Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime is a masterwork of American indie rock, a sprawling, 42-song explosion of terse, revolutionary rock & roll. Rifling through a kind of lurching punk-funk, this San Pedro, California, trio poses philosophical questions, mocks love-song clichés and Michael Jackson, covers CCR and Van Halen, and gets drunk on "Jesus and Tequila"--all of it brought to life by the jazzy, popping bass of Mike Watt; the rifle-shot fills of drummer George Hurley, and the staccato guitar and impassioned cries of the late D. Boon, whose voice will forever insist: "No hope? See, that's what gives me guts." --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating and fun.......2007-03-09

I was inspired to look back to this amazing release by the book Our Band Could Be Your Life, and I wasn't disappointed. I only had a vague recollection of the Minutemen from the 80s so I wasn't quite sure what was in store, but even a typically tinny SST production job can't mask the raw creativity, energy and excitement over the course of an almost ridiculous 43(!) tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes I forget.......2006-11-15

the confusion that this thing caused. I quibbled about this snippet or that fragment's length or theme or placement and then always eventually realized that good albums have been made of just one of these ideas. Wow. I just listened for the first time in a few years and my confusion has been renewed. How did they do it?

4 out of 5 stars Essential album. Lame reissue!.......2006-08-02

I rank Double Nickels on the Dime in the top ten albums released in the 80's. I am very glad I held onto my vinyl because for reasons I can't fathom, three songs on the original release are not on this reissue, which is why I am not giving it the five stars this album deserves.

Minutemen really were not like any other band, so it's hard to compare them to anyone. This album is generally, and rightfully, considered the band's masterpiece - this is their best synthesis of funk, punk, noise, folk, rock, and whatever else crossed their fertile minds during the feverish recording of this 46-song double (vinyl anyway) album.

Volumes have been written about this one already and mostly it's all correct - as long as the writers agree that this is truly one of the greatest albums ever. It's like ten careers' worth of ideas are crammed into just short of 80 minutes of the most fascinating rock music ever created.

So what is the deal with the missing tracks? I won't lie to you - if you see this album in some vinyl bin, grab it because all three of these songs are as good as several relatively weaker songs that are on the reissue:

"Mr. Robot's Holy Orders (Hurley/Watt)" - this was track 3, side 3 ("side george" - the inner clear part of the vinyl has "DANCE MUSIC IS THE NEW PASTURE" etched into it). This is a great funky song that deserves to be here far more than, say, the god-awful cover version of Doctor Wu (the one song on this album I don't like). But the exclusion of this track is nowhere near as egregious as the absence of ...

"Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" - (Van Halen) - The Amazon review above alludes to the fact that in its original form, this album featured a hysterical cover of the Van Halen classic - and this is the version to have. The one on "Tour Speil" pales by comparison. They bashed out a 38-second version of it which was originally on side 4 (untitled - "CHUMP ROCK IS THE NEW COOL"), and it kills me that they left it off this reissue!!! The song is 38 seconds long! There is plenty of room on the CD for it, and "Mr Robot's Holy Orders" too for that matter. (total running time of this album: 74:50 - ATBL would have been no problem at all) It can't be a copyright issue - their other version of the same song is available on Project Mersh Vol. 3. What gives???

"Little Man With A Gun In His Hand" - a better sounding version, because the bass is much fuller sounding than the still great version on Buzz or Howl. Plus, this version has a real ending.

The senseless excission of great songs is the only gripe I have with what is still an album for the ages.

By the way, side 1 was "side d." - "ARENA ROCK IS THE NEW WAVE" and side 2 was "side watt" - "PUNK ROCK IS THE NEW NOSTALGIA".

Buy this album. Make a gift of it to anyone who calls him/herself open-minded. But keep your eyes open for the vinyl version.

5 out of 5 stars Worth so much more than nickels and dimes.......2006-07-19

If the show Jackass ever did anything worth admiring, it was choosing "Corona" by Minutemen as its theme. At two and a half minutes, it's one of the longer tracks on this nearly 45 track album. It's also one of the more conventional punk anthem's they've done, considering how far the horizons stretch when it comes to this band and being creative.

Not to sound pretentious, but Minutemen are someone I admire because they seem like me. That is, they seem to get awfully bored, really quickly. That may just be an allusion created by this bands short and brilliant bursts. Tracks like "Cohesion" are an example--here, in between these polka-influenced punk songs, we get an arpeggiated Spanish guitar demonstration. And, somehow, it works beautifully.

"Nature Without Man" seems to outdue everything Pearl Jam every did, in just over 90 seconds. "Love Dance", along with "Jesus and Tequila" treat us to some blues; and "Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want the Truth" is just as inspirational as any hymnal.

It's sad that in this "Jackass" generation Mr. Boon and his companions have been forgotten. Minutemen are comprised of ideas, and not just power chords (though, they do those damn well too!). I've tried to introduce this album to the "punks" that I know, but they're so easily turned off when they don't hear pop punk that's been taught to them as though 20 songs about the bands girlfriends have substance; it seems the punk mentality has died.

