With a voice that could crack the same cement he worked all his adult life, Roscoe Holcomb, along with Dock Boggs, Wade Ward, and Banjo Bill Cornett, was one of the most searing singers and pickers of the Appalachian banjo style. He performed mostly in Holiness Church services and impromptu square dances, and his style was never polished by an extensive professional career. His banjo playing is distinguished by speedy, irregular meter, and seems to mimic his vocal approach (or vice versa). First released in 1965, this John Cohen edited collection includes the well-known traditional cuts "Moonshiner" and "House of the Rising Sun," and is fleshed out by the guitar playing of Mike Seeger. --Roy Francis KastenAlbum Description
The legendary Roscoe Holcomb performs 21 powerful songs shaped by the hard times and conflict between old and new that marked his life in the Kentucky mountains. A hard-hitting singer and banjo-player, he also performs unaccompanied ballads, banjo and harmonica solos, and with a guitar. These recordings from 1961, 1964, and 1974 were previously released on three different Folkways LP records and had a powerful influence on the folk music revival. Accompanied by extensive new notes and photographs by John Cohen. 71 minutes. "Roscoe Holcomb is a true genius." -San Francisco ChronicleCustomer Reviews:
Real Americana.......2007-01-22
A must buy for fans of good music.......2005-08-26
Holcomb's vocals, particularily on the first track, give me goose bumps every time I hear it. His harmonica playing and banjo picking is distinctive and first rate. If you are a fan of older music, bluegrass, blues or country... BUY THIS CD!
Peculiar, Strange, Moving, and Powerful.......2003-07-22
I was wrong, about as wrong as a body could be. A couple of years later, I picked up the recording again and listened to it with care. The peculiar and high-pitched voice grows on you, and the powerful and honest delivery is moving in the most compelling way. I now think that Roscoe Holcomb stands on a par with Blind Willie Johnson (in his time an equally obscure and strange singer) as one of the greatest exponents of American-born and bred music. This recording grows on you. I'm extremely grateful that this legacy of Holcomb's great artistry has been preserved for those of us who did not have the joy of listening to his searing voice and delivery while he still lived.
Roscoe Holcomb: Beautiful Untamed Master.......2003-07-14
After many years of listening to the recordings of Roscoe Holcomb, of letting myself become intimately open to and familiar with them, of brooding upon them, then listening some more, I am convinced (conviction)that the true reason that Roscoe Holcomb has never become widely recognized and acknowleged in America as one of the greatest artists to ever live out some seventy odd years on its soil is not because he spent most of his life in the little backwoods community of Daisy, Kentucky where people have strange, unpleasant accents. Or rather I should say that that is only the apparent reason, the pretext. It is rather because wider American 'culture' can not embrace expression of such depth and intensity of unfiltered feeling, such depth of undecorated honesty, such depth and directness of response to life, such depth of raw, unpretentious beauty, such depth of blazing strength and haunted vulnerability, and such fierceness of unambitious artistic focus, without being intensely confronted by its own utter mediocrity.
American 'culture', which has been reduced to the hustling entertainment of an endless carnival, is tyranically controlled by capitalistic business interests and academic prejudice and pretension (backed by more capitalism). Its dominant characteristic on all levels is manipulation and self-interest. Its pseudo-passion is akin to simple lust. Roscoe Holcomb's genuine passion is a raw response to, and an unpretentious but fiercely focused hunger for, truth. He is a guileless, intelligent, aware, sensitive, gifted Kentucky 'hillbilly' who is far too large in soul to be drawn in by the smug, meretricious banality of American 'culture'. He is a grim and beautiful reminder of what wider America might have been.
As an artist and a man, he is indifferent to the illusions of 'civilized' high life, but he has no illusions about the facts of poverty and want. He is a mature, decent, gifted man trying to walk a truthful path through a bewildering maze, a man burning with life and love and suffering, and passionately confronting death and producing great art in response.
The art of his singing and playing, though clothed in Appalachian style, reaches beyond the conditioned behavior of any historical time-period, it reaches into primal emotion. He reaches into ancient, even primitve, feeling. But he is far from being unsophisticated. I am amazed by the people who claim to admire Holcomb, then submit to the terms of his critics by conceding that he is "unpolished, but...", or some such rot. Holcomb's musical knowledge, his vocal and instrumental ability, and his artistic imagination and insight are highly sophisticated and anyone who can not see this simply can not see Roscoe Holcomb. The fact that Holcomb was born in a setting that afforded him no "education' is utterly trivial and has no bearing on his artistic greatness. When, in his matchless version of LITTLE MAGGIE (UNTAMED SENSE OF CONTROL), he vocally holds that maj. 2nd (of all things!) as in the line:
low d o w n sorry man
he is being highly original and highly sophiticated. He knows exactly what he is doing, but he is not doing it for the sake of originality or sophistication, but for its artistic truth-value.
And Holcomb is quite capable of 'polish'. Listen to his beautiful mellow vibrato in his a capella version of MOONSHINER (THE HIGH LONESOME SOUND). If he usually gives his music a jagged edge it is because he has a conviction that it takes him closer to truth. I think here of another great and abused American artist, Herman Melville, who wrote:
"Truth uncompromisingly told will always have its jagged edges."
If you share this interest in truth then I would suggest that you get THE HIGH LONESOME SOUND and AN UNTAMED SENSE OF CONTROL and listen and listen and listen and learn about art and life from this master, burning intensely, though quietly, unambitiously, lost in the crowd.
Not bad.......2003-02-13

