The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall," "You Do," "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous (though they cut down the degrees of separation between them and Mann to an incredible one!). However, for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic songwriting, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Mann....Oh Mann..........2007-04-25

This review refers to the soundtrack of "Magnolia"(CD)
see below for link to the film score

"Magnolia" was a one of a kind film. Not only for it's amazing cast, unique story and great filming, but the soundtrack is one that will touch you to your very core. Aimee Mann's words and music are stirring, and tell a story of life that is so relateable, that P.T. Anderson wrote the screenplay based on her works, all the different character stories that converge stemming from the character of Claudia. Don't worry though, if you are fan of Mann, but have not seen this film, this is an album that stands on it's own. One that you will never seem to get enough of.

The CD has 13 tracks from the film, every one a winner. Most are written and performed(9 of the tracks) by Mann, and even the opening with "One" not written by Mann, she makes it her own with a fresh take and the mood is set. "Momentum", "Build That Wall" "Deathly", "Driving Sideways", and 'You Do" follow and the words and music have such feeling you cannot helped be touched by the story they tell. One of human emotions that you will either relate to or be touched by. "Nothing is Good Enough" is a fine instrumental, that needs no words. Mann's final two selections are 'Wise Up" and "Save Me". Supertramp adds their wonderful talents with "Goodbye Stranger", 'Logical Song" both excellent tunes that I find nice for drive time, as well as "Dreams" from Gabrielle" . The album closes with "Magnolia" from John Brion's superb score.

The CD sound is excellent. It comes with a booklet with some notes from P.T. Anderson, the songs and the words, and some film pix. Fans of the film can relive all the very human moments again and again, and if you weren't a fan of Aimee Mann before you will be now. Fans of Mann, will enjoy this album that is definitive of her muisc, her style and intuitiveness for saying what we may be feeling.

If you are looking for just the score(also marvelous on it's own), that is also available atMagnolia (Score to 1999 Film) (Score to 1999 Film). There are some excellent reviews there of the album. This soundtrack is also available here:Magnolia
so you can check both of these sites for best deals and availability.

I've written close to 1,000 reviews here and I don't think I've ever said this before..If I could go more then 5 stars I would, but it's true of this album.

I'll leave this with some words by Mann's "Save Me":

"You look like - A perfect fit -
For a girl in need - Of a tourniquet -
But can you save me -Come on and save me
if you could save me - from the ranks- Of the freaks
who suspect - they could never love anyone...."

Enjoy....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Magnolia Soundtrack.......2006-08-07

I love every song on this CD, Aimee Mann did a great job on the score. I would recomend this CD highly.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT.......2006-05-08

Aimmee Mann is an absolutely talented artist, and her contributions to Magnolia are of nothing less than what is to be expected of her. Each of her songs has its own taste, its own feel, and its own uniqueness to it. She definately doesn't try to overdo any of her songs on the popularity factor.
Don't get me wrong, the rest of the soundtrack is fantastic too. Hell, "Dreams" is now my top inspirational song of all time, yes, past the Rocky song "Eye of the Tiger."
If you're a fan of Aimee Mann, you have to have this album. If you liked the movie, you have to have this album. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the GREATEST soundtracks ever in history!!.......2006-03-07

"SAVE ME", was the oscar nominated song off this soundtrack.
it lost, unfortunately, to a forgettable cartoon monkey love song by phil collins from disney.
"Magnolia" told the story of 9 lives intertwined in one night.
very depressing, raw, and devistatingly real.
3 other songs you can find also from aimee mann's, "bachelor no.2" cd. an excellent piece of masterful writing as well as lyrical depth and sharpness. you won't find a better cd than this for a film. aimee tells it like it is.....and then some!

darndest marketing move since the infamous "black album" by spinal tap: the group name Songs: Ohia appears nowhere on the cd, outside or inside. oh well, i admire career self-sabotage as much as the next guy. the music itself is fantastic, and you can't help commenting on the obvious neil young and crazy horse influence. you really can't. plenty of striking melodies that float out and hang around the air emminate from this recording. lots of hypnotic mid-tempo stuff. good stuff. an all-around pleaser for the indie rock crowd. go ahead and get it.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite disc.......2006-08-17

