Though it follows a standard movie formula and predictable plot twists, the film Hope Floats is saved in part by the above-average performance of Sandra Bullock, portraying a separated woman who finds her way back to her hometown in Texas, daughter in tow. The soundtrack seems to follow in due course, a collection of country and rock (thanks to the Rolling Stones) acts adding shades of twang to songs that, for the most part, all sound fairly familiar. The duds of the bunch, Bryan Adams's "When You Love Someone" and Sheryl Crow's "In Need," are saved in large part by some surprise keepers, courtesy of Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, and Gillian Welch. The covers are interesting enough. Brooks's take on Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" is modest and pithy and a far cry from the overblown Trisha Yearwood performance of the same tune that codas the collection. --Jason Verlinde

1 out of 5 stars Hope Floats - Original Soundtrack.......2007-03-08

This was not the soundtrack that I wanted. I wanted the soundtrack with the Garth Brooks song on it and some of the other more recognizable songs from the movie - not instrumentals. I was really disappointed and will continue to try to find the soundtrack I want.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2007-03-08

I thought that this was the actually songs from the movie....not the score. Nice, but not sure who wants to listen to random movie scores.

5 out of 5 stars Hope Floats..............2006-12-15

was a great movie. I bought this CD as a gift for a friend, she enjoys it.

3 out of 5 stars EVERYONE LISTEN!!!.......2006-05-14

For some confused reviewers out there, just to set the story straight-the song "Make You Feel My Love" was written by Bob Dylan, not Garth Brooks. I've got nothing against Garth, but give credit where credit is due!

5 out of 5 stars A great album........2005-04-06

Just wanted to let anyone reading these reviews that the review by MusicFan posted September 2, 2003 about how misleading these reviews are, is completely wrong!! Musicfan is talking about a totally different CD. He/She wanted the album with "various artists" but bought the wrong one containing the "original movie soundtrack". This is a great album and worth every cent. Any of the reviews that refer to this album with 11 tracks is in the wrong place. The "various artists" album has 13 tracks. Just trying to clear up some confusion!

5 out of 5 stars What a GREAT underrated band.......2006-10-14

I discovered the Mavericks after hearing Raul Malo. I think his best work is with the Mavericks. The band is tight and a great backing for Malo's singing.

This CD is a wonderful surprise

If you are a fan of the Mavericks and want to have that one CD to keep near your CD player or in your car, this is the one to buy!! It covers all of the previous CDs by the old Mavericks.

5 out of 5 stars The Mavericks - The Definitive Collection is Superb!.......2006-02-25

Recently I heard "Blue Moon" on the radio and was taken away to "another land". It was so beautiful. I searched online, found it was the Mavericks that recorded it and immediately ordered the CD. The entire CD has spectacular cuts on it. These hits were originally recorded when I was quite young (the 50's), but they're just as fresh as the latest popular Country music of today. Foot stompin', dream away, smooth, an excellent variety in this collection. I can't get enough of it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-02-21

This is a wonderful CD. The Mavericks are full of talent. Their sound is very unique. I love to listen to this any time, no matter if I am at work, driving, cleaning house, having a dinner party...ANYTIME!! Its great, buy it now!! You will not be disappointed!

Amazon.com essential recording

What a Crying Shame is more commercial and conventional than its debut predecessor, but every bit as enjoyable. Raul Malo has such a terrific voice that he can wear his broken heart on his sleeve without lapsing into self- pity. In fact, the very act of confessing his hurt seems to charge him with rocking excitement, especially when he gets a melodic hook as juicy as that on the title track or the Roy Orbison tribute, ""I Should Have Been True." Trisha Yearwood sings harmony on the saloon ballad ""Neon Blue," and the band turns Bruce Springsteen's ""All That Heaven Will Allow" into the honky-tonk shuffle it was always meant to be. --Geoffrey Himes

Amazon.com

A simply stunning country album. Granted, the songs here mark a disappointing retreat from the complex emotional truths and social commentary of the band's previous From Hell to Paradise, but with a sound centered around the gorgeous, soaring tenor of singer-songwriter Raul Malo, the newly simplified songs here still manage to convey rich emotional moods. With updated Ray Price shuffles, Roy Orbison-influenced country pop, a crossover cover of Bruce Springsteen's "All That Heaven Will Allow," and catchy Nashville hits like "O What a Thrill" and the title track, What a Crying Shame includes some of the finest mainstream country music of the last 25 years. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars THE VOICE !!!!!!!.......2006-08-23

