How is a honky-tonk Christmas different than a regular Christmas? Well, the predominant color is blue, rather than the more traditional red and green, and the stockings aren't filled exactly the way they were when you were a little one. But when Alan Jackson sings the songs of a honky-tonk holiday, the spirit is as infectious as can be, whether he's exploring the secular side of the holiday (as on a moving rendition of Merle Haggard's "If We Make it Through December") or delving into the spiritual (as on his duet with Alison Krauss, "The Angels Cried"). The Chipmunks--Alan's special guests on the silly "Santa's Gonna Come in a Pickup Truck"--are a little out of place, but it's a little too Grinch-like to dwell on that one flaw. --David Sprague

This album is such great fun. I am an Alan Jackson fan and had to add this one to my collection. This is my second purchase of this album as my first simply vanished and I found Christmas without it just wasn't the same.There are some very jolly up beat tracks to get you in the Christmas spirit.I love it! A fine hick music holiday album!.......2003-10-11

Hey, if only **all** holiday albums cound be this much fun! Sure, there are several schmaltzy tracks, but that just goes with the territory... Good natured romps like "I Only Want You For Christmas" and "Honky Tonk Christmas" more than make up for it... And Jackson's voice is at its peak here, smooth crooning with a big-ole smile that comes out in every note. Plus a goofy song sung with the Chipmunks and a cover of Merle Haggard's "If We Make It Through December..." What more couldja want? Recommended!

Buck Owens almost single-handedly created the fabled Bakersfield sound that made such singers as Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam famous. And it's pure Bakersfield Buck through most of this record, with its borderline maudlin tunes about absent daddies, bulging families with a christmas shopping list that threatens to put them in the poor house, and moralistic songs such as "It's Not What You Give." I just ordered 3 copies of this album! One for me, one for my sister, and one for my parents! When I was a kid we had the Buck Owens "A Merry Hee Haw Christmas" Double Album. It had 10 songs from this "Christmas Shopping" album and 10 songs from the "Christmas With Buck Owens" album.

All I can say is you can't have one without the other. It's not Christmas in our house until we listen to Buck Owens.

This album is the best of the two in my opinion, although listening to only one is like eating a P.B. & J. without the jelly. It may still be good, but it won't be as sweet!! ;-)

Buck Owens Christmas albums stand the test of time like no other Christmas albums I've ever had.

There are songs on here that I loved as a kid ("Christmas Shopping" & "One of Everything You Got") and still love as an adult. You don't outgrow this album!

I'm not a big country music fan but this old time music proves to be a very up beat CD to bring Happy music ( with a couple exceptions) that we all can relate too. These songs that Buck sings, bring old fashion values that most Americans where brought up with.

I grew up hearing these songs at Christmas time. Warm memories. Christmas would not be the same without hearing Buck! My all time favorite Christmas songs. During the 70's, my parents would play both Buck Owens Christmas albums all day for weeks before Christmas.

Second of two classic Christmas albums.......2003-11-03

Buck recorded two Christmas albums back in the sixties. While I agree with most people that the first, Christmas with Buck Owens, is the better of the two, I don't think there's much to choose between them.

The set opens with the title track, a fun song about all the gifts that Buck has bought. This is followed by more Christmas cheer, with Christmas time is near and Jolly Christmas polka.

Then Buck completely changes the mood with All I want for Christmas is my Daddy. The song avoids explaining why Daddy is missing but the sadness of the little boy that Buck sings about is very clear.

After that song, the Christmas cheer returns for the remainder of the set, with Merry Christmas from our house to yours, Good old-fashioned country Christmas and many other interesting original songs.

For country music fans who want to get away from all the obvious songs, this set is ideal. But if you haven't got Buck's other Christmas album, buy that too.

Wonderful Classic Country Christmas Album.......2002-06-03

Buck Owens gives his all for a fantastic collection of unique Christmas songs.

If you are looking for songs far from the mainstream Christmas staples, this is the album for you. For anyone who ever was a child or has a child, you'll be able to identify with "One Of Everything You Got", a humorous song about children and there requests for gifts. And "All I Want For Christmas Is My Daddy", will surely tug at your heart strings.

