This is not a review about Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon's hair. However--as any self-respecting fan knows--in country music, after proving you can pluck a guitar and carry a tune, the power of the right hairstyle is not to be underestimated. Johnny Cash, in fact, was famously vain about his locks--perhaps one of the few things he was vain about--and many a guitar store employee can attest to the fact that when the Man in Black came in to buy his special brand of guitar pick, his hair was dyed a jet black more often seen on a boy of 20 than a man of 60. In any case, Phoenix and Witherspoon's performances as Johnny and June Carter Cash succeed more in the style and hair department than in their musicality. Phoenix fares better than his co-star in reinventing the Cash mystique, and his sweet, almost earnest interpretation of "Get Rhythm" is as charming as it is honest. Unfortunately, the powerful song "Ring of Fire" is flat and wholly without the narrative pull it had when Cash sang it. And Witherspoon is simply not up to the warbling task she's faced with in singing as June Carter Cash. (To be fair, it's hard to know who would be, but the estimable Loretta Lynn or Tift Merritt would have had better luck). Carter Cash's honeyed gift with melody, and the largeness of her voice, honed over decades in live performance, is hard to replicate for even a seasoned singer, and predictably, Witherspoon falls short of the mark. It's certainly seductive to imagine that playing a figure as compelling as Johnny or June would allow an actor to channel the soul and some of the talent of the artist, but the closest this record comes is in "Cry, Cry, Cry," where Phoenix's gravelly voice offers the same sustained thrill that made Johnny Cash irresistible--to June and his fans. --Megan Halverson

4 out of 5 stars Not a carbon copy.......2007-07-08

Within the liner notes of the gem of a CD, the director of the movie "Walk the Line" was quoted as saying he wasn't looking for a Johnny Cash impersonator, but for somebody who could make the legend come alive.
I personally really like Joaquin Phoenix' smooth, sexy voice. My favorites are "Get Rhythm" and "Walk the Line."

I strongly reccommend this CD.

The music was wonderful. I think Reese Witherspoon needs to do more signing. I certainly would buy her CD

Disappointed with this CD lacked body and character music sounded thin and repetative

A wonderful movie. Joaquin Phoenix was ideal as the young Johnny Cash - 19 to 37 years, The producers said they didn't want an actor and actress to portray John and June precisely and this is what I saw. The singing and guitar playing was right on. Joaquin should have won an Oscar also!

I bought the cd for my husband who is a huge fan of the movie. He absolutely loves the cd! He has practically worn it out listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars My first Johnny Cash CD.......2006-07-15

Even though I grew up in Johnny Cash's era, I never listened much to country music. I became interested in his music after the movie 'Walk the Line' came out. I listened to samples of many of Johnny Cash's CDs on Amazon before selecting this one. It's now one of my favorites. The selection of songs is good, as is the quality of the recording.

5 out of 5 stars You mean this album's been out two years with no reviews?.......2002-04-16

Back before country music became dumbed-down, there was a very eclectic mix of musical styles which melded to form what was known as "bad [boy] outlaw country blues," of which Johnny Cash was the exemplar. "I Walk the Line" is an appropriate intro to the man who carefully crafted his "man in black" identity. That identity always brought together the two seemingly opposite sides of Cash's personality: The "Folsom Prison" outlaw (Cash let the legend build around himself he was an ex-con) and the gospel-singing, deeply-religious man. No matter, Cash's intelligent, complex tunes are a slap in the face at the kind of facile "I'm just a simple [country person], and proud of it, hyuck, hyuck, hyuck" [stuff] that the media puts out today...

Today's aspiring country stars would do well to listen to Cash, who deftly mixes Nashville country, gospel and blues. His "Two Timin' Woman" is a heartbreaker, time and again.

2 out of 5 stars No John here.......2006-08-18

I liked the movie. The soundtrack is ok\. It's fun to listen to these guys, it makes me appreciate John's talent even more. But I was dissappointed in the fact that it said that this enhanced soundtrack had two videos ... after I got it I found out that the videos aren't really in this package you have to take this CD insert it into your computer and go to a website to see those videos ... I'm not computer savy and I haven't seen any video yet ... this [..] sucks. Why didn't they just include the videos as a separate DVD in this package(like they did with John's "Hurt" video), guess they wouldn't have been able to make extra $ by having smucks like me go to their website.

1 out of 5 stars If You Live in the USA, You Should Buy This as the Normal Soundtrack CD, for Regular Price!.......2006-02-21

To me, this looks like only the CD cover is different from the regular, domestic USA release of the movie soundtrack. The song list is identical to the domestic release, including the two bonus videos.