Bought this in 1994 when it came out...I absolutly love the sound! Especially "I Should Have Been True"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2006-01-29

I have had this cd for years and I decided to write this review because The Mavercks have different types of songs from one cd to the next (although The Mavericks have a very distinct sound which separates them from everyone else). The more recent releases have a terrific blend of instruments (includung trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, keyboard, organ, drums, guitars, and so on). This cd does not have all that but they clearly are in a league of their own. Though some country radio stations played a little Mavericks music on the airways, it was obvious that they were not standard by any means. The Mavericks take music to a new level. "Pretend" is one of my favorite songs and compare this version with today's version, which I've heard live. It is available on the "Live In Austin Texas" DVD; unfortunately not on cd. You'll be surprised at the difference. Raul Malo is wonderful on "O What A Thrill" and "What A Crying Shame". Bruce Springsteen's "All That Heaven Will Allow" is covered nicely here. A must have for the collection...

5 out of 5 stars Their most popular album in America.......2005-06-01

Two of the founder members of Mavericks were fans of traditional country music from Florida who knew that they had to play a different style of music to make a living. Their early albums, including this one, were clearly influenced by traditional country but not limited by it. While there are traditional instrument here including fiddle and steel guitar, the credits also include congas, tambourine, organ and other non-country instruments. Nevertheless, the overall feel of this album is country and should please all but the most die-hard traditionalists.

With Raul Malo's superb voice and classic songs such as the title track and There goes my heart, this became (and has remained) their most successful album in America. Most of the songs are originals but the album includes fine cobers of O what a thrill (Jesse Winchester) and All that heaven will allow (Bruce Springsteen). Other highlights include Neon blue (with Trisha Yearwood on backing vocals), Pretend and I should have been true.

Although my favorite Mavericks album is the one that followed this (Music for all occasions) and the one after that (Trampoline) provided the Mavericks with a huge new British fan base, I rate this album very highly.

4 out of 5 stars classic and real.......2003-12-16

With all the glossy, ready-made country flim on the radio these days, some listeners may be yearing for some of the real thing. If so, pick up this older cd by the Mavericks. Raul Malo (lead singer) has an amazing voice, almost haunting, and the band seems to build songs around it. The whole thing grabs you from the start and will keep you mesmerized until the end. Although some of their newer albums lacked the punch of this one, you should still check them out. Word.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The One.......2007-05-02

The Mavericks were a mighty band expertly skirting the periphery of Country, Blues, Latin, Pop and Lounge. They weren't a big seller but did provide some exceptional music over their career mainly because of expert musicianship, superb songwriting, great taste in covers and the pure beauty of the voice of Raul Malo. Now to this album. Firstly, I don't have it, but do have all their albums-as-albums so I am familiar with just about all this material. As with all the "Gold" albums, it has been compiled with impeccable taste and gives the listener an excellent overview of this great band. There are quite a few other "best-of's" about but this one, at the current price, is the one to get. It covers their entire career and picks the eyes out of the best songs from each of their albums. The only drawback is that if this is the only Mavericks CD you get and want more (which I'm sure you will), you'll probably be doubling up on quite a few songs. If you want a more comprehensive Mavericks' CD collection then get this and "What A Crying Shame" and "Music For All Occasions". You'll get their best songs and a few rarities thrown in for good measure. The Mavericks were/are a great American roots music band with one of the best voices in country/pop, nay, all music. Great Stuff. Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Mavericks Gold.......2006-11-10

This is a great either for fans of the Mavericks or for those of us who are fans and introducing their music to friends and family. I love the sound of Raul Malo's voice and the guitars are fantastic. If you love country or even rock you will love this album. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best, most extensive Mavericks collection available.......2006-09-11

Though not a frequent visitor to the upper levels of the country charts, The Mavericks - with their unique Tex-Mex/latin tinged/roots rockin' sound - made some of the best music to come out of Nashville during the 90's. For many, Raul Malo IS The Mavericks and indeed, Malo wrote most of their recordings while his magnificent vocals - equals parts Orbison and Yoakam - hauntingly take center stage. Not to be ignored in The Mavericks mix, however, is the solid rhythmic foundation provided by bassist Robert Reynolds and drummer Paul Deakin.

