Michael Peterson used to be a motivational speaker, and now that he's a country star, he seems to have a similarly inspirational intent. Like his hero Garth Brooks, Peterson makes music to live by, except that (unlike Garth at his best) he tends to deliver his messages as wisdom imparted from on high rather than lessons learned. So even a song with solid advice like "You Find Love When You Make It"--a cut that follows the album's Garth + Michael McDonald sound equation--comes off like you're being talked down to by someone who's sure he has all the answers. And some of those answers are downright scary. "Two of the Lucky Ones," a duet with Bekka Bramlett, means to express a profound gratitude but winds up expounding a grim theology: if you've found true love, Peterson explains, then you're one of a "chosen few" upon whom "heaven sure smiled." Apparently then, an arbitrary heaven frowns down upon the unlucky rest of us, or ignores us altogether. So much for motivation. --David Cantwell

Why is it that Seal's albums seem to be readily disposable at first listen but always prove to be more timeless than could be predicted? On Human Being, Seal's third release (and first with a title other than his name), several of the tracks are layered with prominent, syrupy strings, and his predictable vocal crescendos veer dangerously into the land of forgettable grocery-store-intercom adult contemporary. But hang in there; there's a lot more substance here than what will first reach your ear. This complex release is a little harder to categorize than his debut record (the dance album) or his second disc (the power-ballads album). The first two tracks hint that--oh, no--it's going to be another late-'90s trip-hop album, but thankfully, Seal doesn't go there. Listen a couple of times--you'll hear everything from orchestral swells to tinny rhythm guitar, experimental keyboard effects to late-night jazz piano accompanying Seal's standard "Can't we all just get along?" lyrical message. These tracks are heavily produced and thickly layered but at the same time his most intimate and personal songs to date. The album's cover art is a good metaphor for its mood: Seal is naked and crouched over--cowering or ready to strike? So, too, the songs lash out, then plead, then sting, then soothe. Start counting; this album has a long shelf life. --Beth BessmerAlbum Details

Ignore the critics...this is a jewel.......2007-01-17
A little uninspired, but a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.......2006-12-28
The one fatal flaw of the album is that, for the first and only time in his career, Seal doesn't sound like he's giving it 100%. Maybe 95%, but for we picky Seal enthusiasts, that's not good enough. The songs don't seem to just flow from his heart like those on his earlier albums. Don't get me wrong: the album isn't bland, and there's still enough drive in Seal's voice to keep the album going until the end, but it lacks the refreshing quality of SEAL 1 and 2, both of which felt like breaths of fresh air. HUMAN BEING still has its share of gems, though, like the beautiful, comforting title track, which in the same classy fashion as on SEAL 2 is repeated at the end of the album in the form of a reprise. "State of Grace" has a sort of troubled tranquility to it, which makes it a delight, and "Latest Craze" glitters like few of Seal's other compositions do. The reassuring ballad "Just Like You Said" is another of the album's finer moments, as is the longing "No Easy Way" and the dance-worthy "Excerpt From".
Do yourself a favor and disregard the many opinions floating around about this album and simply listen to it yourself. In my opinion, it's not as good as SEAL 1 or SEAL 2, mainly just because Seal at times sounds a little uninspired, but HUMAN BEING is a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.
A distant third best Seal album.......2006-06-04
By the time you reach "No Easy Way" (the absolute gem on this album) you wonder if there would be any reason to listen to the first few tracks again. In the end, it lands a comfortable third spot in Seal's discography, not only chronologically but in terms of quality too.
Excellent.......2006-03-24
It's also quite nice to listen to when a date comes over.
Another classic from Seal.......2006-02-12

Morrissey Upholds His Fine Tradition On Singles.......2006-05-23
"You Have Killed ME", the A-side, was one of the highlights to Ringleader Of The Tormentors. While the album was not bad, it just wasn't a genius LP. However, this song most definately is. He shows off a bit of wit with the phrasing "As I live and breathe, you have killed me." A 3 minute pop song that shows off Morrissey's strengths - his wit, his voice, and the fact is he knows how to carry a tune through.
The B-sides show that Morrissey certainly won't give us filler for the B-sides. "Human Being" is definately one of his recent best songs, and follows in the vain of "Friday Mourning" and "Never Played Symphonies" of being simply great songs that will get ignored because he didn't have the sense to put it on an LP. Morrissey stops being so damn coy for six minutes and just comes across as honest. Add a saxophone solo, and you got a classic right there.
"I Knew I Was Next" still keeps the honesty going as he is clearly singing about the fact that a lot of people hate him and ignore his talents. Clearly a reflection on the 7 years of silence where he was simply just an outcast from the world. Think of it as the follow up to "You Know I Couldn't Last" from You Are The Quarry. He comes off not spiteful, but instead of self-fufilled. Another classic track.
The weakest track on here is "Good Looking Man About Town". For whatever reason, it just doesn't resonate with me. Morrissey is back to being coy, and it just doesn't work that well. It still is a good track, but it is one of the few Morrissey B-sides that actually does have B-side written all over it.
Essentially, if you are a Morrissey fan, you have to buy this. For Americans, it covers both UK singles, and for everyone else, it gets the B-sides onto one disc.
Also, for some fun, look at the CD itself. Not only does the top look like a 45 record, but so does the bottom. I don't know how they did it, but it is cool to actually see them not just replicate the grooves on only the top, but also the bottom. It's the little flourishes like those that make this single feel special.

