Hollywood loved this story so much they remade it every 20 years or so for much of the 20th century; Barbra Streisand imbued it with so much forceful persona in 1976 that they haven't touched it since. The romantic/musical pairing of Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (chosen when no less than Elvis Presley turned the role down) may have been one of the era's strangest but, anchored by Streisand's elegant, Oscar-winning hit theme "Evergreen," it nonetheless yielded the biggest-selling album of the singer's career to date. That neither star is particularly convincing as rock icons--particularly Her Divaness--seems beyond the point of this fable. Instead, both stars take the opportunity to stretch outside their usual personas a bit, Streisand with the R&B teaser "Queen Bee" and confessional "Woman of the Moon," Kristofferson on rousing, theatrical fare like "Watch Closely Now" and "Hellacious Acres." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
"Ageless and evergreen".......2007-06-25
Released in 1976, this album was not only the new Barbra Streisand album, but it was also a Kris Kristofferson release, as well as the soundtrack to the film of the same name. However, like many people who bought this wildly successful release, I bought it for Barbra Streisand. I have no opinion on the Kristofferson tracks since I always skip over them, but Barbra's recordings make this one of her greatest albums
"Queen Bee" is a funky, brilliantly sung song with some great metaphors comparing a woman to certain insects. Very catchy and one of my favorite tracks. It gets a grade of: A
"Everything" is a pretty song that is brought down by some horrible lyrics ("I'd cure the cold and the traffic jam/If there were floods, I'd give a dam"). Otherwise, this music and the singing make it pretty moving. B
"Lost Inside of You," a duet with Kristofferson, is a track that should work, oozing with chemistry, but doesn't. Barbra's solo version, available elsewhere, is far superior to this forgettable track, which needless to say is my least favorite. C-
"Evergreen," the most successful song on here, as well as one of Barbra's signature tunes, is rather simple but very beautiful. With the melody composed by Streisand herself, they complement the poetic lyrics like a glove, and are certain to give the "Streisand chills." A
"The Woman in the Moon," which comes at a crucial point in the movie, is actually a very moving song, mostly because of Barbra's flawless interpretation. B+
"I Believe in Love" is a decent song, but it just doesn't seem like Barbra seems comfortable with it. She oversings at certain points where restraint is necessary, and the fast singing is just distracting at points. B-
"With One More Look at You/Watch Closely Now" also comes at a crucial point in the movie, and is an incredibly stunning and emotional recording. It almost sits up there is prestige as "Evergreen," but is perhaps a tad overlong. A-
As for the reprise of "Evergreen," it still sounds nice, with some other male vocals that are actually effective this time around, but most people won't need to hear it. C+
Despite the fact that "Evergreen" gets all the attention on this CD, most of the other tracks are worthy of mention as well. If you skip through all of the Kristofferson tracks, this album is a rich, satisfying way to pass the time. As for the related movie, well, the less said the better.
A Star is Born.......2007-06-13
I loved this when I bought it in 1976 LP version, and know I have it again! I listen to it every day, it brings back so many memories.
classic.......2007-05-18
This CD and movie seems to generate a lot of controversy...I don't really know why. It WAS a good movie..and I feel it's a great soundtrack...one I never tire of listening to. I remember being a teenager..a young one.. and always loving Babs... but seeing this album cover was mesmerizingly sexy to my young libido! I think Kris and Barbra had great screen chemistry..and there is a lovely simmering sensual quality to all of her acting and singing. And I agree..she does a great comic turn, as well! I almost always cry during the love songs on this CD. Lisa in CT

This item was mixed in, and others as well, with what, were MOSTLY DVDs, movies, I thought, I was buying, the movie. Instead, a got, a music CD. I kept it, because I felt, stupid, for making this mistake, but on 2nd thought, the fault is at LEAST half yours for that policy of mxing DVDs with CDs. No, Im not a happy camper, but understand, I will continue doing business, through Amazon. I, by and large, like buying though you, but you MIGHT consider not, mixing products, in the future...Thank you
Just as I remembered.......2007-01-09
I had always had a copy of the record album but it was great to finally get the CD. I can now listen to it and re live the music as I drive. One of my favourite musicals. Barbara Striesand has the BEST voice, and Kris doesn't do too bad either. Great CD, great DVD!! A must have..

