Editorial Reviews
Less than two years after her mentor Gram Parson's death, Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-'70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her cyrstalline, febrile vocals took standards such as "Sweet Dreams" and "If I Could Only Win Your Love" back up the charts. Profile focuses on these early hits, and if it's too brief to capture all the best songs from four-star albums such as Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, and Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town, it shows why Harris is important and why she continues to make adventurous country music. Through unfailingly tasteful song selection, brilliant occasional songwriting, and her cool, velvety soprano, Harris extended Gram Parsons's vision of "cosmic American music" and made it her own. --Roy Kasten

Wonderful!.......2005-09-10
Small sample of her early work.......2005-04-09
Other very beautiful songs include the gentle love ballad Sweet Dreams, the sad story song To Daddy, Making Believe, a yearning song of lost love, and the stirring Together Again. With her crystalline vocals, her expert phrasing and her tasteful choice of material, Emmylou has created a magnificent body of work.
Now for the omissions! When I Stop Dreaming from Luxury Liner is Emmylou at her best. Till I Gain Control Again and Satan's Jewel Crown from Elite Hotel are must haves. And the sublime My Songbird from Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town is one of the most spiritual songs she ever recorded.
In the light of this, I award this album only four stars, but Profile is still a great sample of her work from that time. I recommend that you get all of the aforementioned albums so as not to miss out on any of her gems.

The classic country rock years.......2004-01-24
During these years (1975 to 1978), Emmylou had many hits on the American country charts including three solo number one hits, all cover versions and all included here. They were Together again (Buck Owens), Sweet dreams (Patsy Cline) and Two more bottles of wine (Delbert McClinton). Emmylou had many other big country hits with cover versions, including If I could only win your love (Louvin brothers) and You never can tell C'Est la vie (Chuck Berry).
Dolly Parton wrote To Daddy and recorded it for her 1976 album All I can do, but Emmylou heard it and recorded it herself. When Dolly heard Emmylou's version, she substituted another song for her own album, although Dolly's version was eventually released on a compilation CD many years later. Thus, Emmylou's version, included here, is the first one the public heard.
This is a great introduction to Emmylou's early music.
Essential Emmylou.......2003-12-30
Harris also had impeccable taste in material, and this CD is also illustrative as a retrospective of the best of country that stretches all the way back to its origins with the Carter Family's "Hello Stranger." Other highlights are the strongly feminist "One of These Days," and sweet covers of Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams" and Kitty Wells' "Making Believe," but there really isn't a dud in the bunch. Highly recommended for all of us who need to remember what country music was like at its best.

Great Things In Store For This Guitarist!.......2005-07-16
You can hear the influence of B.B. King in his playing and the liner notes confirm that B.B. was and is an inspiration. Make no mistake, this is no mere copycat. Kirk has learned from the masters - including Elmore James (check out "Worried Man Blues") - but he is definitely his own man.
The album is titled "Shades of Blue" and these shades range from songs written by Jimmy Dawkins, Jr. Wells and Magic Sam, to Percy Mayfield. However, These are not the usual covers. Someone certainly gave these choices some thought. There are also a couple of originals showing additional talent as a songwriter. On "Blues for Boo Boo" (his daughter - and I'd love to hear the story behind that nickname) we get a hint that he may also have some jazz in his repertoire. That hint shows up again in "Hip Hug Her".
The vocals are shared by Kim Wilson, along with his oh-so-fine harp, Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby and they give Kirk plenty of room to show his stuff. I particularly enjoyed the vocals of Finis Tasby whose voice and style seem to mesh especially well with Kirk's. I would have liked to have heard a couple more intrumentals. Maybe next time. Meanwhile, I highly recommend this CD and I hope there is more to come soon. Am I raving? Yes I am!
One last note to Riley: Your blues are in good hands!

Nine, Nine Livez.......2006-03-02
"I waste MC's like time...the one & only incredible, original Nine".......2006-01-18
Nine's debut album is crammed full of dirty, dirty, dark beats that perfectly accentuate Nine's grimy voice (not quite Rock from Heltah Skeltah, but rougher than Smoothe the Hustler). Anyways, the production is STELLAR. More importantly, Nine is a truly dope MC. Unfortunately, most people remember him for his uniquely raspy voice and this has overshadowed his lyrical ability. It's a shame, 'cause his flow is totally on point w/ the beats and his lyrics are original and memorable.
Almost every track on this album (save 1 or 2) could be single, they're that good. I don't wanna separate any tracks from the rest (I love 'em all!) but the first single "Whutcha Want" is one of my favorite tracks ever. Also, I have to give mad props to Nine for the track "Hit 'em Like Dis," which features MC Froggy Frog, who is really Nine rhyming like a frog and trading rhymes with himself. Most people don't get this track when I play it for them, but those few who do appreciate how creative and funny it is...ahh 1995, when MC's could still have fun w/ Hip-Hop and not care what people thought.
Although this album seems kinda dark and grimy, trust me when I say that IT'S THE PERFECT STONER ALBUM. After the short intro, you'll be sold as soon as you hear "Ova Confident."
Bottom Line: This album is so good it's infectious. Nine is one Hip-Hop most unappreciated MC's and he'll always be one of my favorites. 5 Stars, peace.
Nine - Any Emcee who disagree?!.......2005-12-09
Lead single "Watchuwant" with its jeep-riding video, its follow up, the Rakim-sampling "Any Emcee" and "The Cypha" are clearly the best cuts on the album. Overall, the album is well produced and because Nine never "blew up" commercially, the deleted CD is hard to find and commands a high second hand price.