The Mavericks' output for MCA/Mercury from 1992-99 consisted of merely four studio albums, a hits set with four new recordings, and a handful of side projects. Such was the quality of their music that even 2004's 20-track Definitive Collection group didn't come close to painting an accurate picture of the group's diversity. That has been rectified with this new two-disc, 41 track retrospective.

Disc one contains a hefty seven tracks from their first three albums: From Hell To Paradise (1992), What A Crying Shame (1994), and Music For All Occasions (1995). The second disc is where things get interesting, with a soundtrack offering ("Blue Moon" from Apollo 13), non-album singles ("I Don't Care," "She Does"), four tracks from international versions of their albums (including a shuffling rendition of the Peter & Gordon hit "A World Without Love"), two live recordings, and a contribution to a Gram Parsons tribute project ("Hot Burrito #1), in addition to seven tracks from Trampoline (1998) and the three tracks from their 1999 hits collection.

The omission of the Beatlesque "Things I Cannot Change" (from Super Colossal Smash Hits Of The 90's) and the collaboration with Trisha Yearwood on the Sinatras' camp classic "Somethin' Stupid" (from Music For All Occasions) keeps Gold from being my "ultimate" Mavericks set. But I'm picky. Gold is a great introduction/summation for Mavericks' neophytes and contains enough fine rarities to entice the devoted fan.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of their best work.......2006-09-04

Although the Mavericks were only moderately successful on the charts, they were still one of the liveliest and most innovative country acts of the mid-1990s. This 2-CD set captures them at their best, with one disc devoted to their early hits, and a second disc gathering their later work, including numerous rarities -- songs from soundtracks, tribute albums, singles, etc. From their punchy early twang to the later work that empahsized singer Raul Malo's uncanny likeness to the late Roy Orbison, this is a collection that will please longtime fans and newcomers alike!

Time was when pop radio was an amazingly eclectic place. The Mavericks' latest, Trampoline, bounces between pop styles so effectively that it almost sounds like the world's greatest old-school pop station. "Tell Me Why" is brassy blues-soul like B.B. King was scoring with in 1970; "To Be with You" is countrypolitan down to its strings and backing choir, while "I Don't Even Know Your Name" could be a long-lost Hollies recording. Throughout the disc, we're offered touches of everything from Beatles-esque sitar to Herb Alpert horns, and all of it's pure, powerful pop. The standout, though, is "I've Got the Feeling," which captures the sprawling sound of '70s Elvis with all of the sincerity and magnificence required, and without a jumpsuit in sight. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Flawless!!.......2006-05-07

This album is absolutely perfect from start to finish with not a bad song included.
Raul Malo's vocals are silky smooth and a pleasure to listen to. His voice just seems to glide over the melodies, accompanied by some of the best harmonies in the business. Raul's voice is somewhat remenscent of the late Roy Orbison, especially "Fool #1"
All in all, a musically perfect collection of mostly upbeat tunes that you can't help but tap your feet to.

5 out of 5 stars Country music with horns.......2005-07-25

Ostensibly, this is country music but, despite the inclusion of a steel guitar, a banjo and some acoustic guitars, this album cannot really be described as country - even using contemporary definitions. Along with the aforementioned instruments, there are electric guitars, organs, pianos, drums, strings and a full horn section including trumpet, trombone, saxophone, flute and clarinet. Of all the instruments, the horn section is the most important but what makes the album so successful is that, despite the plethora of musicians, the overall fell of the album is relaxing and the musicians never get in the way of the outstanding voice of Raul Malo.

The album didn't fit easily into any popular category, which may explain why it became far more popular in Britain (where radio stations generally play a broad range of music) than America (where radio stations cater for specific audiences). The first single (Dance the night away) made the top five in the UK pop charts, much to my surprise and delight. There are many other great songs here, all of them originals.