With Three Chords and the Truth, her 1997 debut album, Missouri-born Sara Evans not only wowed listeners with her superb vocal chops, but also boldly and unpretentiously staked claim to a neo-traditionalist style that suggested she'd done a lot of listening to Loretta Lynn and the late Tammy Wynette in her younger days. With Born to Fly, her third album, Evans continues her descent from the neo-traditional high ground and her move uptown. She makes it clear she's also listened quite a bit to the likes of Trisha Yearwood and Bruce Hornsby, whose "Every Little Kiss" she ably covers here. On the exuberant title tune and on fine country-pop ballads like "I Could Not Ask for More" and the lovely "Saints and Angels," Evans proves she can just as sweetly and deftly patrol the uptown territory as she can the down-home highlands, which she revisits on the steel guitar-adorned weeper "I Learned That from You." Though not every song on Born to Fly insinuates its way into listeners' imaginations like the above-mentioned gems do, this solid, ambitious 11-song collection stands as another feather in this gifted young singer's colorful musical cap. --Bob Allen
Customer Reviews:
Just too slow.......2007-07-02
This is Sara's weakest album, at least for me. Nothing wrong with her voice or the content of the songs. It's just that the album contains way too many songs that are too slow and too long [which aggravates the slowness]. This may not be a problem if you are a patient listener who is OK with listening to music just for the sound of the singer's voice. If you're more impatient and like a beat and tempo [like I do] then this album comes off as lugubrious and you will find yourself reaching for the Skip button. Some songs:
Born to Fly - good tune, got big video play
Saints and Angels - slow ballad
Could Not Ask for More - ditto
I Keep Looking - has funny lyrics about a girl with a "grass is always greener" issue.
Learned that from You - slow, the singer learned disappointment from her man
Let's Dance - one of the few livlier tunes on here, good
Four Thirty - has a good beat
Every Little Kiss - Sara does a very good cover of this tune
Looking at What I've Written, the 3 stars might be kind of harsh. The tunes that are "normal" speed are quite good. It's just that the slowness of the rest of the numbers weighs the whole down. 3.5 stars is most accurate.
Sara was "Born to Fly"..........2007-04-26
This is a wonderful album from Sara. While it is much more pop-country than her previous ones, it still retains that Sara sound. It was a huge hit for Sara spawning four hits for her, and thrusting her into the spotlight. It has many great songs on it, there are no fillers that's for sure. On "Born to Fly" She sings about knowing she was destined for great things, and on "Saints and Angels" Sara reflects on a relationship that makes two people whole. On "I keep Lookin'", a song every woman will relate to, Sara sings about wanting more in life, whether it's your hair or your love life!
A must-have for any Sara fans.

