Customer Reviews:
Johnny Cash Sings some Hank Williams.......2007-01-05
That in mind it might not be so disappointing that only 6 of the 17 tracks are Hank Williams.
I have been buying Cash cd's for a decade now but recently I found out that I wanted to buy all the original recordings on CD. So I bought this cd not because of the Hank Williams theme, but because I love Johnny Cash.
Hank Williams was not an old man, but he wrote many of the best songs that has ever been written. In my opinion there are no better man to sing them then Johnny Cash.
Then there are 9 Johnny Cash tunes on here as well and many of them was not familiar to me, but I really loved them.
This is overall a great CD but not one of the best. Therefore 4 out of 5
A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT.......2004-12-26
I hate to give it only four starts, but.................2004-12-22
"Hank Williams & favorites is only the beginning ~ John Cash.......2003-09-26
Let's get to the stand outs and highlights ~ "I LOVE YOU BECAUSE", Johnny sings this from the heart, and that's why we love him just because ~ "MEAN EYED CAT", just give your money to your honey at the general store, Cash the master storyteller tells it like it is ~ "I CAN'T HELP IT (IF I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU)", just listen to these lyrics, Johnny makes it all believeable as we think of June Carter.
The Sun Years will always be some of my personal favorites ~ this is a great beginning to survey the Johnny Cash sound that still rings true in our ears. The alternate and previously unreleased bonus tracks are a plus. Every track on this album shines, which makes it a very good value to add to your ever growing collection. A worthwhile venture is the result ~ we'll sorely miss him, but through Varese recordings we can relive and enjoy "The Man in Black" aka ~ Mr. Johnny Cash...gotta love it!

Fine re-working of post-Sun collection of Sun sides.......2003-07-23
Varese's first-ever CD reissue of this album takes several liberties, including, most substantially, using the undubbed masters in preference to the original chorus-dubbed tracks. One can argue as to whether Cash originally intended for the undubbed trio recordings to go out, but there's no arguing that removing the syrupy chorus (most likely charted by Jack Clement) only amplifies these tracks' true grit. Ironically, many of Williams' own recordings were similarly overdubbed after the singer's death, only to be re-released in original form in more recent times.
Williams' songs fit Cash's tic-tac rhythms to a tee, with the pining "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)" and mournful "(I Heart That) Lonesome Whistle Blow" matching Cash's emotional delivery particularly well. The latter, along with "Cold Cold Heart" appear here as bonus tracks, having inexplicably been left off the original album. Additional bonuses include alternate versions of Cash's "Come Stranger" and "Wide Open Road," as well as a chorus-backed take of "I Love You Because."
Like many of the post-Sun assembly albums, this one isn't completely coherent, and duplicates key Cash tracks available in many places. But with a chance to hear the undubbed masters of the Williams' tracks, this provides compelling, new ground for domestic Cash collectors.
