4 out of 5 stars Early Elvis.......2006-08-17

This CD is a scream - literally - as Elvis, Scotty Moore and Bill Black rock out on the Louisiana Hayride. There's a lot of narration between songs. It's informative, during the first listen anyway. It's the music that stands strong here.

5 out of 5 stars GOSH DARN RIGHT GOOD ROCKIN 2NIGHT.......2004-02-26

Let's clean up our language a bit. This is great music essential Elvis! Essential rockabilly tight rhythm section!

5 out of 5 stars God Damn Right Good Rockin' Tonight!.......2003-10-04

This is a truly amazing archive into the spark that spawned 'The King of Rock'n'roll. The sound quuality is great and so is the sound. Elvis is in top form and you can hear the audience love it. What can beat a fresh faced, hiccupin' Elvis with a stunning Scotty Moore on guitar, electrifying us with his haunting guitar echo and Bill Black laying down the vibe.

Album Description

Features songs from two hit Broadway shows by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz starring Fred Astaire, Perry Como and more. Inside U.S.A. was recorded before the show was fully cast in order to beat the 1948 ASCAP strike, which explains why non-cast members performed some of these songs. Most tracks on CD for the first time!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great material on both scores.......2005-09-16

"Inside U.S.A." was a huge hit revue with the unique Bea Lillie, Jack Haley of "The Wizard of Oz" and such future names as Carl Reiner (not on the recordings). "Atlanta" was apparently cut as it doesn't appear in any programs of the show, and it is revue material with topical references so younger Broadway fans may wonder what the hell Bea is singing about (Atlanta was known for it's federal prison, imagine her in a neat striped suit and matching pillbox hat with a ball and chain to twirl), but her spirit was perhaps as well captured on these tracks as it ever was in a studio recording. "The Bandwagon" is also wonderful, Fred Astaire at his stage height just before he went Hollywood (with his sister Adele, a bigger star then), and a pioneer recording that was LP length before that existed. All the material by Dietz and Schwartz in it is classic and showed up in the very different film 25 years later. But these recordings may be better, and the sound is brilliant for the time. So, a bargain and let's hope the trove of theater recordings continues to be mined - how about all the Decca recordings of Bea, including the unreleased 60s recordings as well as the two lps from her legendary "Evening with Beatrice Lillie"? (See the Joyce Grenfell "Requests" recent CD for a handfull of the Decca material, beautifully remastered as bonus cuts).

Album Description

The recordings in this package of the Classic Rockabilly radio Series are samples of live performances caught on tape during the first two runs of the Louisiana Hayride. These performances are available nowhere else in the world. You'll hear legends like Elvis and Johnny Cash alongside lesser known artists like country's Bob Luman and teenager David Houston as they try to find their own musical identities during these live radio broadcasts. The Louisiana Hayride was quite tolerant and even embraced the new music and artists being birthed in the late 1950's and early sixties. One of the inventors of Rockabilly, Elvis, can claim his start at the Hayride and that fact opened the doors for everyone else. Because these performances are live, you'll also hear introductions of the artists and band members, slip-ups and even a live commercial spot or two.

Some recordings will also be a little more “fuzzy” than others. This is due to the age of the tape recordings and the state of technology at the time. So kick back and listen to the honest-to-goodness radio shows of the past with the sounds of the legendary Louisiana Hayride.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not "classic," perhaps, but highly entertaining........2003-05-24

The best track on this fun CD is, unfortunately, the least in terms of audio quality--a great live rendition by Elvis and his band of "Baby, Let's Play House" that sounds like it was preserved with a four-dollar cassette recorder on low batteries. Still, it's something to hear, and hear again. The sound quality is much better on the remaining tracks, expecially on the Johnny Cash sides. Everyone, with the exception of the always-stiff Cash, sounds looser in person than on disc, including David Houston, whose "Sugar Sweet" is a potent rockabilly number, even if the singer's sense of 1-2-3-4 is less than potent. Marvel at the ease with with Houston's band stays on the same, off-meter page (though there is one moment of hesitation on the lead guitarist's part). Very pleasant listening.