Flying High Still.......2007-03-17
Born To Fly deservedly put Sara Evans on the map nationally, a portent of things to come. I appreciate her first two albums, having more traditional songs along with hints of future success. Sara has a knack for bridging traditional country with more contemporary pop/country without sounding cheesy like some newer artists. This CD sounds fresh. In searching for adjectives to describe Born To Fly's sound, I've come up with sweet and beautiful for the ballads, and joyous, without being flashy, for the more uptempo tunes. Her music achieves a delicate balance. This album has been criticized by traditional purists as too pop, but its commerciality does not detract from her excellent voice or these amazing songs. This review will not describe each song, as many other reviewers have so outstandingly done.
If you are reading this thinking about buying this CD, do not pay attention to vulgar remarks about Sara's personal life or even exaltations of how beautiful she is (although true), you need to get this because the music is fantastic. It is stirring and uplifting, palpably infused with Sara's beauty.
If you already own other Sara CDs, you will not regret buying this one. It has brought me much joy since I bought it six or so years ago. I've listened to it more than any other Sara CD; I listen to "I Could Not Ask For More" almost every day. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Disappointing country.......2006-07-25
This is a very disappointing album for a country lover. I can't understand how someone who sings Suds in the Bucket (from Restless) can come out with such a crass pop album good for 14 year olds. The only good song is I learnt that from you. Too bad...
Not Sara's best..........2006-03-28
Well, as I said in my review for No Place That Far, I had Sara's two latest albums and decided to get her first three. No Place That Far was excellent, but this one pales in comparison. Although the songs are decent at the very least, I just don't feel these are Sara's best. As Simon Cowell would say "a very average performance." Don't get me wrong. If you like Sara even just a little bit, I still recommend getting this cd. It's just not as good as some of her others. Now, with that said, I must add that I've only given it one listen through on my way to work this morning and I hadn't had my coffee yet :) So maybe some tracks will grow on me.
So far, here are my ratings for each song on a scale of one to ten:
1. Born To Fly - It seems that any song about flying is a good one. Must be a secret amongst songwriters :). Great, solid beginning. 9/10
2. Saints & Angels - Not a very memorable song. Just ok. 6/10
3. I Could Not Ask For More - It's hard to go wrong with a Diane Warren song. I knew the Edwin McCain version first. This was a good choice for Sara, it fits her well. But I think I still like the Edwin version better. 8/10
4. I Keep Looking - I forgot that I knew this song! I didn't recognize it by the title. Definitely the best song on the album. 10/10
5. I Learned That From You - Great lyrics in this one. Nice ballad. 8/10
6. Let's Dance - Mediocre song. Didn't do much for me. 5/10
7. Why Should I Care - A good "Don't know what you got til it's gone" song. 7/10
8. Four-Thirty - Just an ok song. Not bad, not great. 6/10
9. Show Me The Way To Your Heart - The weakest song on the album. Again, just ok. 5/10
10. You Don't - Another so-so song. 5.5/10
11. Every Little Kiss - A Bruce Hornsby track *yawn*. He bored me in the 80s. 5/10
So overall, this album had only a few real stand-out tracks. If you're knew to Sara's music I recommend you by either No Place That Far or Restless first.

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Excellent!.......2006-04-04
I'm not a particularly big country fan, but not only does this CD have great sentimental value for me, but it truly has great songs! There's not one I don't like. Still, I've tried to put them in the order that I like them best. Of course, that's difficult and some may be interchangeable depending on my mood.
Shadow Face--I love this song.
Heaven Can't Be Found--Same here.
Practice What I Preach--Good advice song.
Thanks A Lot--Cute. And sad. ^^
What It Boils Down To--'Tis great.
Buck Naked--LOL. This song is really great. And makes a very good point.
Keep Your Hands To Yourself--Good.
Born To Boogie--Indeed!
Young Country--I like them all, don't I?...
Honky Tonk Women--Yup, yup...
So basically, it's an all-around winner! Good for listening to continuously.
Great mix of songs.......2004-03-19
As ever, Hank has written several brilliant original songs and added a few well-chosen covers - some country, some blues, a lot of rock - in short, a typical Hank album full of great songs.
My favorite song here is Young country, a mid-tempo country song that features several singers who were then (1987) considered to be the future of country music. Highway 101, Keith Whitley and T Graham Brown all achieved significant success over a short period but did not sustain it. Steve Earle is still doing well but not as a country singer. Marty Stuart was also reasonably successful for a few years. Butch Baker and Dana McVicker never made it. So Hank was wrong if he thought that these guests represented the future of country music, but nobody could have predicted the number of new stars that would emerge in 1989 and 1990.
As a contrast to Young country, in which Hank extols the virtues of mixing country with rock and blues, he covers Thanks a lot, a song originally recorded by Ernest Tubb, a traditional country singer of a bygone age. Country fans should also enjoy Heaven can't be found, a ballad of the type that we expect George Jones to sing, as well as the reflective songs, What it boils down to and Shadow face.
There are a number of hard rocking songs here including the title track, Honky tonk women (a cover of the Rolling Stones classic), Keep your hands to yourself (a cover of the biggest hit by the Georgia Satellites) and Buck naked. The closing track, Practice what I preach, is one of Hank's trademark songs in which he tells it like it is.
If you are interested in collecting Hank's albums, this should be high on your list.
Pure Hank gold.......2002-04-18
This is more of the Rockin' Randall hank, with some good covers of Rolling Stones songs (Honky Tonk Woman) and other great songs.
there is a couple of country songs like the Tubb cover (Thanks A lot) but for the most part this is pure rock.
And as always hank is at the top of his game with this one, if you like hank then get this CD NOW! the price alone screams buy me.
if your new to Hank jr this is a good starting point, since there is no duds on this album.
Bocephus is the king !.......1999-10-15
Hannk is a true master of his craft. He rocks hard and is a model for all rock and rollers. Hank Williams, Jr is marketed wrong, he is a Rock icon and the music in this album exmplifies that