This is an outstanding album, very different from their previous album (Music for all occasions) or indeed anything else they've recorded. Country fans may not appreciate it (unless they have eclectic tastes, like me) but if you enjoy high quality, easy listening music, you might enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars No Bad Songs.......2005-04-08

One of the blessings of the CD-era is the ability to skip less-favorable songs. With this album you don't need to. From start to finish, this is a billiant tour of the song-writing talent of Raul Malo. Highlights include the the subtly deceiving Latin sounds of "Dance the Night Away" and the misty-eyed nostalgia of "To Be With You." The old-time Gospel sound of "Save a Prayer" will get your feet tapping, and the mellow, soothing sounds of "Dream River" is a perfect way to end a fantastic album.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic!.......2003-12-18

The Mavericks once again showcase their extraordinary music talent. Upbeat "Dance The Night Away" makes this album worth getting. "I Should Know", "Someone Should Tell her", "I've Got This Feeling", "I Hope You Want Me Too" and "Melbourne Mambo" are excellent tunes. These songs are comprised of many instruments including: trombone, trumpet, saxophone, keyboard, bass and lead guitar, drums, etc.. The Mavericks separate themselves from, well, everybody because they have a deep range of instruments. If you're as discouraged as I with bands that work with nothing but guitars and a set of drums, this album is just what you need.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Up-Tempo CD.......2003-02-14

I first became interested in The Mavericks when I saw the music video for the song "Dance tht Night Away", so I searched for the disc that contained that song, which led me to "Tramploine". I must say, I was extremely happy when I heard the other songs on the CD as well. Of course, "Dance the Night Waay" is my favorite, but "I Should Know", "Someone Should Tell Her", and "I've Got This Feeling" are good, too. Raul Malo's strong voice really makes this CD enjoyable to listen to, and the insturmentals from the other band members are first-rate. I highly recommend this great CD. Listen and find out what makes The Mavericks one of the best country groups around.

Amazon.com essential recording

If Chris Isaak comes at the Roy Orbison-Ricky Nelson tradition of three-minute country-pop operettas from the pop side, the Mavericks' Raul Malo approaches from the country perspective. Malo's dreamy, creamy tenor is every bit as intoxicating as Isaak's, and his emotional range is much broader. On this, the Mavericks' fourth album, Malo and his three bandmates demonstrate their complete mastery of this territory with its heavily echoed vocals, its low-pitched guitar figures, its chunky backbeat, and its claustrophobic sense of romance that is almost right but not quite. Bassist Robert Reynolds's wife Trisha Yearwood sings a duet with Malo on Nancy Sinatra's "Something Stupid," but the album's highlights are the four songs Malo cowrote with former NRBQ guitarist Al Anderson, including a Tex-Mex rave-up juiced by accordion legend Flaco Jimenez. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Well Done!!.......2006-01-29

I have the complete collection of the Mavericks' music and this cd is one of my favorites. This is a love song arrangement with each having a unique touch. "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me down" is high tempo, "Something Stupid" is a mellow duet (with Raul Malo and Trisha Yearwood), and others are simply delivered at slow and moderate tempos with some sad and some uplifitng lyrics. The music and lyrics do blend nicely and I personally think that this cd deserves more recognition than it gets. Difficult to categorize this because it is not the country tune of the earlier days of The Mavericks and it is not yet filled with the additonal horn section and miscellaneous instruments of todays Mavericks.

5 out of 5 stars One of Three.......2006-01-01

I'll make this as simple as I can. If I were allowed to keep only three of the thousand or so CDs I have in my collection of Pop, Jazz, Rock, Country, Gospel, Easy Listening and New Age music, this CD would be one of the three. You can't go wrong on this one.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Thrilled To Hear This Music.......2004-03-08

Desiring for many years to avoid what is today termed C&W music, I missed the emergence of The Mavericks onto the pop/country scene. After seeing the band's lead singer, Raul Malo, on a production of PBS' Soundstage, and investigating his recording history, I was thrilled to find what he and his Mavericks cohorts had accomplished.

I am of an age that can recall the smell of the dust burning from the radio's vacuum tubes as it warmed and the cadence of an Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison or Gene Pitney hit grew into my ears and imagination.

I purchased both the "Music For All Ocassions" and "What A Crying Shame" CD's, and am happy that I did.