I have had many "best disc of all time". Right now this disc holds that title.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Album.......2006-02-09

This album kicks ass. Sons:Ohia gets down to its southern roots with this amazing feat of musical genius.Throughout there are poetic lyrics, raunchy slide guitars and interesting arrangements. The album highlight is without a doubt "Farewell Transmission" where frontman Jason Molina orchestrates a seven minute southwestern anthem, spitting out such lyrics as "Some one must have set them up/ now they'll be working in the cold grey rock/ now they'll be working in the hot mill steam/ now they'll be working in the concrete," and "Mamma here comes midnight with the dead moon in his jaws/ must be the big star about to fall," and conducting multipart vocal harmonies. The rest of the album is solid to say the least,. This album is an easy transition from folk acts like Niel Young and Will Oldham as well as modern Southern rock groups like the Silver Jews. This is my favorite album right now, and it will be yours too. So buy this album. NOW!

5 out of 5 stars This album warms the cockles of my heart.......2005-11-16

I got into Jason Molina and co. through a friend who knew I had a soft spot for alt-country. I'm especially fond of Neil Young's earlier, more country tinged works ("Everybody Knows This is Nowhere," "Tonight's the Night," ect.). If you feel the same, read on...

Let me start by saying that this is some of the most well crafted, fluently beautiful music I've ever heard. From front to back, the songwriting and execution is immaculate: each instrument blooms into vivid harmony. Molina is an incredible song writer: the kind of lyrics that send shivers of joy down your spine. I'd really like to quote some of them for you, but I don't want to spoil it...everyone who's interested should just buy it and let it take you away.

    5 out of 5 stars Neverending Listening.......2004-08-31

I received this album, copied from a friend, about one or two years ago. I was in transition with moving and did not get to listen to it much. I brought it back out about 4 months ago, and I cannot stop listening to it. Over and over again. I never tire from it. No matter that there are two other voices on it besides Jason Molina's...they are beautiful. I will not communicate any musically descriptive words to describe this album, and I will not compare it to other singers. This album is truly on its own. You will not be disappointed.

...then go ahead and add this one to your Amazon shopping cart now! A friend took me to see this band and I was a fan from the first notes. 10 years later I look back with regret that these guys didn't get the radioplay and recognition that they deserved. This is one of the most underrated rock albums of the 90's. "Backwoods Travelin'" grabs you immediately with a funky southern groove reminiscent of the Allman Brothers...."Hello From Venus" and "Magnolia" are simply two of the best rock songs you haven't heard or haven't heard enough, period. Unfortunately these guys aren't together anymore. Our loss. Get this while it's still available!

5 out of 5 stars Deserted Island Good .......2005-11-18

This cd is a classic. The fact that it came out almost 10 years ago and I feel compelled to write about it today says alot. There really isn't a bad track on it, but I have to say my two favorites by far (in order) are Gypsey Lullaby and Hello From Venus. I can't really add much here that hasn't already been said in previous reviews because I agree with everything they express (except the one idiot who gave it 2 stars or the one who wines about too many vocal acrobatics - I can't disagree more, as I think the lead singer has such a unique voice that is so soulful, melodic and powerful.) The musicianship is off the charts and the vocals and lyrics are equally impressive and thoughtful. This one makes my deserted island must have list for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Screamin Cheatah Wheelies.......2004-11-11

This is a great rock group that didnt sell enough albums due to a lack of radio play and promotion. Fantastic album. Grass roots, word of mouth band that many people have missed out on. I have heard them clssified as "nothing more than a bar band". They are much more than that. This music rocks. It is so un-pretentious and real that you wont stop listening to it once you give it a spin. The song writing and musicianship is great. Trust me. If you like great rock music and want to impress your friends as well as find something that not everyone has, get into the Wheelies.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT ROCK CD.......2004-02-13

Almost all reviews are correct. Great classic rock that will stand the test of time. Great playing, outstanding songs and a great varity of material. MAGNOLIA is almost worth the price alone, but there really isn't one bad track on this CD. Just one thing spoils the fun to some extent and that's the singers total lack of subtlty. He obviously hates to be quite and it shows. Even when it isn't called for he fills all spaces available to him with over the top vocal stylings ( often totaly out of context with the song ). I have 2 SCW cd's and they both suffer from this affliction. These would both be 5 star offerings if they could quiten the singer down when he isn't required. Unfortunately I had to take this of the WIFE FRIENDLY list in my collection. She can't get past the singing to get to the very good bits. Looking at the very low 2nd hand prices, it seems other people have the same problem. If it wasn't for the singing this band would almost be guaranteed greater success.