Amazon.com

Lisa in CT
your policy.......2007-01-15

PERFECT COMPANION TO "KING OF BLUEGRASS" DVD.......2004-02-29
This is a fantastic CD. I have always loved Jimmy Martin's music and recently bought the "Knig of Bluegrass" DVD. I was a little disappointed in that DVD since it did not include a lot of his music. But This CD makes up for the shortage of music on the DVD. These are live performances beautifully done. Some of the guests appearing on this CD include Little Jimmy Dickens, Marty Stuart, Ricky Skaggs, J.D. Crowe, Paul Williams and Josh Graves.
I wish there would be a DVD produced of these performances. If you like bluegrass, you will really love this CD.

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2003-12-28
I went to a recent concert of MZ and the Hardways. It was okay. Not great, but okay. So I purchased the album. Three words for you: overproduced, pretentious and schlocky. Another pseudo-rocker who is counting on his good looks to go somewhere. Chris Isaac of the 21st Century. An average band, an average song writer. If you have $15 extra bucks, spend it somewhere else. After listening to this album a couple times, it's likely to end up on the shelf, collecting dust and remaining unlistened to. The fate that it rightfully deserves.
This Stuff is Just Amazing.......2001-06-10
I've been a fan of Martin Zellar's ever since I came across some music from his old band, The Gear Daddies. After listening to his solo debut, I'm an even bigger fan. The songs on Born Under make up some of the best songwriting I've ever heard. "Something's Gotta Happen" tells the story of man who wants desperately to provide for his family, but he caves in under the pressure. "Problem Solved" is about a woman trapped in a relationship with a controlling man. "Summer Kind of Sad" is told by an alcoholic who can't believe his partner stuck with him through all he put her through. These are all common themes, but the words and emotion in which Zellar expresses them are mesmerizing.
I also have to make special mention of the standout track on this album, "Force a Smile." This song is the most beautiful tune I've ever heard. Just an accoustic guitar, a cello, a subtle snare drum, and Zellar's one-of-a-kind voice. Awesome music.
Born Under combines excellent musicianship, heartfelt and emotional stories, and great songs, all on one album. By the way, if you've read this far into my review, it means you haven't run to your local music store or started ordering it from a great place like Amazon.com. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!
Another Huge Talent No One's Heard Of.......2001-05-24
Like Steve Wynn (ex-Dream Syndicate), ex-Gear Daddy Martin Zellar has more talent in his little finger than Fred Durst and the members of your average rap-rock outfit have in their entire bodies. Sadly (and why does this seem like deja vu?), hardly anyone has ever heard of him. And that's a shame because Zellar's tunes, at times delivered with a melodic, almost country-rock-like flair and verve deserve to be heard. Currently residing in the bargain bins of your favorite music emporium. Highly recommended and worth seeking out.
One of the best unknown singers/songwriters around.......2000-12-12
Martin Zellar is an outstanding singer/songwriter. His heart wrenching country-rock songs are as human and intimate as anything I've ever heard. I was a fan of his first band, the Gear Daddies, and I've been a fan ever since. 'Born Under' was his first solo outing, and possibly his finest batch of songs yet.
It's almost a crime that a songwriter like Zellar is as unknown as he is. He deserves to be heard by a wider audience. This is great music.
The song 'East Side Boys' was a regular at Gear Daddies live shows, and it finally gets the studio treatment it deserves on this disc. Other stand out songs here are 'Lie To Me', "Somethings Gotta Happen" and "Problem Solved".
Also be sure to check out Martin Zellar and the Hardways CD's "The Many Moods of Martin Zellar" and the Martin Zellar Live album. All great stuff.
Zellar.......1999-12-16
After releasing some great music with his group, the Gear Daddies, Zellar's first solo release in 1994 was one of the best albums of the year. Simple stories with not so simple heartaches. You'll swear you know at least one person that belongs in every one of Zellar's poetic songs.
