The Judds - The Greatest Hits

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Between 1984 and 1988, Naomi and Wynonna Judd could do no wrong. Nearly every single they released hit No. 1 on the country charts, and they soon became the biggest selling duo in country history. This set collects all of those early No. 1s, the only exception being "Give a Little Love," which peaked at No. 3. Powered by a neo-traditionalist sound, Wynonna's sultry, bluesy phrasing and mother Naomi's impeccable harmonies, their recordings tell the story of real lives and real loves, and touched a deep chord with country music's growing female audience. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars One of the better greatest hits albums.......2005-07-01

The Judds One of the best female duos ever. I'm not huge
fan of country music, but the Judds are one of VERY few
country acts that I listen to now. They like the other
few country acts I follow are more of a guilty pleasure.

However, that doesn't mean they don't deserve credit. Each
one is really good singers, It's ashame the cancer came up
or they could have went further.

Anyway, this is a great album and most of the hits Why Not
Me, Rockin With The Rythm of The Rain, Mama He's Crazy and
my favorite "Grandpa (Tell Me about the good ole days) the
best tune the dead IMO..

One song I feel was left out such as Turn It Loose. Other
than that, it's worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Country.......2005-01-30

As anyone who knows me will know the first ever music I heard was by Kenny Rogers, then came The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard and next was The Judds.

I probably listen to them less than the rest of the artists I mentioned, but that's probably due to not enough free time and the fact I have never bought their albums on CD (the Vinyl and Tape editions are still in my house).

Anyway I can't really say why i haven't given much thought as to buying a CD of theirs until now, but it's something I'm going to have to do, with songs as good as this, I want to be able to listen to them a bit more.

The opening track on this compilation of their music is "Why not me?", i've always been undecided on this song, not because I don't like it, but at times I love it and at times I skip it to get on to the next cut (not as easy on tape and vinyl as it is on CD).

"Mama he's crazy" is one of my favourite cuts on the album, it's about a young girl talking to her mother about the love of her life and the play on words in this song are typical of many country songs ("He's heaven sent And must be out of my mind, Mama he's crazy, Crazy over me"). This was the song that really made them famous too, becoming their first #1 hit in August of 1984.

Another favourite of mine on this collection of "Grandpa Tell me 'bout the good ol' days", again this is a sentimental song, typical of the Country genre ("Did lovers really fall in love to stay? And stand beside each other come what may?
Was a promise really something people kept, Not just something they would say and then forget? Did families really bow their heads to pray? Did daddies really never go away?
Oh, Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days"). Yes, the lyrics may seem somewhat corny, but here, in the context of the song, it really works well.

The rest of the tracks on this album such as "Girls night out" (a party anthem) "Cry Myself to sleep" and "A Change Of Heart", are great inclusions and when this album was released it must have seemed pretty definitive, but of course, The Judds continued to make music for several more years and in that time there was certainly enough material for RCA to produce a second volume of Judd's hit's.

5 out of 5 stars The songs that made them famous.......2004-09-27

The Judds, with their great acoustic songs, were the heroines of traditional country fans in the eighties. This compilation contains the songs that made them famous. Generally, these are the hits I like best, although they had further hits (see volume 2) and they are also of a high quality.

Nine of these ten tracks are taken from their debut mini-LP and their first two full-length albums (Why not me, Rockin' with the rhythm), which I still think are their best original albums. Give a little love, the only song here not to make number one on the country charts although it came close, was never released on an original album in America - it was in the UK, as I explain in my review of their Heartland album. Note that the hits from Heartland appear on the second volume of hits.

Among the songs, my favorites are Why not me, Girls night out and Grandpa (tell me 'bout the good old days), but every song here is a classic.

If you buy this and the second volume of hits, you'll have all the essential Judds recordings with the possible exception of Don't be cruel.

This was a gift to a Judds fan and she loves it, she also wants more.

