Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars "I Need You to Survive" is brilliant!.......2006-08-17

I am the Artistic Advisor and one of the Founding Directors, and current music directors of the Colorado Springs Children's Chorale. I have had the opportunity to hear, and share several concerts with the unbelievable Chicago Children's Choir and their amazing Directors and Accompanists in Japan, Des Moines, and Chicago. Josephine Lee's direction of "I Need You to Survive", a gospel piece written in commemoration of 9-11, is masterful. I recommend this heartfelt album, giving it and the Chicago Children's Choir my highest praise. Congratulations to the Chicago Children's Choir on their 50th Anniversary!

5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2005-06-12

This CD is amazing. I am in a local county children's choir and we have been lucky enough to meet a few of the Chicago Children's Neiborhood Choirs. On one of our tours, we actually got to observe a rehersal of the Chicago Children's Concert Choir. They inspired me so much with their beautiful music, and I still can't beleive that kids that are around my age can produce such a great sound with their voices. They are litterally one of the best choirs in the world, and I can completely see why. I bought this CD because I just couldn't get enough of their music.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2005-03-25

Open Up Your Heart is a true classic. I bought it after hearing the Choir on Fox News in the Morning and just love it. It is a must have and makes a great gift!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing display of children's voices.......2005-03-21

This album is a prime example of the amazing abilities that children have. The CD has a wide variety of amazing music and is just overall great to listen to! It is entertaining for everyone! It is a great form of entertainment!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Choir....Amazing Music!.......2005-03-15

The Chicago Children's Choir, now almost 50 years in existence, has never sounded like this. It simply has to be the most incredible children's choir in the world. This CD is so representative of the ethos of the choir in its choice of songs from around the world; some protest, some pastoral and some popular. The artistry is stunning. These young people are so talented and yet such a performing unit. They have obviously been trained by a very gifted director who knows how to get these talented young people to work together and individually to create such wonderful music. This CD, their first in studio production, truly does open up the heart and makes it sing!

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

    4 out of 5 stars They're playin' country music........2007-03-20

This Buck Owens album was recorded at various sessions between August 1965 and April 1966. There were an incredible four #1 Country hits on this album ("Open Up Your Heart", "Think of Me", "Waitin' in Your Welfare Line" and "Sam's Place"). The album was somewhat of a departure for Buck; instead of the usual mix of leads performed by Buck and various Buckaroos, Buck sings all the leads. Aside from the hits, the other songs on the album are pretty good, too. This is a typically solid Buck Owens album. The CD adds two bonus tracks, which are the single versions of "Open Up Your Heart" and "Think of Me". These are basically the same as the album versions, except they are in mono instead of stereo.

5 out of 5 stars Solid and thoroughly enjoyable.......2007-01-07

This album shows off what a great innovater Buck was. The highlight is the array of styles that Buck merged to create the Bakersfield sound jump out of the tracks here, like the Mexican guitar influence in "Heart of Glass" and the truly awesome "Think of Me", the surf influence in "Cadillac Lane", and the hillbilly picking on "Open Up Your Heart". Buck was never the greatest lyricist, but he's got some good stuff to work with here in "Heart of Glass" and "Waitin' in Your Welfare Line". I use this album to party and also to mellow out, the guitar licks are just plain relaxing. The only thing missing is Don Rich's hillbilly guitar and vocals are a little underused compared to albums like "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail", but this is still my favorite Buck Owens album.

    5 out of 5 stars Another Good'n.......2006-10-06

Here's a 14 song collection from Buck's Album "Open Up Your Heart", provided as a re-release by Sundazed Records. They've done a spectacular job with this effort, as they have done with the remainder of Buck's Studio Albums; you really need to check out the entire collection. This CD contains some of Buck's best work, including "Think Of Me", a Nat Stuckey penned "Waitin in Your Welfare Line", and a rolicking "Sams Place". While the majority of the songs are Buck Owens' penned, there's also contributions from the great Red Simpson and of course, the legendary Don Rich. Get this one while it's still available.

