Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

There are many fine tracks on this precious Album but none better than "Poor Butterfly". That one performance is worth the cost of the CD

Why it means so much to me.......2006-07-10

I'm as familiar to Willis Conover's voice as I am to Dad's. Conover's legendary Jazz Hour on VOA was a source of unfailing inspiration to people from all over the world and carried significance to East-Europeans living under oppressive Socialist dictatorship. Jazz Hour was one of the subtler weapons used by the US administration to promulgate its Capitalist vision and the famed American Dream.

I had been listening to JH probably from the day I was born! I vivid recall Dad putting on the radio at around 7:30 pm on Saturdays. We waited excitedly for the valves to get heated as the tuner gradually hummed into life. The tuner knob would have to be adjusted to the precise location to pluck the right signals from the airwaves. This was no easy task as the wavelength (I forget its exact frequency since we located by the relative position of the pointer, not the absolute frequency) was heavily congested and we had a trying time reaching the precise position. All too often we found unwanted signals intruding into our listening pleasure. We would have to constantly keep adjusting the knob. I didn't realize it then, but I now feel there was magic in this little forced ritual we had to break into every now and then!

Anyway, Dad's work would sometimes deprive him of the opportunity to listen to JH. I guess it was circa 1996 when on one such JH, Dad had to work in the evening shift. There were many more JH's he missed, but I guess this one was the costliest.

About a year prior (1995), Tony Bennett had released an album titled `Here's to the Ladies,' a compilation of 18 vocal standards dedicated to 17 legendary female vocalists. This album went on to win the Grammy, although I don't know under what category. Willis Conover dedicated the said JH to reviewing and playing selections form this album. I had never heard of Tony Bennett before, and I wasn't really much of a fan of vocal Jazz. Jazz, to me, was only supposed to be entirely instrumental; no room for the voice here, I reasoned. That's the idea Dad commonly held and I just found it convenient to imitate his!

Bennett proved me so wrong! Never had I heard vocal Jazz so mesmerizing, so paralyzing, so overwhelming, so Spartan and yet so out-of-the-world. I was held absolutely enchanted for the full hour as Conover's baritone introduced the selections. I guess it was the most unforgettable musical experience I've ever had. I deeply regretted Dad missing out on music so beautiful. I remember waiting eagerly for him to arrive late that night. The wait seemed so long and excruciating! When Dad finally returned, I told him all about what had just transpired and also promising him to buy the CD some day. Dad shared my enthusiasm. We discussed Bennett so many times after that. Dad, unlike me, was well acquainted with Bennett and I got to learn a lot more about my new Jazz guru!

Conover had said that the album was released under the Columbia records, a Sony brand. I knew the chances that I would chance upon my dream CD were very slim primary because Columbia records were rarely available in India. Adding to my woes was the fact that Indians hardly had a taste for Jazz. Marketers knew this well enough and would perhaps never bother to import the CD here. I clung on to my hope and never gave up my search.

The search lasted 10 years! I had moved heaven and earth but couldn't find my album. Even Indian shopping sites failed me, though you could find enough of the likes of Michael Jackson & Britney Spears. It was then that I decided to give up on the chase and import the CD directly via Amazon along with a few more albums. The order was placed, but soon cancelled on account of a snag.

I visited Landmark @ The Forum yesterday, accompanied with Subashish. My customary stopover at Landmark is where the Jazz and Classical CD's are kept, a place avoided by everyone else! I was browsing through the collection when I came across the section dedicated to Tony Bennett. At once my mind raced back to the incident that had happened 10 years ago. I didn't really expect to come across the album I was looking for, since I had already browsed through the section on innumerable occasions previously and hadn't met any success.

Imagine how ecstatic I was when I finally got to see what must have been a divine sight for: the album `Here's to the Ladies' neatly placed between other albums!!! There was no question what I had to do next: buy it! I could hardly wait, but wait I did since not browsing through the classical albums was unimaginable. Guess what, I now came across 2 more albums that I was looking for for years! Ended up buying all the 3 albums. Which one was the most precious? Now that's a silly question to ask!