back on track!.......2006-04-08
Moz's love for The New York Dolls has never been a big secret so it's surprising that it took this long for him to cover one of their songs on record. he's been known to use "Subway Train" as a segway to other songs in the live setting and here "Human being" sounds great. and it's nice to hear Boz on sax again.
"I Knew I Was Next" is another very solid entry to the Ringleader b-sides. featuring a hooky chorus and a very strong vocal melody, and a cool 60's hammond organ popping up in the refrain, giving it a quick garage band sound. overall, the track shares a similiar sound to that of the Maladjusted b-side "I Can Have Both." great.
i have two (minor) gripes about this cd. one, the promotional sticker on the front of the cd case states that there is a fold-out poster included inside. which is surely not the case. there is a picture of Morrissey inside the cd insert...but that is not a poster! and must these kinds of stickers be stuck directly on the case? why do record pressing plants do this? errr...bugs me. just stick it on the shrink wrap, not the case. so, that's my second gripe. but these are complaints regarding the packaging, not the actual music.
oh, yea, there's a video on here too. Morrissey's strong point has never been videos, but thankfully , this is a pretty good one. enjoy!

Brothers & Sisters, the MC5!.......2003-02-28
My husband, who was down with the White Panthers when he was a kid, points to this collection as perhaps the best from the John Sinclair archives. I agree. Certainly the sound is far better than usual, with some terrific live outtakes from Jams. I Believe To My Soul is a standout, along with the alternate M.C. Is Burning and the J.B. medley. The rantings of W.P.P. "spiritual advisor" Jesse Crawford are much appreciated, including his support of the Zenta Commandments...
White Panther Chairman John Sinclair is present for some stoned saxophone ramblings on the crazed improv I'm Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver. Remember Eldridge from the good old days when he was the eloquent Minister of Info for Black Panther Party before he lost his mind and became a born-again Republican? At any rate, this is a solid collection for fans of this great band, and stands as an excellent companion piece to their three classic albums.

KIM MITCHELL goes "pop"!.......2002-04-11
very synthesizer laden album and very poppy. I think about half
the album is very listenable...and the other half rather for-
gettable. I can't even remember the song titles of the songs I
dislike! PATIO LANTERNS was, in my opinion, a very bad choice
as a leadoff single. It's one of the corniest songs KIM MITCHELL
and PYE DUBOIS ever wrote together and probably a big disappoint-
ment for those who bought his previous album for GO FOR A SODA.
GET LUCKY is a terrific hard rock song, with a great guitar solo
from MITCHELL.THAT'S THE HOLD is another catchy hard rock song
with a very singalongable refrain.Either of these songs would
have been excellent choices as lead off singles. Other tracks I
liked were ALANNA LOVES ME, IN MY SHOES and HITTING THE GROUND.
The rest of this is either too synth heavy or too mellow or too
poppy or all of the above at the same time! Still worth buying,
tho!

One man band!.......2005-11-02
This CD is something akin to sitting in on a master class, especially if you're a musician or ever hope to be one. Having seen James live on several occasions, I can tell you this CD comes as close as any recording could to capturing the complexity, the nuance, and the intimacies that James casts upon anyone fortunate enough to have heard him in person. He possesses a personal charisma and depth that are allowed to shine here, as it is simply the man and his guitar.
His guitar playing is utterly unique. I've never heard another like him. He voices chords much like I've always thought James Taylor did--more like a piano than a guitar. But James' style is uniquely his own; full and rich and rhythmic...even orchestral. He just doesn't need a band, because all of the necessary elements are there in his fingertips.
Then there is his voice. Delicate and subtle, he can also cut right through you and make you like it. He can damage you and heal you. He can hang a note on a cloud and you just want to go there with it. Mostly, you just shake your head and ask yourself "How'd he do that?"
If this is all sounding a bit too visceral, all I can say is you just have to hear it for yourself. Then you will be, like so many others who have heard him, another fan of this extraordinarily gifted man.

Great "back to basics".......2002-03-18
As so much contemporary pop/rock is doctored by electronic studio wizardy, we sometimes forget how wonderful it is to hear great singing to pretty melodies. "Freelance Human Being" allows us to remember. The CD is Stanley singing original (mostly love) songs accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. The result is some beautiful, albeit not ground breaking, music. You will find yourself singing along in no time. Great "rainy day" music! James Lee Stanley's music should be more widely heard.