While they aren't the first to do so, Camp Lo's Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede make a direct appeal from hip-hop's current generation back to the blaxploitation era on Uptown Saturday Night, which recrafts the up-tempo, party atmosphere of the swinging 1970s, resplendent in the musical and cultural iconography of Harlem- and Bronx-style blaxploitation. Even for listeners who never watched Shaft, Superfly, or The Mack, Camp Lo's songs carry themselves with a cool air of slick styles. As critics have noted, Cheeba and Suede's lyrics are often nonrhyming barrages of key blaxploitation terminology that--read conventionally--actually make no sense, but their spitfire pacing makes up in style what their verses lack in content (which is actually a pretty good description of blaxploitation, if you think about it). Much credit needs to go to producer Ski (who was also the musical mastermind behind Jay Z's impressive debut, Reasonable Doubt), who shows a smart sampling ear with bubbly pop tracks that are infectious enough to rock the party while still appealing to hardcore hip-hop heads. --Oliver WangCustomer Reviews:
ONE OF BEST HIP HOP CDS EVER PUT TOGETHER.......2007-07-06
Original Style from Da Bronx !!!.......2007-06-25
Cheeba said:"Thanks to all the cats that laugh at my style and then copy !!!"
Camp Lo formed in 1995.
They are most notable for their flair towards blaxploitation in their style of dress and in their lyrics.
Camp Lo uses slang heavily, often to the point of near incomprehensibility. A typical example of their lyrics is:
"Casanova brown, levitating jiggy in da shiggy's / In la hotta car 54 chasin' diamond runners / Headin' ice-bound, where every chilla dime can get / Your Harlem buck strut freezin' world heist Hollywood."
This is one of the best rap records in all the history of the Hip-Hop !!!
P.S.: Please check up my rap listmania, just clicking on my nickname and clicking above my listmania. Here there are 40 Hip-Hop albums choosed by me just for winning people and not for fans of the mortal masochism rap !!!
I assure that in my rap albums' list you will find the best American Hip-Hop albums. There are dance beats and strong ones and lyrics just for the winninf person in the life !!!

A throwback...artistic, nostalgic hip hop.......2006-12-06
The album begins with "Krystal Karrington," an upbeat, funky start where Cheeba and Suede introduce themselves as lyricists with their silky, smooth stylings. One of the best hip hop singles of all time follows, "Luchini aka This Is It." From the singalong chorus to the perfect horn-laden beat to the joyfully happy lyrics, this song is perfect, and there's not much more I can say, it makes the album worth the purchase alone. "Park Joint" uses a really catchy funky sample, I remember Pete Rock using this sample in the past, it's an upbeat track and a party-starter. "B-Side to Hollywood" has jazzy muted horns and the duo steals the show on the mic, the hook is great too. "Killin' `Em Softly" has a slower beat but some of the album's hardest verses. I love "Sparkle," a jazzy and beautiful nighttime song with another nice chorus. "Black Connection" has a sad and dramatic sample, once again the two rappers shine over great production, really bringing out the best in the music. "Swing" is another well-produced, catchy cut, and "Rockin' It aka Spanish Harlem" has some Latin influence. "Say Word" and "Negro League" are two lyrical highlights. "Nicky Barnes aka It's Alright" is dripping with style, and "Black Nostaljack aka Come On" is one of my favorites on the disc. "Coolie High" is gorgeous, slow and sultry. The album closes with an interesting mix of "Sparkle," it has no noticeable drumbeat and sounds like spoken whispered poetry.
"Uptown Saturday Night" is an album unlike any other I've heard, it has tons of replay value and is just executed with near perfection. The two rappers are so unique, excelling on multiple levels, and the production is almost flawless. I don't know if it came at the wrong time or was just above the world's head, but this one is highly recommended, it's a slept-on and underrated gem.
This cd is hot!!!.......2006-09-21
Uptown of a beautiful Saturday Night (4.5 Stars).......2006-05-09
One track I didn't like that much was "Killing Them Softly", somewhat of a track that doesn't fit their style. Other than that I think this CD was one of the best jams that came out back in 1997. It gives you a feel for one of those Grown And Sexy Club settings. Cheeba and Suede come correct on the microphone in this CD. Highly Recommended if you want to hear some upscale party tracks with tight lyrics.
Standouts: Luchini, Black Connection, Rockin' It, Black Nostaljack, Coolie High
