Angel Town

It takes about 32 seconds for Katy Moffatt's deeply passionate voice to grab hold of you: About then, she sings the word "here" on the album's title (and opening) track, infusing wild emotion into a rather emotionless word. Without question, her immaculate alto is the focal point of Angel Town. Eight of the 11 songs are covers---a rarity for Moffatt---and the accompaniment has been stripped bare, leaving only Andrew Hardin's tactful guitar and Hank Bones's bass. Moffatt grabs material from a variety of sources---old pros such as Cindy Walker and Cole Porter, and younger country-folk writers such as David Olney, Steve Goodman, Pat McLaughlin, Chris Smither, and Patrick Sky. Her reading of "Miss Otis Regrets," a jazz and blues standard, brilliantly highlights the irony of Porter's lyrics with a delicate lullaby feel. She shows empathy on Don Williams's "Ghost Story" and conveys remarkable honesty and sensitivity on Walker's "You Don't Know Me." Her three originals (co-written with Tom Russell) fit the album's subdued mood perfectly. Moffatt's ability to combine tenderness with intensity, and fragility with self-assuredness shines brightly throughout this peaceful, lovely record. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and peacefully sublime..........2000-06-11

Katy Moffatt is blessed with one of those rare voices in music. Equally at home with Country, Rock, Blues, and Jazz, hers is a voice that shines as big and clear as mountain air and is at the same time as elegantly sublime as a glass of fine wine. Those familiar with Moffatt's music know that she is one of those singer songwriters who helped invent Country Rock back in the 70's and that almost all of the music we listen to on the radio today has in one way or another been influenced by artists like her. On this CD, mostly an album of covers, Moffatt sings with an understated simplicity that makes songs like old standards "You Don't Know Me" and "Miss Otis Regrets" seem totally brand new. Three of the songs are written by Moffatt and her long time partner, Tom Russell and contain a depth and sophistication that is not often found in music today . The production is simple and spare - proving that it doesn't take a lot to make good music burn brightly.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Christmas Album !.......2004-12-14

Jacqueline Schwab's plaintive piano is recognized almost immediately as the background music for Ken Burns' reknowned public broadcasting films covering Baseball and the Civil War...in this disc, she turns her considerable talents to the soothing, ethereal hymns, carols, and spirituals of the Christmas season. Upon my first hearing, I was reminded of my sitting in the parlour of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church's parsonage as the wife of the Pastor effortlessly, without benefit of sheet music, tinkered with the old-but-finely-tuned upright piano, playing Christmas hymns that made me weep. This disc is a gift. I defy you to listen to it and not be moved to your heart.

5 out of 5 stars my CD of the year.......2002-11-25

Jacqueline Schwab's Down Came an Angel wins my best album of the year award (which goes to the best CD I first heard this year). This is Christmas music as it should be. Even without words, these recordings of these songs speak more to my heart and to the meaning of the season than I have heard music do in a long, long time.

Mrs. Schwab's playing has an unbelievable emotional (and I would argue spiritual) range. She is introspective one moment, exuberant the next, and then quietly adoring in the next. Rarely have I been so consistently impressed by an artist.

There are many highlights on this album, but the one that cries out to be heard is Mrs. Schwab's Away in a Manger--if I had a song of the year award, it would go to this song. This is music of hope for a hopeful season. Dorian's sound is, as usual (I'm going to start writing "of course" instead of "as usual"), outstanding.

Get a copy of Down Came an Angel--this is music at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Capturing the Mood of Christmas.......1999-12-25

I first heard An Angel Came Down on KFUO-FM here in St Louis. I was transfixed. The solo piano captured the mood of each Christmas song, with strong hints of melody weaving in with light hints of melody - always serene.

5 out of 5 stars Let theyself be hereby dubbed.........Best Broadway Tune Vocalist..........2007-06-21

Of my dozens and dozens of Broadway music performances, I find only one singer can be dubbed "Best." That person, Thomas Hampson, is thee. While show performers and ballad singers have all had their way with these tunes, only one is across-the-board great in them.

