joe". i also like "bad case of the blues" and "let me get in your way". hell, i like all of them. they're all so hip for its time. no really big ballady things here, just dusty at her beautifully understated, tasteful best. the bonus tracks are great too. i like upbeat stuff, so i really like "Haunted". "i'll be faithful" is also in the ABC/Dunhill collection, and the un-overdubbed "what do you do when love dies" is in the remastered "memphis." anyway, this is a great album.

JT melts the mic on a number of eclectic ballads and mid-tempos all well complimented by a spicy co-production effort from Marcus Quantanilla. A very vocally & musically dynamic record to round out any JT Taylor/Kool & The Gang collection...

4 out of 5 stars Smooth solo effort.......2000-06-13

How JT Taylor remains such a unappreciated solo artist escapes me. Very good mid tempo tunes. Kool & the Gang fans should really give this a listen.

4 out of 5 stars A Brand New Me (HIS Best SOLO PROJECT).......2000-06-12

Overall this is a good CD to listen to. JT Taylor sound real good , what I mean is that, JT was not afraid to take a risk on the CD. A lot of music that is played on the radio sound the same. I probably would have given it Five Stars, if was not for the song titles and lyrics.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent remixes........2004-04-22

This is the third club single in a row for Simply Red and this is a great new single but not as incredible as the last two:"Sunrise" and "Fake". This is the classic song that has been done over way too many times but the original version works the best here. Mick Hucknell sounds at ease with this song. The remixes by Love To Infinity are good but a bit harder than what they normally do. The best mix here is the Antillas mix. Flawless stuff- a bit of a trance mix with some house thrown in. I like this mix the best because the vocals are put front and center this time not like the Love To Infinity Mixes.

All mixes feature the full vocals of the song.

3 out of 5 stars Eh, not too bad.......2004-04-01

I thought this song was ok, but it just doesn't sound right for the lead singer. Its almost like trying to listen to an old singer sing a song that he sang better when he was younger. Here is an example, Barry Gibb trying to hit the notes he used to hit on his songs, it just doesn't work anymore for him. Although its not terrible, I think that after a few times listening to it, you will start liking it more and probably sing it yourself.

3 out of 5 stars Soulful Love, Not All The Way.......2004-01-31

There isn't that much when it really come to conjuring the right kind of Soul song for love. That is just a shame these days, largely because there isn't a lot of Soul music out there anymore. The styles of those classic groups from The Temptations and The Supremes are just long-gone. For Simply Red, they just seem to showcase a style that is just related to the Soul that isn't there anymore. Largely, they do get that credit for being into the category of Soul. For their latest single, You Make Me Feel Brand New, the second single from their 2003 record, Home, brings a elegant example to their feel of Soul music. Unfortunately, the song doesn't seem to fall as heavily as some of the Mick Hucknall groups' earlier songs such as If You Don't Know Me By Now, and Holding Back The Years. Although the song is nice, there just could've been a better rhythm to it that should've been added.

        Album Description

UK pressing of this 2006 release, the third album from Long Island's Brand New featuring one bonus track: 'Luca' (Reprisal Version). Formed in 2001, Long Island's Brand New have built a massive cult following, largely from a notorious live show and relentless touring. The band's two previous albums (released on indie Triple Crown) have sold over 750,000 copies in the USA. Brand New's last album (Deja Entendu) is considered by many as one of this decade's breakout rock releases. 'The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows' became a favorite with MTV and Fuse, as well as a staple with many Modern Rock stations. Its follow up single 'Sic Transit Gloria' became a massive underground hit, fueled by a Marc Webb directed video. The band graced the cover of Alternative Press twice during this release and picked up ink in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Spin and The New York Times. The summer of 2006 marked the band's first US tour in three years. The sellout dates showcased several of the new album tracks, including 'Sowing Season (Yeah),' 'Degausser' and 'You Won't Know.' Brand New returns to the road with Dashboard Confessional. The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me was produced by the band and longtime friend Mike Sapone. Mixing duties were covered by Rich Costey, whose credits include Muse, Franz Ferdinand and The Mars Volta. Polydor.
