Too much too soon is the m.o. of so many bands who, thanks to the fleeting fame that accompanies music-video breakthroughs, are famous before their time and has-beens five minutes later. You could be excused for thinking that's the case with Counting Crows, darlings of both MTV and VH1, who here release a double concert CD after only two studio albums. But you'd be wrong. The set, an acoustic disc recorded for VH1's Storytellers and an electric one from MTV's Live from the 10 Spot, proves how well the oft-bootlegged Crows have earned their reputation as a smoking live band. It also shows how elastic their rambling and evocative songs can be, some of which appear on both discs but in vastly different arrangements. People may tire of vocalist Adam Duritz's perpetually-wounded-soldier-of-love act, but this is one band whose success was hard-won and is richly deserved. --Daniel Durchholz
Customer Reviews:
If you want the orginal recorded music by that instead!.......2007-06-23
I wasn't a huge fan of the live music. Too many audience noise to drown out the otherwise amazing music. The audio never feels authentic to me. The VH1 disk is worth the money and then some. But beware. If you are a person that only wants to hear as band sing their songs exactly like they do on the album, this is NOT for you. I love the way they have changed the songs and lyrics to fit the mood that they're in at the time they're singing it. "I think we know how to play them now" probably explaines more than I could ever attempt. If you looked back at things you have done years ago, I am sure you would change them to reflect your position today. This album makes those changes and it's truly blissful to go along for the ride.
Great live music from the Counting Crows.......2006-11-08
Normally I am a total purist when it comes to concerts. I like the songs to sound the way they do on the CD, and I don't like surprises. But after seeing Counting Crows live this summer for the first time, I was amazed. It didn't matter that they changed the arrangements. They were just incredible. I immediately ordered Across A Wire, which didn't disappoint. This double CD captures their live performances for VH1 and MTV. It brought me right back to this summer's concert, and let me really appreciate Adam Duritz's vocals and the band's ability to change things up. Anyone who likes this band live will appreciate this CD set.
Best album of CC besides August and Everything After.......2006-08-24
Live music from Counting Crows! I somehow only just found this CD after being a CC fan since 1994. The energy of this performance is exhilarating. Adam Duritz is still raw, a trait I love and miss, since I think the rawness of his performing and writing has evaporated over the last five years or so.
I highly recommend this as a must have CD of Counting Crows. Two CDs, one is more acoustic than the other. My preference is for the second CD which is edgy and loud, long versions of songs I love. Sullivan Street, track 4 on CD#2 is awesome.
There are two versions of "Round Here" on this CD, one acoustic with only Adam and Dave. Both are fantastic.
I was at this show.......2006-08-05
I actually went to live at the 10 spot. I remember them announcing they were recording this live. It was a great show, though I had wished it was longer. Seems like the Counting Crows are lazy. I was a little disappointed they didn't play Mr. Jones. Overall great show though.

A must!!.......2006-03-03
I'll keep this review brief. This CD is nothing less than a Blues guitar statement. One like few others! An absolute must for Blues fans, period! Five stars are not enough for this CD!
can't get enough of it.......2005-02-12
Wow. I just came across this CD for real cheap, and boy was I glad I got it. I have listened to lots of blues players of different types, and the guitar of Albert King is amazing, especially on this disc. I have his In Session CD live with SRV, which was a really strong CD, but this particular CD presents a better sound of his guitar, in my opinion. It sounds sweeter, more well-rounded, powerful, diverse, and dead-on. I really love Albert King's work, and I always wish songs like "Blues Power" and "Blues at Sunrise" were much much longer because this type of slower blues has the sweetest licks. Get this CD. It radiates such warm, positive energy.
BEST BLUES I've heard in MONTHS !.......2004-10-17
I just unwrapped this CD this afternoon, popped into the player and ... it's EXCELLENT! What an inspiration Mr. King must have been to Clapton et al. Each track on this one SMOKES BIG TIME ! The guitar is perfect, raw, loud and captivating. This is what I've been looking for since I expired all of Michael Bloomfield's stuff. If you love Bloomfield, you'll love this and vice versa.
Awesome, but Wed & Thurs in SF even better!!!!.......2004-03-24
Albert is THE master!! This CD is truly powerful guitar playing and great vocals! A must for ALL Blues and rock fans.
