About the Artist
When someone makes the statement "she's one in a million".....the one they are talking about is Roxie Dean. A country fan from birth, the Louisana native has become one of the brightest threads in the tapestry of Nashville's history. Already a hit song writer having penned the #1 hit for Jamie O'Neal "When I think About Angels" and Leanne Womack's "That's Why They Call It Falling", Roxie herself is one of Country Music's greatest female entertainers. Now, with an album of her own,"Ms America", which includes her hit single "A Soldier's Wife", Roxie is ready to take a major career step. A true narrator for the life experience, Roxie combines honesty, humor, vulnerability, and experience to touch the hears of all who hear her, male and female alike. Having been compared as a female Roger Miller, people walk away saying "That woman just sang my life story....I felt like I've known her all my life !". After hearing her almub "Ms America", you'll agree.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for.......2007-05-29

This particular album/CD enabled me to finish a search for several Vikki Carr songs I had been looking for. It is an excellent compilation. Thank you for providing it.

5 out of 5 stars GLORIOUS VOCALS~BRAVO VIKKI CARR!!! .......2005-07-30

Vikki Carr is still going strong as of Xmas 2004 as a sold-out cheering crowd witnessed last Christmas in an extraordinary holiday concert in Orange County, California where Ms. Carr sang soulfully in superb peak form!!! What else would one expect from this peerless singer who has been turning out an endless amount of extraordinary classics since the sixties...the seventies produced this stellar set that should have set the American Radio airwaves on fire but foolishly they would only play "singer/songwriters" at this time and these two incredibly brilliant and beautifully produced lp's were sadly and foolishly overlooked...it was America's loss and the Spanish language audiences gain as Vikki Carr went on to sell $$$$$$$$$$millions in the Spanish language market ...these great albums are so beautifully and soulfully sung that with any radio exposure at all these gorgeous lp's would have had great success with many "hits" and at least a Grammy or two...but many of us enjoyed these great lp's anyway and I personally wore out my vinyl copies so I was thrilled when Collectables had the good taste to lovingly remaster these timeless classic lp's for all to enjoy!!!! Vocally brilliant and deeply soulful is the great Vikki Carr and anyone who has had the pleasure and wonderous experience of seeing this great and special lady on stage needs no further ado...at her peak "Ms. America" is a timeless masterpiece and with the magnificent "One Hell Of A Woman" the title speaks for itself! Anyone who enjoys singing at its very finest, do not miss this stellar collection of magnificent performances sung by one of the very greatest singers of this past century and currently and if Vikki Carr comes your way, do not miss the opportunity to experience of one of the all time greats...Sinatra loved her and anyone who has seen this extraordinary singer in concert knows that fascinating story! Vikki Carr I Love You and thank you for all the incredibly great years of wonderful concerts and records and may we have the pleasure of many more...DO NOT MISS THIS GORGEOUS COLLECTION OF MAGNIFICENT VOCAL PERFORMANCES THAT SHOULD HAVE WON NUMEROUS GRAMMY AWARDS BUT THEY MUST HAVE BEEN ASLEEP...once again!!!

5 out of 5 stars Two brilliant seventies albums.......2002-07-12

The two albums on this CD demonstrate that Vikki continued to make outstanding music long after her sixties hit It must be him. Here you will find a great selection of songs, including some brilliant originals, with plenty of covers as was usual in Vikki's English language recordings. Rescue me is NOT a cover of the Fontella Bass sixties hit with that title, but a completely different song.

Killing me softly (a hit for Roberta Flack) was apparently inspired by a Don McLean concert. Other covers include songs normally associated with Helen Reddy (Ain't no way to treat a lady), Anne Murray (Danny's song), Carly Simon (Haven't got time for the pain), Dottie West (Six weeks every summer), John Denver (Sunshine on my shoulders), Gladys Knight (Neither one of us) and Jim Croce (I'll have to say I love you in a song). So Vikki's covers were chosen from a variety of sources, but all of them sound wonderful with Vikki singing them.

This is an excellent collection from one of America's finest ever singers. I look forward to more of Vikki's recordings being released on CD - this is great, but there is plenty more in the vaults.