I love this music.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, and true to the sounds of yesterday and today.......2003-03-05

A great album, this being their third from MCA (fourth album officialy). Here, the sounds of 50's/ 60's Nashville pop with a splash of country is such a wonderful treat.

The only two songs that suggest quite different, are the 12 string set "Here Comes The Rain", which deserved the Grammy it got, and the honky-tex trip "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down", which is so much fun...great video too......

"Foolish Heart" makes jukeboxs across the land ache to play it.....smooth vocals from Raul as well as Shelby Lynne and Lari White backing him up....and great GOLDEN sounds from Nick's tasteful playing on arched top electric guitar.
"My Secret FLame" carries you to lounges way across town at night, and "Missing You" is striking as the ballad of ballads. Bassist Robert Reynolds makes "One Step Away" and "The Writing On The Wall" a happy tempo, while drummer Paul Deakin makes the door in the joint swing wide open in the MEGA snappy "If You Only Knew".

Other soft sounds in "Loving You" and "I'm Not Gonna Cry For You" are sweet, and the surprise her eis the great and best version yet of the classic from a while back "Something Stupid". Trisha Yearwood (Robert's wife at the time) duets with Raul for a well done cover.
Please forgive those people out there for excusing this as a chessy, fluffy, and goo-goo project. It is a romantic themed album mostly, and should be taken as for what it showcases. THREE songs here may play tag in their THEMES sounding "SOMEWHAT" alike, but don't a lot of Beatles songs, or Frank Sinatra tunes do the same? Come on !! Nobody knows how to awaken the sounds of this era better ...than the Mavericks.

p.s.- give the goofy "One Step Away" a chance...it always puts away any gloom in my day......okay dudes / dudettes ?
Whats wrong with songs being just happy....simple?

Highlights: Foolish Heart, truly a song for the jukebox...GRAMMY? OVER HERE...Need another one for this one!
And Here COmes The Rain.....what an original.....

5 out of 5 stars Mavericks by name, mavericks by style.......2002-07-27

You never know what to expect from a Mavericks album. Even as I write this, I don't even know if there will be another. Each album released so far is markedly different to any of the others, yet each is brilliant in it's own way. This is my favorite. Some of the others were more commercially successful, so obviously a lot of people disagree.

This album isn't really country, yet it has a definite country flavor (like so much of contemporary country music). Most of the songs are originals, but there is a stunning cover of Something Stupid (with guest Trisha Yearwood, then married to one of the band) which beats both the famous versions (which I also enjoy) - the original by Nancy and Frank, and the more recent by Robbie and Nicole. I have the British version of the CD, which also includes a cover of Blue Moon, which is better than either Elvis or the Marcels. Great though these covers are, it is the original songs which are the reason to buy this.

There is a great slice of Tex-Mex swing on All you ever do is bring me down, which hints at what would appear on their follow-up album (Trampoline). Most of the other songs are love ballads, beginning with Foolish Heart (this includes backing vocals by Lari White and Shelby Lynne), all sung superbly by Raul in his distinctive voice. The songs have enough variation in styles and tempos to keep the album interesting, yet they all fit together really well.

This was one of my most played albums in the late nineties. I hadn't played it for a while before getting it out to review it, but it still stands as one of my favorite contemporary country albums.

Few country artists of the 1990s have been able to meld a pronounced pop sensibility with the core elements of classic country as effectively as Miami's Mavericks. Their 1992 major-label debut displays a band mature well beyond its years, one not afraid of either tantalizing melodies or country music history. Here the Mavericks reprise four tunes from their eponymous indie debut and toss in four new Raul Malo originals along with covers of Hank Williams (a lackluster "Hey Good Lookin'") and Buck Owens (a much more engaging "Excuse Me"). Their deft mix of old-school honky-tonk, Orbisonesque sob stories, and punchy modern country-rock serves notice of a band with enormous commercial and artistic potential. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-04-12

Having only heard this Group once before, I was particularly pleased with their performance especially the track Children. Hope to hear more of the Group.

5 out of 5 stars First commercial recordings.......2005-07-12

The Mavericks recorded some material that they circulated to record companies when they were looking for a deal (and those recordings were eventually released as an album) but this album marks the official start to their career. On its own merits, this is an impressive debut although their subsequent albums (What a crying shame, Music for all occasions, Trampoline) are even more impressive.

The set opens with a very sad song (Mr Jones) about a man returning to a former home after many years, only to find it in a state of semi-dereliction. An even sadder song (Children) closes the set. In between, there are some other sad songs (This broken heart, The end of the line, Forever blue) as well as a Buck Owens cover (Excuse me I think I've got a heartache) but its not all doom and gloom.

The title track is about a Cuban man who finally makes it to America I got you is about a man who puts up with a lot of things, knowing that his partner makes it all worthwhile. A better way is about a man scorning a former partner who cheated on him, having found a new and better partner. Most upbeat of all is the second and last cover here (Hey good looking, the old Hank Williams classic).

If you enjoy listening to the Mavericks and you've already got some of their other albums, you should give this one a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Class Act from Malo and the Mavericks.......2002-03-02

I've called this the best country album for non-country listeners for various reasons. First, Raul Malo - the unlikely Cuban-country-songwriter channels Roy Orbison in a way that often surpasses the great late Roy with a pure voice that must be keeping the angels company in heaven. Second, there are familiar songs here like "Hey, Good Lookin'" which the Mavericks deliver beautifully, with new added resonance and spirit. And finally, the originals - from the title track to the last song "Children" (an eerie paean to lost innocence that easily ranks as one of the best story songs of our time) - are wriiten with a sure, steady hand, and delivered with incomparable feeling. It's no wonder this talented group has won multiple Grammy Awards, and this album, along with "What Crying Shame" and several others, proves their standing at the top of their game. A spirited, wonderous journey that stands heads and tails above myriad other "country" acts. This is a definitive collection from Malo and company.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I have ever owned.......2001-06-25

Wow, I saw the Mavericks in concert in 1995 and purchased all their albums the next day. When I listened to From Hell to Paradise it sent me spinning. Listen to This Broken Heart, If you have ever had your heart broken you will weep. Not only can the band rock like in Hey, Good Looking, but Raul has one of the riches most poinant voices I have ever heard. They also have a social conscience as evidenced in Children, they beg us to look out for the little ones who need our love and protection. The best song on this album rings through my mind often, paricularly during the Elian Gonzalez affair. This is Raul's lament for Cuba, From Hell to Paradise, "No pleasantries, no luxuries and no little childrens milk, while ministers wives spend all their lives in china's finest silk, my back has been broken many times but my spirit lingers on..." . Buy this album, listen to it and let it touch your soul. Thank you, David, Paul, Robert and most of all Raul for this gift, you touched my heart and soul, you are truly artists.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Be Shy, Give It A Try!.......2001-05-29

First of all, whoever heard of a country band from Miami? At least that's what I thought when I first read about The Mavericks, but after listening to this, their debut album, I quickly forgot about that transgression. Mixing a pop sensibility with the twang of classic country, The Mavericks unfortunately found themselves categorized as "new country," and as a result, found themselves fighting for attention with dreck like Garth Brooks, The Judds, and Faith Hill. What they ultimately bring to the table, however, is the bravado and attitude of a rock and roll band, as evidenced by "Mr. Jones," the title track, and their cover of "Hey Good Lookin'". And Raul Malo's voice? Don't get me started. A keeper...

However, the sound quality of the CD is flat----very dull. What a shame. I can't stand to listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars A little sloppy, but fun.......2005-09-28

I saw the Mavericks a few times before they broke up, and on the Trampoline tour, I was disappointed that they had brought horns for the new songs, but sent them away for the older songs that could have been enhanced. It almost seemed lazy of Malo to bring horns, but not bother to write charts for the older songs.

That has been rectified, finally, by this album. Not all of the songs are gems, but the performances are solid and the horns absolutely add depth to the songs. My only real complaint is that the sound mix isn't great. Of course you lose some of the studio precision in a club setting, but it's not like these tapes came right off the board into your car. They could have cleared up some of the muddiness and mixed the horns and vocals a little higher.

Other than that, this is worth owning if you like the Mavericks.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent live renditions of some of The Mavericks' best material.......2005-07-03

"The Definitive Collection" remains the best place for newcomers to sample The Mavericks, but this 2004 live album would make a terrific introduction as well. And fans will certainly want to hear this almost flawless live album featuring a horn-augumented version of The Mavericks performing most of their best and best-known material.