And whether or not these are the "best" representative songs of Porter is a moot point, something entirely up to personal taste. The point is that these songs have not been better performed by an individual male singer. It certainly doesn't hurt, either, that the great John McGlinn was on board as conductor/director (and likely strongly involved in arranging).

    ****

5 out of 5 stars This isn't a vanity crossover project but Cole Porter with art and style.......2006-07-17

The glut of crossover albums that came our way in the ripe era of Pavarotti and Domingo has abated, leaving not the best taste in the mouth. But there were some high points, and this 1991 Cole Porter collection from Thomas Hampson is a gorgeous example. Like his hero from the 30s, Lawrence Tibbett, who triumphed as much on radio as in the opera house, Hampson sings full out, applying an overtly operatic baritone to popular song. He has such a command of vocal technique that, as with Tibbett and more recently Ben Heppner, the glory of the vocalism would carry the day on its own.

But Hampson adds to this a good deal of finesse, humor, and suavity--particularly the last. "Begin the Beguine" and "In the Still of the Night" convey the cosmopolitan asurance that is a Cole Porter trademark. There are also some bigger songs, such as "It Was Written in the Stars," where Hampson can unleash his voice at full force, a thrilling experience. I don't think there's been an opera star who's made a Cole Porter recording other than Kiri Te Kanawa, in forty years. This is a very enjoyable one indeed.

1 out of 5 stars pure self indulgent garbage.......2006-04-22

SOMEONE PLEASE STOP THOMAS HAMPSON, BEFORE HE HURTS HIMSELF...OR HURTS THE REST OF US....What a collective piece of trash this album is?..is there a more self-important, bloated, indulgent, precious, affected, pompous singer on the planet?...i am waiting for Thomas Hampson sings Disco...or Thomas Hampson sings Elton John...or Thomas Hampson does Eminem?...he probably thinks he could pull 'em off...what unmitigated gaul...don't waste your money here

4 out of 5 stars Thank god, no astaire or kelly singing on this one.......2001-04-30

This was a great listen and it was finally nice to hear trained singers doing Porter. Can't stand it when I hear a lilting Porter song in an MGM film and then Astaire or Gene Kelly decide to try and sing it, usually off key, and end up slaughtering the number. Great to hear some of the old stuff and different takes on other standards.

5 out of 5 stars Cole must have been watching over this project.......2000-09-06

John McGlinn's orchestrations on this compilation of Cole Porter tunes have as much to do with the brilliance of this CD as Mr Hampson's vocal renderings. Both have that lush sound that make a Porter tune sound like what this reviewer believes Porter would have appreciated, judging by his own versions of his songs, and the arrangements that he was involved in. McGlinn remained faithful to those original arrangements and added a few of his own ideas and along with modern day recording improvements produced a sound that I think Porter would very much approve of. My only complaint is the selection of songs, but that as always comes down to personal taste. However in doing so I was tuned into a few songs that I had never heard before, some of which are now among my favorite Porter songs. Specifically, 'Who said Gay Paree' is a sublime version of a lesser known Porter tune. It is one of his tunes about Paris but unlike the others its a sad tune of love lost with McGlinn and Hampson both at their finest. Another one new to me was'My Cozy Little Corner In the Ritz' an early Porter tune with him at his sarcastic best and a brilliant rendition. The standards are all briliantly done. 'In the Still of the Night' is my favorite, followed by I Concentrate on You', 'Easy To Love', 'Night and Day' (edging out Sinara's version, but not quite as magical as Fred Astaire's from the movie 'Gay Divorcee', but close) 'I've Got You Under My Skin' is divine, Begin the Beguine and 'Don't Fence me in'. All the others are great versions but none would make my top 50 Porter tunes. With the convenience of tracking with CD's though I program my favorites in and hear an hour of heavenly music from one of my favorite tunesmiths as interpreted by two contemporary masters of our time.

