Listening to this CD brought back a lot of memories of some great songs. I had forgotten how many songs Hank wrote. The quality of the recording is pretty decent, considering that some of the music was originally recorded a long time ago. There's quite a number of songs that have been recorded by others later, but Hank was the guy who wrote them...

I remember Hank. He could not write a bad song if he tried. The majority of his songs were about life, love and living. Often I saw myself in his songs.

To me, this collection is the best-of-the-best of Hank. If you like a good love song that tells a story, you will love this CD -- all 20 songs.

Best Single Disc of Tammy's Solo Hits, But Far From Complete.......2003-07-25

Tammy Wynette was the country queen of unstable domesticity. Her tear-stained voice conveyed the effects a rocky marriage has on the kids in such sagas as "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," "Bedtime Story," "I Don't Wanna Play House," and "Kids Say The Darndest Things." She'd try her best to make a relationship work, as evidenced on her signature tune "Stand By Your Man" and "Run Woman Run," but when that wasn't ultimately possible, she would resign herself to getting on with her life the best way she knew how, be it hesitantly ("Til I Can Make It On My Own," "Til I Get It Right"), regretfully ("One Of A Kind," "You And Me"), or defiantly ("Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad"). Tammy did record quite a few thoroughly upbeat hits, such as the rousing "Good Lovin' (Makes It Right)" and "Singing My Song," but it is the heartbreakers that Tammy did better than anyone and for which she will always be associated.

This collection - the strongest single Wynette disc available - contains twenty of her best solo singles - including all of those mentioned above - released between 1966 (her debut "Apartment # 9") and 1978 (the defiant "Womanhood"), the lone major omission from this period being her spinetingling "Another Lonely Song." Thus, none of her celebrated collaborations with George Jones (get their collection 16 Biggest Hits) or even David Houston (on "My Elusive Dreams") are found here, nor such latterday solo toe-tappers as 1979's "They Call It Making Love" and 1982's "Another Chance." Until an expanded single disc of Tammy's best comes along, the only place to get all of these recordings in one place is her box set Tears of Fire (which contains a lot of filler).

Yes, there are some re-recordings on this collection, but, they are tastefully done and still worth a listen. I could not imagine what Country Music would be without Lefty and Webb, and this collection shows you just how much country music owes to Mr Frizzell. If you are a true country music fan, you'll recognize every one of these numbers, but there are some real standouts here, to include: "Cigarettes & Coffee Blues" and a great version of "Gone, Gone, Gone". The production is fine and other than the remakes, there really is nothing to complain about. B+

too many re-recordings for my taste.......2002-07-28

That's right, this is a collection of mostly the 60's countrypolitan stereo remakes of the 1950's classics with a sprinkling of originals from the 1960's but the re-recordings are definitely enough to let you all know that this CD is not recommended and that I recommend the Legacy "Look What Thoughts Will Do" 2 CD set with only the originals. It may be a little higher priced but it delivers what it promises, the originals. The disc is rated 1 star for the heavy amount of re-recordings (many awful performances) and another star for the sprinkling of originals.

Bought this CD and loved it. Played it for a friend who had to have one. Now he plays it constantly. Says it's the best CD he's heard in years. Nothing but great songs from a great singer. I have to agree with my friend. There hasn't been a CD on the market with this much good slow dancing country music in a long while. God bless the people who put the package together because it really is the Greatest Hits of Mel Street. I know, I grew up wanting to be a singer like Mel Street.

The young voice is missing on this one. I have some of the same songs on vinyl records. If I had listened to it first, I would not have bought it. It might be OK for someone not familiar with the original recordings.

I am really tired of all these people going around and giving one star ratings for every album of remakes just because it's an album of remakes!!! I suppose they would give someone a bad concert review because their live vocals were not the original recording! Judge each individual recording on it's own merits please (1) are the vocals good? (2) are the songs good? (3) is the production good? Ok, these remakes are not as an outstanding a production as the originals yet these are still very enjoyable tracks with Kitty singing remarkably strong well into her senior years.

Classic country songs, but not classic performances/productions. Instead these are cheaply produced remakes. If you are at all particular about such concerns as I am keep, keep looking. As seen on TV - who cares?

