Anyone who loves Robin & Linda Williams (and who has heard them and not loved them?) will no doubt feel the same about Barry & Holly Tashian, another married pair of singer-guitarists who straddle the country-folk boundary. The Tashians' Ready for Love showcases the kind of Appalachian close-interval harmony singing that links the bluegrass of the Stanley Brothers, the country of the Louvin Brothers, and the rock & roll of the Everly Brothers. The couple wrote 10 of the album's dozen tunes, and the simple but clear sentiments and melodies of the songs are perfect for this kind of singing. Their duet singing is remarkable, so close that it seems like a third voice, similar to Barry's and Holly's individual voices but different from either one. On the love song "Heaven with You," they achieve a hymnlike devotion; on the bluesy "(No One Gets Their Kicks On) Highway 86," Barry's high, lonesome vocal becomes even more lost-sounding when Holly joins in. On the title cut, "Ready for Love," the harmonies seem to buzz with excitement at the imminent arrival of romance. --Geoffrey Himes

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03
The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.
Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26
This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.
Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06
Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.
This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.
The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

As formula-satisfying as most of his soft, soulful contemporary jazz is, Walter Beasley allows himself the luxury of branching out. On Ready for Love, the alto saxophone veteran goes on his first reggae outing, "She Moves Me," which with its synth trimmings won't sell any package trips to Jamaica, but still should appeal to his fans. Beasley also continues to find his comfort zone as a singer, channeling Curtis Mayfield via singer William DeVaughn and his 1974 hit, "Be Thankful for What You've Got." Beasley's cast of collaborators is large--eight producers are credited--but at this advanced stage in his career, people know what he wants and custom-deliver it to him. --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:

For lovers only !.......2007-01-23
"Free" opens with vocals from Tiffany Davis. The song then blends in Beasley's indisputable alto saxophone work along with drum work from Lil' John Roberts and Anthony Nelson Steele.
"La Nina" has Beasley echoing the genius of Kenny G on the alto saxophone, along with more intricate drum work from Roberts and Steele, buffeted by smooth percussion work from Ricardo Monzon.
"Be Thankful For What You've Got" has masterful keyboard work from Beasley, Steele, Dow Brain, Phil Davis, James Lloyd and Orville Wright. The title track has whimsy sounds accompanied by more keyboard work and the dulcet strains of Beasley on the sax.
To sum up, "Ready For Love", by Walter Beasley, is the perfect album to turn on when you want to get just the right affectionate response.(S.N.Kent)

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

After 40 years of playing traditional blues, John Hammond reinvented himself at age 59 and began his current winning streak by trading his acoustic guitars for an armful of Tom Waits songs, resulting in 2001's exceptional Wicked Grin. Hammond stays plugged-in on Ready for Love, but taps a diverse group of songwriters that includes Waits, Willie Dixon, Los Lobos's David Hidalgo, George Jones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and country crooner Freddie Hart. His voice--as full of character as weathered tarpaper on a Delta shack roof--does wonders with numbers like Hart's "Easy Lovin'," Billie Holiday's "Comes Love," and a slow, creep-show take on Dixon's "Same Thing" with a Hammond guitar solo that's deliberate perfection. The CD kicks off with "Crown Vic," a John Lee Hooker-inspired winner that's the second number Hammond's penned and recorded himself (the first was "Baby, Won't You Tell Me" from his 1964 sophomore album, Big City Blues). Hidalgo does double duty as producer and guitarist, infusing the album with the same spare, blues-drenched character that he brought to his Latin Playboys and Houndog projects. He and guitarist Frank Cirillo also provide the disc's sonic signature: intertwining, tremolo-soaked vintage guitar tones that help even the contemporary numbers sound like classics. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
A few surprises here.......2005-11-11
Hammond had said around the time the CD came out that he'd not been pleased with early attempts at writing, but I certainly had not problem with this one. Kind of a Hooker-ish guitar line, and that deep, drawling tone of voice, quite alright with me.
John did pick some interesting covers: Freddie Hart's "Easy Lovin'" got a very different workout, somewhere between country and blues, Tom Waits' "Gin Soaked Boy" and a couple of George Jones tunes, "Color of the Blues" and "Just One More."
Augie Meyers and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) figured in the recording and it's really a good recording. Some unusual tracks, some different takes and some definite work put in to make this album stand out from others.
This CD gets regular play by me, that should say something.
BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE EVER!.......2003-06-30
Great CD.......2003-05-15
Still in the Waits groove, but wait...there's more.......2003-04-04
So I wasn't really looking out for John Hammond's new album. I saw it on a Border's listening station and tried it out from idle curiosity. The first tune "Slick Crown Vic," had me thinking this wasn't bad--still making the same general kind of noise he made with Waits. "Easy Lovin'" had me grinning at the choice of such a song. But "Spider and the Fly" sealed the deal. The rhythm guitar and the sly, growly vocals, along with an insistent, sinuous groove, just made me believe a song and its master had finally met. The Stones did it well, even at their young age at the time, but that song was made for this treatment.
That to me is the highlight of the album, but it doesn't slide far from that level. The two Waits songs are right in keeping with the previous album. The two George Jones songs are just the durnedest thang to hear a cover of anywhere, but guaranteed make you smile with glee. The only song I think could have been traded for something elsse is his take on "Money Honey." Not that it's bad--the world just doesn't need another cover of that song.
I wouldn't put this album in the blues box--or any other box for that matter. It's not for guitar freaks or crooners or any other "interest group." It's for anyone who's ever lived and been tempted by the seedy, sensuous, side of life. If you've ever "said 'Hi' like the spider to a fly," this album is for you. If you ever got real happy just by hearing a song done just right, this one has some real happy in store for you.
I didn't plan to buy it, but once I heard it, I couldn't live without it. I second the other writer's nomination for "Best of the Year." It's just cool.