This expensive IMPORT is only for the most serious collectors, but everyone else can buy wisely and get just as good with the WALK THE LINE SOUNDTRACK, if you live in the USA.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

      Album Description

This Import pressing includes the bonus track 'Jackson' (Video Version-Joaquin Phoenix). In the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line, the film's creators took the risk of having the stars perform their own vocals, and it's a gamble that paid off surprisingly well. Joaquin Phoenix's take on the country icon is impressive; though he lacks the deft delivery of Cash on the opening 'Get Rhythm', the actor does capture the spirit of the Man in Black without resorting to mimicry, particularly on 'Cry Cry Cry', which faithfully replicates his vintage Sun Records sound. While those who enjoyed Walk The Line should seek out the original recordings by Cash and Carter Cash, this collection makes an enjoyable and fitting companion piece to the film. Sony. 2006.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent neglected work.......2004-05-22

Kennedy Rose only made two albums, which is a stone bummer. Their music falls in the progressive country/pop area. Imaginative instrumentation, beautiful vocal blending, and soaring harmonies make for very satisfying listening. I am astounded that their albums have been out of print, since it's hard to imagine that people would not like them. This album is slightly less of a revelation than "Hai Ku", their first, but worth buying if the only songs you got were "Safe in the Arms of Love" and "Walls."

        4 out of 5 stars Overlooked music.......2004-01-09

Kennedy-Rose were a duo of song writers and singers that made two albums before breaking up. This is the second one and is one of those special recordings that just got lost due to not really fitting into any category and being on a label(IRS)that was not promoting their product much (and was mostly considered an alternative type label.)This music is more in the progressive country/pop/rock genre and both of these women sing beautlfully together. Their harmonies soar and the production supports the music and the singing. One of the songs, "Safe In The Arms of Love" was covered by a country singer (unsure which one) but the original here is awesome. I get energized listening to it and love singing this stuff. It if joyous music.
Most of the songs deal with self-awareness and relationships. "Walls" is about the different walls we all build to protect ourselves. "Real World" is about trying to understand another persons perception without giving up yours or being rejected just because there is a disagreement ('Don't make me the enemy, where did we cross the line"). Some of the songs also include elements of Native American culture, one of the women seems to have some family connection here she shares in this music. Another song, "Without Your Love" was co-written by David Lanz and he plays piano on it - a beautiful track (He used this song as aninstrumental called "Miranda" on his own recordings).
The instrumental play on the backing tracks is great - there is not one bad note on the whole disc.BUY THIS - it is a missed treasure and has been out of print for a couple of years and will soon not be available any more. Don't miss music that can make a difference in your life.

5 out of 5 stars CASH AND PERKINS - THE ORIGINAL MOVIE SOUNDTRACK VERSION WITH GREGORY PECK.......2006-01-17

First, a bit of an update about movies and music of John and June Cash: The Golden Globes and Oscars to be handed out this year will surely be presented for the bio-pic of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. Their voices would be missed except for their collections of music and recordings left to us. However, this CD with these particular tracks on it was very difficult to find. It seems that Johnny Cash entitled so many of his recordings "I Walk The Line" so finding the original soundtrack from the movie with Gregory Peck took a little extra time. But, here it is folks, all the wonderful vocals and instrumentals provided as background for the movie. The songs tell the story almost as well as the movie, of a sheriff (Peck) who gets mixed up romantically with a grizzled bootlegger's young daughter (Tuesday Weld) whom he should have left alone and how the sheriff's world is brought down by his actions. The songs are as passionate as the movie. In this CD the entire versions of "I Walk The Line" and "Flesh and Blood" are recorded plus Cash's recordings of "Hungry" and "Ring of Fire" plus all the background music from the film. For Johnny Cash fans and film buffs this CD is the best. I happen to own the original 33 1/3 rpm of this title and have been searching for the CD version for some while. If you enjoy Johnny Cash's movie music (as opposed to his live versions) this is a pristine CD, recorded during the height of his career. In this CD his voice had not yet cracked by age or deepened by time, but was full and rich. It was not yet plagued by sadness but rings with determination and power. Mark the many key changes he makes in "I Walk The Line" and "Ring of Fire". In addition this CD includes "Little Fauss and Big Halsey" soundtracks (with the great Carl Perkins). As time passes this CD will be among the best of the soundtracks from the movies, and this year, with the bio-pic movie out about Johnny and June, this original movie theme music is a must for any serious Johnny Cash fan. A bargain at any price!

        5 out of 5 stars soundtrack heaven.......2003-09-15

I Walk the Line was one the best sound track ever recorded in the last 40 years. Walk the Line itself is familiar to anyone who's only heard even a few songs by Johnny Cash but there are some others like the passionate Flesh & Blood, Hungry and This Town that are also incredible. They tell the story of a man, Sherrif Henry played by Gregory Peck who has fallen in love with the one woman he should've left alone and the terrible things that follow as a result of that love. The Little Fauss songs are great too.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Bear Family Records edition (like most of them).......2001-02-11

This BFR edition is just great. Very complete picture of Johnny Cash'swork on two movies in 1970. For the movie "I WALK THE LINE", featuring Gregory Pack, Cash recorded the new version of his famous song. Here are couple of very rare songs, that deserve the best of collection, like Flash and Blood, This Town. On the other movie "LITTLE FAUSS AND BIG HALSY", feat. Robert Redford, Johnny Cash and his old pal Carl Perkins are in the great shape with some exellent instrumental songs. My advice for are true JC funs: a must have. This album is historical document, not for a listen on the sunday afternoon.
