Ordinarily, when an album has a title like Hard Country, that's your first clue that the music inside is anything but. However, in the case of King's sophomore effort, the title does have some accuracy. At least the North Carolina singer is in the right ballpark most of the time, and he even hits a few out, such as the regretful "From Your Knees" and the swinging "A Man Can Dream." Billy Joe Walker Jr.'s production is big and bold, though bordering on bombastic at times, allowing fiddle and steel to ring out atop the brim. King has digested the vocal style of masters like George Jones and is convincingly sincere in most spots, even if some of the material is a bit translucent. --Marc Greilsamer

This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-14
The Eagles are great. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh. I'm sure glad Hell froze over for them. Not that their recordings as the Eagles have been any good since then, but at least we might get a chance to see them live in concert.
This CD is the 'Greatest Hits' I've been waiting for. No longer do you have to buy their 'Greatest Hits - 1971 to 1975' for $14 and also their 'Greatest Hits - Vol. 2' for $15, in order to get all of their best work. There are $16 worth of great songs on here, but it will cost you $20 for the CD on Amazon. The songs are: CD 1: Tracks 1,2,3,4,7,8,13,14,15 & 17; CD 2: Tracks 1,3,5,7,9 & 10.
Better yet, all of the songs I've listed are available on iTunes. So buy each of the 16 songs individually on iTunes and save yourself $4.
Hope this helps.

Three years ago, a 13-year old Taylor Swift set out to be a star and moved from Reading, Pennsylvania, to Nashville. By 14, she had a publishing deal, and by 15, a recording contract. In these days of Bianca Ryan (and before her, Tanya Tucker and LeAnn Rimes), many are called, but few are chosen. Swift, it appears, is one of the chosen ones. Her vocal talent is modest, though sweetly affecting, her style seemingly influenced by the radio hits of early Sheryl Crow and Michelle Branch, and perhaps Cyndi Thomson. And at times, her youthfulness shows--she encoded messages in the lyrics of her CD booklet, starting with the name of the boy who cheated on her from "Should've Said No" (the album's strongest offering). But in writing or co-writing all 11 songs on this debut, Swift demonstrates remarkable maturity, particularly in crafting a hooky, radio-ready chorus. Though she sounds ridiculous looking back from the perspective of an 87-year old woman on "Mary's Song," to her credit she mostly writes about what she knows--unrequited high-school crushes ("Teardrops on My Guitar"), teenage angst ("Tied Together with a Smile"), and complete immersion in starry-eyed romance (her breakout hit "Tim McGraw"). Swift has such wistful charm and tunefulness that only a curmudgeon could dismiss her, and in fact, more than 60,000 fans lined up to grab this CD the first month of release. No wonder Rascal Flatts and George Strait added her to their tours. Look out, Carrie Underwood--there's a new kid in town. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:

Guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Isbell was a driving force in the rousing postmodern Southern rock band Drive-By Truckers. Sirens of the Ditch is his solo debut. A resident of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Isbell clearly has Catholic taste in his roots rock. His backing band throws together a pleasant mélange of pedal steel, organ, strummed acoustic guitar, and heartfelt Americana vocals. At first, it sounds like something you've heard before a thousand times, by Ryan Adams or was that Bryan Adams. However, on closer inspection, there's a lot more going on. After rhyming "bitch" with "ditch" in the song "Ditch," Isbell throws in a line about "dancing to 'Purple Rain'" and you're drawn in, to a clearly delineated but poetic storyline and gorgeous melodies. Isbell's best songs will remind you of Richard Buckner, Raymond Carver, and Neil Young. "Dress Blues" might be the most sympathetic and awesome song about the Iraq war yet written. Huzzah. --Mike McGonigalProduct Description
Accomplished guitarist and songwriter Jason Isbell, formerly of Drive By Truckers (DBT), releases his debut solo album Sirens Of The Ditch. The album rocks with 11 tracks all written by Isbell kicking off with "Brand New Kind Of Actress", followed by the rocker "Down In A Hole", a swampy number featuring Muscle Shoals natives Spooner Oldham and David Hood. Isbell s songwriting skills shine especially on "Dress Blues" a pensive ballad about a high-school classmate who lost his life fighting in Iraq and "Chicago Promenade" a tribute to his late Grandfather.
Listeners caught glimpses of Isbell s skills on Drive-By Truckers records with tracks like "Danko/Manuel" and "Outfit".
Sirens Of The Ditch's mystical quality can be partially attributed to the FAME recording studio (Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman, Otis Redding) in Isbell s hometown of Muscle Shoals, AL where the album was recorded. A lot of old soul musicians came through here in the late 60s and 70s and helped define the Muscle Shoals sound, the lifelong Alabamian explains, so that influence was always in my environment, but on this record I really tried to capture that.
Co-produced by Isbell and Patterson Hood (DBT), Sirens Of The Ditch features Isbell singing lead vocals and playing guitar throughout, joined by Shonna Tucker (DBT) on Bass and Brad Morgan (DBT) on drums. Several musicians pop in for cameos including Spooner Oldham and David Hood (Patterson s father) on "Down In A Hole", John Neff (DBT) on "Dress Blues" and Patterson himself guests on "Shotgun Wedding".