As we've come to expect from Peter Schickele (aka P.D.Q Bach), this is a comedy CD based thoroughly and utterly in classical music in-jokes, puns, references, mis-hearings, etc. Here, we're in the world of a casual, presumably classical music radio show ("all Pachelbel, all the time"), with a host and two sidekicks, all of whom can't resist "witty" chitchat. There are spoofs of fundraising (they hope for $100.00 by the end of the show), a song called "Sam and Janet," which actually turns into a polyphonic version of "Some enchanted evening" (get it? Sam and Janet = Some enchanted), a set of four folk songs accompanied by "devious instruments," one of which is a cardboard tube, which is to "played" by hitting it against someone's head. And one of the rules of the station is that all music must be in a major key until after 11 PM. Fans of Schickele who truly love his sophisticated spoofs of classical music will find fewer of them here than usual, oddly enough, but the CD is fun. And a highlight is a non-classical number or two (snuck in by the co-hosts, Jocko and Blondie) sung by Elvis's brother "Enos," who liked his name until they started calling his brother "Elvis the Pelvis." Delightful, if this is what you're looking for. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:
Not My Favorite.......2006-04-04
For the dedicated PDQ fan only..........2005-10-29
I cannot comment on whether this send-up of classical radio
stations is really fair. But, when I am trapped in a car without
my IPOD, I do listen to many pop radio stations and the
material on this CD with lots of annoying and stupid DJ
chatter is all too familiar. But that is the problem. Listening
to this CD is like watching a comedy skit that goes on and on
longer than it has to. Yes I did laugh a few times at the material
and the liner notes. But I cannot say this is really even "average"
PDQ material, hence the below average rating.
Better than Citizen Kane.......2005-02-16
Elliott Forrest
blistering parody.......2004-09-03
Very witty parody.......2002-07-02
Other hilarious songs are the four "Folk Song Upsettings" for soprano, piano, and "devious instruments" including Prof hitting himself over the head with cardboard tubes.
The reason I give this only a 4 rather than a 5 rating is that some of the actual PDQ instrumental music isn't that good. Sure, it's obviously not SUPPOSED to be good, but I mean it isn't bad or zany enough to be as funny as earlier PDQ Bach pieces like "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" and "Shleptet" and "The Stoned Guest," all of which were more inspired comedically and musically.
Still, this is definitely a CD to make you laugh. The best parts make it worth going through some less inspired sections.

The cast also featured Roy Castle as Cosmo Brown, Danielle Carson as Kathy Seldon and Sarah Payne as Lina Lamont. A fantastic ensemble was headed by Joyce Carpenter.
Danielle Carson brings the house down with the 'Valentine Girls' in "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", which replaced "All I Do Is Dream Of You". Ms Carson also gives a lovely treatment of "Would You?".
Tommy Steele proves his showmanship with "You Are My Lucky Star", "Singin' In The Rain", and "Fascinating Rhythm". Roy Castle is great in the comical "Make 'Em Laugh", while Sarah Payne is given time to shine in "Temptation".

Few recording producers and performers take the time and care to so intelligently exhibit a sampling of the rich and colorful American hymn repertoire. This thoughtful and varied program of hymns, Shaker songs, anthems, and spirituals shows what good things can happen when a top-rank choir and director and an accommodating record company join in such a project. The 20 selections come from a variety of sources, including The Southern Harmony (published in 1834) and The Sacred Harp (published in 1844). The Shaker tunes are from the vast collections at New Lebanon and Pleasant Hill, New York, and Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Four of the six spirituals and several of the hymns are arrangements by Alice Parker; others are arranged by James Mulholland. Among the hymns and spirituals are two American choral classics: Randall Thompson's famous and oft-performed "Alleluia" and Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven." --David VernierCustomer Reviews:

Remixed Hits: From Elvis To Elton!.......2004-01-17
No doubt inspired by the success of Elvis Presley's recently remixed songs, a remixed version of "Are You Ready For Love" was released in England. On August 31, 2003, the song went all the way to number one in the British charts! Listening to the song, it's easy to hear why this once overlooked song became a number one hit. The tune is catchy, the arrangement is soulful with some subtle disco touches, and Elton's vocals are strong and assured. The original song ran nearly 8 minutes long, and had to be spread out over both sides of the 1979 vinyl single. The "79 Radio Edit" takes the original version of the song and trims it down it 3 minutes and 33 seconds of it's best elements. The end result is the creation of yet another Elton John classic!

Are You Ready for Love was always the best song from the sessions. And as good as this is, the album version, with the Spinners, is even better.
Who knows if America is ready for a pure Philly Soul disco track in 2003. But if any song is capable of hitting it big 26 years after it was recorded, this could be the one.
A great over-looked gem from Elton's recording career.

--Geoffrey HimesMusic Album:
