Album Description

This NY-based studio collective consists of Matthias Bossi (Skeleton Key, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), Joel Hamilton (Sparklehorse, Elvis Costello), Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, Frank Black, They Might Be Giants), and Carla Kihlstedt (Tom Waits, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum). With guests Carla Bozulich, Megan Reilly, Jon Langford, David Thomas, Mike Watt, and Tom Waits, their debut bills itself as "a tribute to the American Rust Belt". They paint a haunting modern-day portrait of cities like Cleveland, Youngstown, Toledo, and Detroit; places that once were the definition of American motivation, progress, and industry, but now are home to ruined monuments of a bygone era. The sonic landscape is painted with scraping, swirling guitars, soaring string arrangements, rupturing bass, and plate-shattering drums.

5 out of 5 stars Best album of 2007?.......2007-06-05

I bought this, to be honest, to be a complete-ist. I am a huge fan of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and having heard a couple tracks on the bands' Myspace page, I figured I'd pick this up to make sure I had everything I could from every member.
We-hell, was I in for a shock. This album is AMAZING. Guest vocalists include: Carla Bozulich (Evangelista), Wu Fei, Mike Watts, Megan Reilly, and others. Songs like, "View From the Watertower", the title track, "Traineater", and "Salina", are haunting, lingering pieces that stay with you for hours. Tracks like, "Pray" (featuring Tom Waits), "Red Apple Boy", and "Boomtown", are edgy, driving, but unsettling. Nothing I put into words will do this album justice, so just do yourself a favor & pick it up. For fans of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Residents, Patty Smith, & good music everywhere. Seriously, no matter what you like, you will like something on this record.

4 out of 5 stars a gem.......2006-08-02

Nevermind the 3.5 review. This album is a gem to those familiar with the works of Carla or other musicians involved. However; if not thought posssible it is more of an acquired taste than SGM or Secret Chiefs. The compositions within this album play a lot more on minimalism and abrasive soundscapes. I'd give it a five star rating if not for the risk of you not liking the unique sound that this album/band has to offer; but have settled for 4 with a warning that if you come expectations for SGM or secret chiefs you might find yourself disapointed. However; if you come looking for compositions that tweak more with sublteties in their tunes you can aprreciate this album for all it is worth.

3 out of 5 stars SGM light..........2005-07-15

Don't expect the kind of intensity or complexity that you'll find on a Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or Secret Chiefs 3 album. The Book of Knots, though consisting of SGM-members Carla Kihlstedt and Matthias Bossi, is far more predictable in it's melodies and song structures that one might expect and may not be a challenging enough listen for the average avant-garde/prog fan. There are some gems here (like "Tugboat" and "Frank's Funeral") and the dreamy atmosphere and Kihlstedt's creepy vocal approach may help captivate the listener. ...if only for the first 25 minutes. 3.5 stars.

    Product Description

In the mid 1990s a closely-knit St. Louis music community brought together a collective of talented musicians rendering such bands as Wagon and Nadine. Danny Kathriner, Chris Peterson (both of Wagon), and Todd Schnitzer (formerly of Nadine) have worked together since the inception of these bands and have now joined in a refined effort called Half Knots. This collection of songs from their second CD is often ambient and melancholy and yet at times purely driving. Danny's introspective lyrics weave effortlessly in rich layers of dulcimer, mandola, guitar, electric piano, organ and strings. Simply put, this is a smart and most impressive release by these three friends from way back. This is Half Knots. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars King of Catch.......2004-10-29

