CHRISTY MOORE'S "LIVE AT THE POINT" IS ONE OF THE BEST, IF NOT THE BEST, IRISH MUSIC CD THAT I HAVE EVER PURCHASED. THE CD IS FULL OF EXCELLENT SONGS, SOME QUITE POINGNANT AND OTHERS EXTREMELY FUNNY. THE ONE CONSTANT IS THE HIGH QUALITY OF THE MUSIC AND THE GREAT ENTERTAINER THAT IS CHRISTY MOORE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD FOR IRISH MUSIC FANS.

The Definitive Ruby Andrews Collection...Must Have Chicago Soul Classic........2006-06-30

Most people are sleep on who Ruby Andrews is. For those that don't know, or think they know (because they only heard Cassanova) wake up! This woman is the essence of what Chicago soul singers are really about! Most folk only associate two female singers from Chicago (the late Minnie Riperton and Mavis Staples) and disregard the rest. Ruby Andrews has all the funk Mavis Staples only achieved on one album (the Curtis Mayfield produced A Piece of the Action Soundtrack, which FYI was excellent), and the seriousness of Minnie Riperton classic Come Into My Garden in this collection all in one. For those just finding out about this gem, I would recommend finding a vinyl copy of the 1972 recording of Black Ruby since it hasnt been re-released on CD. However, if you can't, before you play the whole CD in sequential order, listen to the following FIRST:

There are songs on here for everyone. Some are dated, but the funkier cuts are in the aforementioned. Ruby's talent, as well as innovation come out very nicely in this collection; the style of guitar, bass and strings used in some of the songs is very reminiscent of later 70s works of Curtis Mayfield with female singers (mostly Aretha Franklin (Sparkle Soundtrack), Mavis Staples (Piece of the Action Soundtrack), and Gladys Knight (Claudine Soundtrack)) but note: Ruby Andrews did it first!!!
If I had one baby gripe about this compilation, it would be not including Overdose Of Love, which is such a sexy, seductive song IMO that has mystique in it that captures you from the first note to the end. But all in all, you won't be dissapointed.

Should have been a hit........1999-10-27

The critics hated this, but they also hated "At 17" and "Between the Lines". both #1 records for Ian. She has always used the best musicians available; Steve Gadd & Willie Weeks fill in admirably the spaces left by Richard Davis et al in her earlier work. I know this came on the heels of "Breaking Silence", so everyone expected a moody noir piece - but its refreshing to hear Ian's most commercial material, with choruses you can sing along to, lyrics with insight, the works! Of all her albums, this has to be my favorite, because I can play it tooling around in my car, right next to Back Street Boys and Puff Daddy. If she were male, if she were 19 or 20 years old, this album would have been platinum.

The Critics hated it but I LOVED it.......1999-05-09

This album was panned by the critics but if you are a fan of the "At Seventeen" era Janis Ian, this album is great. Most of the tunes on this album are catchy and remind me of why I liked Janis Ian to begin with. My favorites cuts are "When Angels Cry," "Tenderness" and "Take Me Walking In The Rain." The songs are a little sappy (and yes a little depressing) but isn't that why so many of us liked her in the first place?

God's Gift To Women's "Stop To Think It Over" is simply one of the most gorgeous and soulful ballads ever--said song easily justifies buying this great anthology of rare New Orleans Soul ballads. But don't overlook or underestimate the rare gems from such obscure artists and groups as Betty Harris, Earl King, The Herculoids, The Philharmonics and Diamond Joe as all are superb slices of gospel-infused Sweet Soul with a Southern twist. Rarities from the Malaco vaults........2007-01-06

This compilation focuses almost exclusively on rarities and previously unreleased tracks from the Malaco label's vaults. Malaco, of course, is probably one of the very few labels still recording and releasing REAL Soul music and this collection gives you a good overview of the label's sound an d style. The songs by Sam Dees, Dorothy Moore, The Patterson Twins, Tommy Tate, Anita Mitchell, Charles Warren and Carolyn Faye are my favorites but the whole CD is very good. Both ballads and more uptempo tracks are featured here.