With their third release, this female Louisiana quartet renews its commitment to traditional Cajun music as a vital part of contemporary culture rather than a musty museum piece. The musical (though not familial) sisters--founders fiddler Jane Vidrine and accordionist Ann Savoy, bassist Lisa Trahan Reed, and second fiddler Anya Schoenegge (the quartet's newest recruit)--share vocal leads and contribute harmony vocals and other instrumentation as well. Their spirited interplay turns both the traditional two-step of "Les Flammes d'Enfer (The Flames of Hell)" and Savoy's original "Magnolia Hop" into dance-floor romps, while the range of the selections extends from the balladry of "La Valse de la Vie (The Waltz of Life)" to the exquisitely a cappella "Ma Petite et Mignonne (My Little and Cute One)." Most of the lyrics are sung in Cajun French patios (with English translations in the liner booklet), until a Cajun-style revival of Little Richard's "Keep a Knockin'" brings the collection to a bilingual climax. The results sound like a cross between a bayou Fairport Convention and a feistier, female Beausoleil. --Don McLeese

Every Cajun band seems to have their own versions of the classics. This all ladies band's, hang with the best of them. What's a bit different? The title holds the clue,"Le Boogie Woogie." Think the big band era of the 1940s; though the Magnolia sisters is an average size Cajun Band, their playing of the Boogie Woogies hold up to the sound of those big bands and with the Cajun Flair. Also of note, they do Cajun Ballads and a couple are done acapella and have a very haunting presentation. I also recommend, this for any one the enjoys collecting various ethnic music.

Here's what's confusing: Jason Molina, main guy behind Magnolia Electric Co., was, in a previous incarnation, Songs: Ohia, which put out the widely praised 2003 disc Magnolia Electric Co . Regardless of what handle he's recording under, though—and there have been many—Molina's sound maintains a certain earthy, tumbleweeds-and-troubled-times integrity that doesn't appear to be winding its way toward beach blankets and sunny skies. On What Comes After the Blues, as on other efforts, there is a certain Neil Youngishness to the music that can't be ignored (dig into reading material on Molina and you quickly get the sense he'd prefer that it be ignored). But that's to its advantage. Where the late-90s indie rock brigade bulldozed their own mud-caked interpretations of Harvest-era folk into the ground, opening the door for the resurgence of retooled 80s pop, Molina's rotgut-steeped rock betrays a haunting! authenticity that won't soon lose its flavor. The gratifying opening guitar storm of first track "The Dark Don't Hide It," in fact, could fuel a real-rock turnabout on its own. --Tammy La Gorce

      Album Description

With 'What Comes After the Blues,' we enter a new era with Jason Molina. After seven full-length studio albums in as many years - each recorded using a revolving cast of players under the name Songs: Ohia - Molina has retired the name as well as his wayward days and settled in with a new, consistent cast of players. He has named this group Magnolia Electric Co., after his final Songs: Ohia album. Why now? Surely moving to Southern Indiana and finding a once-in-a-career band consisting of Pete Schreiner, Jason Groth, Mark Rice and Mike Kapinus had something to do with it.

Sonically, this isn't a huge departure from where Songs: Ohia was headed these past few years. The steel howls hauntedly, the guitars soar and crunch with verve, and the songs resonate with timelessness. Steve Albini's live-in-a-room, captured-as-it-was-played engineering technique is still a crucial player. Where we find the marked difference is in their confidence, as afforded by experience and trust in one another. These guys are talented, hardworking, and actually enjoy playing with one another - and you can hear it in their songs. As on the limited edition live album Trials & Errors, Magnolia Electric Co. know exactly what they are shooting for and hit it dead center with every attempt. This is not indie rock anymore. Magnolia Electric Co. have made a no-bullshit album that is both rocking and full of life…a fist-pumper that manages to hit great depths of beauty.

