Would American Idol winner Carrie Underwood have landed a major-label recording contract without winning the hugely popular television contest? Probably. The big-voiced Oklahoman has the pipes, the look, the pedigree, and, most important, the emotional resonance to sustain a professional career. As an investment in her future, her label eschewed the easy path in putting out an album to take advantage of her publicity, going for a name producer, Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Lonestar), to handle half the tracks. It also solicited material from the same top songwriters (Diane Warren, Brett James, Troy Verges, Rivers Rutherford) who stock albums by Hill, Martina McBride, Trisha Yearwood, and Wynonna. "Jesus, Take the Wheel," the hit first single, shows off the best of Underwood's power vocals, while the sexy rocker "We're Young and Beautiful" pulls her out of her ballad-heavy comfort zone, and her autobiographical "I Ain't in Checotah Anymore" bolsters her authenticity. If the young performer oversings on occasion (the overwrought bonus track, "Inside Your Heaven"), and settles for too many generic themes, she still surprises in her ability to go head-to-head with country's reigning females. Will Underwood really survive to be a contender for the Martina throne? Let's just say that American Idol judges and voters picked the right contestant. If the posturing Bo Bice had won, rock stars would hardly be quaking in their boots. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-07-16

It's a great CD. Carrie Underwood has an incredible voice. I listen to this CD everyday. It's amazing!!!! I strongly recommend that you buy this CD!!!...it's great!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing debut!.......2007-07-11

I'm one of those people who followed Carrie on American Idol and just had to get her debut album, whether it was good or not. Although I've found that most debuts from AI stars tend to be nothing special, Some Hearts sets itself apart from the rest of the crowd.

Here's a rundown of the songs and my rating:

Wasted-4.5/5
Don't Forget to Remember Me-3.5/5
Some Hearts-4/5
Jesus, Take the Wheel-4/5
The Night Before (Life Goes On)-4/5
Lessons Learned-4.75/5
Before He Cheats-4.5/5
Starts With Goodbye-4.5/5
I Just Can't Live A Lie-4/5
We're Young And Beautiful-3.25/5
That's Where It Is-3.75/5
Whenever You Remember-3.25/5
I Ain't in Checotah Anymore-3/5
Inside Your Heaven-3.75/5

Although my ratings above don't average to be 5 stars, the entire album is worth 5 stars, if not more. There's something truly amazing about Carrie's voice. She has the ability to soothe and yet can drill an important message loud and powerfully. Carrie is known to be a country music artist but a lot of the songs on Some Hearts aren't extremely country-sounding. I'm not a fan of country music so I was pleasantly surprised that both fans of country music and fans of good music in general can find this album entertaining.

Those who only know Carrie from her singles will be content with songs like "Jesus, Take the Wheel", "Some Hearts", "Don't Forget to Remember Me", "Before He Cheats", and her American Idol single "Inside Your Heaven". Thankfully, the rest of the songs on this album are just as good (if not better) than the singles.

Although most of the songs are considered "slow" (mainly due to the violins and piano), there's plenty of guitars and drums to kick up each and every song. Lyric-wise, I can't think of any good albums other than Some Hearts that have real, relatable messages. From "Wasted"'s message about learning to get over alcohol problems, to "Before He Cheats"'s message about getting back at a cheating boyfriend, to "Lessons Learned"'s message about being positive even with the changes life throws you, it's obvious that there was a lot of heart put into this album.

The highlights of this album are "Wasted", "Lessons Learned", "Before He Cheats", "Starts With Goodbye", and "I Just Can't Live A Lie". Listen to this album while driving with your windows down with a couple of close friends. Or listen to it when you need a pick me up. It's truly a breath of fresh air.

3 out of 5 stars Definately Recommended.......2007-07-09

I bought this album for my sister and pretty much only for the song Jesus Take The Wheel, which I love! I didnt think I would like the rest of it as I am not much of a country music fan, BUT I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoy this album, so I would definately recommend this to all country music fans and anyone else who just feels like something different! I even got my neice bopping away to it and that is saying something!

4 out of 5 stars Carrie Underwood cd.......2007-07-05

young lady with a strong voice, great for listening if traveling. Not great if you wish a softer relaxing easy listening type of cd. It rocks if you like country, but do not like the whinning that most country singers seem to have. Carrie does not. Her voice is clear and right on key. Fast paced cd with good music. It crosses both boundaries of rock and country in a good way.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-07-03

I was very disappointed with this and so was my wife! We expected much much more. We have buried this and probably won't ever play it again. A waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars close ...but broken winged.......2006-11-14

The last the third period of Everly Bros. First, Cadence early classic Second, Warner Bros hits, Third, Mercury 80's comeback

SOME HEARTS suffers from some lesser songs Phil and Don still ring true voices but the material does not add up to the previous last 2 albums. It is sorry to be said that this is the last album/CD of new material, maybe forever.

