Michael Peterson used to be a motivational speaker, and now that he's a country star, he seems to have a similarly inspirational intent. Like his hero Garth Brooks, Peterson makes music to live by, except that (unlike Garth at his best) he tends to deliver his messages as wisdom imparted from on high rather than lessons learned. So even a song with solid advice like "You Find Love When You Make It"--a cut that follows the album's Garth + Michael McDonald sound equation--comes off like you're being talked down to by someone who's sure he has all the answers. And some of those answers are downright scary. "Two of the Lucky Ones," a duet with Bekka Bramlett, means to express a profound gratitude but winds up expounding a grim theology: if you've found true love, Peterson explains, then you're one of a "chosen few" upon whom "heaven sure smiled." Apparently then, an arbitrary heaven frowns down upon the unlucky rest of us, or ignores us altogether. So much for motivation. --David Cantwell

Why is it that Seal's albums seem to be readily disposable at first listen but always prove to be more timeless than could be predicted? On Human Being, Seal's third release (and first with a title other than his name), several of the tracks are layered with prominent, syrupy strings, and his predictable vocal crescendos veer dangerously into the land of forgettable grocery-store-intercom adult contemporary. But hang in there; there's a lot more substance here than what will first reach your ear. This complex release is a little harder to categorize than his debut record (the dance album) or his second disc (the power-ballads album). The first two tracks hint that--oh, no--it's going to be another late-'90s trip-hop album, but thankfully, Seal doesn't go there. Listen a couple of times--you'll hear everything from orchestral swells to tinny rhythm guitar, experimental keyboard effects to late-night jazz piano accompanying Seal's standard "Can't we all just get along?" lyrical message. These tracks are heavily produced and thickly layered but at the same time his most intimate and personal songs to date. The album's cover art is a good metaphor for its mood: Seal is naked and crouched over--cowering or ready to strike? So, too, the songs lash out, then plead, then sting, then soothe. Start counting; this album has a long shelf life. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the critics...this is a jewel.......2007-01-17

Though his least successful commercial album, this is his most original, personal, and daring album. It was hurt by lack of a radio hit, but from beginning to end, this album is a true work of art. At the time he made it, this was Seal's favorite album. This is an album to be savored from beginning to end. A little darker, deeper, and more reflective than his previous albums, it shines as a collection of songs for those that are willing to dig a little deeper for good music. My favorite Seal album by far, and I like all of his work.

4 out of 5 stars A little uninspired, but a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.......2006-12-28

I must admit I'm a little surprised by the almost scathingly harsh critical reaction to Seal's third album, HUMAN BEING. (At the moment, it's the only one of Seal's albums not to be self-titled.) The primarily-negative reviews for the album left me expecting little, which may be why the album blew me away when I first listened to it. HUMAN BEING isn't Seal's finest work (his previous album, SEAL 2, holds that distinction), but that doesn't mean that it's not a great album on its own.

The one fatal flaw of the album is that, for the first and only time in his career, Seal doesn't sound like he's giving it 100%. Maybe 95%, but for we picky Seal enthusiasts, that's not good enough. The songs don't seem to just flow from his heart like those on his earlier albums. Don't get me wrong: the album isn't bland, and there's still enough drive in Seal's voice to keep the album going until the end, but it lacks the refreshing quality of SEAL 1 and 2, both of which felt like breaths of fresh air. HUMAN BEING still has its share of gems, though, like the beautiful, comforting title track, which in the same classy fashion as on SEAL 2 is repeated at the end of the album in the form of a reprise. "State of Grace" has a sort of troubled tranquility to it, which makes it a delight, and "Latest Craze" glitters like few of Seal's other compositions do. The reassuring ballad "Just Like You Said" is another of the album's finer moments, as is the longing "No Easy Way" and the dance-worthy "Excerpt From".