It's not spliced together from various recordings; "Live In Austin, Texas" was recorded in one "take" on June 2, 2004 at Stubb's Bar-B-Q in Austin, and The Mavericks' eclectic blend of rock n' roll, country, latin folk and sophisticated pop works well in this live setting...a couple of songs, like "Siboney" and "San Jose", never really get off the ground, but most of what's here is very good indeed. It's hard to sit still to these swinging, energetic renditions of songs like "Dance The Night Away" and "There Goes My Heart", and while it would have been nice to hear "Things I Cannot Change" and "Here Comes My Baby", there is more than enough good stuff here to keep the listener interested.

Singer Raul Malo is in top form, and all music-lovers should be able find something to like on this 73-minute collection of The Mavericks' melodic country-rock.
I dare you to not start bopping your head like a pigeon to "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down"!

5 out of 5 stars Dwight Yoakam + Mariachis + Big Band Sound = The Mavericks.......2004-12-16

Awesome album; awesome group. An absolute must.

5 out of 5 stars Been There, Would Do It Again.......2004-10-20

Okay, I was there. Third row, center, dancing in 90+ degree heat, with everyone else lucky enough to get a ticket. Austin and the Mavericks have a special love affair, with this the band's third appearance in this town in six months (they also played the 2003 Austin City Limits Music Festival a year ago September). The Mavericks made their comeback last year with their self-titled release featuring "I Want to Know" and a local favorite "San Jose", a tribute to a South Austin hotel the band likes to stay at when they are in town.

The Mavericks now include Eddie Perez on guitar, who fits comfortably in the band with his guitar virtuosity and accompanying vocals. The Mavericks-Eddie, Raul Malo, Paul Deakin, and Robert Reynolds-display consummate professionalism which is only surpassed by their down-to-earth humor and presence. The set list covers hits from the beginning of their career together to solo Raul offerings, including the swoonable "Siboney" originally recorded with Los Super Seven. "Every Little Thing About You" was a crowd favorite and the high temperature did not dissuade the hip swaying and singing along that permeated the night. Raul's voice has been compared to Roy Orbison's and it was a marvel to watch him hit the notes up close. The rest of the band was phenomenal too, with Robert and Paul switching instruments for a song or two. The spicy horn section, Jerry Dale McFadden on keys, and Alberto Salas on percussion made for a wonderful, too short night of incredible music. The Mavericks are better than ever and this album was well worth the wait.

On their first album since 1998, the Mavericks have finally made a Career Move that Matters--they've ditched the desperate, ultra-cool factor and settled down to play straight-head, unselfconscious pop. If Raul Malo & Company had simply done this earlier, it might have buoyed their off-and-on career, and moved them beyond country radio, where they never really belonged in the first place. As such, the album signifies a rebirth, reflected in the self-titling of what amounts to their reunion album. From the opening cut, the driving "I Wanna Know," the band immerses itself in the thrill and energy of `60s British pop, with the usual side trips to the graves of Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, and to the sonic birthplace of Malo's Cuban heritage. While a faithful remake of the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe" closes the record, it sets the scene for the album as a whole with its grandiose and theatrical homage to obsessive love. At last, the melodramatic Malo never sounds overreaching, because he's made the material match his nearly operatic vision. Throughout, The Mavericks is smart, sophisticated, and knowing, from its lush and sensuous cocktail forays ("Wondering," "A Little Too Lonely"), to its sexy Latin come-on ("San Jose") and swingy shuffle ("Because of You"), the latter of which recalls the way Presley updated hoary country songs recycled from Hank Snow and Eddy Arnold. Still, it's not the ghost of either of the big Hanks that hangs over this album, but Phil Spector. A dazzling comeback, and one of the year's best albums. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Once again............2005-02-20