2 out of 5 stars Playing too fast.......2003-05-22

The radio producer had every band playing way too fast in comparison to their record as a way to generate additional excitement. The only performance that is paced well is Elvis -- where he reprises his song at a slow pace.

4 out of 5 stars Long-winded MC intros hurt this CD!.......2006-08-02

I agree with others that this music and Johnny Horton is great on this CD and when you first hear it you really get the atmosphere of these historic radio transcripts. But all the long-winded intros by the MCs and Homer and Jethro, etc. really hurt repeat listenings and slow things down when you only want to hear Johnny's songs. I ripped my CD and edited out everything except the songs themselves and when Johnny introduces his own songs, and the result was amazing! - kind of like "The Concert Johnny Horton Never Gave". What a hootnanny! This is the way I listen to this album, and I listen to it often. Perhaps in hindsight the manufacturers should have made the intros and songs into seperate tracks so it would be easier for the average person to rip just the songs to their iPod or whatever. Great performances by Johnny Horton and decent sound quality, nevertheless.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD I ever heard!.......2006-06-10

This CD proves that Johnny Horton was one of the best singers and entertainers there ever was,and his exuberence and the audience reaction are like nothing I have ever seen or heard in my lifetime. It has me saying "I'm Wild about Johnny Horton!" He was the very best!

    5 out of 5 stars Memorable '50s stage performances.......2004-06-24

Scena's latest volume shines a welcome light across the final five years of The Singing Fisherman's life. Beginning with 1956's "Honky Tonk Man" (his first chart success) and running through the historical songs with which he etched his lasting memory, Horton's performances seamlessly fuse folk's storytelling with honky-tonk's twang and rockabilly's drive. Horton is revealed as a masterful, driving performer who could hold an audience with a knowing pause, or rev them up with a driving beat and spirited vocal.

Horton's performances of "Honky Tonk Man" and the follow-up, "One Woman Man," combine the honky-tonk delivery of Hank Williams with the propulsive beat of rockabilly. His cover of Williams' "Jambalaya" is very much his own, as are revved up readings of "John Henry" and "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It." Horton's second wind of chart smashes is fully represented, including spirited performances of "Johnny Reb," "Battle of New Orleans," "When It's Springtime in Alaska" and "Sink the Bismarck." His mastery of folk singing turns these from novelties into showpieces.

Those familiar with Horton's work will treasure the opportunity to hear his songs amplified by an adoring crowd; those who only know the hits will be amazed by Horton's one-of-a-kind folk-rockabilly-country fusion. This may be the best disc yet in what's becoming one of the industry's brightest archival series.

5 out of 5 stars Lively hardcore country from the 1950s.......2004-04-27

This set of archival recording captures late-'Fifties honkytonker Johnny Horton at the height of his powers, playing on the KWKH Louisiana Hayride program, which once competed with The Grand Ole Opry for preeminence among the live hillbilly radio shows... Horton was one of the Hayride's biggest draws, a fiery good ole boy whose delivery was just inches away from the rockabilly sound of the times, and this disc gives a great sense of his style and charisma, as well as what his live repertoire was like. There are rollicking versions of his big hits -- "Honky Tonk Man," "Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor," "Battle Of New Orleans," etc. -- as well as amped-up versions of folk tunes like "John Henry" and "Rock Island Line." The between-song banter and emcee introductions also give a glimpse into the was live performances felt on the Hayride stage... Fine sound quality, too! Horton fans, or honkytonk aficionados alike should get a real kick out of this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Still Laughing after 5 days, THANKS TO JUNE!.......2006-07-31

June Carter fans, get ready to buckle your seatbelts and blast off into a 1960 show of Louisiana Hayride, starring the Beautiful JUNE CARTER!!!!!!!!! I put this CD in the first day I bought it. I was up laughing until 2 AM! June has once again done an outstanding job.

These segments from the "Louisian Hayride" TV/Radio show feel as if your really at the show. June is hilarious (as usual) and includes some really funny jokes into her high-pitched, bouncy, energetic songs.

If your a new fan, this is a perfect way to get to know June's comedy. It'll bring a smile to your face, and it has some really great songs. If your an old fan, June has once again outdone herself.

So what are ya waitin' for, fellers? Buy this CD today and experience it for yourself!