As great as Live Wire / Blues Power is, it is very misleading to say that these were the best songs of the live SF shows. ALL songs were great, and the "leftovers" that were placed on the Wednesday night in San Francisco and Thursday night in San Francisco were just as good. All three CD's form the greatest collection of the sweetest guitar playing ever!!!! He was the TRUE master. It's amazing how few paople know about this secret pearl of music.
king of the flying v's and more...........2003-12-09
This is a seminal album....one of the finest live concert recordings ever, irrespective of genre. I saw King Albert twice at the Fillmore East in the old days [this one was recorded at Fillmore West], and this CD [or my old vinyl LP for that matter] captures him in all his live glory. Albert was a consummate professional who hadn't played large venues for the most part in his career when Bill Graham tapped him for the Fillmores, and he succeeded in pleasing [no, knocking out!!] audiences and turning them on to the blues....if you're counting your coins and wondering which next blues CD purchase will best serve your budget [or even if you're made of money and don't care either way but love the blues] - BUY THIS ONE!!!

HIGH WIRE LIVE.......2007-01-11
WILLIE PORTER AT HIS BEST, IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE. A SUPERB GUITAR PLAYER AND SINGER.
Sneakin' Up on Everybody.......2006-01-18
I had gone to the theater to hear Eric Johnson. But first, there was some guy on stage named Willy Porter. "Never heard of him," I thought. And then I heard him perform "Breathe."
Now I own Mr. Porter's complete catalog. And, in a couple of weeks, I'll be privileged to hear him again.
A year ago Willy snuck up on me. Now he's sneakin' up on everybody.
Superb.......2005-07-30
This is simply a superb CD. Willy has it all, great voice, great talent on the guitar, great sound and mastery of the technology to achive great sound. Great tune writing. Great feeling. I saw him play last fall on the joint tour he did with Martin Barre. The two of them joined forces to support each others solo album efforts- AND they were supported by Doanne Perry, Andy Giddings and Johnathan Nooyce of Jethro Tull. I saw the show in a cosy comfortable small venue here in Madison Wi. I was floored. The musicianship and chemistry that eminated from that stage was huge. This CD only has one cut that has any other players "You Stay Here" in which Martin Barre compliments Willy with own huge talent. I love this Cd so much I have played it for all my friends and every one of them loved it regardless of their musical tastes. It trancends it all. Just superb. Now all I wish for is for a live CD to be released of the 2004 Willy Porter / Martin Barre tour. That would be a great follow up to this most excellent CD. Just buy it.
Porter live, in top notch form! .......2005-03-18
Recorded in England and America between December 2001 and June 2003, every track on "High Wire Live" is an intimate selection between man, guitar, and audience. Willy Porter carries on a tradition that reminds one of the late Dave "Snaker" Ray in a contemporary rock format. His rhythm guitar uses accelerating minor chords and string-slapping punctuation while he sings the observant melodies. Influences of Indian ragas can be heard selectively in his rhythm work, carrying on E-string drones between chorus breaks. Guitarist Martin Barre of Jethro Tull fame guests in as the only other musician on the record, providing an interesting counterpoint response on both acoustic and electric guitars. Porter is finally gaining some much-deserved respect as a solo musician, carrying his audiences with his unique blend of classical, jazz and rock influences. A Brand New Fan Who Is Blown Away By Willy!.......2005-01-22
Well, I just saw Willy Porter open for Eric Johnson last night in Anaheim. I saw a guy get up onstage with an acoustic guitar, and since I didn't want to lose my spot near the stage, I figured I'd stay and watch. I don't usually watch the opening act. All I can say is THANK GOD I STAYED!! Willy Porter blew us all away with some of the most Phenominal Musicianship anyone there had ever seen. It's like the guy is Genetically Programmed to do what he does. Music just comes pouring out of the guy. And, he just may be the greatest acoustic guitar player you have ever seen. On top of that, he's very funny and a nice guy, too. I have no idea how I would catagorize his music, except to say that it is of Extremely High Caliber, and Extremely Inventive. I've run out of words, and I only just heard of Willy Porter yesterday. I haven't bought the CDs yet, but I'm going to when I finish writing this. I suggest you do the same, because Willy Porter is Phenominal.

Essential Third Day.......2005-09-22
A lot of things can go wrong with a live DVD. Get an uncomfortable venue or undesirable performance date, and you're pretty much stuck with a subpar recording. Luckily, all of this has been avoided on Third Day's most recent live DVD.
I catch Third Day every time they make it to the Pacific Northwest, and they never disappoint. This tour was no exception. Most of the songs are taken from their Wire cd, although they bring a few classics out as well. How many times has "My Hope Is You" been presented to the public as a live recording? Not enough--it's always a welcome addition, in my book. I have especially enjoyed the more funky, up-tempo version of "Black Bird", which was previously doomed to obscurity on their self-titled debut cd. This time it's got a lot more energy, and serves as a way to introduce everybody to the band.