4 out of 5 stars Buck Owens Scores Again.......2000-06-17

This album is a sleeper! It carries a lot of bang for the Buck in that the songs are all solid, consistently played gems. The lead-off title track features James Burton on lead guitar, in what is for him a rare display of guitar prominence. His playing is crisp, tough, and there is a generous helping of it. All the songs are recorded quite well, with nice punch to all the instruments. Buck's vocals as well as his writing likewise are of consistently high quality.

4 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned Sincerity.......2006-12-30

This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst recordings ever made.......2006-05-10

This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.

    2 out of 5 stars Pete's Dad.......2005-12-11

I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.

4 out of 5 stars A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars In Madonna's Sexually-Charged Dark Age Was This Beauty.......2003-07-11

Rain was the fifth and final single to be taken from Madonna's Erotica album. Released in July 1003, the song peaked at No.7 in the UK and spent a total of eight weeks on the chart. The song closed the lid on a number of fairly unsuccessful releases from the Erotica album, and didn't bode well for the future of Madonna's career.

Rain begins with a wonderful settling tune and what sounds like the pattering of rain on a tin roof before Madonna sings "I feel it. It's coming," before the song drops and Madonna sings the fabulous first chorus, "Rain. Feel it on my fingertips. Hear it on the window pane. Your love's coming down like rain. Wash away my sorrow, take away my pain, you're love's coming down like rain." The first verse then starts where Madonna sings, "When your lips are burning mine and you take the time to tell me how you feel. When you listen to my words, and I know you've heard. I know it's real. Rain is what the thunder brings. For the first time I can hear my heart sing. Call me a fool but I know I'm not. I'm gonna stand out here on the mountain top 'til I feel your..." She then sings the chorus, before moving onto the second verse, "When you looked into my eyes and you said goodbye, could you see my tears? When I turned the other way, did you hear me say I'd wait for all the dark clouds bursting in a perfect sky. You promised me when you said goodbye, that you'd return when the storm was done. And now I'll wait for the light, I'll wait for the sun 'til I feel your..."

I think the lyrics to this second verse are excellent, and definitely the best part about the song - they are very rich and so full of life. Madonna then sings a third verse, before a kind of engine revs up and Madonna sings, "Here comes the sun! Here comes the sun! And I say, never go away!" Madonna's vocals are sunlit with excellence and beauty, and she then goes on to a spoken section of the song where she speaks, "Waiting is the hardest thing. It's strange I feel like I've known you before. I tell myself that if I believe in you. And I want to understand you. In the dream of you. More and more. With all my heart and all of my soul. When I'm with you. That by sheer force of will. I feel like a magical child. I will raise you from the ground. Everything strange. And without a sound you'll appear. Everything wild. And surrender to me. To love." It may not may sense when reading the lyrics, but if you actually listen to it, you'll find that it does as Madonna speaks one line, but at the same time, she speaks the next line, and so on. This can obviously not be done in one take, so Madonna will have recorded her vocals for the first lines, then sang over a played back of the first. It's confusing, but works well! The chorus then repeats a few more times with a wonderful and joyous violin playing in the background, before Madonna sings "RAIN!" and the song ends wonderfully.

The video to Rain is beautiful. We see Madonna with short black hair looking wonderful in a covered-up outfit moving around on a stage in front of flashing cameras and light bulbs singing the song. She also stands behind a water-filled screen with an anonymous lover kissing him. Madonna also sits on a chair, looking around, listening to her headphones, writing stuff down and lots of other ordinary things! In a nutshell, it's very different to the dominatrix style Madonna we were shocked by just four videos previously with Erotica. In conclusion, Rain is a wonderful ballad with a chilled video to accompany it.

This UK edition was available in 12" Picture Disc, but there's no more than a different cover.