    Love,
    June

    5 out of 5 stars June was a jem.......2006-03-28

I just bought this cd in Nashville and I haven't stopped listening to it since. Listening to June tell her "famous poems" is a real treat. The songs are good and June is funny. Each time she is introduced the audience goes crazy for her. After I listened to this cd, I can see why. This is a good item for long time fans or new fans (thanks to Walk the Line.) This was money well spent.

4 out of 5 stars Rare spin of Carter's early stage work.......2003-11-27

This is a truly fascinating look at June Carter's early-60s stage act, including both familiar songs and comedy routines that many listeners have probably never heard. In addition A.P. Carter songbook standards, "Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow" and "Wildwood Flower," Carter shows off her original corn-pone humor and quick wit.

She shows tremendous command of the comedy stage, lampooning the lyrics of Marty Robbins' "Big Iron," reciting a humorous poem about Elvis, and tossing off frenetic asides and barbs. But much like Buck Owens, when she swings from comedy into song, she's riveting, as are the top-notch pickers with whom she's surrounded. Supported by a full band, with electric guitars and pedal steel, these recordings are fuller than the parallel Hayride volume recently issued on Johnny Cash.

A pair of tracks from 1961, highlighting a "Stars of the Opry" show at the Hayride, features Carter singing and joking with the Wilburn Brothers. But when they swing into A.P. Carter's "Worried Man Blues," the Kingston Trio's then-recent hit simply disappears in their wake. A 1962 appearance yields Carter's rapping version of "The Heel," and a 1965 visit is highlighted by her duet with Johnny Cash on "It Ain't Me, Babe," and her backup singing on Cash's Sun-era "Ballad of a Teenage Queen."

Sound quality isn't state-of-the-art, but it's clear, and Carter and the band are nicely isolated - no doubt reproduced from transcription records of the original KWKH broadcasts. The tracks are framed by Carter's stage patter and comedy, along with applause and cheering. It gives you a good sense of how much the audience loved Carter's combination of song and shtick. This is a rare glimpse of Carter standing tall on her own, unsupported by either the Carter Family or Johnny Cash. These recordings are a great find on both a beloved artist and the legendary show for which she performed.

    5 out of 5 stars It's Country Music History.......2003-10-27

it's corny, and the music isn't great. But if you love June Carter you will want this CD. It has a way of making you feel you are there at the hayride show. What more can I say, it is history, history of one of the greats. Get it and enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars A Problem Solved.......2007-06-09

This excellent album provided me with an answer to a problem which was causing some concern. I am directing a production set in Louisiana in the 1980s. How do I set the mood before curtain-up and how do I maintain this during the show. These four CDs gave me all the material I needed to create the atmosphere needed. Not only that it's just plain 'great listening'

Music Mill Entertainment has compiled four volumes of material showcasing Shreveport's popular and influential Louisiana Hayride show of the '40s, '50s, and '60s. Volume 1 highlights a true historic moment: Hank Williams's September 13, 1952, return to the Hayride following his dismissal by the Opry, which included a slipshod performance of "Jambalaya." Ray Price, in his honky-tonk prime, sings "Crazy Arms." Webb Pierce performs his 1955 hit "I Don't Care." Jim Reeves provides a masterful rendition of "Am I Losing You," and Johnny Cash returns as a guest to sing his 1959 classic "Five Feet High and Rising." George Jones's rendition of his 1964 hit "The Race Is On" clearly hails from a later Hayride incarnation, since by then, the weekly show had ended. In all, all these sets make one hanker for single-artist Hayride collections. (NOTE: Recording dates are not included.) --Rich Kienzle

    5 out of 5 stars Hayride Lives.......2001-11-01

The Louisiana Hayride is like the slightly disreputable, sometimes drunk, sometimes sorry bachelor uncle of the Grand Ole Opry. Not as uptight and willing to have electric guitars, drums and genre shakers like Elvis, Johnny Horton and others on it's show. The quality of this series of recordings is really good considering they were taped forty or fifty years ago! Get them all! Also check out Louisiana Hayride Years (a book) by the Louisiana cat that oversaw the whole thing. Stories and insights that were new to me.