The Sopranos have become considerably more than just the average psychically tortured New Jersey mob family next door. HBO's innovative, if distinctly murderous soap opera has become a modern cultural icon, one whose innovative pop music score is almost an equal supporting cast member. The term dizzying has been overused in describing strong soundtrack collections, but it just might not do this second volume of Sopranos music justice. Show creator David Chase, director Martin Bruestle, and executive producer Brad Grey are credited with this rich, cross-genre, multigenerational collection, but they tellingly thank a few score others. The contributions from usual suspect vets like Frank Sinatra, Dylan, Elvis Costello, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, the Kinks, Keith Richards (and the Stones), the Pretenders, and Ben E. King contain more than their fair share of musical and contextual surprises. But the collection's true appeal lies in its artistically oblique corners, which somehow embrace alt-rock (R&B tinged and straight up, courtesy of Pigeonhed and Cake, respectively), nouveau Aussie country (Kasey Chambers), traditional gospel and swampy blues (the Campbell Brothers with Katie Jackson, R.L. Burnside), Vivaldi (Cecilia Di Bartoli), and contemporary Neopolitan pop (Madreblu, Lorenzo Jovanotti). Even budding star Uncle Junior chimes in, with Dominic "Goldenthroat" Chianese lending a spare, heartfelt rendition of the traditional "Core'ngrato"; hang onto your kneecaps, 'N Sync! --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Opening with the methodical, hard-rocking "Cinnamon Girl"--still one of the singer-songwriter's most-hollered requests in concert--Young's second solo album introduces the cockeyed harmonies and sloppy, chiming guitars of Crazy Horse. His wide swings from soft-spoken country-folk ("Round & Round [It Won't Be Long]") to menacing metal (the punch line to "Down by the River" is "I shot my baby") indicate the multiple personalities in Young's future. His second album of 1969 broadcasts a sincere passion for the peace-and-love '60s (dig the long guitar solos) but also predicts the dark introspection of "Tonight's the Night." --Steve KnopperCustomer Reviews:
Old enough to change your name.......2007-07-19
The fact that songs like "Round and Round" are present on this album serve as a bit of a legend for the rest of Young's career. On one hand, you have the dark, hard-rocking band frontman, and on the other you have a sensitive song-craftsmen who molds melodies the way a skilled carpenter does cabinets. This dichotomy will become more and more apparent (and more polarizing) on subsequent Young releases, but here, it simply shows two sides to one of the most deservingly celebrated artists in rock history.