Do yourself a favor and disregard the many opinions floating around about this album and simply listen to it yourself. In my opinion, it's not as good as SEAL 1 or SEAL 2, mainly just because Seal at times sounds a little uninspired, but HUMAN BEING is a beautiful, soothing album nonetheless.

3 out of 5 stars A distant third best Seal album.......2006-06-04

"Human Being" pales as a whole, when compared to Seal's first two albums. The album starts off with two left feet, it seems, and doesn't seem to get things going in classic Seal style until "Excerpt From" and the tracks that follow it.

By the time you reach "No Easy Way" (the absolute gem on this album) you wonder if there would be any reason to listen to the first few tracks again. In the end, it lands a comfortable third spot in Seal's discography, not only chronologically but in terms of quality too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-03-24

Possibly one of Seal's best albums. Whether with friends or alone, I often find myself sitting back with a glass of something in my hand, and just listening. Since purchasing this album, this has become my favorite method of relaxing.

It's also quite nice to listen to when a date comes over.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from Seal.......2006-02-12

Wow, Seal has done it again. This is a very mellow album by his standards but it great nontheless. I agree with a lot of reviewers who wrote you have to listen to it several times before you realise you have a gem in your hands. It may not have sold well but am glad I have a copy and in my view its priceless. This is music at its best, easy to listen to and a couple of the songs would leave you mesmerized or in a trance like state. My favourite songs in here include Colour, Just like you said, state of grace, Human beings and lost my faith. This is great stuff and I highly recommend it. Can't wait for his next album.

5 out of 5 stars Morrissey Upholds His Fine Tradition On Singles.......2006-05-23

If you purchase a Morrissey single, you should know one thing - you will get your money's worth. For whatever reason, Morrissey always seems to save some of his best tracks for the B sides to singles, and this one carries on the tradition.

"You Have Killed ME", the A-side, was one of the highlights to Ringleader Of The Tormentors. While the album was not bad, it just wasn't a genius LP. However, this song most definately is. He shows off a bit of wit with the phrasing "As I live and breathe, you have killed me." A 3 minute pop song that shows off Morrissey's strengths - his wit, his voice, and the fact is he knows how to carry a tune through.

The B-sides show that Morrissey certainly won't give us filler for the B-sides. "Human Being" is definately one of his recent best songs, and follows in the vain of "Friday Mourning" and "Never Played Symphonies" of being simply great songs that will get ignored because he didn't have the sense to put it on an LP. Morrissey stops being so damn coy for six minutes and just comes across as honest. Add a saxophone solo, and you got a classic right there.

"I Knew I Was Next" still keeps the honesty going as he is clearly singing about the fact that a lot of people hate him and ignore his talents. Clearly a reflection on the 7 years of silence where he was simply just an outcast from the world. Think of it as the follow up to "You Know I Couldn't Last" from You Are The Quarry. He comes off not spiteful, but instead of self-fufilled. Another classic track.

The weakest track on here is "Good Looking Man About Town". For whatever reason, it just doesn't resonate with me. Morrissey is back to being coy, and it just doesn't work that well. It still is a good track, but it is one of the few Morrissey B-sides that actually does have B-side written all over it.

Essentially, if you are a Morrissey fan, you have to buy this. For Americans, it covers both UK singles, and for everyone else, it gets the B-sides onto one disc.

Also, for some fun, look at the CD itself. Not only does the top look like a 45 record, but so does the bottom. I don't know how they did it, but it is cool to actually see them not just replicate the grooves on only the top, but also the bottom. It's the little flourishes like those that make this single feel special.

4 out of 5 stars Short but Sweet.......2006-04-09

Unlike most artists who release singles padded out with 20 minutes of remixes Morrissey's single releases come with new songs instead not included on his new album and they're all solid. You Have Killed Me is a great new song,I'm a Human Being has fantastic energy and Good Looking Man Around Town is a 2 minute song more satisfying than many average 5 minute songs. To me though the real reason to get this is the addictive I Knew I Was Next.As a longtime Morrisssey fan since the Smiths I think it's one of his coolest songs. If you're a Morrissey fan or even if you're not don't let this 4 song ep slip by!