The pride of Bakersfield has always done things his own way, which helps explain why you won't find too many shopworn carols on this swinging holiday set. Instead, Buck and the boys do their best to deliver the spirit of a good old-fashioned dust-bowl Christmas, complete with Western gear ("Santa's Gonna Come in a Stage Coach") and working-class sentiment ("Santa Looked a Lot like Daddy (Daddy Looked a Lot like Him)"). There's a good deal of melancholy running through songs like "Blue Christmas Tree" and "Christmas Ain't Christmas"--after a few listens, you get the idea that Buck's holiday "dinner" will be a few beers drunk alone at the honky-tonk down the road. It might not be the most cheerful album of the season, but Christmas with Buck Owens may just be the one most likely to stay lodged in your heart. --David Sprague

Great Classic Buck Owens.......2006-11-17

I love this CD! The twangy guitars and out front pedal steel work by Tom Brumley are spine chilling (for me anyway). Some people don't care for this sort of music though, so I've heard. "Santa Looked Alot Like Daddy" is a fun & clever song worth the whole CD (more recently recorded by Garth Brooks, but this original version is better in my opinion). If you like Buck Owens music, you'll love this one.

Essential Christmas Album.......2006-10-19

This is my all time favorite Christmas album...Alabama Christmas, and Jim Reeves Christmas album are up there too...
Buck's style is perfect for Christmas time, the original song writing is great. I actually am not a very big Buck Owens music fan outside of this Christmas album.
Bottom line.....the guitar players are AWESOME!!
My favorite song is Jingle Bells, but they are all great songs and hold many great memories from my childhood.
Must Buy!!!!!

Christmas Blast From The Past.......2004-12-11

My Mom recently bought me, my sister, and herself a copy of this CD. (Sorry to say she paid ALOT more through a mail order catalog)

My favorite Christmas memories are of listening to Buck Owens while my family put the Christmas Tree!

I think the reason this album stands the test of time is because nearly every song was original. Which is very rare in a Christmas album!

I love EVERY song on this album, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be a toss up between "Santa's Gonna Come In A Stagecoach" and "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy"

Hank Thompson was a honky tonk and Western swing singer from Texas and his 1964 Sundazed reissue will be a true gift to lovers of both genres. Thompson wraps most of his tunes in pedal steel, trimmed by the fiddles and piano of the Brazos Valley Boys, but it's his big, no-frills personal vocal style and handful of originals that make It's Christmas Time memorable and collectible. For this effort, Thompson penned "I'd Like To Have An Elephant For Christmas" (a perfect novelty flipside for "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas") and the even more charming "Mr. And Mrs. Snowman." For the more adult minded, there's his "Gonna Wrap My Heart In Ribbons" and a lovable oddity titled "Its Christmas Every Day In Alaska." If you like Texas swing, you'll like this one. I would have preferred a few more traditional songs, though. The Brazos Valley Boys are a fantastic band and really prove it on this one.

Hank Thompson is one of country music's all time greats and I can't tell you how delighted I was to see this reissue of this fantastic 1964 Christmas album. I highly recommend this album to not only Hank Thompson fans, but it should be in everybody Christmas collection in my opinion. You will love Hank's beautiful and smoothe voice and my favorite song from this album is Mr and Mrs. Snowman. You will love the sound of the Brazos Valley Boys. My darling Nafisah Anif will always be my Christmas angel.

A fine, fun holiday record, western swing with a honkytonk beat, with Thompson's jovial touch added to standards such as "White Christmas," "Silver Bells," "Rudolph," and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," as well as loopy Thompson originals like "I'd Like To Have An Elephant For Christmas" and "It's Christmas Every Day In Alaska." Thompson and longtime producer Ken Nelson bend the songs to their will, moulding each one to match Thompson's distinctive, instantly recognizable, bouncy hillbilly swing style. Best of all, is the gusto with which Thompson tackles each tune -- his delivery is vibrant and heartfelt; it may be just another goofy, cornball Christmas record, but it's lively and enjoyable, a cut or two above similar efforts by other artists. Plus, guitar whiz Joe Maphis provides a sparkling counterpoint to the band's infectious beat. Hey, even a curmudeonly country Scrooge like myself can get into this one!

Relaxing but generally upbeat.......2003-11-12

Merle's classic song, If we make it through December, tells the story of a father wondering how Christmas is going to be paid for. Daddy won't be home again for Christmas is an even sadder song - the title says it all. But these two songs are the only downbeat moments on an otherwise upbeat album.