Mac McAnally's "Knots" is a CD I continually pull off the shelf. No matter how hard the day, it sets your toe to tapping, puts a smile on your face & some cheer in your heart and gets you singing along. My favorite track is the hook-laden "Take It Easy (All I Know I About Love)," which has to be one of the catchiest tunes of all time. The story of the cleaning lady whose homegrown wisdom is overheard by a psychologist and turned into a blockbuster self-help enterprise always puts a smile on my face. McAnally must be cousin to Canada's Colin Linden or Texas' "Randy Weeks" with his sense of rock & bounce. "Good For Nothin'" is another tune whose driving guitar rocks you off the chart while Mac celebrates the attractions of lethargy. "The Knot" is a great midtempo country track about those who've experienced love lost, "And friends if you never knew love...turn off this song, but if you've had true love & it's come & gone, I'd have to say there's a good chance that you have a knot in your stomach to look forward to." "There I'll Be" is another catchy midtempo romantic track, "Whatever the future holds, God only knows; but one thing I can see, wherever you are, there I'll be." "Down the Road" is another midtempo country track with Paul Franklin's steel guitar adding country spice, "Her mama wants to know am I washed in the blood or just in the water; Her daddy wants to know if I make enough to take his daughter." McAnally's "Knots" shows him at the top of his game in a consistently strong body of work for numerous labels since the 70s. For as wonderful as he is, he's marvelously unknown. Don't let this gem pass by! Bravo!

      Album Description

Janet Maguire (b. 1927), an American composer who has spent most of her adult life in Europe, studied composition and orchestration with René Leibowitz in Paris and co-authored Thinking for Orchestra with him. Deeply influenced by the European avant-garde composers of the 1950s and 60s—Stockhausen, Ligeti, Nono, and Xenakis in particular—her musical output is defined by an interest in extended instrumental and vocal timbres, free and non-metric rhythms, and non-tonal pitch structures. Her compositions, however, although very much a part of this tradition, are not bound by the strict demands of that aesthetic, and in her writing she draws freely from ideas, forms, and sounds of European classical music, as well as those of Oriental and indigenous musics, to create a unique and personal universe. Her elegantly crafted works blend a pronounced lyrical strain with a great sensitivity to timbre. Compositions evolve organically, mostly avoiding conventional patterns of development. Novel timbral effects—achieved either by simple or more complex means—are judiciously used to intensify drama. The Cummings Lieder are given spare, delicately embellished settings as befit their suggestive and elusive utterance; Invenzione and L'Altro Quartetto feature virtuosic writing for augmented string quartet (by humming in the former and light percussive effects in the latter); Così and Lace Knots are miniature vocal scenas. Per Acqua, for two choirs, one all men, the other all women, is inspired by a Venetian story of unrequited love, while Inno a Dio is a profound expression of faith; both deploy a rich and affecting variety of choral effects. Haunting, jewel-like in their succinctness and concentrated emotion, this rich array of chamber and choral works reveal a distinctive composition! al voice worthy of broader notice.

      Album Description

produced by Todd Sickafoose "The World is Bound by Secret Knots is the latest exploration by San Francisco based singer songwriter Noe Venable and released on her own label, Petridish Records. Made over the course of a number of months, the CD was forged in the project studio of producer and bass player Todd Sickafoose.

Sonically, Secret Knots finds Noe and her Trio (Alan Lin on violin, Todd Sickafoose on bass) continuing to push boundaries, both sonically and in the arrangement of the songs, with a much stronger emphasis on rhythm than any of Noe's previous albums. Added to the mix are drummer/percussionist Dan Morris (Rufus Wainwright, Smashing Pumpkins), playing a plethora of percussion instruments from all over the world, and guitarist Nels Cline (Geraldine Fibbers, Nels Cline Singers)

Move over Regina Spektor and Sarah Slean. You've got nothing on Noe.

Noe Venable's voice is almost childlike in an angelic sort of way, but she's able to reach all the necessary high and low notes to move and sway your emotions.
Her lyrics are alluring, and each and every one of her songs stands out in one way or another.

      5 out of 5 stars gorgeous.......2005-03-16

This is a fantastic cd. The first cd to hit me this hard in over a year. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and Beautiful.......2004-03-08

Noe Venable is back with her soft haunting (yet powerful and emotional) voice. The music is a tad more complex this time out (as compared to "Boots") but it still very much in the same vein.
I could pick out my favorite songs, but I'd end up naming them all eventually. But "Black Madonna" really sticks out to me as does "Is the Spirit Here?". In both songs she does this great spoken, almost yelling thing that it at once alarming and cool.
"Feral" also has some great spoken stuff.
"Wings Again" reminds me so much of Sarah Slean it's eerie. It's a more melodic song that the others on here. The piano shows up a lot more here.
This is a fantastic CD, go get it NOW!

