High-energy female country quintet.......2004-03-15

This talented group recorded three albums of which this was the first. The members were Wanda Vick (electric guitar, fiddle, dobro, pedal steel, lap steel, mandolin, lead acoustic guitar), Pam Gadd (lead vocals, harmony vocals, banjo, acoustic guitar), Pam Perry (second lead vocals, harmony vocals, mandolins, acoustic guitar), Nancy Given Prout (Drums, harmony vocals), Kathy Mac (bass, harmony vocals).

Their music was mainly up-tempo, with the only ballads being Where did we go wrong and Teach me how to say goodbye. Those two sad songs provide a contrast with the good-time music that dominates this album. Among the more typical tracks, I particularly like Breaking new ground, Go down swinging, On the bayou and Easy to say hard to prove, but every track here is entertaining. The closing track is an instrumental, co-written by Nancy and Wanda.

It may be that Wild Rose were hoping to follow the example of Highway 101 but for whatever reason, their music did not sell. At least we can give Capitol credit for allowing them to record three albums before giving up on them.

If you enjoy good-time country music, you should enjoy this album.

Masterful Introduction to an Underappreciated Star.......2005-08-06

This album is my used album find of the year. That's really saying something considering the amount of time I spend scouring the bargain bins for cheap jewels. I bought this album for $2 about two months ago. I had no idea who Leni Stern was when I bought it. I just happened to notice that Bill Frisell and David Sanborn played on some cuts so I figured it was worth $2 bucks to take a listen. I can't put into monetary terms what this album is really worth, all I can tell you is that I listen to it constantly. Recollection is an anthology of Stern's work from 1986 to 1998 and contains both instrumentals and vocal tunes. Her style is smooth yet sonically challenging jazz. There's something about it that is very New York in the same way that Lou Reed's music is and Jim Jarmusch's films are. Highlight cuts for me include "Richie," "Something is Wrong in Spanish Harlem" and "Wondering Why." In an age when every vocalist seems to want to create an aria out of every single note, Leni's vocals are an understated and intimate treasure. I look forward to exploring the rest of her recorded material.

Bountiful Blessings with This Album.......2004-09-27

A little background info:
I really enjoyed getting "The Gospel Slide (JAM)" cd-single. Seeing Edward "Get Down" Crosby on the remix was really awesome. Then I discovered that Dana actually had a hand in some of the hottest house records that I have in my collection, particularly "Brighter Days" - Dajae, "For You" - Dana (herself), "Do Me A Favor" - Dana w/ Big Ed, and "Now I Know"/"He's The Man" - Blak Beat Niks

Now to the present:
I can't describe the joy I felt seeing this album's availability. I knew it was coming and I tell you that it was well worth the wait! Every song on the album is just superb! Seeing Maurice on the remix tip was great as well. There is enough range on this album to satisfy every dancing urge. But, perhaps the best part of the package is the demonstration video for the Gospel Slide; now you can add these steps to your line dancing repertoire! Once again Chicago talent shines right through. The album is a blessing-I just wish I could give it more stars!!!

This CD is Awesome. Dana shows us not only how to be a Christain and have fun, but she also shows us how to utilize the weapon of praise against the enemy with the Gospel Slide. If you are looking for the Urban Contemporary experience, this CD is one to get.