Everly Bros. completists will want this CD (no LP issued)

3 out of 5 stars Some hearts are worth waiting for........2006-01-18

This was the third, and last, studio album the Everly Brothers recorded for Mercury Records. It is also the weakest of the three albums. The main problem here is that the songs aren't quite as good this time around. The fault there lies with the Everlys themselves, since they wrote seven of the ten songs here. I suppose it's admirable that they wanted to write the majority of the material themselves, but the other Mercury albums (where they only wrote one to three songs) are better.

4 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars: Everlys Finale For Mercury.......2005-12-29

The Everlys third and final studio album recorded for Mercury during their fine Eighties reunion period (1983-1988). No "Wings of a Nightingale" here, nor is it quite up to 'Born Yesterday,' their previous Mercury album. But you really can't go wrong when those two voices get wrapped around melodies from great songwriters like Brian Wilson and John Hiatt. I only wish their overall choice of songs was up to that standard, but the Brothers have always been a little hit-and-miss in that area. For instance, it would have been great to hear them cover a tune by Marshall Crenshaw, or even Chris Isaak, two contemporary artists whose writing style seems perfectly suited for the Everlys' sound. Don and Phil assumed the production reins for 'Some Hearts' (Welsh Roots Rocker Dave Edmunds produced their previous two Mercury releases), and the Beach Boys make a guest appearance, uniting two of the greatest harmony-based groups of all time.

    Product Description

In 1983, there was a great deal of buzz surrounding the Everly Brothers, who had not appeared together since their rather public breakup a decade earlier. A rapturously received reunion concert at Londons Royal Albert Hall set them on a path that would intersect with Mercury Records for three albums. On those three studio albums, the seminal twosome managed to update their trademark sound, while maintaining the qualities that had originally made them one of early rock 'n roll's most popular and influential acts. On The Wings Of A Nightingale: The Complete Mercury Studio Recordings (1984 1988) captures all of the magic of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famers during their reunion honeymoon. Starting with EB 84, produced by longtime fan Dave Edmundswho had, in Rockpile, covered several Everly tunesthe Mercury era records brought Don and Phil's sound up to date while keeping the focus on their still-stirring voices. Paul McCartneywho had long acknowledged the Everlys formative influence on the Beatles sound contributed the buoyant On The Wings Of A Nightingale, kicks off EB 84 on an inspired note, and it became the Everly Brothers first Billboard chart single since 1967. On 1986s Born Yesterday, again produced by Edmunds, the Everlys offer distinctive readings of such well-chosen cover tunes as Arms Of Mary, originally by Englands Sutherland Brothers, Bob Dylans Abandoned Love, Mark Knopflers Why Worry, and Sam Cookes standard You Send Me. Don and Phil assumed the production reins for their third and final Mercury album, 1988s Some Hearts... Two classic sets of rock n roll harmonists meet on a version of the Beach Boys Don't Worry Baby, with the Beach Boys themselves guesting. The album sessions also produced an unreleased performance of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Jim Steinman composition A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste. It finally sees the light of day on this collection.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Convenient.......2006-06-29

It's nice to have the 3 albums the Everly's made in the 1980s on a 2 disk set.

But the xtras (bonus tracks) are very few.

The compilers of this set put 2 albums on the first disk, and the 3rd album and one bonus track on the second disk, so it is considererably shorter. And since many think that the 3rd album was not all that great, it makes the second disk on this Hip-O collection rather weak.

A convenient package, but primarily for completists

5 out of 5 stars essential music - should be more easily obtainable.......2005-11-27

This is some of the best pop music that's even been produced. I look forward to seeing this stuff back in-print, and reasonably priced.*

    * I SHOULD note that Hip-O Select told me that this release comes in a special cardboard case. Oooooooo...

            5 out of 5 stars Love Isý.......2004-02-22

This album (1986) is the best album of Chris Norman. All the songs are very good.

            A "must-have" for his fans.

My favourite songs are "Hunters Of The Night", "Love Is..." and "Till The Night We'll Meet Again".

4 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST.......2000-11-11

Debating with previous reviewer I must say that Chris Norman has left Smokie not in the late 80's but in the EARLY 80's (namely in 1983) and after that he was NOT lost for pop music but continued to release his solo albums up to 1999 so far. He released a lot of solo albums after leaving Smokie but all of them are unavailable in the USA and some of them do not exist on CD. As for this album released back in 1986 it is NOT his best (here he collaborates with songwriter/producer Dieter Bohlen from German outfit Modern Talking). Some best songs from here were included (likewise from TWO other solo albums) on MIDNIGHT LADY compilation. Better buy Midnight Lady. It is cheaper and more definitive.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible voice singing the best songs I've ever heard.......1999-09-05

After leaving Smokie in late 80s, Chris was lost from the Pop music. His comeback is guranteed success with this album