5 out of 5 stars At Last.......2002-05-04

One of my favorite LP's from our Vikki's Columbia days was "One Hell of a Woman". With this double release, Ms. America now has a special place in my collection. Hearing these albums (in their entirety) was a thrill for me. I'm so tired of compilations. When I was a kid buying Vikki's albums, I bought "An Album". I wasn't just buying a collection of her songs put together by someone who didn't really know her the we do, but a new experience, a new "Vikki" each time. I'm so tired of getting a new CD, only to have a few songs that I didn't have before. Now with the release of "It Must Be Him", and "Live at the Persion Room", I'm able to have, on CD, two ablums that meant so much to me when I was growing up. "Live at the Persian Room" was the first VC album I ever owned. And "It Must BE Him" is such a classic! Vikki-thanks for the Memories/Memorias. I was hooked on you then, and I'm hooked on you still. Your magic goes on and on. You do do it for me.

5 out of 5 stars In The Lounge With Vikki.......2002-01-10

In these two early-'70s albums, Vikki Carr is a bra-burning, Tex-Mex lounge version of Helen Reddy, both in her ultra-feminist pose and in her eerily Reddy-like voice. Those were the days when disgruntled housewives were told by female university-types to chuck the house, hubby, and kids for that journey to self-fulfillment; and Carr was obviously trying to cash in on this socio-trend. Marketing ploys aside, this is a GREAT easy listening CD from the days when hit songs actually had musical hooks and catchy melodies and no F-words. Adult-oriented artists of the time like Mel Torme', Julie London and Vikki Carr often took on pop hits and gave them a dash of professionalism and sophistication, even though the practice was derided by critics at the time. A lot of these songs--One Hell Of A Woman, Danny's Song, Last Song, Sunshine On My Shoulders--DO sound better when played by top session people and a singer who doesn't hit bum notes every two bars. Listening to this CD makes me want to grow mutton-chop sideburns, wear an Arnie Palmer polyester suit with a smiley face button, and watch John Dean at the Watergate hearings. If that's not a recommendation to buy, then, good grief, what else can I say?

5 out of 5 stars Dean Offers A Stunning and Hearfelt "Ms. America".......2006-01-20

Prime Cuts: Why They Call It Falling, Sand Castles, Remind Me

Roxie Dean opens her debut asserting that "I talk loud, I stay our late/I drink bud light instead of champagne/Smoke Marlboros with the home girls." Indeed Dean is not a Barbie-doll faux of a singer, and "Ms. America" is not a manicured non-descript collection of songs that came right out of Nashville's conveyor belt. Rather, like Gretchen Wilson and Tanya Tucker, Dean exudes her 3-D personality throughout these 11 cuts. Unabashedly combining her tuff girl attitude with her heartfelt romanticism, Dean is not afraid to speak her mind and rend her heart. In fact, though these cuts deal primarily with relationships, they express a diary-like frankness filled with memorable lines executed through Dean's mellifluous vocals. Such a view is obviously shared by many of Dean's peers, this is why many have recorded tunes penned by Dean herself, and these include Reba McEntire ("My Sister"), Lorrie Morgan ("Do You Wanna Buy Me a Drink (Frank)?"), Jamie O'Neal ("When I Think About Angels"), Cheryl Wright ("Wouldn't It Be Cool"), Lee Ann Womack ("Why They Call It Falling") among others.

Primed with a razor-edged sharpness, the revved up title cut and current single, finds Dean jettisoning the typical bikini-wearing super slim image for the loud, diet-free, bacon cheese burger fun-loving gal as the icon of Ms. America. And she continues to speak her mind about the kind of man she desires with the rowdy "A Man like Bugs," that is Bugs Bunny, rather than those crawling pest: "I want a man like Bugs Bunny/A cute tail and a whole lot of money." In lesser hands, this may come across as caricature, but Dean with her engaging vocals pulls this off with honors adding levity to the set. And when it comes to giving her man the heads-up into a woman's thoughts, she's not afraid to let him know on the relentless rocker "Women Know Women."

But the apogee of the album resides in the ballads: best of which is "Sand Castles," a tune Dean co-writes with Bonnie Baker. Refusing to be shelved emotionally, "Sand Castles" is about taking risks in romance despite the waves of disappointment. But what really makes this an import from heaven is Dean's nuanced approach to the lyric's ache, giving this a jaw-dropping performance. This is career defining track. Pining down the often elusive and inexpressible pain of heartbreak on "Remind Me," Dean's restraint but emotive delivery makes sorrow palpable. Also, quite stirring is the first single "A Soldier's Wife," a war-related song told from the perspectives of the wives of these armed men. Eschewing the politics and religious aspects of war, Dean goes straight to the heart giving voice to the feelings of lost, loneliness, pain and uncertainties.