If they gave this album one of those "Deluxe Edition" jobs like they've
done with so many others such as the first Weezer album and Blind Faith and on and on. Out-takes,demo's,alternate takes/mix's....it would all be catnip to the millions who love this album.
Actually, now that i think of it....if a "Deluxe Edition" job isn't possible, they could make a nice pairing of this along with the Neil and Crazy Horse at The Fillmore 1970 CD. That would be pretty deluxe!
A Classic----Everybody Knows.......2007-05-14
What can one say about this album? Neil Young expanded beyond Buffalo Springfield with this one and, I think, came into his own as a considerable artist in his own right. With Crazy Horse, he examined and extended his creativity with pastoral landscapes, jagged-edged cliffs, outerworldly musings, and just plain country meets city sensibility. Not that it always makes sense, but that people is the magic of music. Interpretation is up to you, not the artist.
Even now, I am awed by the consistency Neil displays so early in his solo career. We are never relaxed, for one moment, that the sequence of songs will resemble sameness in any shape or form. It begins with "Cinnamon Girl" which, in some way, reveals the dilemma that many young people have a problem with. That is the in-between phase of being a child and adult. He wants to spend his life with her, but then again, "Ma, send me money". The need to be free but not quite there yet. This theme reveals itself in many of his tunes. It is a slow rocker but with such a memorable riff. Next up "Everybody Knows", a jumpy, sprightly groove that, again, reveals where he's at - between a dream and reality- essentially nowhere.
"Round and Round" is a slow acoustic sadness that, I feel at least, is about loss. A loss of yourself? Or perhaps someone close. "Down By the River", aside from allowing Neil to stretch his jagged lead guitar, proposes another dilemma for the astute listener. The protagonist is lead to possibilities with this woman - but is her non-compliance a reason to shoot her? Down by the River? An enigmatic song at best and I dare not ask Neil the meaning.
We then get to "The Losing End" which reveals an easy-going country groove with some electric guitars helping it along. The theme? Good ol' country heartache. A mainstay in that genre - now and always. The mood then changes, into some outerworldly, ethereal regret and deception. This song reveals a darkness of the mind, and this is brought forth so effectively with the inclusion of violins. An eerie offering, but so very different.
"Cowgirl in the Sand", I think, is one of Neil's most potent songs. It can be taken on many levels. It is hard drivin' (but, it takes on a whole new perspective if you heard him do the acoustic version). Neil pleads with her to stay in her company. But, her place of command is the desert. Desolation. And, this song tries, desperately, to make her see her worth. Neil knows she is a beauty. She feels she is "purple words on a gray background". I feel that this song is an aching plea. It also allows Neil to experiment with lead guitar breaks, gritty and rough and insistent on it's purpose. In all, a brilliant conclusion to a brilliant album.
This album (plus the next two- After the Gold Rush and Harvest) complete the superb triumvirate of Neil's early career. As we know now, he was to go on to more creative terrain. Some of it successful, some of it not so. In any event, plain and simple, he is an amazing artist and, I think, one of the greats in popular music.
This one is definitely a classic and well worth the investment.

An artist for all musical seasons, Neil Young returns to autumnal harvest mode on Prairie Wind, with homespun material and sing-song melodies that renew the spirit of some of his most popular releases. Yet the mood here is darker in its maturity than on Harvest and Harvest Moon--the previous releases in what now sounds like a trilogy--and the arrangements have greater range and aural depth, with Wayne Jackson of the soulful Memphis Horns, the Fisk University Jubilee Singers gospel choir, and a string section employed to striking effect. This is a song cycle of dreams, memories, family ties, and the passage of time--what is lost and what endures. The elliptical, epic "No Wonder," with its evocation of 9/11, ranks with the most ambitious songs of Young's career, while "Falling Off the Face of the Earth," "It's a Dream," and the bluesy title cut combine childlike innocence with unsettling experience. Spooner Oldham's church keyboards and coproducer Ben Keith's steel guitar reinforce the sound's sturdy simplicity. Young has released a lot of albums in different musical styles, but Prairie Wind feels like a homecoming, and ranks with his very best. --Don McLeese Recommended Neil Young Discography

PRAIRIE WIND IS THE ONE WE HAVE WAITED FOR !.......2007-05-01
This old guitar ain't mine to keep,
It's mine to play for a while,
This old guitar ain't mine to keep,
It's only mine for a while.
The song is performed on Hank Williams' old Martin guitar, and the singer realizes his guitar will outlive him, just as it has outlived it's other famous owner. Here For You is a father's touching letter to a daughter who has just left the nest, and like myself, many fathers of daughters will recognize themselves in this song, even if their daughters are still at home. The Painter is a song that would have fit well on Harvest or Harvest Moon, and offers the advice, "If you follow every dream, you might get lost". No Wonder includes some solid acoustic guitar work from Young, while an electric slide guitar wails, and Neil sings of an "old church on the hill", a "fallen soldier bell", and a senator that "took his money just like all the rest". Musically, the album features acoustic guitars, harmonica, pedal steel guitar, fiddle, electric guitars, a horn section, a church choir, piano, dobro, and an orchestra. He Was The King is a fun, rollicking, half satire, half tribute to Elvis, and the last song adresses a subject Young has been reticent about most of his career, his faith. In the hymn When God Made Me, Young sings about the world's and his own relationship with God.
Did He give us the gift of love,
To say who we could choose,
When God made me
When God made me.
Prairie Wind satisfies at every level. Musically, lyrically, emotionally. The prevailing theme is what Neil Young has on his mind at 60 years old, and as it turns out, these are the same things that most of of us have on our minds, too, whether we're 60 or not. Come to think of it, quite a few of Neil Young's albums are like that, but Prairie Wind also has images of Canadian geese, buffalo, Indian spirits, a weathered train station, old guitars, dreams, and a girl cousin that sings harmony.
Typical Neil.......2007-04-29
Friends, times and places come and go, Neil never fails to deliver. God bless
Canada for sharing Neil with us all these years. I first was made aware of Prarie Wind by watching the DVD of the Nashville concert with Emmylou. It
was spectacular by the way and I had to have the CD. It's the easiest five stars I've ever given out. The songs rattle around in my brain along with Neil's signature hardscrabble guitar riffs. There's not a bad song to be found on here. Prarie Wind (Blowing Through My Head) just makes me shake my head and wonder how Neil does it. No Wonder and Falling Off The Face Of
the Earth are outstanding.