A promise never fulfilled, no matter how honest or well-intentioned, Knots and Crosses emerged from the late 1980s Boston indie scene just in time to score one local hit, "Creatures of Habit," a flaring jangle strong enough to suggest that the band, had they stuck it out, might have made good on their debts to folk-rock duos such as Richard and Linda Thompson and Gene Clark and Carla Olson. A dead-in-the-water deal with Island records and a wrecked marriage between lead singer Carol Noonan and singer-guitarist Alan Williams put an end to the band, though for this overview of their '90s recordings, Williams, Noonan (who has since developed a steady solo career), and guitarist Rick Harris returned to the studio to revisit two fine old and unrecorded songs. Listening back to the desperate interweaving of Noonan's and Williams's voices, the angry, angular guitar work, and song after song of emotional turmoil, one can hear why the band was once so well-regarded and glimpse a bit of what might have been. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars What a great CD! More, please........1999-08-06

Excellent! While Carol Noonan's vocals are wonderful (and very reminiscent of Maria McKee from Lone Justice), it's really Rick Harris that steals the show. His song-writing is soulful, and his guitar playing is sweet and electrifying at the same time. He is a major talent waiting to break out.

3 out of 5 stars haunting lyrics, and vocals make this album stand out........1999-08-02

I got this album, because i read that the band was from Maine. Having just spent a few years in Maine, i thought i should give it a go. I am very glad that i did. There was a time is a great colection of music. The haunting vocals on the track "waiting for you" give me chills, every time i hear it. Knots and crosses can be compared to, October Project, and maybe even Dar Williams. this cd is a must for the modern day folkie!!!

          5 out of 5 stars Finally !.......1999-07-22

It's been several years since I first heard this band, but I've been looking for their records ever since. Carol Noonan has a truly powerful voice and the band plays with a lot of dynamics and taste, especially the guitar player, Rick Harris. But in many ways the songs are what really stand out. "Creatures of Habit" was a big hit on the radio here in Boston, and it's the kind of song that makes you pull your car over by the side of the road to listen. And there's some really beautiful songs like "The Train Song" that are like little movies. In fact they kind of make a lot of different kinds of music, kind of folky, but also really rocking (not sort of rocking), most of all they write really catchy songs that you can't help but sing along with. I bought their first CD but somehow it disappeared from my collection (just goes to show you about lending out CDs). Now they've put out a collection with most of my favorite songs from that CD plus some great songs from their second CD which I never bought, but heard the songs in concert. PLUS there'e two new songs which are GREAT! I thought the band had broken up, but maybe this is the beginning of something new, (some shows or even a whole album of new songs????) I can only hope so.

A sweet, poetic, musical journey through a songwriter's life, with instrumental flavor not heard before. Half Knots debut album will linger in your mind long after you first hear it, beckoning you to listen again and again. Each experience lends your ears to different instruments or a more insightful lyric. A tremendous success for this independent group, anticipation to hear what they create next. Personal favorites: Springtime with an Angel, Intentions Good and Crayons.

5 out of 5 stars Americana At Its Finest.......2006-04-25

I had never heard of Half Knots before I downloaded a couple of free tracks from No Depression magazine's website. On the strength of the two songs, I ordered the album and am very glad I did. Simply stated, Americana rock music doesn't get any finer than this. The songs are all midtempo country rock, but the songwriting is uniformly excellent. All too rare in today's music world, it is an album meant to be heard as a whole. It creats a sweetly somber mood from the opening notes and never falters throughout. The best comparison I can think of is a cross between The Vulgar Boatmen and Saturnine, for those fortunate enough to be familiar with those two obscure-but-great bands.

Here's hoping this band will be successful in developing a larger audience. On the strength of their fine debut album, they deserve it.