The only more familiar song here is "Why They Call It Falling," a track Dean and Don Schlitz co-wrote for Lee Ann Womack. Dean offers her take of it which is less polished, but more engaging than the superstar's version, giving us a more intimate feel to this gorgeous ballad about the complexities of being in a relationship. If there's any shortcoming with this CD, it's that it only has 10 cuts with a repeat of "A Soldier's Wife" this time injected with comments from the wives of these serviced men detailing their struggles and pain. As far as debut CDs go, Dean's "Ms. America" shows promise. Refusing to be domesticated, Dean shows character and personality that shines as bright as her talents.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a great record. Funny. Touching. A great listen!.......2005-05-07

This is a wonderful CD! Roxie Dean will have you smiling, laughing and tapping your feet. She'll also touch your heart. With a great, warm voice, she sings with real passion and you'll proabaly feel like she's singing right to you.

From fun-loving romps like "A Man Like Bugs", "Women Know Women" and "Just Like a Man" to touching ballads like "Why They Call It Falling", "Sandcastles" and "A Soldier's Wife" you'll find you have more than one favorite song on this album. When it's over, you'll want to play it again right away!

Every since we heard Lee Ann Womack's version of "Why They Call It Falling" (on her album "I Hope You Dance"), my family's been singing along. We've been waiting to hear Roxy sing her own song and it was sure worth the wait! We'll be singing along in the car and, with all the great songs on this record, I'm sure you'll find yourself singing along, too! Roxie's the real deal!

      Album Description

"Lesli Wood tackles subjects that, in the hands of a lesser musician, would turn into tired and sentimental clichés, but Ms. Led's leader is a surprising success ... an addictive listen from start to finish." -- Devil in the Woods "Driven by taut guitar lines, rhythms that propel dancing feet, and vocals that seethe with quiet intensity one moment, then suddenly ignite into barely controlled yowling the next." -- Time Out New York "With a sound that falls somewhere in between other NW female-fronted bands like Sleater-Kinney and Visqueen, Ms. Led are a power-pop four-piece with a strong but not heavy-handed feminist message and a straightforward punch ... an energetic, inspired act with enough experience and stage presence to give their sincere songwriting a solid backbone." -- Seattle Weekly

Seattle's favorite political band returns this summer with its highly anticipated third album, Shake Yourself Awake! Written over a span of two years in a highly divided political climate, Shake Yourself Awake offers a call to action with unapologetic energy and enthusiasm. During this time, Ms. Led has continued to tour, bringing its high-energy live show to the masses while sharing bills with The Avengers, The Thermals, The Reputation, and The Gossip. Ms. Led's first two albums quickly sold out of their first pressings, and all the while the band maintained its DIY ethic and built a strong following. Shake Yourself Awake contains Lesli Wood's strongest and most eclectic songwriting to date, varying from the punk energy of opening track "New Agenda" to the '60s girl group stylings highlighted in "Up to the Old Tricks." Shake Yourself Awake is Ms. Led at their best.

Ms. Led is known for their infectious songwriting - catchy riffs, melodies and hooks that draw you in. With a decidedly feminist message, they have been referred to as a "must see" live show opening for Imperial Teen, Visqueen and The Butchies. Their 2002 album 'Afternoon In Central Park' received rave reviews nationwide. Ms. Led recorded their new album, 'These Things We Say,' with Martin Feveyear (Presidents Of The United States Of America, Mudhoney, Queens Of The Stone Age). The new songs provide an eclectic mix of Ms. Led's styles while maintaining their distinct high-energy political edge. This release proves that Ms. Led is ready to take their revolution to the next level.

4 out of 5 stars ten great years.......2000-06-14

A variety of musical styles and a wide assortment of artists are brought together on this recording celebrating the first decade of my favorite record label-Dorian. It is all here: early music to twentieth century Latin American orchestral pieces. A lot of my favorite artists (Custer LaRue, The Baltimore Consort, Carol Thompson, Chatham Baroque, and Julianne Baird to name a few) are represented here. This disc is interesting and entertaining listening on its own merits. It is an indispensable introduction to the label. Either way, I recommend it.