Willis Conover passed away in '97.
Dad breathed his last in '04.
Tony Bennett is luckily still with us.

My only regret is that though I've finally kept my word, Dad has once again missed listening to the album. And no matter how long I wait for him this time, he's not coming back.
Dad, I'm so sorry for being late.

(I've been listening to the 'Here's to the Ladies' as I write this testimonial. The music doesn't fail me, though the magic does. Not a fault of the album though.)

Tony Bennett is excellent, specially in this album!!!!!, .......2005-08-11

I love Tony, because of his voice and his performence is excellent, specially this album. When I had my first album titled: Bleu Velvet I was amazed and his songs are touching. My favourite songs are Stranger In Paradise, Rags To Riches, I Wanna Be Around and Tender Is The Night. I saw the movie Goodfellas when I was 15 years old and I never heard about Tony Bennett. In the movie I heard the song Rags to Riches and I jumped of my chair and I was touched. Almost every friday night when I come from a hard day work I listen to Tony's music and It really relaxes me. My mother had a bunch of Tony Bennett records when she was 20 years old and she was and still is favourit by the song Stranger In Paradise. I recommend every one who loves jazz to listen to Tony Benneth because he is one of the best singers.

Evocative of the Smoky Old Barroom.......2005-07-05

This one is called "Here's to the Ladies" and the name fits but it could just as well have been called "Smoky old Barrooms" for the music evokes images of being in just such a setting and listening to the musician. All of the songs do indeed make some reference to women and therein lies much of the appeal. These songs tug at the heartstrings.

The style is pure Tony. These are not the big arrangements with large bands but are instead more intimate pieces with minimal but sufficient accompaniment. At times I thought the bass was too high but that was easily changed with the settings on my system. Except for the possible preponderance of bass, the quality of the recordings is excellent.

A great tribute to the great ladies of song.......2003-12-20

While none of Tony's covers of these wonderful songs improve on the original versions, they are all extremely well performed and this album may be the vehicle by which some of these ladies, especially the less famous among them, may win new fans. Of course, all of them were famous at one time but many have long since been forgotten.

The ladies paid tribute to are Barbra Streisand (People), Peggy Lee (I'm in love again), Judy Garland (Somewhere over the rainbow), Blossom Dearie (My love went to London), Sarah Vaughan (Poor butterfly), Doris Day (Sentimental journey), Carmen McRae (Cloudy morning), Rosemary Clooney (Tenderly), Mabel Mercer (Down in the depths), Margaret Whiting (Moonlight in Vermont), Helen O'Connell (Tangerine), Billie Holiday (God bless the child), Dinah Washington (Daybreak), Ella Fitzgerald (You showed me the way), Lena Horne (Honeysuckle rose), Liza Minnelli (Maybe this time), Ethel Merman (I got rhythm) and Margaret Whiting again (My ideal).

It seems a little odd that Tony chose two Margaret Whiting songs, when you consider that Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore, June Christy, Jeri Southern, Helen Forrest, Julie London, Martha Tilton and many other wonderful ladies are not represented, but I suspect that he could not make up his mind between Moonlight in Vermont and My ideal, so he included both.

This is an outstanding collection that should please Tony's fans - or any fans of this type of music.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

Don't underestimate those "unknown" Operettas!!.......2005-07-07

This is, as far as I know - the only way of buying the "official" recordings of "The Grand Duke" and "Utopia" - which seem to be otherwise out of print!! Several of the others are not that easy to get either.

In any case - most people getting this set will already have the Mikado, and very probably Pirates and Pinafore for that matter, so you're really getting it for the others.

So just for the record - someone has to say this!

The Mikado is (of course) a wonderful piece, but it enjoys its long running status as the most successful of all the G&S operettas very largely for "extra-musical" reasons. It is visually so wonderful, with all those great authentic costumes, and the whole idea of satirising English institutions by pretending they are Japanese is of course brilliantly funny.