If you're a Third Day fan, you'll enjoy this one. Mac's vocals are on the money. The band is effortlessly tight. These guys are such pros by now, they make it look easy.
A Great Way to See Them Again.......2005-03-15
I got to see Third Day twice last year (2004), once in Phoenix, Arizona and then later that fall in Columbus, Ohio. Both of those shows were in big arenas, so I enjoyed the smaller scale and intimacy of the Louisville show featured in the DVD of this package.
The sound and picture are both great. A must-have for any Third Day fan. It's a little pricey, but I'll probably buy some copies for friends as gifts (or just a way of introducing them to Third Day).
A good way to see what they're like live.......2005-02-14
Overall I give this package 5 stars as the music is great and it's always good to see them live but there are a couple things that keep from giving it 5 enthusiastic stars. First of all, the price. $25 is an awful lot these days. If you compare the price to other live dvd and cd packages I think you'll find this one about $5 more and in some cases as much as $10 more. The second small complaint I have is that there's only 9 live tunes (and 1 studio track) on the music disc. It's just an opinon but if it's going to be a true live album shouldn't it be the full limit of what the disc can hold? I've seen third day a couple times in concert and can attest to the fact that they play at least 76 minutes (the max amount of space for a music cd) I would of liked to have more music.
A part from those complaints I think any Third Day fan will be happy with the overall package. The music is great and the dvd is great and worth the money, even if it is a little more than I'd like.
The CD is alright, but get it for the DVD,.......2004-12-10
Since the spring of this year, Third Day have supported their latest studio release "Wire," with the "Live Wire Tour." The July 22 show in Louisville, Kentucky was taped for this CD/DVD package titled "Live Wire." I will say I do wish there could have been some more songs included, especially on the CD, which contains 9 live tracks, plus one new studio cut, "Thank You All," a tribute to the fans. Seven of the 9 live tracks are songs from Wire, plus "Sing A Song" (from Offerings II) and "Blackbird", from the band's first album. What you do get here sounds very good, it's a great recording of a very good live show. But the real reason to get "Live Wire" is the DVD, the band's third live DVD. In addition to all of the songs from the CD, the DVD contains 4 more songs--"Consuming Fire," "My Hope is You," "Show Me Your Glory" and "You Are Mine." The DVD also contains a rockumentary, a video for "Thank You All," photos, a promo trailer and a World Vision video package ("Offering"). The "Live Wire" set is a great concert package from Third Day, but I will say you'll want to get it more for the DVD than the CD.
Great Package.......2004-12-06
I just bought this GREAT CD/DVD package. A Friend of mine went to the concert which was in Louisville, Kentucky. I wish I was able to of gone, he did bring me back an Autographed Drum head by David Carr. Well, anyways this is a really good buy for any Hardcore Third Day fan.

MAKIN' ROOM FOR MARTHA! .......2006-02-20
One of the real problems with Motown records, was the fact that they were stupid (to put it simply). I mean the record company made money off of its recording artists. So to neglect the artists and risk their departure from the label really is just stupid. But in regards to the compilation, the label did not do half bad. I was so happy when I saw this 2 disc set, because it meant I could finally hear more than just "(Love Is Like A) Heatwave", "Dancing In The Street" and "Jimmy Mack". Though those songs are spectacular, even to this day, those are really the only songs by this phenomenal group that are ever promoted or used. Many people will never know the gems such as "Quicksand", "Darling, I Hum Our Song", "Third Finger, Left Hand", and "Bless You". This box set really is worth the money. And besides the great music, there is a little booklet that explains in detail about the group's successes and downfalls. To sum all of this up, even though you would have to purchase this used, it is worth the long delivery wait.
SUPERIOR VANDELLA SOUND.......2004-05-25
The hits, the misses and the unrelesed jewels are all great on this set, however what really makes this release spectactacular is the the sound. This boxed set was mastered with love, baby and the sound is simply amazing. It supasses all the other boxed sets from this series. a must have!
ALL the M&V you need...FOR DAYS!.......2003-09-27
I can't possibly leave this one sitting here in Amazon-com a single day longer devoid of even the least praise. That's almost as much a shame as the fact that Motown hasn't kept this superb set in print. I see also that the track listings aren't posted as I write this, so let me address that first.
