If you just couldn't get enough of The Anthology of American Folk Music, here's the perfect companion CD. The Anthology is, of course, the celebrated 1997 reissued six-disc box that became the touchstone for modern folk music when it was originally put out by filmmaker and record collector Harry Smith in 1952. The Harry Smith Connection is culled from two October 1997 concerts at which performers tackled tracks from The Anthology, which consists of 84 recordings made between 1926 and 1933. Contributors include Roger McGuinn (backed by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett and sounding great), Dave Van Ronk, Ethel Caffie-Austin, and the New Lost City Ramblers. The affection the performers feel for these earthen songs is palpable. The songs themselves are unassailable. --Steven StolderAlbum Description
Powerful new interpretations of Southern musical traditions, recorded live in October, 1997, at the Barns of Wolf Trap. These contemporary versions of songs that either appeared on the Grammy-Award winning Anthology of American Folk Music or are associated with its compiler, Harry Smith (tracks 9 and 19), are a wild mix of styles from "gangsta folk" to gospel, blues, Cajun, country rock, jug band, and more. A stellar group of musicians pays tribute to the past and dramatically demonstrates the enduring vitality of America's traditional music. Extensive notes, discographies, and photographs. Produced by Pete Reiniger, Jeff Place and Bob Santelli, annotated by Jeff Place and Bob Santelli.Customer Reviews:

Acadia, blessed spirit of the waters..........2007-05-19
The same qualities, as well as a wonderful affinity for the fresh charm of these French Canadian songs (Ms LeBlanc is French-Canadian herself), make this recording an enthralling one. I can never listen to Suzie LeBlanc without thanking God for her exquisite contributions to the world of music, and this recording was no exception.
She has just released another very similar recording, called "Tout passe: Chants d'Acadie", in which the focus, while remaining upon Acadian songs, is shifted to reflect the great upheaval of Acadians forced out of their homelands, to wander upon what one could call a type of pilgrimage. That sense of pilgrimage is strongly highlighted in the recording - and once again, Ms LeBlanc's singing and choice of (often extraordinarily haunting) songs combine to produce a CD of great beauty and unforgettable interpretation.
I very highly recommend both this recording "Mer jolie" and its new "companion" CD of "Tout Passe". I have just played both recordings twice over while doing some research, and they are so charming and moving that it will be with reluctance that I move on to the next CD waiting to be heard.

The music on this historical collection comes from Avoyelles Parish, on what is described as the northern fringe of "Cajun country" in Louisiana. The three musicians represented here are little known, even in their own region, and made recordings that were not distributed widely outside of their native territory. These 24 songs represent the full range of Cajun music at the time and include folk ballads, some dance tunes, and plenty of back-porch-style folk songs. The set is interesting as a historical document of a small region, but the recording quality is pretty poor (which is probably a result of the originals as much as the records that these CDs were mastered from); the musicians are good, not great; and few of the performances are remarkable for either content or musicianship. Exceptions include a few of accordionist John Bertrand's pieces, which have a rough, idiosyncratic style that will certainly appeal to Cajun squeezebox enthusiasts. This one is strictly for ardent collectors of old Cajun music. --Louis GibsonCustomer Reviews:

The remarkable two-disc River of Song is the first of a stunning multimedia project (including a four-part PBS documentary, public-radio interviews, and book) on which an array of artists under the tutelage of director-curator Anthony Seeger give voice and share the lore of America's great Mississippi River. The musical journey is parceled into quadrants: from the Northern headwaters, slicing through Twain's heartland; snaking down into the Deep South; wending through Louisiana, where music is king; and culminating at its life-giving, life-taking mouth, the Gulf of Mexico. Prolonged visitation occurs in musical meccas Minneapolis, St. Louis, Memphis, and New Orleans, showcasing the abundant talent and distinct sound of each locale. River of Song celebrates not only the landscapes through which the water traverses but also the colorful cultures that have sprung from and thrive at her banks: Native American, Dutch, African-American, Cajun, and subcultures and hybrids of youth and religion, including indie-rock hipsters, heartland country rockers, Delta blues men, Mexican Dixieland jazz, and both black and white gospel musics from deep believers of faith. Much like driving the Natchez Trace, the journey is profoundly American--deeply affecting in providing not only a sense of the present but of our very roots. --Paige La GroneAlbum Description
This two-hour, 36 track, musical journey down the Mississippi from the headwaters to the delta captures the power and diversity of American music in the late 20th century. The music, recorded between 1995 and 1997 in small towns and large cities along the river, reflects centuries of interaction and experimentation along America's great waterway. 48-page booklet.Customer Reviews:
