Loose Diamond

On past albums, Texas native Katy Moffatt has tended to camouflage her flair for hard-country hurtin' songs beneath a familiar acoustic-folk veneer. Loose Diamond brings Moffatt's country leanings front and center without ignoring her broader folk, rock, and blues influences. Producer Dave Alvin has assembled a first-rate West Coast roots-country studio crew, including members of his own Guilty Men and Dwight Yoakam's band. Moffatt's voice sounds equally at home on Hank Williams Jr.'s honky-tonk howler "Stoned at the Jukebox" and on a slowed-down arrangement of the Blasters' roots-rocker "So Long Baby Goodbye." But the standout track is a duet with Alvin on the traditional folk standard "The Cuckoo" that benefits from Greg Leisz's raise-up-the-dead slide-guitar playing. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Blown away.......2002-11-21

After a very good folk music night at the 12 Bar Club in London we decided to return the day after for a drink without knowing who would be on stage. It was Katy Moffatt and I was totally blown away by her musical honesty. Loose Diamond is like that, honest and touching, like nothing is between her voice, guitar and the listener.

I've been a fan of Katy Moffat for more than 25 years. Last Saturday I had the opportunity to see her in a very intimate setting in San Diego. In perfect voice, Katy's performance was flawless. Her set showcased many original tunes as well as covers by John Hiatt and Bonnie Raitt. It's mysterious to me that a performer of Katy Moffat's caliber is not better known while so many lesser performers are all of the airwaves.

This disc knocked me out. Moffatt and producer Dave Alvin go counrty and Katy turns in the best vocal performance i've heard in many a moon. Kind of a country counterpoint to Alvin's fabulous Blackjack David, these disc's sound great together. The two have joined forces frequently and they make a heck of a pair! The playing is understated, Alvin gives a lot of room for some remarkable dobro, slide, mandolin and fiddle work by a terrific back-up group featuring members of Alvin's Guily Men and others. Dave himself shows up to great effect just as Katy usually does on his discs! You don't hear country music like this anymore, it's retro, but so well produced, well sung and played that the timelessness of this genre stands out loud and clear. No watered down Eagles riffs sung with a twang here. Instead are hints of Patsy and Kitty, played for all it's worth. If you like real honest to god country music, this is for you.