The set contains 43 selections on two discs, gloriously restored in pristine mono, and every major 'A' side of the groups' you can think of, I assure you, is here: Heat Wave, Dancing In The Street, Quicksand, Nowhere To Run, Jimmy Mack, Honey Chile, I'm Ready For Love - if you've read this far, you know this list. Even latter day sides that were, frankly, relative commercial stiffs are here: I Should Be Proud, Sweet Darling', Taking My Love And Leaving Me. What's new here is the instances where very rare 'B' sides that never (or almost never) made it to LP or CD are included. Remember 'Darling I Hum Our Song,' 'Never Leave Your Baby's Side,' 'A Tear For The Girl' and the unforgettable 'Third Finger, Left Hand'? They're here. The only items I found missing - and it's hardly a major complaint - were a couple of 'B's' like 'Old Love Let's Try It Again' and 'Dancing Slow.' But, without question, this is (was) the most satisfying collection of Martha & the Vandellas Motown EVER offered their fans. I bought it on August 1, 1994 and, for now, you have to settle for it used if you want it. I sure WOULD.
By a few weeks Steve Wonder beat Martha & the Vandellas to the Pop Top 10 first in the summer of 1963, the year I was nine. But between his "Fingertips" and their "Heat Wave" the beginning of my lifelong love of Motown was born. And I think I'm as 'brand loyal' a consumer as they come. Martha & Stevie had me well primed for when the Supremes, Four Tops & Temptations broke through big-time the following year. But I didn't leave anyone behind. It had no impact on me, for instance, to learn later that Vandellas' sides "Live Wire" & "In My Lonely Room" were poorer chart entries than "Heat Wave" and "Quicksand," which preceded them. All I needed to know is that they were Martha & the Vandellas records. For the rest of my life, I never left one of their 45s sitting in any record store if it was one I didn't have. That ought to give you a clue to my happiness when I learned about THIS lavish reissue of their work.
The 'cherry on top' here is the nicely detailed 20 page booklet included with a fine essay of the group's start to finish history by Fred Bronson of Billboard, great photos of the group, record labels and various Motown promotional posters. So what, if the shrink-wrap is off already and some somebody listened to the discs once or twice? If you loved Martha & her Vandellas, THIS is the indispensable set your collection needs.

One Of My Favorite LIVE releases - An Easy Ride!.......2007-03-01
LIVE WIRE is smooth...just like an old smoothie...
I really like the performance on this show!
It has some of my favorite versions embedded in this set.
Quite a few of them really do more justice to the songs
in a LIVE setting right here on this performance.
A stand out show!
Top Notch Sound!

Hot Damn!.......2004-06-19
I have been praying (and pleading) that this concert would be released. One hot summer night about 17 years ago, WHFS re-aired this concert just as I was pulling up to my rundown Baltimore rowhouse. Before the first chorus was over, I was racing up the stairs to start up my tape recorder. I played that tape into dust and fell in love with this performance and this lyric and funny man. Steve Goodman is great and "Live Wire" is Steve at his greatest.
Cool!.......2000-12-05
Sometimes releases like this are a drag. They come up with the dregs that they somehow missed before. Some of the other Steve Goodman live CDs have been a little uneven. I thought Live Wire was solid, consistent, and a great addition to the Goodman library. I'd never heard some of these before. It was a lot of fun!
Live Wire is more than just another CD.......2000-08-15
What makes Live Wire different than any of the previously released live recordings of Steve's is that this recording is of one Concert on one night. The Easter Tapes was drawn from the 3 different radio broadcasts over a span of three years. Live Wire is from one concert at the Bayou Theater.
What's more, the concert was with a complete back up band, complete with drums, electric guitar, piano, other percussions, and horns.
Among the best cuts on the CD are the opener which is "You're the Girl I Love", a love ballad that Steve wrote for his wife Nancy. Probably the second best song is "The One That Got Away" which is a duet with Amy Madigan. (yes the Amy Madigan who went on to star on both Televsion and the Movies)
Other songs of special note are "Men Who Love Women Who Love Men" and "Crazy Mary". This is the only commercially available release of "Crazy Mary", a Michael Smith song. As for "Men Who Love Women", this is the best version available anywhere and it is performed the way it should be, that is live.
While it is true, City of New Orleans is available elsewhere, this is one of the few versions that has Steve playing lead guitar and the only one where he is backed up by a band and playing lead. Combine that with the band introduction and the expanded instrument solos and you have a rollicking good time.
Of special note is the fact that this CD is one of the few to spotlight some of Steve later classics such as "Luxury's Lap", and "Hand it To You" Listening to the live versions will help you in gaining insight on the albums that they first appeared on.