5 out of 5 stars The Judds - Greatest Hits, Vol 2.......2007-01-13

The songs are great. Doesn't put you to sleep

5 out of 5 stars Heart and Soul.......2005-01-16

The Judds are simply put, awesome country singers. Lyrically, The Judds combine faith and love and intertwine both to create beautiful rhythm. Musically, they always got that country twang, good for the soul. You can't help but feel the vibe on "Turn It Loose". My favourites include "Young Love" and "John Deere Tractor", both of which take you through the motions and tell a story. The Judds will remain good quality and classic country music, to the root and vein of every heart.

5 out of 5 stars More Judds classics.......2004-09-27

This collection picks up where the first volume ends although it includes a couple of tracks from their early albums that didn't make it on to that volume, these being John Deere tractor and Have a dream (a cover of a song that Elvis Presley had recorded as For the heart). The remaining tracks are taken from the albums Heartland, River of time and Love can build a bridge, except for Guardian angels, which didn't appear on any original album. One disappointing omission is another Elvis cover, Don't be cruel, but it only just made the country top ten so maybe it was not considered essential.

My favorite tracks here are Young love (an original song, not a cover of the fifties classic) and Love can build a bridge. The latter song is the one they are best known for in Britain, not because of their own lovely recording, but because of a charity pop cover version that was a UK number one pop hit. It's good, but the original is best and makes regular appearances on UK country various artist compilations.

If you enjoy their first hits collection or the albums from which those hits are taken you will surely enjoy this too although I feel the first volume is the stronger of the two overall.

4 out of 5 stars Authentic and charming country music.......2003-12-27

With a very simple acoustic-based sound, The Judds created very authentic, sometimes even bluesy, country music. Their vocals are exquisite, especially the harmony singing. Add to that the quality of the material, and the Judds were unquestionably one of the greatest female duos of the 1980s.

Sure, these are mostly simple love songs, but therein lies their charm as they do succeed in covering the subject in all its complexity. In addition, there are hooks in all the right places, ensuring catchy, memorable music. My favourites include the life-affirming Girls Night Out, about a woman's determination to have a great night out with all the right music and dancing, and the sad, confessional song Change Of Heart.

I also love Have Mercy with its lively piano, the brooding ballad Cry Myself To Sleep and the gentle but inspiring Love Is Alive where the harmony vocals really shine. If you like good story songs and vignettes from real life, you'll love the refreshing music of The Judds.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Their Hits.......2003-06-08

How can anyone deny that every song on this Greatest Hits package is top-notch material?? It has all the excellent Judd songs on it. However, I couldn't in good conscience go without saying that if you like this disc, you really should pick up their individual CDs... The only release they did that wasn't 5-star was their last studio release "Love Can Build A Bridge". The Judds are so much more than just their Greatest Hits, if you don't pick up their other CDs, you'll be missing out on a lot of great music!!

    5 out of 5 stars the best!.......2003-01-01

This cd is one of the best Judds cd, it has all of their old stuff on it. I been a fan since they started. It has Why Not Me, Rockin' With the Rythum, and other great songs. If your a true judd fan this one's for you!

I love this CD of the Judds! Definately worth the money, their songs are the best. Brings back ALOT of great memories for me. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody can beat the Judds!.......2000-08-14

Long before the Dixie Chicks, or Shedaisy... a Niamoi, and Whinonna, (a mother and daughter duo) were, and in my opion still are the best female country group. All of my favorite songs as a child are on this cd... from "Rockin' with the Rythm of the Rain", "Girl's night out", "Love is Alive" and all of the others. This is the best Judds cd ever released, and quite perhaps one of the best country groups there ever was. I love you Judds!!!

This cd was a little disappointing to me. I am a HUGE Judds fan, and after buying the first Greatest Hits cd, knowing every word, and loving it I had to buy the second. I was suprised to find that the quality in this cd didn't quite reach that of the first which blew me away. However two of my favorite songs... "Young Love", and "Love Can Build a Bridge" are on this cd, which I listen to over and over again. Don't get me wrong, great, great, GREAT cd, but if you're going to buy either one or two I'd buy the first one.