Product Description
From the D.C area artist hailed by The Washington Post as "a promising newcomer who's drawn comparisons to Bonnie Raitt" comes a follow-up release to her award-winning debut album, "Bendin' the Blues." Fans of Mason's electric blues-rock guitar work may be surprised to hear her "go acoustic," but those who have seen her as a solo opening act for Taj Mahal, Don McLean and other legends already know that she is equally at home in an acoustic setting. This album was nominated for the cross-genre Album of the Year award and won the Washington Area Music Association's 2001 "Best Blues Recording" award."Lonesome Is I," titled after the first line of the Mississippi John Hurt waltz, "Nobody Cares for Me," covers Mason's favorite acoustic country blues songs, plus a couple she penned herself. In addition to Hurt, Mason interprets the songs of blues legends Mance Lipscomb, Robert Johnson, Reverend Robert Wilkins and Blind Willie McTell. "Lonesome Is I" was recorded by award-winning producer and engineer Chris Biondo, known for his work with the late Eva Cassidy.
BLUES REVUE MAGAZINE (Hal Horowitz): "Melanie Mason's second album's title is an accurate description of the poignant songs within. Mason's supple guitar work is exemplary throughout. She slides and picks with an obvious understanding of the desolate qualities that make this music so timeless. 'Lonesome Is I' is a beautifully rendered album that expresses the sorrow, pain and the hopelessness long-gone bluesmen experienced."

Very entertaining mix of instruments, vocals and choice of songs.......2007-01-14
In Your Lonesome Town captures their live act very nicely. Sherry's special style of singing is fun to listen to. He uses his organ with a rythm, almost as if he tries to imitate a drum set. The only thing I hoped would be more prominent is the tuba. The instrument was an essential part of the concert I attended. It is heard on the CD but somehow a bit burried in the mix. But this is only a minor drawback. I love to listen to this CD in the car. Upbeat and great to sing a long. Highly reccommended for anybody who likes Bar Blues and doesn't mind some Swing and Jug Band influence.

I'm not buying it........oops I did, I wish I hadn't.
I read the reviews and it sounded pretty good but to my dismay it was far from good.
Maybe they needed help mixing it in the studio?! the vocals stick out like a sore thumb, maybe thats what they were going for but it doesn't work.
Apparently they're good live, I'd pay cover to see them but would not pay anymore on a CD.
I do like the ability to use a clarinet, tuba, kazoo and a jug.
Yes there's the Broonzy and Charlie Patten covers but they're nothing stellar.