Even though these are old songs this is a good CD. I like it mostly for the love/sad songs. She can really get to you with her voice. Worth buying.

Outstanding collection of "The First Lady of Country Music".......2004-06-28

I picked up this disc recently to replace a woefully inadequate 10 song collection I had purchased on vinyl a decade ago. Let me tell you this one is the real deal. After her debut single "Apartment #9" hit the Top Country Singles chart back in 1966 Tammy Wynette would go on to totally dominate these charts for the next decade. During her "salad" days from 1967 through 1976 Tammy would amass a total of 17 #1 country hits. And her hits with her then husband George Jones are among the finest country duets of all-time. Although "Anniversary: 20 Years of Hits" features only about half of her really big hits it should be more than adequate for most fans and collectors. Her most popular and familiar tunes are here including "D-I-V-O-R-C-E",
the heartbreaking "I Don't Wanna Play House" and the tune that would become her signature song "Stand By Your Man" You will also find three duets with George Jones including "We're Gonna Hold On", "Golden Ring" and "Two Story House". But perhaps my favorite song on the disc is 1973's #1 smash "Kids Say The Darndest Things". The included liner notes here were somewhat disappointing but all in all this is a very fine collection. For those diehards seeking more of Tammy's music check out her 3 CD box set "Tears of Fire" released in 1992. Sadly Tammy Wynette passed away in 1998. Later that year she was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

A Legacy of Hits.......1998-07-22

Although it has been over a decade now since this tribute to the First Lady of Country Music's many hits was released, it is still one of the best chronicles of the style, sound and emotion that made Wynette the "queen of heartache" in a country song. But remember, the 20 cuts here are just the tip of the iceberg. There are MANY more musical gems out there by this legendary performer waiting for your enjoyment!

Especially now after her untimely demise, it is wonderful to be able to hear ALL of her infamous recordings of the last 20 years. The sound is clear and creates a visual picture of this great lady of country music. Since most of her older recordings are worn out or lost, I was ecstatic to find this collection. Ugh... All songs are re-recorded or alternate versions.......2007-04-21

I bought this album expecting to hear my favorite Johnny Paycheck songs, but I was disappointed with it. All of the songs are re-recordings or alternate versions.... Not the versions of the songs that you've heard on the radio and know and love. The information on the CD does not provide any indication of when these songs were recorded, but it sounds like they were recorded by a MUCH OLDER Johnny Paycheck than the original recordings.

Heaven's Almost As Big As Texas -- the version on this album doesn't have any of the punch of the original.

I subsequently bought The Soul and the Edge, and was much happier with that, thought to get Heaven's Almost As Big as Texas, I ended up also ordering the album, Take This Job and Shove it.

Oh well.

LORETTA TELLS OUR STORIES.......2005-10-31

I LOVE LORETTA -- THEY (The producers of records) back in the 40s and 50s said that WOMEN WILL NOT BUY WOMEN. So, there were no big female stars. Then came PATSY CLINE she started a trend. She was the greatest.

Loretta came on the scene and started a revolution in the country music. She sang about the facts of life -- the other woman -- the pill (the first time I heard it on the Radio in Chicago was the last time.) It was so shocking it was banned in Chicago!! But we bought her record by the hundreds, thousands. And proved that women WOULD buy women. And she went on to write about life, love, happiness and unhappiness. SHE IS TREMENDOUS. SHE IS TALENTED. And she is beautiful.

20 Greatest Hits contain all the big hits and included one song I could not find "We've Come A Long Way, Baby" on any other cd! I highly reccommend this disc with all of Loretta's big hits and the above mentioned song. GOOD OLD COUNTRY MUSIC AT IT's BEST !

I think Loretta Lynn is the greatest country singer of all time. I have most of her albums. I grew up listening to my mother sing along with Loretta on the radio.

I don't consider myself a country music fan. I happened to buy this album out of curiosity after watching "Coal miner's daughter." It was an eye-opening experience to listen to this record. Not only does she tell heartfelt life stories, she also sings them beuatifully. Whether she is singing upbeat tunes like "They don't make'em like my daddy anymore," or slow ballads like "When the tingle becomes a chill," she touches your heart with achingly honest emotion filled vocals. I am not ashamed to admit that I get goosebumps whenever I hear "Coal miner's daughter."