Very few albums span across so many genre's with this type of skill and tenacity (if you know of some I may not, please tell me). Everything here seems so incoherrent that it begs for repeated listens; begs for that "shuffle" button, too. It should also beg for your attention. Beg to turn your head to a past time, where emotional and political music didn't have to be covered by a label or a haircut or a t-shirt.

5 out of 5 stars Blows away all of today's limp, soggy music!!!!!!.......2006-07-18

DOUBLE NICKELS ON THE DIME ('84) stuffs 43 short songs on two LP's or one CD. The album meshes quite a variety of musical styles: punk, funk, spoken bits, jazzy instrumentation, folk, and even polka!

The MINUTEMEN accomplish this masterpiece album because of its three outstanding musicians - D. BOON (vox, guitar), MIKE WATT (bass, vox), and GEORGE HURLEY (drums, percussion), as well as other guest musicians.

Key tracks include: VIETNAM, POLITICAL SONG FOR MICHAEL JACKSON TO SING, CORONA (*note: The theme music for "JACKASS"), HISTORY LESSON PT. 2, JESUS & TEQUILA, DO YOU WANT NEW WAVE OR DO YOU WANT THE TRUTH?, MAYBE PARTYING WILL HELP.

If you stack this album up against any/all of today's weak & soggy music (i.e. video/pop hits), then you'll discover an album that stands head-and-shoulders above this unfortunate lull in current musical trends...This album more than makes up for today's lack of creativity in most forms of music. Buy it - try it!!!!!

Album Description

Mitch Kashmar is one of the most soulful and powerful blues singers in the business today, black or white; his blues harp playing is second to none for creativity, drive and excitement. He's shared the stage with some of the biggest names in blues over the years, including Big Joe Turner, Eddie 'Cleanhead' Vinson, Lowell Fulson, Jimmy Witherspoon, John Lee Hooker, Pee Wee Crayton, and Johnny Adams. They've all known what the rest of the blues world is about to find out: Mitch Kashmar is a force to be reckoned with in the blues.

"Nickels & Dimes" is certain to be Kashmar's breakthrough into the mainstream of roots and blues. Under the direction of Delta Groove Productions head Randy Chortkoff, Mitch is teamed with West Coast blues guitar pioneer Junior Watson, plus the all-star rhythm section of Richard Innes and Ronnie James Weber, and pianist Bob Welsh. The end result of this outstanding combination of talent is one of the deepest-rooted, hardest-swinging, funkiest blues outfits you're likely to come across - and one that is perfectly tailored to Mitch Kashmar's finely honed blend of old school blues tradition and modern power and sophistication. Season the whole mix with a few decades of experience as a bandleader, and the end result is one of the most exciting blues releases of the year. So sit back, turn it up, and make the 'discovery' for yourself - Mitch is the real deal.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Blues with a feeling.......2006-07-25

This CD sounds like you just dropped in for a beer in some Roadhouse in Chicago. I have played this CD for half a dozen people over the last 6 months and they all say the same thing it's great. "This Cd feels like the smoke coming off a slab of ribs. "

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Blues!.......2006-06-26

Suprise album! I liked the sample and took a chance buying this CD and I was not disappointed. I like the "Nickels & Dimes" track the best, it struck a funny note wtih me!

5 out of 5 stars Blown away.......2005-09-10

An amazingly good debut album by a guy who understands the blues. Tight backup band with Jr. Watson on guitar, and Mitch is just an outstanding harps man. "Just Show It To Me" is alone worth the price of the cd.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2005-05-12

Wow! I was bowled over by this Cd. Where has this guy been hiding? This disc is one of the best discs I've heard in a while. Great harp, singing, songs, and a great band to boot, featuring Junior Watson on guitar. If you like REAL blues, and miss William Clarke, you owe it to yourself to check this guy out. Not a clunker on this Cd. Can't wait for his next one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this cd! I have seen them perform many times at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. I have even heard them perform live on the Marc Steiner Steiner radio Show. This is the first time that I have bought one of there cd's, despite being a long time fan of their music. This cd is filled with enjoyable new age music for the soul. The circle is now complete :)

5 out of 5 stars Bring on the sassy pop punk!.......2002-03-05

When you want to listen to an indie band that has 80s sensibilities with enough punk pop sass to keep you in check, then you have the Rondelles. Much like The Donnas, this band hit stardom before they were even out of high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico! Band members Yukiko Moynihan (bass, vocals), Juliet Swango (guitar, vocals) and Oakley Munsen(drums, keyboards, vocals) found themselves on some really impressive tours with heavy hitters like Sleater-Kinney and Sonic Youth.

Now dwelling in Washington, D.C., the Rondelles' latest release Shined Nickels and Loose Change, shows the band at its best. With songs like "T.V. Zombie" and "Cafeteria Rock" you feel compelled to listen closely for amusing and witty lyrics. This CD is chock full of tracks from previously released compilations and singles, including six brand new songs.

I love that this band does killer covers of Modern English's "I'll Melt With You" and Madonna's "Like a Prayer."

I can't tell you how much I love this CD. If you don't pick up Shined Nickels and Loose Change you're losing out!

