Great album.......2007-01-20
A classic Mac Wiseman album from 1966 (with country band).......2007-01-02
Mac Wiseman was born on May 23, 1925. He hails from Crimora, Virginia but lives on Percy Priest Lake, near Nashville. He was born in 1925, the same year the Grand Ole Opry started. In 1944, Mac began his career as a DJ in in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1946, he worked with Molly O'Day, then in 1948 an original member of Flatt and Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, and then in 1949 with Bill Monroe. From 1952-1956, Mac with his band "The Country Boys" recorded several hits for Dot Records including "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," "Love Letters in the Sand," "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." From 1957-1963, he was an A & R man (Artists and Repertoire) for Dot Records and ran the company's country-music department. While at Dot, he was instrumental in the success of Pat Boone's career. It was Mac who suggested that Pat record the song "Love Letters in the Sand" which became a smash hit for the young singer. In 1958, Mac one of the founders of the Country Music Association (CMA) and its first secretary. In 1965, he performed at the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia. In 1966, Mac managed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. That was the year that he recorded this album for Uncle Jim's Rural Rhythm Records. He was in fine country voice for songs that also include some uncredited accompaniment with drums, jew's harp, Dobro, harmonica, autoharp, electric bass, and others.
In more recent time, Mac's kept busy with music. In 1990, he was elected president of R.O.P.E. (Reunion of Professional Entertainers) in Nashville. One of the goals of the organization is to build a retirement home for country music entertainers. In 1991, he worked at the revived Old Dominion Barn Dance, Richmond, Virginia.
In 1992, he worked at the Willie Nelson Theatre in Branson, Missouri. In 1993, Mac was inducted into the IBMA's Hall of Honor. In 1997, he recorded with "The Groove Grass Boyz." In 2001, Wiseman recorded a duet with his old friend Johnny Cash: "When It's Reveille Time in Heaven."
Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic country sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes .......2007-01-02
Producer Lee Sutton was the visionary who captured the music of the legendary J.E. Mainer, an "unabashed, unreconstructed, unapologetic old-time musician," according to one of Richard Spottswood's reviews in an early issue of Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. Although he had recorded earlier, Mainer's output had dropped off in the 50s and early-60s. Beginning in 1967, twenty volumes of his music were released over the course of just a few years. In Rural Rhythm's extensive J.E. Mainer archive, Volume 20 (RR-250) has material drawn from his earlier albums, but they also included alternate takes and were put out in stereo. They also had his down-home fiddling, and his singing and banjo work impart more good-time hilarity than anyone since Uncle Dave Macon. We sincerely appreciate the legacy that Uncle Jim, producer Lee Sutton, and musician J. E. Mainer have left us. Uncle Jim had the foresight to realize he was recording an important old-time musician whose years were limited and whose musicianship was intact. An immeasurably wealthy body of familiar and not so familiar tunes.
Mainer's earlier releases were unquestionably his best. He sang and played fiddle. He worked with many of the same personnel who had recorded on King and Arhoolie. Sound quality was good. Later, quantity seemed to become the main goal although all of the sessions produced some good music. Others who worked with J.E. included Earl Cheek (bass), Jerry Cheek washboard), Bill Deaton (guitar), Danny Milhon (Dobro), and Morris Herbert (banjo, vocals) who eventually came to be featured more than J.E. on the later albums. J.E. Mainer died in June, 1971 before a scheduled appearance at a festival in Culpepper, Va.

Should be required listening for those studying or desiring 1950s/60s bluegrass.......2007-01-02
Virginia-born mandolinist Earl Taylor worked with Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and many others during a long career dating back to the 1940s. Earl Taylor formed the Stoney Mountain Boys about 1958. They were the first bluegrass band to perform at New York's Carnegie Hall (1959) as part of the "Folksong '59" show promoted by Alan Lomax. In 1964, Earl recorded an album "Blue Grass Taylor-made" on Capitol Records with his new band, "The Blue Grass Mountaineers."
Earl joined up with guitarist Jim McCall, and their Rural Rhythm releases should be required listening. Originally released in 1967, this album (produced by Lou Ukelson) illustrates the consistently high quality music that this band was producing. Volumes 2 & 3 (RR-242 and 243) were put out in 1971. The band subsequently went onto the Vetco label and put out "The Bluegrass Touch" (Vetco-3017) in 1974 and "Body and Soul" (Vetco-3026) in 1977.
On "20 Bluegrass Favorites," Earl (lead vocals, mandolin) and Jim (vocals, guitar) are accompanied by Tim Spradlin (banjo) and Charles Haskins (bass). Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. It's an immeasurably wealthy body of familiar tunes, all of which are still played today by bands on stage and bluegrass musicians in jam sessions. Don't expect to hear 3- or 4-part vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Obscure songs that songcarriers may want to check out.......2007-01-02
Produced by Lee Sutton (the same visionary who captured the music of the legendary J.E. Mainer), this album captured the sound of the coffee-drinking nighthawk Lee Moore, and Ohio native who plunked guitar and sang. Lee is backed up by Tater Tate (fiddle), Billy Edwards (banjo), John Palmer (bass), and Danny Milhon (Dobro). As part of Rural Rhythm's archive, Uncle Jim O'Neal liked to offer 20 tracks on the LPs originally issued. This album was originally released in 1968 entitled "Everybody's Favorites," and it was Lee's second project for Rural Rhythm label. Unfortunately, many of the tunes have similar tempos, melodies, and the set comes across as rather banal. However, Lee's big popular hit "The Cat Came Back" is included, and he also had an affinity for other novelty tunes like "She's Some Daisy for 19 Years Old," about a woman who's actually 90. Lee and the band also do a nice job on a ¾-time song like "When Mother Played the Organ."
For CD, the music's been remastered. Liner notes are included from Barry Willis, author of "America's Music: Bluegrass." Born in 1914, Lee was a well-liked deejay on WWVA out of Wheeling, W.V. whose show aired at 2 A.M. from 1953-69. Insomniacs and long-haulers were a large part of his audience. Even after retiring from his radio show, he continued playing WWVA's Jamboree until 1973.
If interested in Moore's obscure songs heard in the 50s and 60s, check out his favorites. Some of them (e.g. "Streamlined Cannonball") might have potential for songcarriers to revive for the 21-st century. Lee also especially liked folk songs that told stories like "Strawberry Roan." Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. Just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Reno & Harrell originally released these 20 short cuts in 1967 .......2007-01-02
Guitarist Bill Harrell played and sang with banjo-player Don Reno for over a dozen years, and Don Reno kept the Tennessee Cut-ups together until his death in 1984. "20 Bluegrass Favorites" is a great introduction to his band's music that was very well received at the time. Don't expect elaborate arrangements or clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic bluegrass sound of yesteryear. Don Reno's banjo break on "Footprints in the Snow" is worth the budget price of this album alone. There's in fiddle in the mix, and the choruses are just sung as duos. While Ronnie Reno plays mandolin, there aren't many breaks from him here. George Shuffler plays bass. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
