Waylon Live [Live] [Original recording remastered]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
First released as a vinyl LP in 1976, this was always the definitive live Outlaw country set. But it was originally meant to be a double album, and the nine songs that were edited out back then now appear here (with one from the initial album now deleted). They range from "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean" (which has a shell as hard as a desert reptile) to "Never Been to Spain" (well, he always did show erratic taste in pop songs). They join such LP tracks as the slow-death "Last Letter" and the rip-snorting "I'm a Ramblin' Man." The 1970s Waylors created a crackling, propulsive sound featuring loping rock-influenced beats, guitars that alternated between meditation and back-alley snarl, and Ralph Mooney's primer on how to play pedal steel. More than ever, this is the definitive live Outlaw set. --John Morthland

Sure, Waylon Jennings received the obligatory hosannas when he passed away in February of 2002, yet most of the ink seemed centered around his rebellious "Outlaw" persona, his personal battles, etc., etc. What about the music? Well, for those looking for proof of the man's musical prowess, this double-disc expanded edition of Waylon Live ought to do the trick. First released in 1976 as an 11-song LP, the album resurfaced on a single CD in 1999, adding nine tracks that were shelved when the originally intended double album was shaved down to a single vinyl disc. Now, it's a 42-track juggernaut that marvelously displays the breadth of Jennings's repertoire and the sinewy force of his Waylors. When the tapes rolled over three nights in the fall of 1974, Hoss and company were at the peak of their powers--growling menacingly at some times, purring seductively at others--with the steady, sturdy, unshakable rumble of bassist Duke Goff and drummer Richie Albright laying the groundwork and steel-guitar master Ralph Mooney vividly coloring throughout. Rest assured the 22 newly added tracks are by no means filler. On the contrary, as the set list for Waylon Live grows, so does its impact. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars THE Waylon album to have.......2007-05-09

One day after Waylon signed his landmark contract with RCA in 1974 granting him complete creative control he was booked to play CBGB's in New York city. At that time punk was king and the clientele of that particular establishment was predictably the saftey-pin-in-the-cheek crowd. When Waylon and Company stepped on the stage and looked out at the assembled mass he said "I don't know what kind of show y'all are used to, but this is a country music show."

Someone yelled from the back ofthe room "Who the &*^% are YOU??!"

Waylon replied "I'm Waylon G(& D^%$# Jennings, now shut up!"

He went on to do three encores.

On this disc he makes that statement again and again through the swagger, bravado and energy he expends on every song. There's no point in belaboring the obvious. It has been previously well documented that this is a quite hefty 42 track, two disc set chock full of Waylon goodness from beginning to end. The only thing I can add to what's been written is that this is more than Waylon's music. In the nearly two hours this disc takes up we get a glimpse the man's LIFE and his dedication to what he'd started going all the way back to his days with Buddy Holly. This is truly an amazing album. Buy it and request rush delivery.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon at its best!!.......2007-01-11

I bought Waylon Live in 2001, the one that had the 20 songs in it and 2 years later I found out about this one....this one kicks butt!! If you like real country, not the one they are playing today this concert is a must. Its more than 30 yrs old and if you play it against the new country singers its better by far.

5 out of 5 stars THE Waylon Album To Own.......2005-11-27

I own a lot of Waylon Jennings albums but I have to say, I find myself playing this one on 9 out of 10 times. If you want to buy just one Waylon album this is the one to own, the recording quality is brilliant for a live album and the music IS alive. Simply great, I can't say enough good things about this CD.

5 out of 5 stars They don't do it like this anymore..........2005-11-23

I just watched the latest "Country Music Awards" television presentation and it is amazing how far country music has fallen. This Waylon album, recorded at the zenith of country music is a stripped down, raw, electrifying recording of a band with so much talent that Nashville could not touch it. In the current era of slick, gilded, studio produced, over-manufactured vehicles for pretty, effiminate "country" singers posessing dubious talent, this album is a true testament to the musical genius of Waylon Jennings and the men that formed his band. Today's "country" music stars don't hold a candle to Waylon, and this album is all the proof you need.

5 out of 5 stars Another MUST OWN!.......2005-10-25

When you buy this (and you WILL buy this!), remember that every song is LIVE. Completely mind blowing. All of the raw energy is right there, with no bad spots. If all you are familiar with is the "Duke's of Hazzard" theme song, do yourself a favor and pick this up.