4 out of 5 stars I've got a crush on a girl I know. Her name is Juliet Swango.......2001-12-06

If you're looking for something complicated, something that might change the world, don't look here. But if you're looking for something melodic to get stuck in your head for days & days, you're at the right place.

This is a loose compilation of some 7"s and some newly recorded songs, and for the most part, they're excellent. It definitely sounds a little more lo-fi than their last album, The Fox.

Juliet's voice is awesome and is a lot of times the highlight of the song and what really sets this band apart from dozens of other bands that sound similar.

Highlights include "Safety in Numbers" (with the excellent cheerleader style "Got! A feeling! I won't be! Needing!" bit... which segways into a classic Swango chorus that goes "Your love anymore"... get it?) & the bass and handclap effect of "TV Zombie".

It's a shame that the record has to end with "Fort Surrounded". A horrible track, to be honest.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Your Average Garage Rock.......2001-08-22

While the Rondelles sound like a fresh garage sale treasure, they've actually been perfecting their edgy, garage-y style since high school. With two full-lengths and a number of 7 inches under their belt, their sound is still incredibly raw and energetic.

Shined Nickels and Loose Change showcases some of their early 45s along with some compilation tracks and six brand spankin' new songs. Fans of all things camp will appreciate their cover of Madonna's "Like a Prayer," the Shimmy Beckers' "Cafeteria Rock" (Food Fight!) and the traditional Christmas song "Angels We've Heard on High" done in a not-so-traditional fashion. Simply put, this is a fun album.

Singer Juliet Swango's sweet voice softens the pop-punk edges but also provokes the crowd to clap their hands when she and her band mates switch into cheerleader-esque outbreaks. Shinned Nickels and Loose Change recalls the retro pop of the Go-Go's and early B-52's, but also the current female punk of Sleater-Kinney and the Donnas. However, they retain something fresh and creative that helps them stand apart. Clearly they had something worth listening to since they've had the honor of opening up for indie punk giants Sleater-Kinney and Sonic Youth. In fact, the Rondelles first full-length, Fiction Romance Fast Machines, was released on Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelly's own label Smells Like Records.

This new release is hooky, irresistible, and creative. This is no throw-away, three-chord punk album. Very deliberately raw, but beneath the surface is carefully placed riffs, sound bites, handclaps, electronic sounds, backup vocals and much more that make Shined Nickels and Loose Change surprisingly clever.

5 out of 5 stars Contender For Blues Cd Of The Year.......2004-04-28

I have to say this cd was a surprise. Charles Wilson's last disc (the very fine independently-released YOU GOTTA PAY TO PLAY) was catchy mostly-programmed party soul blues that is popular on the "chitlin circuit". This Delmark debut is 100% organic- meaning it's actual humans playing on it- and it rips! Everything about this CD works- the band is tight and Carl Weathersby is a tour-de-force on guitar as he plays on 13 of the tracks! Charles' aching vocals are the best showcase yet for his talents- the way he soulfully owns the title track, Robert Ward's "My Love Is Real", Lee Shot Williams' "I Like Your Style", Little Milton's "Hattie Mae" and Travis Haddix' "Doctor Doctor". 15 tracks- not a dud in the bunch. He even does justice to the overdone "Cut You-A-Loose". This is a masterpiece!

3 out of 5 stars I wish I had a nickel..........2003-04-20

It's my opinion that Headstones is Grant Lee Buffalo's successor. I have thought about it for a while, and the closest sounding to Headstones I found is Grant Lee Buffalo. That's not a bad thing... well maybe it's bad if you didn't like Grant Lee Buffalo. I think it's nice. And I think it's sad, too. It's nice because Headstones can rock big time when they want to. It's sad at the same time because they didn't manage to rock all over Nickels for Your Nightmares.

The first 2 song, Downtown and Pinned You Down, are probably the hardest ones (with the exception maybe of F*** You). Settle, the first single, is a slower rock song reminiscent of Grant Lee Buffalo's Jubilee. Then there's Above Ground Swimming Pools, my favorite song on the album. It has a nice melody and shows what the lead singer is capable of. I mentionned it earlier, my second favorite song here, F*** You ! This is the song you want someone you don't like to listen to : "F*** you ! F*** you ! I will get over you !" It worked for me ;) !

The rest of the songs are average rock songs (I sometimes detect a little southern influence), they aren't groundbreaking but they work. I recommand a listen before buying. Headstones' is a nice band but they're not for everyone.

      Product Description

NICKELS AND DIMES is a Norwegian hard-rock trio, formed in 1987 around Steffen NICOLAISEN (Guitar & vocals), Arild STEINSRUD (Bass) and Nils H. MAEHLUM (Drums). The band defines its music as powerful Seventies rock, with a touch of blues. A pinch of southern rock could also be added. The first album "Bad Bad Little Lamb" was recorded in 1993 with the help of keyboards player Lars Christian NARUM (BLIND ORPHANS). After several line-up changes, the original trio reformed in 2003 and started to work on its fourth album. "Midnight Overdrive" (2004) is eventually released on the Brennus Thundering International label. Welcome back to the fjords, on board of the NICKELS AND DIMES truck, new surroundings guaranteed !