4 out of 5 stars back on track!.......2006-04-08

"You Have Killed Me" is a great song and a real grower. upon first listen, i wasn't overly impressed...but i liked it okay. by the third listen, it was permanently fixed in my head. which is a sign of a good pop song. it's a very simple tune that matches Morrissey's beautiful croon with flattering effect.

Moz's love for The New York Dolls has never been a big secret so it's surprising that it took this long for him to cover one of their songs on record. he's been known to use "Subway Train" as a segway to other songs in the live setting and here "Human being" sounds great. and it's nice to hear Boz on sax again.

"I Knew I Was Next" is another very solid entry to the Ringleader b-sides. featuring a hooky chorus and a very strong vocal melody, and a cool 60's hammond organ popping up in the refrain, giving it a quick garage band sound. overall, the track shares a similiar sound to that of the Maladjusted b-side "I Can Have Both." great.

i have two (minor) gripes about this cd. one, the promotional sticker on the front of the cd case states that there is a fold-out poster included inside. which is surely not the case. there is a picture of Morrissey inside the cd insert...but that is not a poster! and must these kinds of stickers be stuck directly on the case? why do record pressing plants do this? errr...bugs me. just stick it on the shrink wrap, not the case. so, that's my second gripe. but these are complaints regarding the packaging, not the actual music.

oh, yea, there's a video on here too. Morrissey's strong point has never been videos, but thankfully , this is a pretty good one. enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Worth it.......2006-03-30

Well worth the money for these 3 non-album b-sides. Human Being is the strongest but they are all worth while.

"It's just human beings being human // Not sure what they're doin' // Tryin' to do the best they can..."
The whole album is filled with gems like that. This is positively one of the most underrated albums in country music.
Whether you like inspirational songs like the title track "Being Human", slow and easy songs like "Somethin' 'Bout a Sunday", or jammin' outlaw country like "Stomp" this album has something for you!

5 out of 5 stars New country fan in Louisiana.......2000-07-13

I bought Michael Peterson first CD and fell in love with country music. Now thats all I listen to. Michael second CD "Being Human" is one of the best I've heard. If I had to pick one number it would be very hard, there's not on cut on this CD that I would skip over, but my favorite is "Two of the Lucky Ones". If people would listen to these beautiful words, they would fall in love all over again. Michael has a way of showing you through his songs a way to his heart. If you buy any CD in the future I recommend this one, it is the best.

I have always been a huge Michael Peterson fan, but I never thought that anyone can ever accomplish an album better than his debut, until someone did. It was Michael Himself! His sophomore album, "Being Human" is wonderful. This album is about being human, it's about living and loving and having a great time in the process. And this is not just my opinion.A friend of mine listened to this album. She was not a country fan before..she is now. I was in an art class and the teacher suggested we bring our own music. When it was my turn, I played Michael Peterson's "Being Human" CD and before long, people were asking me who that is. If there was one album worth getting this year, this would be the one

Fourteen track compilation pretty much for the completists only. Not a bad collection,it's just that many long-time MC5 fans will likely already have most,if not all these cuts.Several that I liked best were the heavy rocker "Looking At You","Rama La Fa Fa Fa",the studio out-take for "American Ruse" and the 19-minute epic, drawn out "I'm Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver".Semi-recommended.However,I would first listen to sound clips off this disc where ever you could find some, then make your decision from there.