Though the "outlaw" tag is a little tired at this late date, this 1996 recording from the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD) represents an appealing country tradition, the "guitar pull." Such intimate, informal, round-robin performances, whether in a club or somebody's living room, find songwriters taking turns sharing material, much of it new or previously unrecorded, for their mutual enjoyment. All of the artists gathered on this Austin soundstage (which might as well be their living room) are Texas treasures, and most are national legends. Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson teamed together in the Highwaymen (who frequently performed Nelson's "We Don't Run," which they reprise here). Nelson has long been a champion of Billy Joe Shaver's songwriting, while Jennings recorded an entire album of Shaver's songs. The angel-voiced Kimmie Rhodes sings one duet with Nelson and another song she wrote with Jennings. Acoustic guitars and impromptu harmonies abound, and there's never a setlist. Highlights are as funny as Jennings's "I'd Have Been Out of Jail" (basically a barroom tale leading to the title punch line) and as chilling as Shaver's a cappella "First and Last Time." After Jennings strikes a religious chord with "I Do Believe," Rhodes takes a spiritual turn with "Espiritu Santo Bay," Shaver responds with "You Can't Beat Jesus Christ," Nelson offers "Too Sick to Pray," and Kristofferson previews the then-new "Pilgrim's Progress." The performance ends with the best-known tune, Nelson's "On the Road Again," which becomes a collective celebration of the joys of "making music with my friends." --Don McLeese

This 1989 taping for the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD) finds Waylon Jennings in fine form and particularly feisty spirits, from his playful jabs at hometown hero Willie Nelson through a definitive, go-for-the-throat rendition of Rodney Crowell's anthem "Ain't Living Long Like This." In addition to a litany of his "outlaw" hits from a decade or more earlier, he teams with wife Jessi Colter for duets on Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" and "Honky Tonk Angels" (the classic recorded by Hank Thompson as "The Wild Side of Life"). His cover of "Me and Bobby McGee" seems to draw inspiration from both Kris Kristofferson's original and Janis Joplin's hit. The crowd embraces the native Texan as a conquering hero. Spurred on, Jennings and the band bring a rough-hewn freshness to material that might otherwise seem way too familiar. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Real country pickin' and singin'.......2007-01-19

Ahhhh... remember when country music used to be about how well you played and sang a good song instead of whether your product was marketable or not? This DVD will remind you of those days BIG TIME.

Waylon Jennings is definitely a country outlaw but his approach is without reproach (Hey! That was kinda catchy!). If you're lucky enough to see this disc, watch his left hand on the neck of the guitar as he strolls through these tunes. Next time through, watch his right hand for the pickin'...

Guitar players will tell you that good sound might start with the guitar and its strings and a good amp, but the real sound comes from the player's use of his/her fingers and Waylon's got that in spades. He also has a great country voice. You can just picture him in a smokey roadhouse joint on the outskirts of a small town with every pickup within a ten mile radius parked out in the lot.

There are a few great pickers out there now... Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban among them, but Waylon Jennings was talented enough to develop a signature sound, one that sounds like no other. As is typical of the other LIVE on Austin City Limits series, that sound is beautifully captured here. Get this one, throw it in the player and just sit back and enjoy yourself thoroughly. Trust me; it'll be easy.

4 out of 5 stars Live from Austin, TX.......2006-08-14

a great CD, with many of Waylon's greatest hits, very enjoyable

5 out of 5 stars PURE GREATNESS!!!!!!!!!.......2006-05-16

This DVD captures Waylon before the health problems took hold of him. His playing and vocals are simply awesome!!! You also get the honor of seeing the steel-guitar genius Ralph "Moon" Mooney perform his magic on all of the Waylon Jennings classics! I highly recommend anyone who appreciates great country music with a driving beat to buy this one for the ages.........

5 out of 5 stars A legend in fine form...nothing better!.......2006-03-06

Waylon Jennings was a powerhouse of musical energy. Few of his recorded performances capture that like this 1989 concert, performed on April Fool's Day. There's no joke here, though...Waylon was among the best performers the music industry ever saw, or will ever see!