E is incredible.......2005-10-05
Track number 9 is great. Has a perfect somber, desolate feel to it. Contrasted with track 14 which is uplifting and hopeful. I love scores to soundtracks and this soundtrack is filled with incredible songs. Tracks 9 and 14 are some of the best I have ever heard.
"Levity" soundtrack is would be a fine addition to your "E" collection........2005-08-04
Though not perfect, still an excellent piece of work.......2004-02-06
Correct. Don't get me wrong - there are a few downsides to the album, most notably the length (pay this much for under 35 minutes of music?) and only two Eels songs, but it really is worth it. "What I Remember Most" is a haunting opener, which faintly recalls Belle & Sebastian's work with Todd Solondoz's "Storytelling" soundtrack. The instrumentals are short, pretty, but establish the effective mood RIGHT AWAY, something not many other scores can do. The latter suites that close the album are undeniably moving.
The two Eels songs, both under 3 minutes, are worthwhile in themselves. While the acoustic "Skywriting" is extremely worthy, it's "Taking A Bath In Rust" that steals the show, with it's soft-loud scratchy-voicings and the lush & memorable string arrangement that follows. It's amazing it wasn't a single, because it easily could have charted.
Again, it isn't perfect. Some of the "themes" are recycled too oft, but again, it's a minor complaint to a great work. It's not the greatest soundtrack ever made, but it's a very worthy entry into that "indie-rock soundtrack" subgenre, and an enjoyable one at that.
Amazing.......2003-11-02
Brief songs, somber instrumentals, beautiful simplicity.......2003-10-28

Album Description
Nominated for two W.C. Handy Awards in "Best Acoustic Blues Album" and "Best New Artist Debut" categories, Mark Lemhouse's debut release delivers string-strangling, gut-rocking blues ecstasy. Lemhouse reaches into a wicked toolbox - containing resonator chainsaw, electric tube-amp machete, and bottleneck auger - to uproot blues tradition with a vandal's glee.Recorded to analog tape with vintage mics at Easley/McCain Studios in Memphis, Big Lonesome Radio has a gritty feel that's more akin to a Howlin' Wolf or Jimmy Reed than a young man playing the blues in the 21st century has a right to sound.
Melding together influences from Delta blues, Piedmont rag-style forms, and North Mississippi trance blues, Lemhouse's notes come across like crackling radio transmissions from a time gone by.
Customer Reviews:
Freshest I've heard in a long time..........2004-03-19
Lemhouse kicks it off with a fantastic version of Tampa Red's "Can't Get That Stuff No More." The production has a nice vintage sound to it. The original doesn't have bass or drums and this updated version has great accompaniment work, perfect for this song. Lemhouse's vocals have just the right amount of growl.
Many of these tunes are pretty traditional even if he does crank it up and distort it at times or by adding other instrumentation. Many of these songs were solo pieces in their original form but Lemhouse keeps the accompaniment sparse and tasty.
Some covers on the disc seem to be perfectly suited for Lemhouse, though you wouldn't think so to look at the titles. A testament to Lemhouse's ability to translate a song. Notable is a rip-roarin' version of Tom Waits, "No One Can Forgive Me But My Baby" and a rockabilly tune by Charlie Feathers, "One Hand Loose".
If you think rockabilly on reso is out of left field, listen to Jealous Moon and Edwin's Lament. This is where it starts to get weird, in a good way, when he starts swinging a song or two and one of them is even a Tango.
Some of the strongest songs on this CD are Lemhouse's own compositions, including Edwin's Lament and Electra 225.
This is just a great blues effort. Somehow it's bare bones and at the same time it has a very big sound. Mostly guitar, bass and drums, this disc is just raw blues. It swings, it jams and Lemhouse really knows how to play slide guitar. Buy it!