4 out of 5 stars A Welcome Addition to The Barn Dance Recordings.......2000-04-05

The release of this new series on The Louisiana Hayride is a welcome addition to the long-neglected history of Americas' barn dances of the last century. Like the recent double CD set on Dallas' Big "D" Jamboree, this material is culled from the golden era of country and early rock and roll, giving us invaluable glimpses into the "live" sounds of many legends, and legends-to-be. Even though the between-song patter and ambiance of this famous show is mostly left off of these sets (quick fade-outs are usually the norm here), the material stands on its own as a highly recommended listen for anyone interested in authentic American roots music.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent look at early years.......2006-11-25

This is a great CD for the diehard fan. The versions of the two Leadbelly covers "Rock Island Line" and "I've Got Stripes" are dynamite. I agree with the reviewer who suggests the Folsom album for newer fans, as it as a great edgy feel as Cash was coming out of his drug-fueled years (which "Rock Island Line" gives a sense of). The Madison Square Garden album catches Cash during the same tour as the San Quentin album at one of the great peaks of his career. I would give this album 5 stars if it were not for the mixed sound quality. Several songs (including "Hey Porter," sadly) sound like bootlegs.

5 out of 5 stars Put it in your collection.......2003-11-28

For a collector of Cash, this one is a gem, only if your getting started, you may want to buy one of his concerts at Folsom Prison or San Quentin. The sound quality on this disc isn't excellent, though considering the times in which these recordings were made, it is atmospheric. This is a "fun" album filled with laughter, cheering and music. A good one to put in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Rare find of Cash's early stage work.......2003-11-27

Though Cash's stage show from the 1960s is well documented by his prison concert recordings, his earlier work with the Tennessee Two is known mostly through studio recordings made at Sun. This volume collects a series of performances that Cash made on the Louisiana Hayride program, no doubt saved by virtue of the Hayride's radio broadcasts on Shreveport's KWKH.

The earliest recording, a 1955 performance of Cash's first Sun single, "Hey Porter," is nearly breathless, as Cash, Perkins and Grant drive home their railroad rhythm. Mid-50s takes of "Luther Played the Boogie" and "I Walk the Line," songs that Cash would play thousands of times, sound fresh and new. His introduction to "I Walk the Line" ("Friends, we'd like to do one side of our latest release, on Sun, this is the one we're the proudest of...") makes it clear just how new.

A trio of tunes from 1959 includes the lesser known, but no less worthy, Cash composition "Give My Love To Rose," Gene Autry's folky "Goodbye Little Darlin'," and a master showman's reading of Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line." Ten tracks from 1962-63 highlight Cash's successes at both Sun and Columbia, including "Big River," "Five Feet High and Rising," and "I Got Stripes.". The disc concludes with a folksy 1963 take of Harlan Howard's "Busted," and a 1959 commercial Cash made up on the spot for Southern Maid Doughnuts.

Sound quality isn't state-of-the-art, but it's clear, and Cash and the band are nicely isolated (i.e., this wasn't recorded by a microphone in the audience). The tracks are framed by a smattering of stage continuity (announcers introducing Cash, Cash introducing songs, cracking jokes and ribbing his band mates), applause and cheering. It gives you a real sense of how much excitement Cash and the Tennessee Two generated on the Hayride.

By collecting tracks across an eight year period, the disc shows how Cash's stage show evolved from the bare-bones trio work of 1955 at which Cash endeared himself to the Hayride audience, to the star-turns of 1962 and 1963. These recordings are a great find on both a legendary artist and the legendary show ("The Cradle of the Stars") for which he performed.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary live recordings.......2003-10-07

This is the legendary program that helped many important newcomers. "The Cradle of the Stars" was another name used to describe "The Louisiana Hayride". KWKH in Shreveport, Louisiana was the 50,000 watt powerhouse that introduced Elvis, Hank Williams and so many others to a national audience before most of them went to the "Grand Ole Opry". Johnny Cash was one of these young hopefuls from SUN records in Memphis. Cash had a very unique sound that from his very first record set him apart from the rest. This collection captures live vintage recordings from 1955 thru the 60's when Johnny was having success on Columbia Records. A must have for the fans of the late great Johnny Cash. Don't pass this one up!!!