As he kicks off the album with a joke and a rocker ("Ya'll say you're ready? I ain't."), you can tell this is gonna be one hell of a ride. And it is. Through rejuvinated classics that seem comfortably familiar and yet refreshingly new, he declares his outlaw status ("Trouble Man," "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys," "I've Always Been Crazy"); shows his sensitive side ("Amanda," "Luchenbach Texas"); and makes bold declarations of his own beliefs and attitudes ("America," "Bob Wills Is Still The King").

The effect is an energetic, feisty, rockin' live collection. LIVE FROM AUSTIN TX is yet anothe classic Waylon Jennings album. It's not quite as good as his previous WAYLON LIVE (especially the two-disc set), recorded in the early seventies; but then, that's probably one of the greatest records of all time. However, this album is probably one of the best that will be released this year, and is certainly one of Waylon's most captivating performances. So buy it and experience the sensation of an honest man, with his faults and flaws, just trying to sing a few songs and influence a few lives. He'll probably influence yours. For the better or worse...at least you'll have a great soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars A great artist comes to life ... again ... LIVE.......2006-03-05

Waylon Jennings was a legend and a music icon. In this latest offering everyone has a chance to see Waylon at his best, and live ... re-live a concert with the greatest singer of our time. And, yes, I happen to be biased and opinionated about his music.

This album captures the essence of Waylon at a time in his career when he had mastered the life of a country sing. He worked the audiences like a master, providing more that just song and music - he was a part-time comedian. His music was as good as ever. He displays the commanding way he had with his trademark leather covered Telecaster - the staccato bark was roaring. For the true Waylon fans, the sound emanating from his guitar was a big part of the sound that captured your souls. Waylon's voice was at its best, strong and clear night after night. He had one of the greatest voices of all time, and you can hear it in each of his songs - powerful and clear.

Something Waylon brought to the stage was a sound that reminded you that he WAS the same singer from his records. While the tempo might change from year to year, and some songs may not be word for word that same as you heard on the single. However, you knew it was Waylon Jennings - this collection reminds you of that. He was real in a way that few captured.

The songs on this CD (and DVD) are the ones you paid to hear ... over and over. The ones you wanted to hear Waylon sing. He rocks on the songs you expect to rock the house, and closes with a powerful rendition of "I Ain't Living Long Like This" ... the best country-rock song. When you listen to "Me And Bobby McGee" it sounds like it was always Waylon's song. His duets with Jessi Colter (Mrs. Waylon Jennings) are two of the best they did. "Suspicious Minds" was a classic for this duo, and you knew when Waylon played the opening notes ... Jessi was coming. They follow that with "Honky Tonk Angels" which was a great song for them, but also showed the chemistry that had on stage.

The band he assembled for this era in his career was one of the best. They played Waylon's music the way it was supposed to be played. Mooney, Jigger, Jeff, Barry, and Kevin bring the sound of Waylon's distinctive style to life. They were amazing pickers, and truly, fantastic people - I met each of them, and always considered them friends.

Every song is great, and a great reminder of the man we lost too soon. If you are a Waylon fan, you'll love taking this trip back in time. And if you aren't a Waylon fan, this CD may make you wonder why.

I bought both the CD and DVD because they reminded me of everything that I loved about Waylon's music ... the way it captured my soul, and has held since I heard him sing so many years ago. Heck, I bought a copy to give to my ex-wife because we enjoyed so many shows ... and this was the Waylon we saw and knew.

Recorded onstage at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in January of 2000, Waylon Jennings's Lucky Dog debut revisits "Amanda," "Good Hearted Woman," "Waymore's Blues," "Never Been to Spain," etc. Wife Jessi Colter even reprises her biggest hits, "I'm Not Lisa" and "Storms Never Last." But don't dare mistake this collection as mere nostalgia. The title says it all. Given the 62-year-old Jennings's well-known health problems in recent years, these powerful, charismatic performances reflect an almost Lazarus-like renewal that begins with the opening number, Tony Joe White's "Closing In on the Fire," and doesn't end until the final notes of "Can't You See." Jennings holds his own in duets with stylistic disciples Montgomery Gentry, Travis Tritt, and pioneer new traditionalist John Anderson, all of whom have to hustle to keep up. In the end, one tune truly sets the tone: White's inspired "Goin' Down Rockin'." As Waylon sings the chorus, "If I can't go down rockin' / I ain't goin' down at all," he clearly ain't kiddin'. That alone is cause for celebration. --Rich Kienzle

3 out of 5 stars Good, but should have been better.......2004-10-31

This is really amazing to me. Waylon in 2000, with the same strong voice and same awesome guitar playing that he has alwasy been known for.

