On the Bandstand captures Buck Owens on the verge of stardom. "Act Naturally" was poised to hit number one; the band he calls simply "the boys" was about to become the Buckaroos. Owens's trademark Bakersfield sound is already in evidence: edgy, electrified honky-tonk spurred by Don Rich's driving Fender Telecaster guitar. Lots of covers here, including numbers by Mel Tillis, Willie Nelson, and Harlan Howard, as well as an old Leadbelly tune ("Cotton Fields") and the not-yet-a-total-chestnut "Orange Blossom Special." On the Bandstand also comes with two bonus tracks, duets Owens recorded with honky-tonk princess Rose Maddox around the same time. It would take a serious twangphobe not to like this record. --Mary Park

5 out of 5 stars Groove Holmes at his best.......2004-10-04

This CD is a masterpiece, I was not aware that Groove Holmes was that good. The swinging is there all the time. This is really my taste of organ jazz at its best, I am a beginner in the field myself. The fellow musicians, Gene Edwards on guitar and George Randall on drums, have a perfect timing and are apparently also very inspired on this recording from 1966. I rate this one as a reference together with Jimmy Smith's "The Master" and "The Master II" from 1993 and the swedish master Pierre Sward's "Organ Jazz'n Soul" from 1993.

2 out of 5 stars Tears to the Eyes.......2004-09-17

I have not owned any Groove albums, but I heard one track on the radio, and then I sampled the tracks on this album. This live stuff is raw, energized, soulful, gritty, down home true Hammond B3. From what I can tell on these short samples, these tracks are not befogged in a stew of corny 60's and 70's "progressive" crap... and so much the better! I'm ordering it now, to go with my other B3 stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Gentlemen, start your engines!.......2004-06-20

Wow, Groove's on form for this one.
He's keepin' it really real.

It sounds like he's been listening to a lot of early Jimmy Smith and the energy is incredible.
He plays some nice tunes too.

This is one to get. A thrilling document of how it was back in the day, back in the club.

4 out of 5 stars Off the tracks........2004-05-31

I've never been a big Holmes' fan--his registrations in the post-Jimmy Smith era seemed awfully retro and restricted at a time when Charles Earland and Larry Young were coming up with new sounds and McGriff was at least mixing them up. Moreover, Groove's bass lines were no match for Big John Patton's or Donald Patterson's. On the other hand, I've never heard a lounge organist go after it like Holmes does on this "live" session, recorded at Basie's Harlem night club in the late 60's. The tempos are furiously, even insanely, fast on both "Indiana" and "Rifftide," and Groove plays chorus after chorus like a man possessed--or a demon on speed.

Although no train wreck occurs, you can't help but feel some sympathy for the drummer, George Randall, who falters but finishes. The rhythmic feel reminds me of "Bags and Trane," a session on which Connie Kay is always slightly behind the beat set by bassist Paul Chambers. I was rooting for Randall all the way, long after he'd abandoned the pointless task of trying to locate his hi-hat on the off-beats. This is Groove's groove, and he's strong enough to insure that he has his way. It's also at once exhilarating and punishing music, the relentless and merciless groove of a killer player. I can't take too much of it at a sitting, and I don't dare put it on while my wife is in the house. This is music for the big boys, best saved for a night on the town.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01

This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Buck Owens.......2007-05-26

Once this CD starts spinning you won't want it to stop. Some excellent tunes by a truely amazing artist. The steel guitar work is some of the best and would leave a hole in the music if it wasn't there. No collection of country music is ever complete without Buck Owens sitting at the very top.

4 out of 5 stars You can't pick very much cotton........2005-08-13

This album marked the beginning of a pattern that would characterize most of Buck's LPs throughout his peak years of sixties' stardom. Each album would feature several Buck solo performances mixed with numbers showcasing the rest of his band, vocally and instrumentally. Only one of Buck's hit singles was on the album: "Kickin' Our Hearts Around", a song Wanda Jackson had written specifically for him. Over half of the album features cover versions of other artists' material. Buck sings lead on seven songs, with Don Rich singing two leads, Kenny Pierce singing one lead, and two instrumentals. The CD adds two bonus duets between Buck and Rose Maddox. This is a solid CD that should appeal to Buck's fans.

4 out of 5 stars +1/2 -- Super collection of early Owens honky-tonk.......2003-10-17

Despite the title and cover photo, this isn't a live album. Instead, the title suggests the collection of songs as representative of Owens' stage show circa 1962-63. The song list combines several Owens originals (both solo and co-writes), along with some contemporary hits of others, and a few more adventurously picked covers. It's a rousing set, filled with hot fiddle and weepy steel playing, and Owens brilliant voice front-and-center. By the time this album was released, the band was already climbing to chart fame with "Act Naturally," but at the time of recording, they were on the verge, just about to break into the clear.

Though Don Rich was still heavily focussed on playing fiddle, his electric leads shows off the sting that would spearhead the Bakersfield Sound. Similarly, Owens doubles his own vocals on a few tracks, but he and Rich spark up their remarkable harmonies on several others. Ralph Mooney's steel (especially on "I Can't Stop (My Lovin' You)") and Rich's fiddle (especially the winding line on the Owens/Red Simpson penned "King of Fools") are like a twangy call-to-arms against the smooth sounds then emanating from Nashville.

The band finds plenty of space for their musical talents, including an instrumental arrangement of the Ray Price ballad, "Release Me," with superb, flowing interplay between Jay McDonald's steel and Rich's fiddle. Rich gets an even brighter spotlight for his tone and technique on a cover of "Orange Blossom Special," and takes a solo vocal spin on Howard Harlan's "Sally Was a Good Old Girl." Owens and Rich work their signature harmonies on several tunes, including Mel Tillis' "Saw Mill," Leadbelly's "Cotton Fields," and John D. Loudermilk's "Diggy Liggy Lo."

Wanda Jackson's honky-tonk tune, "Kickin' Our Hearts Around" (written expressly for Owens, and sung in his finest drawl), was the only hit single originally included on this album. The rest of the album's tracks, generally not over-anthologized, presents new ground for many Owens enthusiasts. Varese's reissue adds both sides an Owens/Rose Maddox single as a bonus, the hit version of "Sweethearts in Heaven" (an earlier version, sung by Owens and Rich, is included as an original album track) and its flip, "We're the Talk of the Town."

5 out of 5 stars Buck at his Best.......2000-11-04

Buck is simply at his best on this CD. It is awesome from start to finish. "Touch Me" is the slowest of all the songs. "Saw Mill" has some very corny lyrics, but Buck makes it work. I never could stand "Diggy Liggy Lo", but now I love it after hearing Buck sing it. Don't miss out on this CD. It will become one of your most treasured CD's.

This is a good album, though not a classic. Especially fun are "Hello, Mr. Kringle" that ought to get a chuckle out of anyone, and "Waht are You Doing New Year's Eve?" The other songs are alright.

        5 out of 5 stars Worth 10 Stars.......2001-08-22

This is a wonderful collection that leaves you wanting more. I'm in my mid-40s & have enjoyed the music of the 30s & 40s for as long as I can remember. You don't have to be from the Greatest Generation(anyone that lived through The Depression & WW2)to appreciate these holiday hits. So many great bands are on here, such as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Harry James, Kaye Kayser, Les Brown, etc. and all do a terrific job in making merry music for your Christmas celebrations. If only there were a 2nd volume to add to this. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic vintage Christmas music.......1999-12-30

One of the best vintage collections ever. If you are from this era it will bring back great memories...if you aren't, it will make new ones and be a real conversation piece at your holiday parties. Highly recommend.