5 out of 5 stars One for the road.......2007-05-13

One thing that annoys me a bit about being a 30-something is how much great music I missed in the 60s and early 70s. Its not the same thing when someone tells you about as it is when you discover it for yourself. People told me about Tonight's the Night and Music From the Big Pink, but I discovered WCATB all by myself. I picked it up in a CD store and immediately dug the name, and the cover. The fantastic title was just the cherry on the cake. It was one of those CDs that just says: "I've been waiting for you". So when I took a listen to it and discovered that it was a) right up my dirty little street and b) recorded by Steve Albini, indie guitar god and now-famous producer, I just had to have it. WCATB is a real gem if you love 'folk rock' and hate that description in equal measure. I much prefer Cosmic American Music (with all due credit to Greil Marcus, who coined the phrase). If you are familiar with the likes of Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs and Will Oldham's Viva Last Blues, you'd better step to this pronto. Based largely around Jason Molina's tremulous vocals, with perfectly measured dabs of electric guitar, bass, drums and - oh, yes - piano adding to the atmosphere, it is another instalment in the fantastic road trip that began with The Band The Band. Travelling along that great cosmic highway, it spends a night at the Motel Tonight's the Night to be sure, but all those Neil Young comparisons really miss the point. MEC are their own thing, and they have considerable greatness in them. The companion piece to this - Fading Trails - is also superb, but I have even higher hopes for the future. If they can just sustain this level of genius for 45 mins plus, they will have something that is equal in stature to anything that was produced in the halycon days of rock music. Ease on down the road indeed.

...whose life can live up to the lie.

Every song is subtle and well crafted. The lyrics will break your heart. If you are looking for kick a** rock listen to Van Halen.

2 out of 5 stars Don't This Look Like The Dark..........2006-02-22

Seems like the Indie kids jumped on the bandwagon 1 album too late (or 2, if you count Trials & Errors.) Somehow Molina has lost that stark, focused, bleak energy that served him so well previously. Now what we're left with is a bland, boring, 80's bar-band solo act. Does anyone remember The Lioness? Those were good songs, delivered with all of the wrenching plaintiveness of a penetrating songwriter. Now we get a shallow, plunky, whiny, gloss version of what we used to love. I guess it's better than a lot of sh*t bands on their best days, but still a let down. And what's with everybody saying this is a "hard-charging rock" record? The only song with cajones is the opening track, the rest is a pallid imitation of a better time. And by now the Indie kids have moved on & the fans have either walked off or acquiesced to a lesser sound. Here's hoping Molina walks off alone into the woods & finds the real gloom again.

This is the first time I've been so moved my an album that I felt compelled to use this forum to give feedback about (and promote) an artist. Excuse me, Artist. This album is the first exposure I've had with Jason Molina's music, and if his previous efforts are half as moving, I'll be buying them soon enough.
He's dark he's brooding and it's beautiful. The cathartic, yet familiar tone of his compositions convey raw, palpable emotion. His self-awareness is also in evidence in wonderfully simple "Northstar Blues" and "Hard to Love a Man" with it's asiatic interludes. The brevity of the album doesn't bother me, if it were longer I believe it would dilute the emotive power. Simply put, Molina is one of the strongest songwriter's I've heard in a long time and definitely worth supporting.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty good roots rock!.......2005-06-06

I wasn't sure what to expect from this album, but I love it! Molina draws his inspiration from the classic, lonely sounds of Hank Williams and it shows, albeit in a more contemporary vein. Like the best moments of The Wallflowers, often better. My only wish is that it was longer than 8 tracks!