Again, Pirates and Pinafore enjoy a lot of their acclaim simply because we have heard them so often. And at least part of the initial success of these (admittedly very funny and entertaining) pieces was the vogue for "nautical drama" on the popular Victorian stage.

Iolanthe, Ruddigore, and Yoemen are all MUCH stronger musically than any of what another reviewer here keeps calling the "trilogy". Patience, Princess Ida, and the Gondoliers all excel either "nautical" operetta, at least musically, although not, perhaps, the Mikado. And I have had a lot of fun listening to my recording of the Sorcerer - although I think most at least of the other G&S operettas are even more interesting.

As for "Trial by Jury" it is really another thing altogether - but in its kind the most perfect thing either Gilbert or Sullivan had anything to do with!

This leaves Utopia and the Grand Duke.

Both of these were produced after the long running friendship between G&S had soured, and they have been sadly neglected ever since. Utopia is none the less both musically beautiful and very funny, and well worth taking an effort to come to grips with. The main point of the satire (which many commentators and reviewers seem to miss) is the way that the English language and British (especially English) institutions were being adopted, often rather uncritically, by countries around the world (most, but not all, of them members of the British Empire, of course). India is perhaps the country Gilbert had most in mind, but you could set it in any of a dozen other countries. The residual problems this has left in the post-colonial world ensure that this work is still far from dated. In some ways this operetta is about globalisation! What could possibly be LESS dated than that!

The Grand Duke, on the other hand, is a bit of an odd man out - I suppose you still have to say it is the weakest of all the G&S efforts. It's the ONLY one that didn't score a very respectable run on its first outing. Surprisingly, however, if an attempt is made to duplicate the musical and (especially) dialogue cuts that G&S would have done themselves if they had not by this time been at each other's throats all the time, a very entertaining piece can be made of it. I was very agreeably surprised by the Ohio Light Opera recording, which does just that - and I am coming round to the idea that the only thing really wrong with the Duke is that it is too long.

ANYWAY:

For all people (especially callow youth) who remain convinced that G&S only wrote three operettas worth listening to - all I can say is, buy this set, and give the lesser known ones a chance. Make sure you have a libretto in your hands as you listen, of course. It may even just need a single hearing in some cases, but otherwise, be patient. In the meantime, you really cannot have any conception of what you are missing.

This 24-CD album consists of 12 plastic cases, each with a thin booklet giving background and plot summaries for the works on its 2 enclosed CD's. Most of the album consists of 15 operettas, 2 of which (Cox and Box, The Zoo) have texts not by Gilbert and 7 of which (The Sorcerer, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, Yeomen of the Guard, Utopia Limited, The Grand Duke) omit most of the spoken dialogue. Before listening to any of these operettas that you don't know well, you'll want to obtain a copy of its text so you can read along and not miss any of the words or the wit.

Wonderful set, if a little inconsistent at times........2003-07-07

If you thought that the Sargent set of G&S opera recordings was gargantum enough, then this D'Oyly Carte cycle is even more gargantum. Although it is more expensive (because of the four extra operas that the Sargent cycle did not include), this complete 24-CD set is like a joy to behold. There is a debate as to whether this is better than the Sargent cycle, but I like to think that this is a delight from first disc to last, because of the idiomatic sense of polish that these recordings seem to have, and are given a life that makes them able to breathe well. This is all thanks to Isidore Godfrey and Royston Nash's conducting. I know that the performances may not be entirely consistent (this is evident when you compare the performance and recording quality of Mikado and Pirates with those of Gondoliers and Pinafore), but this is only a matter of personal preference. The 1960s performances were given more sumptuous and well-detailed recordings than the 1970s recordings, made when the performing style was not so fresh. But anyway, I still think that this is definitely a good buy for anyone who loves G&S. Even with the consistency of Sargent's cheaper EMI set, I would still say: do go ahead to invest in the set because of the liveliness and style in this complete G&S cycle that Sargent never (hardly ever) tackles. The only thing is: I would also like to suggest complementing it with the 1957 Decca D'Oyly Carte recordings of Mikado and Pirates, recently released by the Sounds on CD label, so that these recordings can do justice to the enormous spirit of these operas.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!

Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11

I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Christine is fabulous. I met her in person, instead of waiting in a long line, she came by and talked to me (who was in front of the line) in order to get a drink quickly. I always let divas cut in line so I didn't mind...(I've had Lynn Redgrave cut in line ahead of me too once)...

Christine is fabulous. She definitely does justice to these songs...Her version of moonshine lullaby is, for my money, definitive. Her voice and her interpretations are different (but compare very favorably) with Barbara, Mary, Ethel and Julie...Great Job, missy!

Here's To The Ladies, was named one of the 10 BEST recordings of 2002 by USA Today. I received her latest CD as an anniversary gift. All of Christine's endeavors are truly a work of love...her first CD "Love is Good" is still my favorite. As I stated in my review of her first CD, it's a must to see Christine perform in person. Christine is such a gracious person to meet and know you will end up being a combination of friend and fan for life.

Simply the best CD of the year. I cannot stop playing this remarkable collection of songs brought to brilliant life by the amazing Ms. Andreas. She manages to pay homage to the ladies who originated these songs and stamp them with her own brilliance at the same time. Stop reading this review and get this CD now. Perhaps the best CD of the year.......2002-11-23

I cannot recommend Christine Andreas's new CD more highly. It may well be my favorite CD of 2002 (and that is QUITE high praise in a year in which Audra McDonald came out with a new disc from someone who worships the water she walks on). "Here's to the Ladies" is simply astonishing.

I will say that this disc takes a couple of listens to appreciate fully; not because there is anything wrong with it, but because it does create a bit of a disorienting experience, since some of the songs are performed very much "in character," while others reflect an interpretation that would not work in the context of the show from which the song comes. For example, I have never heard a more intoxicating and persuasive performance of "I Could Have Danced All Night," which clearly shows why Ms. Andreas's performance in a revival of "My Fair Lady" was such a success. On the other hand, I have never heard "Moonlight Lullaby" sung in a way that smolders with sex appeal as the one on this disc. While it is a fabulous and totally appropriate performance, it would not be one given by Annie Oakley.

But listening to each song solely in the context of this disc, almost every one is a gem. (The only song I don't absolutely love is "Some People." This song is one that cannot be divorced from the character who sings it, and Ms. Andreas has to work too hard at it, and can't completely camouflage the fact that she, apparently, she is just too bright and good-natured a person ever to play Rose effectively.) And because of the uniform high quality of the performances, it is hard to have a favorite among them. Nevertheless, I will say that her renditions of two songs are darned near definitive.

First, although Ms. Andreas has a voice that sounds much younger than Angela Lansbury's, she would make an outstanding Mame. Her "If He Walked into My Life" is breathtaking and heartbreaking. And her interpretation is profoundly moving even taken out of the specific context of the show; any mother, or for that matter anyone who has had a mother, can feel deeply the pain and insecurity of a person questioning the decisions, acts and omissions she made in parenting.

Second, in "Will He Like Me?" Ms. Andreas seems to incorporate the best aspects of Barbara Cook's and Barbra Streisand's two different but equally affecting interpretations of this song but, nevertheless, produces something that is wholly her own and is very moving and involving.

As you can see from just the few songs I've mentioned specifically, the material on this CD is rather diverse. And through it all, there is scarcely a note sung on this disc that is less than flat out gorgeous. If Ms. Andreas can only get a role with which she can get the kind of widespread attention and acclaim she deserves, she will certainly one day be one of "the ladies" on someone else's tribute disc.

This CD has not been out of my player since I got it several weeks ago, and I can't imagine that anyone interested in this type of music would not be similarly enchanted by it.
