Editorial Reviews

David Menconi, No Depression #33 May- June 2001
"...Cockrell’s voice is a wonder. High, dry and lonesome, it cuts right through you. "

Product Description:
Miles of Music Recordings proudly announces the release of Stack Of Dreams, the debut disc from North Carolina singer/songwriter Thad Cockrell. While he has been playing for barely five years, Cockrell possesses a natural talent that belies his years. Citing “heartbreak” as his true influence, Cockrell’s songs examine, with uncommon insight, the pain that love brings. His honky tonkin’ tunes like “Pretending” and “Hard Time Taking This Heart Break’n” hold a timeless quality, while slow weepers like the title track “Stack Of Dreams” and the gospel-flavored “He Set Me Free” tear at your heart. Cockrell’s clear tenor burns with a soulful yearning that aches with anguish while still offering a glimmer of hope.

With production under the masterful touch of the legendary Chris Stamey, Stack Of Dreams was created out of true devotion and dedication - appropriate emotions for music that emanates so directly from the heart. Cockrell’s skillful backing band, the Starlite Country Band features ex-Whiskeytown-er Skillet Gilmore on drums, while fellow Whiskeytown alumnus Caitlin Cary performs a duet with Cockrell.

“To make this record Thad and the band spent one day singing and playing live in the studio, then overdubbed harmonies and a few keyboards parts afterwards. “He Set Me Free” is taken from a live television shoot and “Together Again” is a single-take duet with Caitlin Cary, with the steel and fiddle parts added later” - Chris Stamey

It’s rare that a debut record sounds this emotionally and musically rich, but Thad Cockrell is a rare talent.

5 out of 5 stars Ryan Who?.......2003-03-13

Forget all these Ryan Adams comparisons. Thad Cockrell makes alt-country's resident singer/songwriter/egomaniac pale(r) by comparison. Think 'South Mouth' era Robbie Fulks and you're getting warmer. Cockrell's got a serious country voice, better than any of the empty hats out there now. In a perfect world, he'd be married to Faith Hill and topping the country charts.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album nobody heard in 2001........2002-05-10

What a voice! What songs! The real deal indeed.

His song "Why" is an all time favorite.

At once traditional, but not hackneyed, artists that Thad are what we need these days. There is nothing fake about this album. Recorded in a week with Chris Stamey (who has alos produced outstanding albums by Caitlin Cary and Alejandro Excovedo - both worht your money).
