How Did It Happen..........2005-03-17

...that the more theatrical, prententious brand of folk canary (ie-Judy Collins) became megastars while a musician like Stuart has remained a cult favorite at best for so long ? Ooops. Just answered my own question. There's a huge range of work on this CD. Old novelty tunes ("Seven Beers..."), blues ("Follow Me, Honey...") and traditional folk ("Seven Daffodils") that would be a mishmash in the hands of a lesser artist. All are unified beautifully by Stuart's no-nonsense delivery on voice and guitar (also banjo, on one track). She even penned a sarcastic little ode to the 1960s coffee house scene in "Beatnik." These tracks both epitomize and transcend that particular era, much like Terry Callier does on his older releases like *First Light*. For a fun and inspiring exercise, compare her version of "Follow Me, Honey" here with the older, even more masterful Alice Stuart on the *Can't Find No Heaven* CD.

Oldie but Goodie.......2004-06-04

Oh, Man - I like Alice Stuart. I like her phrasing, and the way she plays guitar. When I heard "All the Good Times," I was very pleasantly surprised! One can hear the differences in Alice's technique, and the changes in her voice that the years have wrought, but wow - this album holds up really well considering it's age. The recording values are first rate, the quality of Alice's musicianship and her vocals are too.

I give this one a 4 out of 5 - but only because I had to leave a 5 for "Can't Find No Heaven." Get this one! ESPECIALLY if you're a Stuart fan.

ABOUT GOR MKHITARIAN- YERAZ

Gor Mkhitarian's long-awaited debut solo album is finally here. Released on the upstart world/classical music label Pomegranate Music, Mkhitarian's album entitled, "Yeraz", has been hailed as one of the most anticipated independent world music releases of the year by several industry insiders. Produced by Raffi Meneshian and recorded in Armenia by Mika Margarian, "Yeraz" is a contemporary Armenian folk masterpiece consisting of 11 songs featuring two acoustic guitars, percussion, and a banjo. Mkhitarian penned 9 songs on the album while arranging 2 traditional Armenian folks songs including, "Gakavik", by Komitas.

With "Yeraz", Mkhitarian makes a case of writing the next chapter in Armenia's rich musical history by updating the sound and feel of the classic Armenian folk song. This is a subtle, powerful, and enjoyable album that achieves greatness through the intellegence of the musicians. When I was first introduced to this album, I was immediately stuck by the thoughtful translated lyrics and the banjo. The acoustic flavor gives this album a folksy feel. I would say that "Yeraz" is a breakout album.

Something old and something new.......2002-08-14

I discovered this CD from my friend Aaron Stayon who was in Armenia for two year with the Peace Core. While there he met singer/song writer Gor Mkhitarian and together they produced this album. The CD CD blends traditional Armenia music with rock and folk and has a modern feel. The musical style is influenced by Simon & Garfunkel, The Dave Matthews Band, and Bob Dylan. I highly recommended it.

For the Banjo Instrumental CD collector.......2005-12-17

While I have to agree with the earlier assessment that this CD contains the good, the bad and the ugly, I do think that the other reviewer was speaking of the earlier version of it when he lamented the poor production quality. I heard clips from that one and he was right. Fortunately that problem has been somewhat corrected with the expanded edition. They have digitally improved the sound quality on most of the songs so that the banjo isn't lost like it was before.
As for the music, Doug Dillard is certainly one of the early banjo heroes and this is a good cross section of his style if you are a banjo instrumental cd collector like I am. The expanded version has some worthwhile bonus tracks. The problem I have with this CD is that while there are some good, energetic versions of songs like Runaway Country, Turkey Knob, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and Dear Old Dixie (a bonus track) there is also some disheartening instrumental experimentation on Hard Times (one of my all time favorite banjo songs) and Dixie Breakdown. I'm not sure if it's a Jew's Harp or what that's on Dixie Breakdown, but it's annoying, not to mention the heavy percussion and distorted Telecaster. The drums on Hard Times ruin what otherwise might have been a very interesting arrangement of it for me.
Overall, I recommend it as a piece of banjo history, especially if you're curious to hear Doug's unique blend of various 3-finger styles. No less a banjo master than Alan Munde has listed Doug as a primary influence. Just be aware that if you're a bluegrass purist, there will be a few tunes that will rattle you.

The Sound Engineer Should Be Shot.......2004-07-02

This CD contains some awesome hard driving bluegrass banjo. The only problem is that you can't hear it. The CD sounds like it was recorded on a cassette recorder at the opposite end of a high school gymnasium. The sound engineer gave priority to the train whistle on the first track and bottom priority to Douglas. This is very frustrating because Douglas Dillard was an awesome picker in his prime. The cut "Clintch Mountain Backstep" is good but then there's a track or two containing a harpsichord which sounds like the Partridge Family with a banjo (It's enough to make anybody break out into a cold sweat). Bottom line: this CD contains the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Great Instrumental Album!.......2002-04-13

This album contains jams recorded live in the studio between Doug Dillard, Gene Clark,Andy Bellings,Don Beck and others. It's pretty amazing, and how such an album has been forgotten is a shame. The songs include "Train 4500", "Bells of St. Mary", "Jamboree" and "With Care From Someone" (yes, the Dillard & Clark tune)."The Banjo Album" was produced by Gary Usher and released by the Together label in 1969. The production is perfect for the album and creates a nice atmosphere. Get this when it (finally) will become available.