5 out of 5 stars Carols From Clare.......2006-12-12

Here again is a Christmas collection from Clare College that will easily find its way to the top of your list. The mixed male and female choir is accompanied by an orchestra whose excellence is manifest in it perfect coordination with the voices throughout. All the arrangements capture your soul and bring you into a dimension of Christmas not found elsewhere. If giving this as a gift, make sure to buy one also for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars This music makes me wish Christmas season would never end!!!.......2001-12-22

This CD is absolutely beautiful. I can't bear to put it away after the holiday season is over! The voices of the Clare College Singers, accompanied by the orchestra blend together to make a heavenly sound. The songs are so gentle and almost mystical. I discovered John Rutter and the Clare College Singers by listening to the local classical music station, and fell in love with their unique sound. "Shepherds Pipe Carol" is one of my favorites, but all of the songs are wonderful on this CD. I also purchased "The Holly and the Ivy" (also with the Clare choir and John Rutter), and it is beautiful too. 5 stars is not enough. If you enjoy gentle, spiritually uplifting Christmas music, buy this CD. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious carol arrangements by Rutter--a holiday MUST HAVE.......2001-11-29

Delicious Rutter carol arrangements with beautiful pure singing by Clare College Singers of Cambridge, England.

I was delighted to find "Carols from Clare" which includes 11 of the 12 recordings of my Capitol International Series LP recording , "Christmas in Cambridge, " featuring the Clare College Singers and Orchestra, Rutter as arranger.NEVER THOUGHT I'D FIND !!! It has been my FAVORITE Christmas holiday recording for 19 years. Only piece missing is "Of the Father's Love Begotten" which I will be searching for, of course, on another Rutter CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Glorious, Inspiring!!.......2001-11-28

I fell in love with John Rutter's music when I heard his "Magnificat" performed locally. I by chance heard the first selection on this cd- one of two he wrote himself- and bought it just based on that one tune. I am of the mind that you can't own enough Christmas music because you'll want variety. This cd, and others from the Clare or Cambridge collection, is not about "Mama kissing Santa" or a red-nosed reindeer. It's about the magic of Christmas and the reason we have celebrate a birth in a manger. Of course like any great sacred music, even athiests will love the beauty of it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Cheer.......2001-01-27

Great old standards and some new stuff thrown in from jolly ole England. Wonderful selection and performance. Great addition to holiday collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Superlative!.......1998-11-29

In this compilation, we hear Virgil Fox at his virtuosic best. From the stillness of "Silent Night" to the majesty of "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing," the great Aeolian-Skinner of New York's Riverside Church is displayed in all its glory. Pay special attention to the last variation of Daquin's "Echo Noel" for the sparkling pedalwork added by Marcel Dupré and played as only Fox could! Some lovely pieces not composed for Christmas, but certainly appropriate, shine in this collection, notably Franck's "Panis Angelicus," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," Schubert's "Ave Maria," Guilmant's "Marche Religeuse," and, of course, "The Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah". Fox's registrations are, at times, symphonic but the full organ in "Adeste Fideles" and "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" will make you glad you bought that subwoofer!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Season.......2005-11-19

I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.

4 out of 5 stars FOR WHISTLING OR SINGING ALONG.......2003-12-28

The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.

5 out of 5 stars What? I'm the first to review this?.......2006-02-21

How can brass Christmas music get any better that this? The musicianship is second-to-none and the arrangements are lively, intricate, and interesting to listen to over and over again. Yet, they still retain that traditional sound without sounding experimental or cute. I don't even like brass music so much but I love this recording.

Just put this through your headphones and be instantly transported to a another place and time. Perhaps the business district of a small town in England or the Eastern US in the 19th century. Snow covers ground and is still falling, but there's no wind at all. Folks are bundled up milling about doing their last-minute Christmas preparations, and they've all got smiling faces and are greeting each other. A brass band is playing on the street corner. You see a big Christmas turkey in a store window and you ask the shopkeeper how much is costs. "A pittance!" you think! You buy that turkey and throw a feast for all the children in the orphanage!

Anyway, it's a great CD and I still can't believe I'm writing the first review.