Grandma's homemade Christmas card is a very touching story about a card that is not thrown out after the festivities are over. Santa Claus and popcorn is pure fun. Bobby wants a puppy dog for Christmas is about a lonely boy who wants company. Personally, I think Christmas is exactly the wrong time to introduce a puppy into a family - however, the song says that Bobby will get an electric train instead so I cannot complain about the song on those grounds. The remaining songs are Christmas standards delivered in the manner expected of Merle - excellent.

Don't be fooled: This release does not collect the country chart's biggest-ever holiday hits. If that was the case, then Gene Autry ("Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer") and Dolly Parton ("Hard-Candy Christmas") would have been included. What we get instead, though, is a swell, 10-song sampler of post-war country, Yuletide division, with a special focus on 1949 when both Eddy Arnold and Ernest Tubb scored two Top Ten Xmas hits apiece. The lone 1960s entry, Buck Owens's amazed "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy," is probably closest to contemporary country-rock tastes, while Tubb's quavering but sincere "Blue Christmas"--which amazingly charted three Decembers in a row--is still as sad a slice of holiday twang as has ever been put to wax. --David Cantwell

They'll be singing.......2004-12-17

This CD features Christmas songs that made it onto Billboard's Country chart. There are some good songs here that you don't find on CD too often. The original version of "Blue Christmas" by Ernest Tubb is almost worth the price of the CD by itself. There are some other great songs by the likes of Tex Ritter, Eddy Arnold and Buck Owens. Then again, "Jingle Bell Rock", great as it is, has been on about a million CDs already and isn't really a country song. It's also shocking that the King of Country Christmas Music, Gene Autry, is not represented here at all. It's still a good CD at a low price and it's worth purchasing.

Some classic stuff here.......2001-11-30

A fab collection of some not-often-heard gems from the country music wayback machine. I docked the collection one star for the inclusion of the much over-comped "Jingle Bell Rock" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", for several reasons: 1. Sure, they hit the "country" charts but they were much bigger "pop" hits, 2. Both are available on the Rhino "Billboard Pop Xmas Hits" series, "ISMKSC" on "1935-54" and "JBR" on "55-present" (as well as 20 billion other compilation CDs). It's redundant for folks who might want to buy all 3 of those discs. I'd rather they put on something by Dolly Parton, Alabama, you get the point.

That said, this is well worth acquiring. "Little Sandy Sleighfoot" is kind of hokey but grew on me, and the rest of the tracks are ace, especially "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" by Buck Owens.

WOW,It's official the songs in this collection (as stated on the inner liner notes)were selected by the World's Number One chart researcher Joel Whitburn,of Menomonee Falls,WI. Local boy makes good,or at least documents the achievements of those artists that hit the charts well. Dose that make this disc a must have? NO NO NO not to my ear. I'm thankful todays country has evolved greatly from its' roots back in the 40's & 50's. But what makes this record kind'a intresting is the historical significance of such songs as,Blue Christmas,Jingle Bell Rock,White Christmas,The Little Drummer Boy ,I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,and Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy---and the artists credited with charting them first. How many times have we all heard a cover of these classics ? Great set of Christmas country music.......2006-11-26

A great holiday collection, although the marketing of this set as a "redneck" album really is misleading... Actually, it's a rather classy set of country oldies, featuring folks such as Buck Owens, George Jones, Homer & Jethro and the Louvin Brothers, with more modern contributions from fellas like Dale Watson, Dwight Yoakam, John Anderson, Travis Tritt and the Tractors... The only moderately "redneck" tunes come from Charlie Daniels and Joe Diffie, but otherwise, this ain't as trashy as they might like you to think. Highlights include Red Simpson's jingly "Truckin' Trees For Christmas" and Asleep At The Wheel's "Xmas In Jail"; there's also the inevitable inclusion of Elmo & Patsy's "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer..." But hey, if you've gotta have that song for the holidays, this is a mighty fine record for it to be on! Highly recommended.

Bargain Priced and Rare Performances.......2005-11-03

This CD is a collection of Christmas standards sung by five legendary country music queens, Kitty Wells, Jean Shepard, Lynn Anderson, Donna Fargo, and Janie Fricke who each sing two songs. I think these tracks may be exclusive to this CD as I've never seen most of them elsewhere and at that bargain price, it's a must for country fans. Of note is Opry veteran Shepard singing out loud and clear in fine form like a real live Christmas bell and this is the first collection I've heard Lynn Anderson sing religious Christmas songs instead of the Rudolph/Jingle Bells variety.