Of course there are some draw backs to the CD, and these come mainly from production value. The CD is mastered from a recording made almost 20 years ago. Despite this flaw, Steve's voice more than makes up for the "time warp" of technology and once he gets singing live, even if it is just a CD, he still has the ability to capture an audience and hold it for as long as he wants to. Even moreso, despite being almost 20 years old, the sound is crisp, the instrumentation is clear and the vocals ring true.
Hopefully more lost recordings will surface and Red Pajamas will find this new venture profitable enough to continue treating Goodman fans as well as making a few new ones along the way.
Did I forget to mention the "Roches" on Tossin' and Turnin'? A damn good version of old classic.
All we now, is a Live CD with Steve and Jethro Burns.
Great Memories.......2000-08-01
For anyone who had the chance to see Steve Goodman live, the opportunity to hear him again is a dream come true. This set, recorded with a small combo, mixes his charm and wit as he smoothly goes from one great song to another.
Diagnosed with Lukemea in 1969, he lived every day and preformed every concert as though he was celebrating what could be his last day on Earth, and the celebrations were joyous from first strum to last. This disc captures that magic.
Despite the fact that this disk includes his 4th version of "The Dutchman" and his fifth of "City Of New Orleans", I for one never get tired of hearing him do either one. Fortunately we are spared "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" which is on all of his other live sets. Other highlights include "Would You Like To Learn To Dance", "Old Smoothies", the rolicking "Hand It To You", and the wonderful Michael Smith's "Crazy Mary".
While his guitar playing is not as spectacular as it is on "The Easter Tapes", and as an overview of his work it is not as complete as "No Big Surprizes", as a concert disk it equals "Artistic Hair", and that is high praise indeed.

Punk Rock History Lesson.......2007-01-15
Though much concert documentation has been made of early punk groups such as The Ramones or the Sex Pistols, lesser known groups have not had their live material unearthed in official form. Wire is one of the most important punk/post punk groups from the time but has been reticient to release live recordings until recently ("Wire on the Box:1979"). By 1979, Wire were clearly in the post punk camp. It is fascinating to hear them progress to this stage live. The first disc includes two full concerts from 1977 from the Roxy where Wire are clearly still in the traditional punk phase (including the unreleased Ramones take off "Mary is a D---") but with later traits to come (classic songs such as "Strange" come off well). The sound quality is reasonable for a recording of this nature. The 2nd disc (I had heard about the concert from a friend who was in the scene at the time, great to hear it live)is from CBGB's from 1978 and unfortunately, the sound recording takes a nose dive in quality, which is a shame because by this time Wire had fully evolved into the band it would become (highlights include "I am the Fly"). However, in releasing the full concerts, instead of the usual greatest hits live or tampering with the sound, Wire has done the listening public a favor. This is assuredly the way they sounded live but is furthest from nostalgia (Wire still record and perform) but rather a blueprint for future bands who decided to take their sound from the sonic minimalism of punk and into something more sophisticated and essential.
For the aficionados only.......2007-01-11
This is a collection of three Wire performances, two at the Roxy in London and one at the CBGB Theatre in New Work. Ultimately I found this release very disappointing, especially considering its high price and the terrible sound quality of the CBGB performance.
On the first disc are two sets recorded at The Roxy in London, recorded some time before the release of their debut album, Pink Flag. They feature identical setlists and were performed to an almost empty room, so there is little audience interaction. The liner notes reveal that these recordings do have some historical value, however, as they were instrumental in getting the band signed to EMI.
On the second disc there is a short set they performed at the legendary CBGB Theatre in New York, featuring material from their first two albums. This performance was recorded by a radio station, but very badly! The sound quality is just awful, making me seriously regret my purchase.

Getting comfortable with the complexity of Live Wire.......2005-07-04
Chris Beard is a Stratocaster blues player in the power-bandleader vein of Luther & Bernard Allison. With his third release and first self-produced album, Beard gives a nod to Luther with his own "Live Wire" record captured over two dates in Grand Rapids, MI and Chicago IL. At 22, he is already competent in the funk/rock power style that varies from the traditional 12-bar format, using extensive soloing and one-string electric leads that originated with players like Albert & B.B. King. Beard is more confident speaking through is guitar on this record than singing, as his tenor voice seems held back over the horn section. Regardless, his understanding of the melding genres shows promise and adaptability with an unaltered impression of our last generation's material. Previously nominated for a W.C. Handy award, he is a rising roadhouse soul who will bring the blues legacy to the next generation. - Brett Lemke - www.maximuink.com