But, dadgum, why did they need to put Montgomery Gentry, John Anderson, and Travis Tritt on it??? The guests in no way add to the mix, if anything, they completely take away from the song.

This would have been an excellent live set, Waylon was inspired on this night, the sound is crystal clear, Waylon's guitar was loud and up front.

Mabye one day, they will realease the entire concert, which the guest's didn't intrude on.

3 out of 5 stars Waylon Comes Full Circle.......2004-01-11

I don't take criticizing Waylon lightly. I own just about EVERY item he has recorded, literally. This CD is worth buying for the simple fact that it is his last and for that we are all very sad but if you are a hardcore Waylon fan, this is not the CD for you. If not for his incredible talent, this CD would be horible. Waylon comes full circle. After leaving Nashville and inventing his own sound, here at the end, he returns with a horn section? Travis Tritt? Recording Dobie Gray's Drift Away? Let's say its a long way from Waylon Live and The Restless Kid Live at JD's. The raw Austin sound is gone and the slick country of today invades. If you listen to his music and miss him daily like I do, this CD will not do the trick.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-08-11

What wonderful talent. This CD has several artists worth listening to from Travis Tritt, John Anderson, Montgomery Gentry and what a talent the lady is who sings with Waylon on "Never Been to Spain", "Nothing Catches Jesus by Surprise" and "Drift Away". Now, SHE really needs to get her own thing going too. I highly recommend this CD as a collection of music you will NEVER hear on the radio.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon's Last Album--How Hard is That to Say?.......2002-09-22

I've been a Waylon fan since I was just a little brat listening to Waylon's "Greatest Hits" on my brother's 8-track player. So the words "Waylon's last album" are harder than hell to say. But this is it, and if it has to be the last one at least it is a befitting coda to one of the most innovative careers in country music. Waylon kicks ... on this CD, recorded live over two nights at the Ryman Auditorium in January 2000. He's joined by superstars like Travis Tritt and Montgomery Gentry and he outsings 'em all. From the bluesy opening number, "Closing in on the Fire", to the last song, "Can't You See", which Waylon did here more like the Marshall Tucker Band original than his own 1976 hit version, Waylon was in top form, the booming baritone clear and powerful. Why the hell can't some of the young country punks have voices like Waylon? Anyway, I think the new, original songs on this CD are its best tracks, including the title song and "Goin' Down Rockin'". Yeah, Waylon, you sure as heck went down rockin', and we will all miss you. Hearing this CD makes me sorely regret the fact that I never got to see Waylon live. Waylon is gone, but the legend remains. This CD is proof that it always will.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon Jennings passed away today............2002-02-14

I can't believe how awful I feel. Waylon was a living legend, that's for sure, but he was so humble about his place in the world. I had the good fortune to seem him live in concert last year, and he had lost nothing from the vitality he had shown on his records over the course of his career.... If you haven't heard this, you are missing out on what will stand as the last phase of Hoss' career. His band is tight, Waylon's vocals are cooking, and the guest stars are there to pay homage, like John Anderson and Travis Tritt. And, folks, the horn charts on this album are hot! I love a good horn section, and Waylon got him one of the best. It has a gripping, live feel to it. Just listen to that opening track and you will hear what I mean!

With this cd, you can pay a little visit to Waylon for the rest of your life. Just turn the lights off and shut the door, put this cd on and you are in the audience with Waylon and there ain't much better in the world at that moment. God Bless You, Hoss!