The Mavericks are truly a gift to the world of music, and while
I have not heard the whole album, what I have merits the rating.
So my not having heard this in its entirety, I give the Mavericks special credit for being an enigma. In a way I admire them for having come in through the backdoor, so to speak, being a "country" outfit, and while understanding the genre and tipping their hats to the founding fathers, they enjoyed the popularity country provided them, yet doing it in a disguise. Where I give the Mavericks a lot of credit is that they have displayed their rock/pop sensibilities in their live shows when they were riding the crest of their country popularity. That they have truly branched out, playing what they feel like, and hopefully letting some of those who are country fans and Mavericks fans alike, enjoy some diversity. One thing that needs to be said about the Mavericks is they are true music fans, spanning many facets, and we can hopefully look forward to more output from this band. My hats off to the Mavs.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfying.......2005-02-11

The Mavericks first album in almost 5 years was worth waiting for. As before, it is difficult to label this newly refreshed group into any commonly held category, and it would be a shame to do so. They are often called "country" but that would discount the many other musical roots they display from one track to the next; R&B, Latin, Pop and Blues all come to mind as I listen to this album. But the overall effect is satisfying, enjoyable and...well, just fun as hell to listen to.

The production values vary from heavy to simple which for this listener, results in a nice surprise now and again. The one thing that is constant is Malo's vox and the talented musicians that make up the core band as well as those they have brought in to make this a very enjoyable collection. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Very catchy and fun. Would be a 5 if not for the production.......2004-12-22

As longtime fans know, The Mavericks were one of the most acclaimed country bands of the '90s and, at their apex, they were among the most popular. They never fit the mold of what people think of as "country" and some were very critical of their sound, but in my opinion good music is good music no matter where it originates from or where the company/the record industry chooses to try and place them because it seems like they think we are idiots and need to have our music in neat little packages. Some other musicians, like k.d. lang and Wynonna Judd, have been criticized for leaving their country roots behind, but in my mind their development as artists should take them wherever it takes them. Having said that, I too may be guilty of having some genre biases as I was hoping that this release would try and hit it out of the ballpark by roughing up the production a little. The guys sound better than ever, but the production and certain musical arrangements strips them of a certain liveliness that prevents this release from being the AMAZING homerun that it would otherwise have been.

There is no doubt that Raul Malo is an outstanding singer and that this release has some great and catchy tunes, but as I listened to it I wanted Raul and the band to let loose. I know that hardcore fans will think that I am crazy and go to town on this review, but I am not a Mavericks hater, but a fan was bothered by how distant the band sounds due to the aforementioned production and orchestration.

After hearing my critique some may think that I did not like this release, but that would not be correct as I think it's a pretty good effort. "I Want To Know" is a great anthem. "In My Dreams" is beautiful and although some criticize Raul for sounding like a poor man's Roy Orbison, I have to respectfully disagree as all artists show their influences and Raul is no different. If you listen carefully you can see that he has also listened to Chris Isaak, Patsy Cline, the Beatles, and Jose Feliciano, and k.d. lang, and Los Lobos just to name a few. "I am Wondering" is simply gorgeous and may be my favorite song on the CD. I love the guitar and harmonica. This song screams summer! "By The Time" shows the band's country waltz roots and has a quiet strength. "Would You Believe" is a catchy classic waiting to be stripped of the busy production that derails Raul emotive singing. "Too Lonely" is sumptuous and seductive.

At first I did not like "Time Goes By" because it seemed a little out of place and Willie Nelson did not quite convince me, but I have grown to love it and it's one of my favorites. I love the guitars and horns!! "San Jose" is the only wrong turn as it is almost killed by a mess of strings at the beginning and it does quite get back on course. "Because Of You" is a party waiting to happen! "Air That I Breathe" is surprisingly good as I was ready to hate it because I wanted Raul to break lose, but to my surprise he has made the song his own and it could become the definitive version of the song.

This CD easily earns 4 stars and I would raise it to 5 if it were not for the production. I've heard these guys live and I can tell you that this is tame compared to the energy in their live shows. Although I am generally not a huge fan of live releases, I would love for these guys to record an unplugged version of this CD or a live one that would show the world that Raul is more than a Roy Orbison sound-alike and that these guys can rock with the best of them.

2 out of 5 stars wrong direction.......2004-12-12

Saw this band live in 1994, when it seemed they were having fun just playing and playing. On this album, over-production, pretense. On the first few albums there was guileless style to the music - now it seems there is overwrought feel to the music. Perhaps 'Lost in Nashville Production Values' should be the title of this album.