4 out of 5 stars Great One Disc Album.............2005-03-21

However the release of the new "Purity, Accuracy" 6 cd box renders this album pretty much obsolete. The music here is great and the sound quality is very good; but most, if not all, the tracks here are included in the box set. If you already own all the official releases, as well as the "Big Bang: Best Of" album, my advice would be to take a pass here and save your bucks for the "Purity" box. If you're on a tight budget and just need more MC5, then this release will satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars Brothers & Sisters, the MC5!.......2003-02-28

Everyone is familiar by now with the legendary legacy of the MC5. As agit-prop band for the White Panther Party, they smashed the unstated taboo against an overt political stance within a rock 'n' roll framework. Subsequent bands like Clash, the D.K.'s, and R.A.T.M. owe much to these trailblazers.
My husband, who was down with the White Panthers when he was a kid, points to this collection as perhaps the best from the John Sinclair archives. I agree. Certainly the sound is far better than usual, with some terrific live outtakes from Jams. I Believe To My Soul is a standout, along with the alternate M.C. Is Burning and the J.B. medley. The rantings of W.P.P. "spiritual advisor" Jesse Crawford are much appreciated, including his support of the Zenta Commandments...
White Panther Chairman John Sinclair is present for some stoned saxophone ramblings on the crazed improv I'm Mad Like Eldridge Cleaver. Remember Eldridge from the good old days when he was the eloquent Minister of Info for Black Panther Party before he lost his mind and became a born-again Republican? At any rate, this is a solid collection for fans of this great band, and stands as an excellent companion piece to their three classic albums.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better postumous MC5 releases........2002-06-11

The problem with these rarities compilations of the MC5 and the Stooges is they usually just coast on the band's legend while releasing [poor] quallity live recordings and demos. The new MC5 retro is a rare exception. While it may not be as essential as "Babes In Arms" this one does have excellent quallity out takes & altrernitive takes from "KIck Out the Jams"! That same show produced a cover of Ray Charles' "I believe to my soul" which, up until now, has not even been availible as a bootleg! (Other outkates from "Jams" not yet availible are "looking at you", "black to comm" and Screamin' Jay's "I put a spell on you.") Also, you get the alts of "Moter City's burnin'" and "rama lama fa faf fa". The rest of the CD is more or less the usual mediocer stuff usually associated with comps like these but die hard MC5 fans (like myself) will want this for the "Jams" outtakes. You'll be so pleased with those you'll forgive the rest of the album.

I have to be honest, I didn't understand what SEAL was talking about in his lyrics until the 4th or 5th time I heard the entire CD. It's amazing how he can creatively describe the love God has for the world, people, and even how God has touched SEALhenry's life. The lyrics also describe our relationship with God concerning prayer, our attitudes, and how we view life. The beautiful and melodious tunes give his vocals a wonderful compliment. Awesome job SEAL!!!!! This is a CD worth recommending to anyone interested in music that is powerful, soft, and moving.

3 out of 5 stars KIM MITCHELL goes "pop"!.......2002-04-11

SHAKIN' was KIM MITCHELL's attempt to go mainstream. It's a
very synthesizer laden album and very poppy. I think about half
the album is very listenable...and the other half rather for-
gettable. I can't even remember the song titles of the songs I
dislike! PATIO LANTERNS was, in my opinion, a very bad choice
as a leadoff single. It's one of the corniest songs KIM MITCHELL
and PYE DUBOIS ever wrote together and probably a big disappoint-
ment for those who bought his previous album for GO FOR A SODA.
GET LUCKY is a terrific hard rock song, with a great guitar solo
from MITCHELL.THAT'S THE HOLD is another catchy hard rock song
with a very singalongable refrain.Either of these songs would
have been excellent choices as lead off singles. Other tracks I
liked were ALANNA LOVES ME, IN MY SHOES and HITTING THE GROUND.
The rest of this is either too synth heavy or too mellow or too
poppy or all of the above at the same time! Still worth buying,

As a long standing Kim Mitchell fan, this is his best offering. There is not a dud song on this album. A great mix of ballad-like songs and toe tapping rock beats. Kim is a genius guitar player and this album is a classic. If you ever have a chance to catch him in concert don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Canada's finest!!.......1999-10-23

It's a great shame that this CD isn't currently available as it contains one of Kim's greatest songs, "Hitting the Ground". Buy it if you can!!