The 1970s Waylors created a crackling, propulsive sound featuring loping rock-influenced beats, guitars that alternated between meditation and back-alley snarl, and Ralph Mooney's primer on how to play pedal steel. More than ever, this is the definitive live Outlaw set. --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars Waylon takes no prisoners!!!!!!.......2002-08-29

Only one of the best LIVE albums ever created, period. When I finally heard the remastered version with the extra songs put back in it was totally incredible!!! Ramblin Man,Lonesome,Ornery and Mean,This Time and Look into my Teardrops show the whole beautiful picture of Waylon Jennings as a singer, writer and artist. Changed country music and here's a good reason why!!!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Waylon.......2002-06-21

Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson made Texas the cultural center of the world back in the 1970s. (That's only half joking!) This is one of Waylon's best recordings from his early to mid-career days, a collection of 20 songs performed live in Dallas and Austin in 1974. In fact, if I had to pick one Waylon CD as a favorite this would be it.

The sound of Waylon's band is interesting. It has a sort of high-pitched jingle-jangle sound with a lot of steel guitar, 12 string guitar, and harmonica. Its not honky tonk, or low down blues, it's a mixture of folk and rock and country. I could have listened to a little more jamming from the band on many tracks.

My favorite song on the CD is the closer: "This Time." The band is at its funky best on this track. The band also excels on the rock song, "Never Been to Spain." Hell, I like all the songs -- straight forward, no-nonsense, no-frills, quality tunes, many of them written by Jennings or his buddy Willie. Waylon faded away a bit after the 1970s, but in his heyday there was nobody any better in the music business.

5 out of 5 stars What a find!.......2001-11-26

I first saw Waylon perform live in 73, a year before this was recorded. This was in a high school gymnasium in Vernal Utah. He was about an hour and a half late and the audience was in a very non receptive mood by the time he arrived. His bus had encountered heavy snow traveling from Denver. At the beginning of the performance the audience was very cool. We were sitting in the first row and my daughter looked up at him and said " mommy, where's Waylon?" This got a big smile from him. From that moment, it seemed he was singing especially for us. He put on a very incredible performance. The audence soon forgave his late arrival. At the time, I wasn't very familiar with his music but from that evening's performance, I became a life long fan. I own more Waylon albums that any other performers. I also saw Waylon's Outlaw's tour and Are You Ready For The Country tours. they were very good , but none could compare to the first performance. This live collection captures much of that early magic and includes many more great songs than the original release. If you aren't a Waylon fan, get this one, you soon will be. Already a fan? This is a MUST !

5 out of 5 stars Must have for every Outlaw fan.......2001-07-12

This has to be one of my all time favorites! It's been in my cd player since i baught it 2 years ago...seriously! His version of Pick up the Tempo is a classic that'll put a smile on your face and a tear in your eye. Everyone should have this.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Tame For An Outlaw Album.......2001-01-28

I've had this one since it came out in it's original version in the '70's. As music, it isn't bad, but it doesn't have the "bite" or edge I would expect from an "outlaw country" album. Certainly not what I would consider raucous or rowdy. In fact, it's fairly laidback. Compare this with Shaver's UNSHAVEN:LIVE cd to see what I mean. To me, that one is the standard for all outlaw albums. (For those who don't know, it was Billy Joe Shaver who wrote Waylon's HONKYTONK HEROES album, considered the first outlaw album.)

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2000-11-08

I found this CD very enjoyable. Not as professional as recent CD's, but pure talent of Waylon jumps out. A reminder of the early days in his career when his voice dominated the music. I wish Waylon would release more of this kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars THE RESTLESS KID.......2000-05-03

During my years of detailing Waylon's recording career and writing discographies and liner notes for him I have been constantly aware of his versatility in his love for music. On this CD nothing is more evident than just that. Eventhough these songs were "recorded" early in his career the scope and range of the material is fascinating. From composers like Buck Owens, Bob Dylan, Harlan Howard, Johnny Bond and even Carl Sandburg, Waylon has taken the material and done it his way. Despite the background distraction of patrons of JD's the sound quality is excellent given the circumstances of the audio systems used in those early days. On doing the liner notes for Waylon's 1974 album THIS TIME I wrote that he could sing a menu and make a hit. Every song on this CD carries Waylon's own stamp...from "Sloop John B." to "Streets Of Laredo" to "Girl From The North Country" it's all pure Waylon. No wonder Bobby Bare pushed so hard for RCA to take a listen and sign this young man from Phoenix. Bear Family has once again, following on the heels of their monumental boxed sets of Waylon Jennings material, brought forth another chapter in the musical career of a country legend. John L.