The first stop for anybody new to Neil Young's music, this 34-song set (originally released in 1977) traces his growth from Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young to Crazy Horse to his Harvest band, the Stray Gators. The album defined Young to rock radio the way Hot Rocks determined which Rolling Stones songs would become classics, but this is more than a quickie greatest-hits collection. Rarities and hits--Springfield's "Mr. Soul," CSNY's "Ohio," and Young's "Cinnamon Girl," "Heart of Gold," and the closing "Long May You Run"--develop in thematic and chronological patterns. --Steve KnopperCustomer Reviews:

A Brilliant Musician..........2006-07-20
Oh to live on Sugar Mountain.......2006-05-28
Decade is a 2-CD anthology of many of Neil's best songs, among them is "Mr Soul, "Expecting To Fly" and "Broken Arrow". After the Springfield songs the CD moves into Neil's solo career including "The Loner", "Sugar Mountain", "Cinnamon Girl" (which is a perennial on classic rock radio), "Down By The River" (I was introduced to this song on a soundtrack from the movie "Strawberry Statement"), and the 11 minute guitar rift "Cowgirl In The Sand". It also includes a song from After The Gold Rush - "Southern Man". His days with Crosby, Stills Ansh and Young are represented by two of their best, "Helpless" and the politically charged "Ohio".
Overall this is a good overview of Young's work. It is a good sampler of Young's best work, although it is by no means exhaustive of all his works. It is both a great introduction to non-Neil Young fans and a great memory for us older Young fans who grew up with him. The liner notes on each song will give great insight on how and why he wrote the song. I would recommend reading his note on "Ohio".
If this is not THE comprehensive Neil Young CD, I can't think of one that is.
Namaste.
Solid idea, but some missteps.......2006-05-10
Neil's career is so long and varied that it's hard to put in a collection, even if you're only covering ten years (okay, they were his best ten years) and have three LP's/2 CD's to work with. And really, most of Neil's essential material is covered here, from his days with Buffalo Sprinfield (Mr. Soul, Broken Arrow) to his solo debut (Loner) to his years with Crazy Horse (Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand, Cinnamon Girl, After the Goldrush, Southern Man, Cortez the Killer, Like a Hurricane) to CSNY (Ohio) to his radio-friendly, overrated Harvest album (Needle & the Damage Done) to the infamous "Ditch trilogy" (Walk on, Tonight's the Night). But there are problems. Nothing from Rust Never Sleeps was included, but I won't complain about that because the album was released too late to be represented on Decade. (Still, why wasn't Powderfinger included on his recent Greatest Hits compilation?) More importantly, some of Neil's most essential material is STILL left out. I know I'm probably the only person in the world to think this, but where the hell is Last Trip to Tulsa? How about Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere? Only Love Can Break Your Heart? Alabama? Ambulance Blues? Find the Cost of Freedom? And come on, why are I Believe In You, A Man Needs a Maid and Harvest cluttering this up?
Oh well, Neil's always been an album-oriented guy, so a compilation of his would be hard to assemble. Still, some truly awful material manage to sneak in to replace some of his best.

By 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of "Tonight's the Night," he downshifts into darkness and Crazy Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians. Inspired by the overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a hypnotic cry of "why?" Even the relative party songs, "Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown" and "Roll Another Number," fit the album's bus-to-nowhere resignation. --Steve KnopperCustomer Reviews:
~Sending a Chill Up and Down my Spine~.......2007-06-29
It is filled with a lot of sadness, possibly Neil Young's most heartfelt work yet. Honestly the sadness shines through so purely that it makes me feel happier just listening to it.
I can really sense Neil Young's pain as he sings a song like "Tired Eyes" laid back and relaxing.
A few years ago I played this album every night after first buying it. It just struck a certain chord with me unlike any other Cd/record I own.
So honest and real, the grief felt after losing a close friend. I, like many people can really relate to 'Tonight's The Night'.
I can't count the number of times I sat down in the dark and drank 'til I could drink no more listening to the beauty that is Neil Young and this incredible record of 12 songs.
Although I grew up mostly listening to 80s and 90s Rock bands, 'Tonight's the Night' remains one of the Top best albums I will ever own.
- A Record that really does help after losing a Loved one.