5 out of 5 stars One man band!.......2005-11-02

I first heard James' music in 1999, when I was introduced to it by my boyfriend, who had known James and seen him play around the central California region in the 70's. It wasn't long before I was hooked.

This CD is something akin to sitting in on a master class, especially if you're a musician or ever hope to be one. Having seen James live on several occasions, I can tell you this CD comes as close as any recording could to capturing the complexity, the nuance, and the intimacies that James casts upon anyone fortunate enough to have heard him in person. He possesses a personal charisma and depth that are allowed to shine here, as it is simply the man and his guitar.

His guitar playing is utterly unique. I've never heard another like him. He voices chords much like I've always thought James Taylor did--more like a piano than a guitar. But James' style is uniquely his own; full and rich and rhythmic...even orchestral. He just doesn't need a band, because all of the necessary elements are there in his fingertips.

Then there is his voice. Delicate and subtle, he can also cut right through you and make you like it. He can damage you and heal you. He can hang a note on a cloud and you just want to go there with it. Mostly, you just shake your head and ask yourself "How'd he do that?"

If this is all sounding a bit too visceral, all I can say is you just have to hear it for yourself. Then you will be, like so many others who have heard him, another fan of this extraordinarily gifted man.

Check out James Lee Stanley's collaboration with John Batdorf on an acoustic compilation of Rolling Stones songs entitled "All Wood And Stones." 'Just Vocals and guitar, with rythmic strumming creating the sole persussive effects -- beautiful work (available on Amazon).

This is a remarkable album...Probably the best singer/guitarist you never heard of.

5 out of 5 stars Great "back to basics".......2002-03-18

Like a lot of his fans, I heard of James Lee Stanley through his long time friend, Peter Tork. When I heard that ex-Monkee, Peter Tork, was still playing after thirty years, I decided to check out his current musical act with Stanley. Although I really went to see Tork, I was blown away by his musical partner, Stanley. This led me to purchase this CD.

As so much contemporary pop/rock is doctored by electronic studio wizardy, we sometimes forget how wonderful it is to hear great singing to pretty melodies. "Freelance Human Being" allows us to remember. The CD is Stanley singing original (mostly love) songs accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. The result is some beautiful, albeit not ground breaking, music. You will find yourself singing along in no time. Great "rainy day" music! James Lee Stanley's music should be more widely heard.

4 out of 5 stars A solid follow-up to H'om........2001-04-17

Kevin Richey ditches the sitar and exotic influences this time out, in favor of a more straight-ahead country rock sound. That the man known as Bingo writes and sings more convincingly than his aspiring alt-country kin is what makes this album better than 90% of what gets reviewed in No Depression. Richey's covers of Dock Boggs, The Holy Modal Rounders, Elizabeth Cotten and Stephen Foster are top-drawer, too. More banjo would have earned Bingo that fifth star. Fans of the legendary Michael Hurley would be well served to fess up their credit cards for this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Eccentric.......2003-01-30

That is in my opinion the best album of the New York Dolls. Many great songs are represented: „Hoochie Coochie Man", „Great Big Kiss", „Babylon", „Pirate Love" and „Jet Boy". The band has a rough energy, which will be a pleasure to every punk rock fan (Malcolm McLaren, the manager of the Sex Pistols, was previously for a short time the manager of the New York Dolls). Also the follow-up band The Heartbreakers is highly recommendable.

    4 out of 5 stars Another re-packaging.......2002-07-23

This is yet another re-release of the same material we have all heard. However, it isn't bad. The second half of the CD is material that was released as 'Red Patent Leather', the sound is pretty sketchy, but it is a good example of later period Dolls, when things were beginning to fall apart. The first half of the CD is material from something I can't think of right now. The sound is good, but David's vocals are too high in the mix. IF you don't have a lot of the bootleg stuff that goes around, this is a good buy. It does give you an idea of what the Dolls were about live. If you have a good collection, don't get fooled thinking this is new material like I did.