The Magnolia Sisters are not related by blood, instead they were drawn together by their common love for Cajun music. The five-member group includes Jane Vidrine; Tina Pilione; Lisa Trahan Reed; Ann Savoy, who is also a member of the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band; and Christine Balfa, who is the daughter of the famous Cajun fiddler Dewey Balfa. The Magnolia Sisters play a mix of songs and dance tunes that date from the early days of the Cajun presence in Louisiana in the 18th century to the first recorded examples of Cajun music from the 1920s. The Sisters are accomplished instrumentalists who play dance melodies such as Dennis McGee's "La La La La" and the Hackberry Ramblers' "Hé, Lá-Bas" with a subtly swinging rhythm that recalls an older style of Cajun music, before outside influences like honky-tonk country took hold. The CD's most powerful moments, though, come when Savoy and Vidrine put down their instruments and sing a cappella versions of the old songs "Le Pays des Estrangers" and "La Belle et le Capitaine." Their edgy, modal harmonies are simultaneously ancient and modern. --Michael Simmons

Chers Amis, having been the forth Magnolia Sisters CD that I have purchased, is the most bounciest of their albums. This one has more of that Cajun Dance music then the others that is presented in a basic and traditional manor; that I feel the Magnolia Sisters should be remembered for.

      5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Sisters.......2006-06-21

This work gives me a feel for genuine traditional music of my French ancestors via Arcadia and rejection by England, France, and the English colonies along the Atlantic. This is more than music, this is family, love, heart break, hard work, and identity. I can only understand a word or two, e.g., Bayou Teche, but this hardly matters compared to the voices, harmonies, and musicianship that transcend time and place. This is a CD to buy, listen to, and absorb in any language.

      Album Description

Jason Molina has lived in nine different locations and has had a dozen different backing bands on record in as many different recording environments. "Fading Trails" was recorded in four different studios. The essence of these recordings was extracted to create one cohesive being and thus defines what Magnolia Electric Co. truly is - something that's hard to define. One head, multiple bodies - the opposite of a hydra head.

This is the second MEC record I have bought (WCATB being the first). I'm already a huge fan. In my opinion, these guys deserve kudos equal to that which Will Oldham has enjoyed all these years. Except they are more consistent and have the decency to record their music in such a way that it is easy to hear, even on inferior equipment. Lo-fi schmo-fi. This is a superb companion to WCATB, which was one of my favourite LPs of 2006. If you're a fan of 'cosmic American music', I suggest you get into MEC pronto. They seem to tap into something which is entirely timeless, channelling The Band, Neil Young and the aforementioned Will Oldham in equal measures to provide a deeply satisfying listening experience that references nothing in modern music and is all the better for it. The only downside is this recording is a mere 28 minutes long. Hey dudes, how about a bit more content next time - they don't call it a Long Playing Album for nothing!

      4 out of 5 stars Worthy Addition.......2007-02-27

There is nothing earth-shattering here. Fans will recognize all of these songs because they are similar to songs on previous albums. That is perfectly fine with me. I believe I have all but two Songs: Ohia/Magnolia Electric Co. albums. I rank them as follows:

      Trials & Errors - Live
      The Lioness
      Didn't It Rain
      Hecla & Griper - EP
      Magnolia Electric Company
      Songs: Ohia
Hard To Love a Man - EP
      Fading Trails
      Ghost Tropic
      Axxess & Ace

I give "Axxess & Ace" 4 stars, so this is a good album by comparison. I also think this may be the best starting place (aside from the unreal but expensive live album) for those trying to figure out Molinascination than some of the albums I ranked above it. First reviewer covered the hi-lights. No reason not to own this album.

      4 out of 5 stars Fitting followup.......2006-09-14

I had somehow forgotten that this one was on its way when I spotted it on the store shelf yesterday. Took it home with a little trepidation; after all, one never quite knows what to expect from a Jason Molina album. Will it be soft and contemplative? Loud and wailing? Turns out Fading Trails is somewhere in the middle, i.e. just right. Molina has made a career of capturing the plaintive sound of the rust belt, and here it's no different. A lot of great and sad songs, accented by pedal steel and some nice lead guitar noodling. Highlights include Don't Fade on Me and Lonesome Valley. A suitable companion to the self titled album and What Comes After the Blues. Seek it out.

This album contains a masterful interpretation by the spectacular pianist Denver Oldham of the beautiful, important, and often forgotten piano works of R. Nathaniel Dett. Perfection of expression is the most accurate way I can think to describe Oldham's performances both recorded and live.