The hype is justified.......2006-11-24
In other words, it's great rock and roll.
If you can't feel Neil and Crazy Horse kicking your a** with "Come On Baby, Let's Go Downtown", you really don't like rock and roll, do you?

Mere months passed between the release of Neil Young's mid-career milestone Rust Never Sleeps and this 1979 tour recording, which documents a late-'78 San Francisco performance. Indeed, Live Rust boasts four songs from the album that gave it its name. It's also sequenced in the same spirit as its studio sibling. As with Rust Never Sleeps, Live Rust opens with steady-flowing acoustic numbers before swirling into an electric vortex. What was side 4 off the original two-record version--"Like a Hurricane," "Hey, Hey, My, My," and "Tonight's the Night"--is arguably Young and Crazy Horse at their peak as a live unit, with all due respect to 1991's estimable Weld and 1997's desultory Year of the Horse. Few rock bands rank with Young and his stalwart electric trio, and Live Rust presents them in all their raging glory. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
Consider the DVD.......2007-02-26
I haven't heard the CD: I give it 3 stars because Amazon requires some sort of rating, the DVD gets 5 stars, and the truncated Cortez would be sufficient to take away two stars for me.

Awesome.......2006-07-20
But the music is awesome. It's pure angry beauty, Hurricane sounds better here than anywhere else, ever, except MAYBE Weld. (Weld's great too!) I Am A Child...Sugar Mountain...Needle and the Damage Done (his perf at the Grammies a while back of this was great)...all amazing songs.
Young is the genius.

If Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Ragged Glory are the two finest studio albums Neil Young recorded with Crazy Horse, Zuma certainly qualifies as a close third. Recorded in 1975, Zuma exudes both a sense of focus and a tentative optimism, two qualities that were completely MIA from the bleak Time Fades Away/Tonight's the Night/On the Beach trilogy that preceded it. "Barstool Blues," "Don't Cry No Tears," and "Drive Back" are terse, punchy rockers, while "Danger Bird" and "Cortez the Killer" are extended guitar workouts in the grand Crazy Horse tradition. And the two acoustic entries--"Pardon My Heart" and "Through My Sails" (the latter was recorded with Crosby, Stills & Nash)--are absolutely gorgeous. Ignore the crappy cover art, and treat yourself to one of Young's most underrated records. --Dan EpsteinCustomer Reviews:

Don't cry no tears around Neil, this is his BEST!.......2007-01-30
Highlights are...
Danger Bird- epic guitar song, dark!
Barstool Blues- great song that no one has heard
Stupid Girl-About Joni Mitchell?
Drive Back- Punk attitude song
Cortez The Killer- The Best Neil song, period.
Through My Sails- druggy CSNY outake from the disaster 1974 Hawaii sessions, great.
Like Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere's little brother.......2006-10-21
First, the good. Cortez the Killer is my favorite here, the song friggin' rocks, a lengthy guitar jam a la Down By the River, Cowgirl in the Sand and the then-upcoming Like a Hurricane. I've heard some people don't like Neil's guitar playing, I say listen to this one and you'll get blown away. If the three-and-a-half minute intro doesn't grab you, you're not a Neil Young fan. What else is good? My second favorite song is Barstool Blues, another great rock song. Plus I like Don't Cry No Tears and the other long guitar showpiece, Danger Bird.
But the rest isn't quite up to the Neil Young Standard. He often settles for generic love songs (a la Pardon My Heart and Lookin' for a Love). Either that, or he suddenly becomes immature (Stupid Girl, which is, well... stupid). Through My Sails has some nice harmonies, being CSN related, but it's not much outside of that, and Drive Back is a generic rocker saved only by Neil's guitar fireworks.
It's a respectable album, far better than the vastly overrated Harvest and spotty debut. But compared to On the Beach, After the Gold Rush, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere or Tonight's the Night, it falls apart. I suppose you should buy it, just don't expect anything near a masterpiece.
